The June edition of International Listener's "Shortwave News" has been
uploaded, and it's a special round-up of items focused on the BBC World
Service's last month on shortwave to North America and Australia.

There's an International Listener exclusive--BBC exec: World Service cutbacks
are "a done deal"--our conversation with Jerry Timmins, head of the Americas
Section...British Consulate-General in Houston hears complaints, and other UK
government offices in U. S. report listener reaction is building..."BBC On
Air" magazine breaks the news, as Director Mark Byford writes "we're making
changes that will affect the way some of you will be able to receive BBC
World Service in English on shortwave"...Byford appears on "Write On" and
takes tough questioning from host Nick Baker...BBC World Service web site
answers a few more questions...Some shortwave frequencies probably still
receivable in the U. S. and Australia...Getting ready for the loss: listeners
post reactions on shortwave lists...Glimpses into decision found in BBC
e-mail responses...London's Lord Mayor comments on BBC decision ("Write to
the Prime Minister, write to the BBC")...Listeners write UK agencies seeking
reversal of BBC decision...PRI's "Marketplace" covers BBC
decision..."Passport to World Band Radio" publisher speaks out ("Worst idea
since the Stamp Act: BBC to lose majority of audience in most influential
nation on earth")...Letters to newspapers protest BBC cutback plans ("Losing
sight of technology's human element"--Financial Times)...and International
Listener polls "programs I will most miss hearing when BBC World Service
drops shortwave to North America and Australia."

There are other shortwave news items, such as cutbacks at Radio Canada
International and the return to shortwave of Radio Yugoslavia. But those
will be chronicled in the following "Shortwave News." This month's edition
spotlights the year's biggest shortwave news story--the BBC World Service is
to become DX again.

As the Voice of America's Kim Andrew Elliott says, "Shortwave will not be the
same without BBC World Service. BBC World Service will not be the same
without shortwave."

Thanks for having a look.
