4TAB Maryborough Qld commenced its service for the Maryborough and
Harvey Bay region on 26/6/01 at a frequency of 1161 khz. This ends the
4MB use of the frequency since they moved to FM at 103.5mhz. 4MB had
been running a loop announcement on 1161 about their move since early
May. 4TAB 1161khz is in // with Brisbane 1008khz as well as 4TAB
Townsville 891khz and Darwin 1242khz.

1160 WELX in Hilliard/Jacksonville, FL is still dark. Not a peep for a
number of months now. Used to relay nothing but Radio Unica's SS talk.
1170 WKLN St. Augustine Beach, FL. In the past week or so, I thought
the freq seemed blank when I was checking in on 1160. Then Thursday I
heard them mid afternoon doing a home shopping show, and off again later
in the afternoon. Could be just because of virtually _constant_
lightning crashes that I'm not getting thier (750w?) signal. Will try
again tomorrow. Used to be AM Stereo, went mono/music of your life to
locally produced standards fare. Will follow up....
1460 WZNZ Jacksonville, FL is no longer // Christain COntemporary Hits
"The Promise 106.5" WBGB-FM Ponte Vedre Beach, FL, but is doing
Satellite Business Talk. (kinda old news)
1530 WOBS Jacksonville, FL's 50kw daytimer - they apparently switched
from "Southern Gospel" bird droppings with a few brokered dollar a
holler preachers and sales pitches to "Urban Gospel", seemingly locally
produced. Plus an occasional urban preacher or sales pitch block.... I
don't know if Metropolitan has given up the station, it was sold or
leased to someone else. And I just airchecked the lunchtime locally DJ'd
gospel music show before they went under/away/whatever...
Question of the day --- Is the WELX 1160 facilty shared with WOBS'?

1570 WGSR Fernandina Beach, FL. I was surprised to find them on Friday
(or was it thursday) but alas, it was a few hours spent on the air with
an Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits CD rolling through the tracks sans
TOH IDs. Demonstrating the station's signal? Technical Adjustments? Who
knows. The telephones are disconnected up there, so I don't know. At
night I get whispers from WSSA Morrow/Atlanta, GA and WCLE Cleveland, TN
(no hint of Radio Amancer). And in the morning the Mt. Airy, NC station
and WTWB Auburndale, FL. One morning I think I got the western Canadian
station doing oldies (call sign alzheimers) but can't say for sure,
wasn't on tape and needed to hear the positioner/ID again... stayed with
it during dawn....

promised. I suspect they came back on yesterday (16th) I'll try to

As I just advised 910 Plant City FL has been resurrected. I set up 2
RX's on 570 and 910 and they went dual right through the hour (2100
Eastern LOCAL Time) ID was Thanks for listening to 910 and 570, WTWD
Plant City and WTBN Pinellas Park. The audio on 910 lags by 150 to 200
ms, sounds like a phone line feed. So I have begun and ended my
listening career on these two freqs in the space of a couple hours, hi.

I just received an e mail from Clear Channel in Salisbury regarding
the X Band CP-1670. They have let it expire, so that one wont be coming
on the air.

As of yesterday CKGY-1170 Red Deer AB is silent for good, having moved
to FM three months ago but the AM side was run in // for the three
months allowed by the CRTC.
CKRD-700 went silent some time ago (also moved to FM) so there are now
no AM stations left in Red Deer, the only station on AM within 60 miles
of Red Deer being the graveyarder in Stettler, CKSQ-1400. However most
of the Edmonton and Calgary AM stations have good signals into Red Deer.

07/22/01 - CKSR FM 98.3 Chilliwack is now testing their new FM
transmitter with slogan "Star 98.3, The Valley's New Light Rock". The
Rogers Broadcasting station, which was started as CHWK in 1927 by Casey
Wells and Jack Menzies of Menzies Hardware, will vacate the AM 1270 spot
later this year. Thanks to Ted Wendland, The Puget Sound Radio Guide
07/24/01 - CE for the Lower Mainland Rogers stations, Jack Wiebe
reports that CFSR FM 107.1 Abbotsford is scheduled to be on air in two
to three weeks. Meanwhile, CKIS FM 100.5 Hope was tested for the first
time yesterday and is expected to be operational in about two weeks.

