Government dismisses alleged terror links, upholds radio decision

7/16/2003

OTTAWA - Today, the federal government announced it has upheld the CRTC's
decision granting Canadian Multicultural Radio a new radio station license
in Toronto at 101.3 FM.

Apparently dismissing complaints (see story on this site, "Radio station
accused of terror links" [7/15/2003]) by some that the new radio station
owners were backed by a terrorist group, the Canadian government issued a
terse release saying, "after a careful review of the petitions received by
the Governor in Council, the Government of Canada announced today its
decision (P.C. 2003-1049) to uphold Decision 2003-115 of the Canadian
Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), concerning the
awarding of an FM Radio license to Canadian Multicultural Radio (CMR) in the
Greater Toronto Area."

The new station will direct its programming primarily to the Greater Toronto
Area's South Asian communities and will provide programming to a minimum of
16 cultural groups in at least 22 languages during each broadcast week. At
least 48% of all ethnic programs broadcast during each broadcast week will
be in the Tamil, Hindi and Filipino languages.
