BUT -- Don?t do the anti-chuffing mod described on the web
page.  There is a much simpler (and easily reversible) one where you
clip a wire that is soldered to a point on the board marked ?Mute?.
I?ve attached the original message from about a year ago.  I did this
to my radio and it?s been fine ever since.

  Anti-Chuffing.
  Hello,
  Following a previous post - I finished
the Anti-Chuffing mod for the second time. This time I disconnected the
black wire that goes in between the two connectors on control board and
main board. This is also labelled as 'Mute' on the main board. I did
not cut the wire. I pulled out the pin from connector on the main board
side, after flattening the minature projection on pin that keeps it stuck
there. Then wraped the pin in an insulating tape. This mod will let me
put the connector pin back if I want to.
I think that this is a better
mod than that published on http://www1.shore.net/~dmoisan/faqs/sangean/ats909faq.html
  Why?
I don't understand the working of the mod described on the listed web
site. Whether it will cause any ill side effects. That requires some
  gawking at the circuit diagram.
The new mod is simpler, as this
principle can be used probably in any dig radio. I have done this for
Sangean ATS-808A and some un-named brand radio that I bought in France.
What I did was reverse trace the amplifier circuit and look for
tracks/wires that did a signal transition while tuning. It can be seen as
deflection on multimeter needle. This was not necessary for the
current mod, as I had the circuit diagram, and the main board clearly
  labelled the connector.

  Andrew,
  Some mods are
  here:
  http://www1.shore.net/~dmoisan/faqs/sangean/909mods.html
  You'd
probably be interested in trying the anti-chuffing mod, I
  think?