I made alot of phone calls this morning on my cel phone which didn't
cost me anything, as I get plenty of time that I never use and long
distance included. Here is what I found out about the X Banders that
have not come on as yet.
1620-WJRZ-NJ-Just an appli,no CP
1620-KNNT-NM- has been sold no plans, not certain where the old CP even
went.
1620-KHRT-ND-GM said they were still thinking about it, but have no
plans now.
1620-WAZG-SC- has been sold,so no plans, again not certain where the old
CP went.
1630-KOME-CA- will come on soon(?) but no date.
1630-KNAX-TX, station no sale, but no takers (970), so who knows
according to CE. The call letter change was a whim, as it doesn't mean
anything.
1640-WVMI-MS. This is an interesting one. According to the CE, there was
just an apli, no CP as far as he could find. It may have been a
whim, as they have trouble keepingthe 570-30 year old TX on the
air along with the directional pattern. So I wouldn't hold my
breath on this.
1640-WLHJ-NC, phone number no good, will have to try a new number.
1640-KMKZ-OK, no one knew anything and the GM & CE were out.
1650-WAZJ-GA, no plans at this time.
1650-KBIV-TX, phone number no good, will have to try a new number.
1660-WBHE-NC, no one knew anything, will have to call back CE.
1670-KSUL-CA Will come on it time, but station is for sale I was told.
1680-KRJO-LA, should be on the air soon according to secretary. Look for
it!
1680-KAZJ-WA, will be on in the future, but no date.
1690-WSWK-GA, no one knew, the CE was out.
1690-WHTE-IL, this one will be on by August 2001 with Sports Talk. The
GM has the tx 10/1 KW set up and just needs some parts. Look for
it!
1700-WAYU-NH, this one is not planned. Too bad I was hoping for NH.
1700-KCHT-OR, still planned, no date.
1700-WEZI-VA, also this one is not planned either.
So the only two I can find that should be one very soon is IL-1690 &

stations had fairly weak signals and didn't cover much ground,

Airport. Man giving several minutes worth of info including

from right on the Hudson in Weehawken, NJ, w/local traffic
reports and ads for Panasonic and J&R Music World.
1690 Panasonic Radio Network NY New York City - 7/13 0900 - Heard
from across the Hudson in Weehawken. Station carrying ads for
Panasonic and for J&R Music World and giving traffic updates.

1690 Pirate MA Boston? - 7/3 2210 - Haitian French music & talk by
man. Then a woman called in and in accented English asked the
announcer to pass a message to someone. She mentioned a trip to
Jamaica and gave her phone number. This is the first talking

1690 WQO256 NY Jamaica, Queens - 7/2 0800 - At JFK airport while
waiting for flight, heard "This is a test transmission of the
latest addition to the New York State Highway Advisory Radio
network - WQO256" This has been widely reporting in the East -

1700 WPIC749 PA Philadelphia - 7/14 2100 - Good signal w/mentions of
City of Philadelphia, Festival Pier, Penn's Landing, parking for

never heard it before w/mentions of Festival Pier and parking
info for events. Gave call letters & "City of Philadelphia".
By the way, very interesting conditions last night and tonight.
Canada was strong again last night, and all frequencies seemed to have
the usuals, but at higher signal levels and lower noise levels than
we've seen for a while.
Summer DX continues to roll along with lots of semi-local receptions,
but nothing major. Had a few good days recently with cooler weather, no
t-storms, and good domestic conditions. Those nights would have brought
armchair copy of distant clear channel stations if we still had clear
channels.
Boston-area pirates continue to dominate the x-band. The Lawrence
pirate on 1670 made it in nicely a couple of evenings. While 1690 was
clear, the Boston pirate on that frequency was actually a pest.
I did manage to complete Connecticut, but it required stringing an
antenna specifically to do so. WCCC-1290 is back on frequency, and I
can't hear a peep from them in the morning or evening. But their mid-
day groundwave can make it with a big enough wire. Thanks to the other
CT DXers who provided tips on WCCC. I'm kinda glad that's done, as I
I'm sick of listening to 1290 day after day. Now to try to complete
Rhode Island - have 3 to go. Completing states is easier when you near
so many little ones.

