[HCDX] RFE/RL does not want to leave Prague’s city center

Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, HQ in Prague, the Czech Republic
(latest development, JAN 12, 2002)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty keeps resisting the Czech government’s
advices to move the station’s headquarters from Prague’s city center to
outskirts out of the security reasons.
The building in which the station resides is located in the very center of
Prague, with a number of historical buildings all around, a national museum
just accross the street, the main Prague’s square (Wenceslav Square) with
many people day and night, main railway station and subway crossing - all of
this is nearby the RFE/RL HQ. An incidental bomb attack against the HQ would
cause immense damages.
The Czech government has already chosen 5 buildings outside the city centre,
but RFE/RL says neither of the buildings fits the station’s special
requirements.
Now the station resides in a building of the former communist parliament.
The building has been offered to the station by Czech president Havel
several years ago for a symbolic hire of 1 Czech Crown per year (= 0,03
USD).
The station’s speaker Sonia Winter said JAN 11, that RFE/RL decided to
accept the moving plans but the station does not want to leave the city
center.
It seems the employees of the station simply do not want to drive some 20 km
ouside Prague to their new working place. Almost all of them are living in
the city center (Prague 1, 2 and 3).
The former rumours that RFE/RL was going to move to Tallinn or Budapest
remained rumours...
