Radio For Peace International (RFPI) serves as the global messenger of
peace and hope to the farthest reaches of the earth. The ultimate goal
of RFPI is to create peace in hearts, homes, communities, and all
nations of the world. In order to foster a worldwide culture of peace,
RFPI transmits programs via shortwave and the Internet. The programs
champion human rights; increase global awareness; promote tolerance;
inform and educate isolated populations; equip listeners to become
architects of peace; expose prejudice, hatred, and injustice; celebrate
diverse cultures; and advocate environmental awareness.
RFPI began broadcasting on shortwave in September, 1987. Shortwave
signals are not stopped by political or geographic boundaries and can
be heard worldwide.
A global media model, RFPI seeks to change the landscape of media,
providing a forum for democratic communications. RFPI's studios and
transmitters are located in El Rodeo, Costa Rica.
Hundreds of thousands of listeners tune in regularly. Letters have
been received from over 120 countries on all continents.

A Message About Our Work
Radio For Peace International was founded in the 1980s because there
was a void in the media and on the shortwave bands, and this still
holds true today. We have dedicated our lives to developing an
alternative media source that brings attention to environmental issues,
the increasing movement of fundamentalism and hate based organizations,
oppression and human rights violations.
Radio For Peace International, through the help of many friends and
supporters, began broadcasting in 1987. We are confident that during
our 14 years of operation we have made a significant impact in bringing
accurate information to the global population.
Shortwave radio, rather than being a medium of the past, is far more
popular than it has ever been. Listenership internationally has
increased significantly over the last ten years. Unfortunately, a large
portion of this increase is directly due to an increase in hate related
broadcasting. We have committed to countering this hateful rhetoric
through our Far Right Radio Review program, our Stop Hate on Radio
campaign, as well as serving as an archival repository housing the
chronicles of hate on radio.
Over 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda, primarily due to the
proliferation of hatred through the use of shortwave radio. This was
alarming. When asked by RFPI Producer Jean Moore in an interview after
the genocide, former Rwandan Prime Minister Mr. Fausin Twagiramungo
stated that had RFPI been involved to counter the hate rhetoric and
provide information on conflict resolution the atrocity could have been
averted.
We are committed to expanding our broadcast facilities to assist in any
conflict situation by providing the message of peace and linking
together all the humanitarian projects and services available in a
conflict area so that people can access the aid they need.
Radio For Peace International provides awareness to bring about change
in situations like the poisoning of groundwater in Colombia affecting
innocent children, the international trafficking of women and children
for prostitution, female genital mutilation, domestic violence and the
decimation of indigenous cultures. Working from the grassroots up, by
providing accurate information in local languages, Radio For Peace
International can effect positive change and save lives.
This is our work. This is our passion and we hope that you will support

raising $1.5 million by the end of the year 2002 to continue our