Heard on a Chris Cuff AM stereo modified Delco radio and 85' wire
antenna:
920 XEBH MEXICO, Hermosillo, Sonora 0100 UTC 7/15 slogan "Lo Mejor,
Nueve Veinte" playing SS CHR IN STEREO.
I bought a CHEAP AM/FM radio that would be an excellent beginners DX
radio. Its kind of the son of the Radio Shack 12-655 and its brother 12-
656. The part number is 12-639A and its a cheap, hot little analog AMFM
receiver, its on sale now at Radio Shack.
This was heard on the 12-639A son of 12-655.
1140 KSFN NV, Las Vegas 0635 7/27 using a different slogan. The old
one was cruisin 1140. They are now using "Hot Talk 1140."
1260 KWYR SD, Winner 0005 7/27 station promo " Your country leader in
sports" then singing ID, "KWYR".
1390 KENN NM, Farmington 0000 7/27 ToH ID and slogan "You're listening
to KENM, Farmington's news leader".

are listening to a test broadcast operating on 1700 kHz AM from
CalTrans." Signal strength and loop direction suggest this would
be WNSB415, which is moving here from 530 kHz to escape XEJAZZ-
540. Transmitter is located at CA-905 at Beyer Blvd. (between I-

As I mentioned my ship visited the Virgin Passage (no comments about
230 sailors in the V.P., please.. lol...) (well, alright, go ahead).
I have about 6 cassettes, at least 2 or 3 C-120s that I recorded IDs,
DX and short airchecks of AMs on.
Here's what I skimmed so far from about 1.75 if them.
June 29th 2001, just before 7pm eastern. St. Marten NA, Phillipsburg.
1300 PJD2: during long break toward end of hour long local news block.
Promo; Caribbean Gold radio show....Promo "News and Views"...every wed.
at 8:15AM by the National Progressive Party....Promo - "Culture Club"
radio show every sat. 1:30PM.... ID: "This is the voice of St. Marten,
P-J-D-2. 13-00 AM, Broadcasting from ...(highway?) 21 St. Marten,
Netherland Antillies" into Master Review music program... signal fair at
best. Ton o' splash from WRRA 1290.
7:00:20PM - You're listening to WRRA 12-90 The Reef. Simulcasting with
WAJX 103.5FM in the United States Virgin Islands. Our transmitters are
in Frederiksted. Our studios are at 79A Casa Cokley. We are in Saint
Croix. WRRA 1290 AM & WAJX 103.5 FM...jingle...'Radio.. gets results'
into World Web Radio Network news. signal city grade... off southerly
side of Vieques Island.

900khz - 'Radio Venezuela' multiple IDs at 8PM break. signal very
armchair - city grade on walkman sized Aiwa radiocassette with digital
tuning readout. Not a peep out of the 895 station heard earlier during
daylight with a sight signal and 890 Aciebo, PR in my back pocket...Many
(presumed) Venezuelans were out virtually from the onset of dusk,
clobbering local 1190 WBMJ San Juan (which //'s over 1370 WIVV Vieques),
1370 Vieques, from about 10 miles or so from that island...
Many of my other notes were on local ID catches... #15 - 740khz...#16
760khz....
Alrighty, I found the ID collector tape (of many) I made from my trip
to the Virgin Passage between Eastern Puerto Rico, Vieques, US Virgin
Islands. While off of Vieques, on June 29th at 9PM I found a 630khz
ID... first of all the evening signal was good and very readable. This
is on an older Aiwa walkman-sized radiocassette recorder, on the water
underway. I'd say that it was within the realm of armchair copy. Strong,
not top of the city grade scale. ID'd four radio stations, WUNO "Sin-
ron", the other calls I can't decipher from SS but they go from there to
(WAPA????)"Ponce". W---"Mayaguez", and W---Arciebo (near the Roosevelt
Roads Base?). I can hear the letters well, just can't translate it well.
David, if you'd like the clip, let me know. I may have the other
stations on tape as well, I am just beginning to get to the 25% point of
all the recordings.

