I have just returned from a few weeks in Iran (Tehran, Isfahan,
Shiraz, Yazd a.o.) and I didn't hear IRIB on 1386 kHz at all. So this
frequency seems to be inactive at the moment.
Currently I am working on an Iranian MW-bandscan, which will be
published as soon as possible.
I have also asked IRIB for a complete list of all MW-transmitters, but
I doubt that I will get it.

According to today's report in Robert Feder's columns in the Chicago
Sun-Times, WAUR AM 930 - Sandwich, Illinois is off the air. Here is a

I checked 930 kHz and indeed the station is not on. This might be a
good time for Chicago area DXers to take advantage of this until the
station returns on the air.

For the past few days (since Tuesday I think) Radio Rossii's outlet on
657 kHz in Murmansk, NW Russia has been silent. I haven't been able to
hear the Murmansk 1089 tx either. On Friday both 657 and 1089 were on
air again.

A tender was announced for a private radio network in Bavaria,
consisting of the following txs:

CKST is now harder Top 40 oldies Rock with promos of "Sports Radio"
coming. The splatter is terrible. At 250 miles South the ticks can be
heard nights from about 1010 to 1070 on all radios here. I sure hope
this is not something that will continue. It is especially bad off the
Northern Beverage.

***DX Information from the British DX Club (BDXC-UK).
Radio 4 longwave is to be off the air, british daylight saving time,
Monday 30 april to friday 4 May and Monday 7 May to friday 11 May, from
10:00 until 19:00. It is also to be off the air on Sunday 13 May from
4:30 to 12:00. We are informed this is for maintenance work. No
mention was made concerning availability on the internet but listeners
in scotland should continue to receive an undisturbed service.<<<< via
Mike Barraclough. The times quoted are BST = UTC + 1. I note that it is
actually off air as I type, and my reception of R4 is less strong from
the two Scottish transmitters. Droitwich is usually 9+30. I'm currently
getting a signal 9+8. So, if you want to try to hear Scotland on LW, now
is the time! I believe there are power reductions on the various MW
senders at Droitwich too. That's 693, 1053 and 1215. The Talk Sport
1053 outlet has a co-ch station that is well behind the others. Much
more, it seems, than would normally be expected.

DXers have the opportunity to log Scotland on Longwave for the next
couple of weeks. I was surprised to find BBC Radio 4 Droitwich 198 kHz
off the air today, and checking the engineering information it says this
transmitter will be off between 0900 and 1800 UTC through 16 May (not
clear if this includes weekends). During this time, Radio 4 on 198 is
broadcast only by two 50kW transmitters in Scotland. The work at
Droitwich also affects Radio 5 live on 693kHz, which is on reduced
power.

5/1. Today it is clearly noticeable that the Droitwich Radio 4
transmitter is off the air. Before 0900, I had a signal of S9+30 and
S9+5 afterwards. Besides, it is possible the to null out the other R4
Scotland transmitters. So I could hear Polskie Radio Bis, , quite well.
Strange enough they had a talk and phone-in programme where the phone-
ins were in English.

I heard IRAQ General Service on 1050.0 kHz last night (1 MAY, 0105-
0210... UTC). Unlisted transmitter.
Songs until 0130, then news, followed by more songs at 0140, then ID
at 0200. Quite fair signal at peaks. No parallel frequency found.
According to WRTH they are not on the air at this time.

CKGY 1170 khz, Red Deer, Alberta made the official switch to FM this
morning at 7:30 local time. Until 7:30 they had been relaying the AM on
95.5 MHz during a 3 week test period. Now the reverse is true, with the
AM relaying the FM. That will likely be the case for about 3 months,
until the AM is turned off. Unlike some of the switches to FM we've
seen, this move doesn't involve a format or call change.
At the switchover time they ran a short feature on the station's 28
year history, including a few words from the original owner, and also
the mayor.
Now IDs are generally "KG Country 95-5", though they still give the
CKGY call letters at times.

