[HCDX] DX loggings from Grayland, WA - July 14-15, 2001



Last weekend, I took a trip to the ocean with my ten year old son.  Our
venue was Grayland, a small town on the Washington coast and home to
many previous DXpeditions.  Naturally, I took my trusty Drake R8A with
me, and put up an 800 foot East-West Beverage between the motel and the
beach.  I checked the dial around sunrise both mornings and found
conditions were relatively good (at least for mid-summer DXing). 
Several NZ/Aussie stations were in on medium wave, and a handful of Far
East stations were briefly heard 7/14.  Not much from the Pacific
islands, but I only listened around local sunrise, after most of the
island stations had signed off.  I also tuned around on shortwave, and
heard a few interesting catches.  Results are listed below.

530	ALASKA, Adak, 1129 7/15 beacon with "ADK" identifier o/TIS
stations.  Only 25 watts according to www.airnav.com web site.
612	AUSTRALIA, Brisbane, 4QR, 1235 7/14 good w/country mx //1548, easily
separable from 610
620	HAWAII, Hilo, KIPA, 1123 7/15 atop w/oldies, "620 & 790, ?? for the
big island" mention
657	NEW ZEALAND, Wellington,  1223 7/14 good w/easy listening vocal mx
//882/963.  1201 7/15 news, 1204 ad for Christian something, into 
EZL/Christian mx, "Southern Star" ID 1226, strong at times but many deep
fades
684	AUSTRALIA, Kempsey, 2KP, 1236 7/14 weak w/country mx //1548 etc
702	AUSTRALIA, Sydney, 2BL, 1237 7/14 country mx & talk //1548 etc
mixing w/unid
738	AUSTRALIA, Grafton, 2NR, 1257 7/14 fair w/country mx //1548, no sign
of Tahiti
738	FRENCH POLYNESIA, Papeete, 1240 7/14 monster signal w/group
discussion in French, then inst mx, no 740 splatter, even with 6KHz 
selectivity setting.  Not heard during later rechecks.  Also 1231 7/15
woman in French o/2NR
747	AUSTRALIA,Toowoomba, 4QS 1242 7/14 country mx //1548 et al, fair
747	JAPAN, Sapporo, JOIB, 1140 7/14 fair in KXL-750 splat w/man & woman
in Japanese
774	UNID, 1309 7/15 either 3LO or JOUB w/inst mx //747(JOIB or 4QS). 
Either combination is possible, though propagation to Australia was 
much more viable at the time.  No sign of 3LO otherwise, even though
many other Aussies were in well.
783	NEW ZEALAND, Wellington, 2YB, 1157 7/14 light jazz mx, then Access
Radio ID 1200:30
792	UNID, 1234 7/15 male EE briefly u/4RN, possibly R Sport
792	AUSTRALIA, Brisbane, 4RN 1303 7/14 still in well w/ABC nx, Radio
Australia pgm 1306
882	NEW ZEALAND, Auckland, 1224 7/14 EZL vocals //657 fair through heavy
KIXI-880 splat.  Same thing 1226 7/15.
890	ALASKA, Homer, KBBI (tentative), 1143 7/14 strong station playing
old bluegrass and blues songs way atop freq, lost under CJDC by 	1150. 
Again strong 1114 7/15 w/jazz/blues songs, brief anmt saying it was the
"Blues Before Sunrise" pgm 1130.  No ID but KBBI's 	web site says they
carry the show at this time
891	AUSTRALIA, Adelaide, 5AN 1240 7/15, good w/news, then S Australia wx
, "10 past 10, this is ABC news" 
963	NEW ZEALAND, Dunedin, 1223 7/14 weak w/EZL mx //657
1035	NEW ZEALAND, Wellington, 2ZB, 1218 7/14 nx pgm, NZ-accented ancrs,
briefly good.  Again 1229 7/15 with "Newstalk Zed B" ID
1098	UNID, 7/14 1247 & other times,  strong carrier, weak audio,
possibly Marshall Islands.  Same thing 1256 7/15.
1287	JAPAN, Sapporo, JOHR, 1153 7/14, Japanese talk fair-poor
1332	AUSTRALIA, Bundaberg, 4BU, 1244-1250+ 7/15, strong at times but
many deep fades, old rock songs (Carole King, Rod Stewart, etc), 1248 
ID "...on Classic Gold 4BU"
1332	JAPAN, Nagoya, JOSF, 1152 7/14 Japanese talk weak
1386	JAPAN, NHK2, 1154 7/14, Japanese talk briefly good
1475	MALAYSIA, 1225 7/15, weak carrier separable from unid-1476 
1548	AUSTRALIA, Emerald, 4QD, 1231-1300 strong w/pgm about an Aussie
country mx artist w/on-air interviews and songs.  Made it easy to 	check
other freqs for parallels, using the second VFO in the R8A.  Fanfare
1300, then woman w/ABC nx, gradually disappeared by 1305.  	Much weaker
7/15 at various times.
1566	S KOREA, Cheju, HLAZ, 1156 7/14 JJ rlgs pgm weak-fair 
2310	AUSTRALIA, 1104 7/14 fair //2485/2325 w/female blues song
3205	PNG, 1113 7/14 vernacular talk //2410 good
3235	PNG, 1121 7/14 good w/DJ in local language, appeared to be a top
song countdown, jingle about #1 song, then played it
4460	UNID,  1323 7/14 Asian talk u/RTTY station
4607	UNID, 1326 7/14 Indonesian sounding mx, then talk w/low modulation,
probably RRI Serui listed on 4606
4753	INDONESIA, Ujung Pandang, RRI (tentative) 1329 7/14, Indo type mx,
ad or promo by man & woman.  Indo mx & anmts 1328 7/15 fair, no ID 	but
only thing listed
4789	INDONESIA, RRI Fak Fak, (tentative) 1330 7/15 Indo pop music u/loud
utility stn with sweep tones.  No ID.
4850	CHINA, CNR  1400 7/15, time signal (5 short, then one long tone) &
Chinese talk fair
4890	PNG, Port Moresby, strong w/ pop mx pgm 1117 7/14, request line #
329-5382, TC's 3 minutes slow.  Still there, the only 60 meter 	station
still audilble, strong w/"Late Night Radio" pgm, EE pops
dedications/requests, 1401 s/off announcement listing MW freqs, 4890, 	&
90.7 FM, to return at 5 am, then NA
5030	CHINA, CNR, 1210 7/14, very strong w/CC talk
9170	CHINA, Chinese talk & music fair 1438 7/15, pronounced echo noted
on this freq plus 9380 9675 9810 11800 & other Chinese outlets, 
apparently some long path was getting through
9465	SAIPAN, KFBS (tentative) 1556 7/14 Russian mx & talk fair, seemed
to be giving closing anmt w/address but I don't know Russian.  No 
definite ID but matches what's listed
9595	JAPAN, Radio Tampa, 1454 7/14 JJ talk strong, 1459 signoff anmt
giving thickly accented call letters for each freq, then off
9905	UNID, 1531 7/14 CC talk mixing with another station, believe I
heard a Zhongyang Renmin Guangbo Diantai  ID, but not sure
10330	INDIA, 1410-1430 7/15 Indian mx & Hindi talk at various checks,
weak but steady signal
11620	INDIA, 1416-1500 7/15 Foreign Service w/Indian mx & English talks
at various times.  News 0756, signoff by woman 0759.  //13710, both 
fair and nearly equal in strength w/no fades