Last weekend, I took a trip to the ocean with my ten year old son.
Our venue was Grayland, a small town on the Washington coast and home to
many previous DXpeditions. Naturally, I took my trusty Drake R8A with
me, and put up an 800 foot East-West Beverage between the motel and the
beach. I checked the dial around sunrise both mornings and found
conditions were relatively good (at least for mid-summer DXing). Several
NZ/Aussie stations were in on medium wave, and a handful of Far East
stations were briefly heard 7/14. Not much from the Pacific islands,
but I only listened around local sunrise, after most of the island
stations had signed off. I also tuned around on shortwave, and heard a
few interesting catches. Results are listed below.

Surface observers stationed at 19 U.S. cities recorded the daytime
occurence of signals and signal fraction on an hourly basis for the
period April 1999 through April 2000. Each observation uses one of four
main categories to report signals as unobserved, non-persistent, and
indeterminate. Additional classification includes the co-occurence of
signals with each report. The data cover much of the continental U.S.
including locations near major commercial radio stations. The mean
annual frequency of occurence in unobstructed listening conditions is 13
percent for these sites. Signal occurence varied substantially with
location and season. Most signals occured during the winter months and
least during the summer with a pronounced minimum during July. Although
nocturnal observations are not available, it appears that the signals
have a dirunal variation that peaks from sunset to sunrise over most
areas. Signals were most often observed in areas near major commercial
radio stations and least often over areas far removed from the heaviest
radio traffic. A significant correlation exists between mean signal
frequency and power usage above 5KW suggesting predictive potential for
assessing future signal effects.

I checked the AM band and groundwave was good to Montreal, but using
just a walk-man and a Realistic DX-351 receiver (made primarily for SW-
listening, not for AM use), the reception was poor to verry poor, except
from CINF Infos 690 (690 AM) wich was fairly strong. Here using a good
Sanyo portable, I get verry good day-time groundwave receptions of ALL
the Ottawa stations from my QTH near Montreal. I even get ground-wave
from MA on 590 (WBNW) and 640 (WNNZ), at my home QTH, of course !
On longwave (the multi-band Realistic DX-351 receiver cover the
european LW-BCB 150 - 280), I discovered a cross modulation beetwen a
NDB beacon and CJRC-1150 wich were mixing, CJRC was stronger than the
morse code NDB and when I got back to Pierrefonds, these spurs were
still audible a good 40 km. away, from Gâtineau (a city adjacent to Hull
and Ottawa).

received the signal and got ID like "KRAN, Merced, 15-80 AM, KXLW,
Merced, 16-60 AM, La Rancherita." But I couldn't hear anything like
"KAXW". Did the station change the call from KAXW to KXLW? Or something
happened with it?

Hi all, wondering if I could get some help on a station that I logged
about two months ago! I was going through a note book that I use when I
am DX ing and I came across a station I heard on 1390. I wrote down that
they ID ed as "... and more inspirational music on Joy 1390". This was
at 10:50 PM eastern time with a poor to somewhat fair signal. We have a
local station on 1400 which was splashing over to 1390. The station was
playing black gospel type music. It was also mixing with a unID MOYL
station. This station was heard on my Sangean ATS505 receiver and Radio
Shack loop. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob, I would say there's about a 90% chance that this is WGCI in
Chicago. The unid MOYL may have been the station in Jackson, Tennessee.
Both are nightly visitors at my QTH.