KLVZ/1220 (Oldies) and KLZ/560 (Legends) have announced that they will
swap frequencies on May 21st. 560 is 5 kw directional day and night and
1220 is 660 watts day and 11.5 watts night non-directional. Both
stations are, and will continue to be, in stereo.
Those of you able to hear the 560 signal will soon be treated to 2 of
Denver radio's legendary jocks, Hot Rod Hixson and Da Boogieman. For

from the British DX Club. It was compiled by BDXC-UK editor Tony Rogers
and lists international broadcasts in English on shortwave and
mediumwave for the Summer 2000 (A-01) schedule period. It is in time
order throughout and covers all target areas. Transmitter sites are
included where known. A comprehensive Guide to DX and Media Programmes
is also included.

5/2. I just heard an announcement on Oldies 990 CKGM in Montreal,
pluggin their format change on Monday to The Team. The announcement was
at 4:47 PM Eastern.
The announcement mentions that "The countdown is on" to Canada's all
sports radio network. They also indicate that "On Monday, everything
changes".
No word yet on whether there will be any call change. Presumably not,
but they will most likely become a non-IDer, most likely with generic
"The Team" IDs. There will be a local Montreal morning show on the
station, where we would probably hear Team 990 IDs. If you don't have
this 50,000 watter logged with their CKGM Oldies 990 IDs, you better try
to do it soon. The changeover takes place Monday morning. I am not
sure yet, but I have heard that it may be effective at 7 AM eastern.
A website has also been set up by Chum Limited, owners of the station,
and of the network across Canada. I found it at: http://www.team990.com

Sheldon's note below made me check out www.team1040.com where I found
a similar page. I passed this info on to the Northwest broadcasters
excellent site (http://members.home.net/nwbroadcasters/ ). Their
webmaster checked it out and advised me that the 1040 website is NOT in
fact owned by CHUM. No doubt it's someone speculating?
So for now, the CKST-1040 site would seem to continue to be
www.am1040.com
And further to Patrick Martin's note on their audio quality, I have
noticed them going off the air at least 3 times in the past 6 months for
2 or more hours for maintenance -- and at odd times, like mid-evening!

Sports stations all do horribly in the ratings, until you realize that
they are niched to one of the most rich ad targets in America. For
example, WFAN in New York averages about a 2.5 share and is 15th to 19th
in the ratings. But it delivers a concentration of men of the right age
and profile that it is New York's top billing station and has been for
the last 6 years or so. It is also the #1 or #2 highest billing station
in the US. So, without very good ratings, most sports stations are very,
very profitable.

The Expos won't have a flagship station, but at least they will be on
the radio in English with a two-year contract signed with CKGM 990.
I mis-spoke in my previous posting. It seems that the change over to
The Team will be at 3 PM, not 7 AM, on Monday, May 7.
Montreal English language radio is in a sad state, but French radio in
the city is not much better. Just ask French Montrealers, many of whom
listen to English radio, as bad as it is.
And don't forget that the majority of English radio stations in
Montreal are owned by companies whose head offices are not in Quebec!
This all has nothing to do with the Quebec government, Bill 101,
separatism, etc. It's just about bad radio. Also if so many English
Quebecers hadn't hit the 401 (highway) to Toronto with their tails
between their legs as soon as the PQ government first took power, that
party wouldn't have the strength that it has today. Did all these
transplanted English Montrealers in Toronto influence changes in the
Toronto radio scene. I think not. They may have brought smoked meat and
poutine to Toronto, but not much more. Just ask Stockwell Day!!
They have had more of an impact on the Montreal media scene than they
have on the Toronto scene. The 401 goes two ways and Montreal is
experiencing its biggest revitalization in many, many years. CBC Radio
recently did a report on ex-Montrealers returning to the city.
Hopefully their return will have an impact on the radio scene as well.

Not only 990 but CHUM 1050 Toronto is in its swan song right now.
Playing old 60's and 70's shows as it gets ready to pull the plug on
Moday and go to webcasting only. Incredible memories and all those great
DJ's! Didn't know Canadians were such sports fans. I only know a few
dozen personally and they like rock.

I just noticed that the new "Ottawa Airport Parking Information
System" TIS has been activated on 1630. It has a female announcer in
English and a male announcer in french, giving, as you might suspect,
parking info. No info on the callsign yet. This 99 W station should be
an interesting target for some of you folks... for me, it's just plain
bad news. :-(

Moving my listening station to a different part of the house farther
away from our noisy electrical panels has really improved conditions on
the lower end of the band, but it has also surfaced some other QRM
sources. Our child-proof nightlights give off a wicked buzz when on,
and my little Sony recording walkman gives an interesting warble on
certain frequencies. Finally, there is the unid neighborhood warble
that is strong near powerlines but from which you never quite escape. I
mention this because I was wondering if DX News could open up a section
for reporting new QRM sources. Seeing as there are almost as many as
there are radio stations, and that the challenge of identifying them is
often greater than that of IDing stations, it seems that we could define
a whole new branch of the hobby. Now, how to get them to QSL...

5/3. DX This morning revealed an 'ugly' talk show while fishing for DX
killing the few moments before I walk to the ship to start the work day.
I haven't been able to look up the call sign or COL yet, but here

EDT. "The Steve Cain Show" on 'WNN'. Said to be rebroadcast overnight...
Caller very upset that Mr. Cain won't answer his question about his
statement about his hatred toward abortion Doctors. Host Mr. C said that
he gets to ask the questions - callers can't ask him anything... they
only answer his ?s... followed by an ad for Grossberg Hebrew Memorial
Chapel/Cemetery. Followed by British Diagnostics Institute's 'male
dysfunction' apparatus sales... Host returns and says they're on 740AM
and 1470 AM with a toll free # "930-2326". Female caller 'Rene' calls
and slings racial slurs and personally attacks the host, who basically
sits back and lets her rant about his 'bi-racial children', brushes her
off laughing. Signal appeared to be an "S-9" local quality. I wish I had
a tape recorder so I could send this to Fred for his "bad radio"
project. It was beyond bad radio.

Some recent daytime listening gave me an opportunity to make a quick
compilation of metro-Boston pirate activity:

On 1570, WNSH is the usual dominant. Lately this has been off air
much of the time, leaving WPEP Taunton dominant with a bit of the Lowell
pirate and probable WFOG (eastern LI) way under. Yesterday (Thurs., 26
APR) during afternoon drivetime I heard WNSH back on with a tape loop
test consisting of the following: man said "WNSH is conducting equipment
performance measurements as required by the Federal Communications
Commission." 30 second test tone (approx. 1 kHz pitch), man then said
"WNSH is improving its transmitter facilities to better serve the public
in the greater Beverly area. You're listening to 1570 WNSH, Beverly,
Massachusetts.", another 30 sec. test tone. (Judging by the mushiness of
the voice audio and the rather feeble signal at only about 15 miles,
these guys definitely should be working on these improvements ! This
thing gets out only a little better than the average pirate.)
Bruce Conti and I did a bit of DXing Wednesday evening (25 APR) from
the salt-marsh in Rowley, MA. Conditions were decidely sub-par with
only Canary Islands on 621 pushing the S-meter over S9 (as far as TA's
went). Pretty good signals from Mauritania-783, Ceuta-1583.64, Canaries-
1179, and a few others. Very little from Latin America and not much
other than high-band Spain coming from Europe. This is probably a good
DX in the midwest, but it's pretty wimpy compared to what can normally
be heard at a metro-Boston shore site at sunset.
Sanford, ME on 1220 was noted about 80 Hz low (i.e. on 1219.92). They
were running a 1 kHz tone test (what's with all these tone tests ?) so
"carriers" at 1218.92 and 1220.92 resulted. What a mess ! WRIB-RI and
CKCW-NB were in there (on 1220.0) when the rubbish from Maine was
nulled.

Re: Cayman Islands on 1555, this transmitter has been silent for
several years now. Sometime back, I finally received a reply as to the
status from a station staffer, who said it was off due to parts
problems. They had no intent of reactivating due to having FM services
in place. There was some discussion about selling the transmitter to a
buyer elsewhere in the Caribbean, but that never materialized. As for
1205 kHz, they let it limp along until it too wore out, which was after
1555 went off.

Hi all. Some help please. I had a station on 640 last night (4/29)
between 10:45& 11:15 with a ESPN station broadcasting the Atlanta versus
Arizona baseball game. I was expecting to hear Radio Dizzy from
Philadelphia/ New Jersey! Which is what I usually here. During
commercial breaks they mention "Mojo Radio" and " radio station for
guys" and "new talk radio 640" They also had many mentions of Toronto.
But I did not get an ID with call letters just "Mojo radio". This is a
new station for me but what are the calls for it. Maybe Saul can help on
this one?? I know last week there was talk of a new format called radio
Mojo in Detroit I believe.