Actually, both WGCI and WTJS are extremely rare in the Northeast. In
these parts, religion on 1390 is usually WDCW Syracuse NY (though I'm
not aware of "Joy 1390" ID's) and MOYL music is usually WLAN Lancaster
PA.
Upon further thought, another possibility for black gospel music on
1390 is Charleston SC which I believe ID's as "Heaven 1390." And
Youngstown is another possibility for NOS music. Of course, I now have
a 5000-watt local on 1390 (WZHF) so I don't hear any of those stations
any more!

Could "Joy 1390" be WLCM, Charlotte, MI? I don't know if they use
this slogan, but they are REL format, and make it into this area semi-
regularly on SSS. I've QSLed them in 1988 as WNLF ("New Life").

I have recently become the owner of a transmitter for which I am going
to need some advice on. This unit covers the low end of the medium wave
band, 490 - 512 Khz, and is totally frequency synthesized, built for the
Canadian Reserves in the Yukon Territory. It's mosfet output, takes 24
VDC at around 15 Amps, and is in a rack mount enclosure. Excellent
cosmetic shape and appears to not have had any use. Since this
transmitter puts out a 350 Watt CW signal, it appears that I will need
to apply for the appropriate FCC license to operate this as a CW beacon,
or else if anyone is interested in making me an offer for this
transmitter, let me know. I have the service operations manual with

Did anyone have more information on how to find a good radio for AM
Stereo? I know that the C-Quam technology is used for some AM
broadacsters to transmitt in streo here in North America and in Mexico
as well, but don`t know how to find any AM Stereo radio. All the radio I
know of are AM mono.

Dolbeau/St-Félicien, CFGT 1270 Alma, CFED 1340 Chapais, another one from
Chibougamau (CJMD 1240, but I'm not sure) and a sister musical FM
station, CKYK 95.7 which is not affiliated with the networks, but owned
by Antenne 6. The two stations from Chapais and Chibougamau are just
rebroadcasting CHRL 910 signal. Regularly, CFGT rebroadcast CHRL signal
for some programming, while CHVD is usually independent. That's why you
heard two station ID while listening CHRL, you heard that: "CHRL 910
Roberval, CFGT 1270 Alma, membres du groupe radio Antenne 6". There's
also some times when some stations names all the stations from the radio
network. I hope you enjoy DXing, I never tried that. There are plenty of
american stations I can listen to during night, but I'm just not
interested in finding out where they are.

After the recent discussions about Grenada-535 possibly changing
frequencies I decided to ask the "official" source about the present
frequency. With all of the 3 or 4 radio stations on Grenada the
officials apparently have their hands full and can't keep up with the
data. :-) Here is the interesting reply that I received:
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Grenada,
will like to inform you that at present we are in the process of
gathering information, and are unable to provide you with the requested
information at this point in time.

The FCC has launched the first phase of a major redesign of its web
site. The idea is to provide greater uniformity in the pages, and to
make it easier to find information fast (an expanded and improved search
function is being added in stages).

The web page layout has been remarkably and effectively simplified.

incorporating so many positive changes.

As Bruce Conti pointed a couple of weeks ago on AM-DX News-Flash, I
checked http://www.esmas.com/radio and the mexican AM station in Mexico
DF seem to have changed their format. I wonder if they have also changed
their power. Did they run lower-power, as well. On the real-audio stream
of XEX-730, I can hear another station (probably Musquiz`s XEPQ)
interfering underneath. XEX used to have a 100 kW transmitter for 730
AM. Did the same transmitter is used now ? What is about XEW (900) and
XEWA (540) ? And XEQ Enamorada 940; they used to call theirself La
TropiQ...

In my 21 years of AM Dxing in the Chicago area, I managed to hear
several interesting stations during daytime. The stations you mention
(WHAS, CKLW, WSM) make it into Chicago during daytime hours, but it is
not a daily occurance.
I have compiled a Chicago AM Daytime Bandscan, which only lists
stations that make it to Chicago on regular basis. You can check it out

including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule
in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. The call letter index gives

completely updated from the 1998 edition and carefully cross-checked by