This one has me stumped - a station on 1070 Monday night, heard with
C&W at 2140-2210 EDT. Rough copy with CBA and CHOK dominating, but
occasional good peaks. At 2148 an ID: "you're listening to Classic K(?)
Country, WNHO". All of the C&W stations in the East appear to be
daytimers, and none of them (or for that matter, any stations on 1070)
have callsigns that are remotely similar to WNHO. Can anyone shed some
light on this mystery?

circuit, read there is a Kiwa mod for this but does it work only on AM,

I modified my 535's AGC several years ago and, IMHO, it's a very
useful improvement for this receiver and it works in all modes.
Modification is very simple. You must work on the "CAE-227A IF AMP UNIT"
circuit board, connecting a resistor between the positive side of
capacitor C104 and the negative side of capacitor C105. Looking to the
components side, C105 is near the upper side of the board, on the left;
C104 is again on the left, in the middle of the board, just under IC7.
I chose a 840 kiloohm resistor, but you can try other values to get
different AGC times; a little 1/4 - 1/8 watt resistor will do. This
modification isn't mine, but I can't remember whose idea it was; anyway,
a big thank you to its author!

will be published tonight (30 April - local evening) on the EMWG

There are a lot of changes. Apart from the many, many corrections to
station information, disappeared stations, new stations, etc. I have
also gotten rid of the feedback page. Not that feedback is no longer
welcome, mind you, but I replaced it by something that I hope will grow
to something useful to everyone using the list: an overview of the best
internet sites on Long and Medium Wave. For now you will find my
personal selection only, but should you have a suggestion, just drop me
a line. You will also notice a considerable increase in station internet
links. There are now more than 400 links to station's e-mail addresses
and url's.
The current EMWG has a total of 79 pages, packed with information on
literally all long wave and medium wave stations in Europe, North Africa
and the Middle East. As these bands are subject to constant changes, the
EMWG is never fully perfect, but it should be the most accurate source
you can find on this subject.
The EMWG is published -as usual- as a PDF file. This can be read
without any problem by Acrobat Reader 4 (or higher) that can be
downloaded for free from the internet. However, as some people have
trouble downloading a PDF file, I am offering the file as a zip file
(799 kB). This means that when you have downloaded the zip file, you
need to unzip it first. Only then will you have a PDF file that you can
open in Acrobat Reader.
I have one question for you on this matter. Can you tell me whether
you print the EMWG on paper or use it on-line in Acrobat Reader? Should
a sufficient amount of users make use of the PDF file rather than
printing it out, I may add bookmarks next time so that you can easily
jump from one part of the EMWG to the other.
Please note that the EMWG is available for free via my website. (By
the way, why are many other publications not available for free in PDF
format???) People who wish to receive a printed version (in loose leafs

At the local "Friends of the Library" Book Sale today, I found
something rather interesting... "THE FIRST QUARTER-CENTURY OF AMERICAN
BROADCASTING" by E.P.J. Shurick, Advertising & Promotion Director of
KMBC Kansas City, published by Midland Publishing Co., Kansas City,
1946. On the back of the dust jacket there's a rubber-stamp "Received

Columbia News Bureau; news during the war etc.); "The Woman's Role in
Broadcasting" (soap operas; women as entertainers; Kate Smith etc.);
"Advertising Provides the Wherewithal" (commercialism starts on WEAF;
electrical transcriptions etc.); and on to the 16th chapter, called
"Looking Forward to Other Quarter-Centuries" (Broadcasting now a going
business; survival of the fittest; new scientific developments; FM;
facsimile; TV; No limit to wireless development since there is no limit
to distance). No idea yet how good (or bad) a writer this guy was, or
his track record for historical accuracy etc. But it should be fun to
read through. Anybody ever heard of this book, much less read it??

Behemoth broadcaster steps on KSCO

Even a liberal has to feel sorry for Michael Zwerling.
The 49-year-old former real-estate investor bought Santa Cruz 10,000-
watt radio station KSCO-AM (1080) 10 years ago, in part to give
conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh a forum in a city so far to the
left it has almost slipped off the map. But last week, Clear Channel
Communications, the radio, concert and billboard behemoth that owns the
syndication of Limbaugh, Laura Schlessinger and Art Bell, announced it
was taking the shows off the independently owned station and moving them
to a competing Salinas AM station that it owns. The move to 5,000-watt
KTX-AM (1460) will take place June 1. Zwerling was stung. For years he'd
faced the wrath of his liberal neighbors, and those three shows made up
a good chunk of his broadcast day. He had built ratings of about 2
percent of the Monterey Bay market, a relatively strong showing given
competition from San Jose and San Francisco stations. The week after the
announcement, his phone mail was packed with passionate messages, for
and against the move. Some thought it was a liberal conspiracy. And
then, even Limbaugh took a shot at him, on the air, claiming that he
couldn't tell the full story on his national show, for fear the Santa
Cruz station would cut him off. ``I think it was uncalled for,
inappropriate and wrong. We didn't cut it off and we wouldn't cut it
off,'' says Zwerling, a flamboyant and emotional man who does a Saturday
morning talk show on his station. Zwerling is mixed in his reactions. On
one hand, he knows it's just a business decision that has affected about
100 independent broadcasters. ``If I were Clear Channel I would be doing
the same thing,'' he says. On the other hand, he now knows what it's
like to be a victim of a marketplace that is rapidly shifting into what
some view as monopolistic. Clear Channel not only owns some 1,200
stations -- the radio hardware - in Zwerling's words -- but it also owns
the software, the syndicated shows. ``Clear Channel paid like $51
million for Rush; $71 million for Laura and $9 million for Bell. For
that money, it was like buying radio stations all over the country. It's
a brilliant move from a business point of view, but I'm not sure it's in
the interest of the consumer.'' The San Antonio-based Clear Channel
bought Dallas's AM/FM in a deal approved in August, making it the
largest radio company in the country with 1,170 stations. Nearest
competitor Cumulus has 235 stations. CBS/Viacom has 185 stations. And
Clear Channel is also the country's largest concert promoter, owning a
piece of entertainment ranging from the Broadway show ``The Producers''
to the latest U2 tour. It owns local promoter Bill Graham Presents. The
huge growth in radio corporations began in 1996, when Congress, in
response to complaints from then-suffering smaller broadcasters,
deregulated the industry, increasing the number of stations that could
be owned, so that they could streamline business operations and increase
profits. The result in this case may have some benefits for the
community, even as it was a stick in the eye to the small broadcaster
who filled much of his day with nationally syndicated commentators.
Zwerling, who says he wasn't really listening to much Rush anymore, has
begun a campaign to develop more local shows. The station's recent
ratings have dropped a bit (although the paid programming in the middle
of the day can't help much).

Paid Ads Can Name That Tune

One of the things that drives some people nuts about radio is hearing
a song they like, then not having anyone tell them what it was.
The problem: As stations speed up the pace ("less talk, more music"),
many have stopped "back announcing," figuring core listeners know the
songs anyhow.
But one thing can bring song identifications back: money. Sam Goody's,
with Epic Records, has been buying "back announcements" for Jennifer
Lopez's "Play" on WKTU (103.5 FM).
The spot identifies the song, then says it's available at Goody's,
says Chris Nadler, marketing manager for the Musicland group that owns
Goody's.
The spots are part of a larger ad package that also includes 12
separate 60-second spots and back announcements for another artist,
Anastasia.
"They didn't want to sell just back announcements yet," says Nadler.
"So we did the bigger deal. We also set up prominent store displays with
a 'KTU logo."
Nadler says sales have risen since the announcements began, but it's
hard to isolate a specific one-on-one effect so soon from a relatively
small number of spots.
Goody's is thinking about a bigger buy, he says, for newcomer Blu
Cantrell and her single "Hit 'Em Up Style." "Jennifer Lopez may have
been on the safe side," he says. "It could be more interesting to see if
this helps with Anastasia or Blu."
He distinguishes these spots from pay-for-play, explaining they hook
Goody's onto songs that would be spun anyway. He also acknowledges that
while the back announcements mention Goody's, song identification could
easily help other retailers as well. He says he can live with that.
"The biggest complaint our customers have about radio is the lack of
back-announcing," he says. "People come in all the time saying, 'I heard
this song and one of the lines is such and such, but I don't know the
name.' So maybe this will make life easier for them. And for our
clerks."
