4885 BRAZIL,   Radio Clube do Para DEC 10 0849 - Back-to-back Brazilian pops and bossa-nova w/ short apparent IDs between many of the tunes, the last was apparently called "madrugada" ("early morning" like in SP !) followed by extensive canned ID at 0900, then live man announcer in PP. (Chiochiu-QC)

6010 MEXICO,   XEOY, Radio Mil, Ciúdad de Mexico, DF DEC 10 0920 - Variated Spanish hot-Adult Contemporary music (ballads, Spanish reggea slightly similar in style to Sergent Garcia and cumbia), apparent talk about the anniversary of a listener's father. "Tres en punto, exacto" at 1000, followed by some music, then canned ID "onda corta ... banda internacional de 49 metros, www.radiomil.com.mx. La (?)" and improving with less and less QRM from Colombian co-channel pest, until it faded completely away and only the weak La Voz de Tu Conciencía was heard. New, Mexico outlet # 4 on SW ! Mexico is a lot easier on SW than on MW for me. SIO 323, over / under the HJ. I also thought I heard it in September after the first week of chemo, but then it was SIO 312 and difficult to listen to (I was also much more tired then) and couldn't get an ID. (Chiochiu-QC)

9580 AUSTRALIA,   Radio Australia, Shepparton DEC 10 1028 - interesting talk program regarding a new theory about mass destruction some 220,000 years ago caused by severe volcan erruption. End of the "talking heads" program, IDs and jingle followed by a man canned announcement about the fact they can be heard all over the South Pacific and Asia as well as relayed by local Papua New Guinea stations. Very good, SIO 434. (Chiochiu-QC)

Conditions on the mediumwave AM band were extremely poor. Even RVC-530 (Turks and Caicos) was fairly weak and yesturday I couldn't get ZIZ-555 at all despite many tries (which I memorated on my newly repared Windows Media Player, since they also broadcast on the Internet). Trans-Atlantic signals were practically inexistent, though when I tuned at almost the mid-distance between the 1380 and 1390 signals on my analog Sanyo MCD-S830 portable, I did notice a high-frequency beat sound. I wonder if any of you can explain clearly what a TA heterodyne sounds like. I couldn't find many recording of "hets" on the Mark Connelly's web-site, and the WBAL-1090 hetted by UK-1089 don't seem to match what I heard. I'd really like to DX the Radio Rurale de Labé from Guinea around 1385.9 or 1386. With VOA Sao Tomé impossible due to overmodulated extremely strong pest on 1570 (even WCKY is tiring to listen to, much worse than the next-to-adjacent CJAD-800 splatter I get when listening to Radio Coro on 780 which is on the same bearing as local CJAD), Senegal-765 on micro-power, the best bet for sub-Saharian Africa in Montreal is Guinea just below nominal 9 kHz multiple of 1386. Mark Connelly hear them much easily than the old plan channel Angolans which will never be received inland. If some of you, especially Mark, wonder what happened with Senegal, I have an answer. I read a few weeks ago an article about the history of Senegal's radio in .PDF, in French, on the web (www.unrisd.org/unrisd/website/document.nsf/d2a23ad2d50cb2a280256eb300385855/ba28329c8e73447d80256b5e0037ab04/%24FILE/sagna.pdf). Since Senegal is more developped that several neighboring countries, FM is quite popular. I presume since RTS has now a good FM network, there is no more need to run super-power on AM. Also, private stations such as Sud FM do steal RTS's audience, and the national public radio is less and less listened and have perphaps less financiary revenues, so they did not have the money to pay for the huge power 765 kHz radiated. By the time, I came up in the scene in the 2000-2001 season, they were already impossible for non-NF Beverage antenna users which is sad.

As you can see as far as these Shortwave logs are concerned, I woke very early like the past Saturday morning. I sleeped only about 5 hours last night and woke at 3:43 AM. But it really paied off ! I logged my 4th Mexican SW outlet and hope to relog Radio Mexico Internacional today. It was really fun to DX Radio Mil on 6010 kHz and to be finally able to ID them. It makes me really want to go to bed early to wake up early for getting them tomorrow too. I definitively think Shortwave DX is more interesting than economical talk programs I could hear if I DXed domestics on MW instead. But as I mention domestic stuff, earlier this week, aside from the foreign and meteor scatter FM DX I reported, I got short-haul CKHJ 1260 with country programming and an unID daytimer on 670 with mentions of Tenesse, commercial ad about wash machine then into talk about why we'd like to shot and to kill. Barry McLarnon very friendly helped me with 1260 (not a big deal, but my third NB station). If anyone can help with 670, I'll appreciate a lot.

Back to shortwave, the low-light was that I was disapointed to find 4885 and a computer QRM ridden 4915 (Radio Anhanguera Gôiana) as the only real DX on 60 meters. No Peruvians at all, on either 60, out-of-band 5.1-5.9 MHz or 49 meters bands. Below 60 meters, my Sangean overloads badly when connected to the long-wire from CFAV-1570 AM, the biggest obstacle in DX here. My only real DX-ever on 90 meters, using the Sangean 606 I had then, was in the 2003 spring in the form of Radio Exterior de España relay from Costa Rica. At that time, nearby 1570 was dark !

Later today or more probably tomorrow, I'll encode the 4885 and 6010 IDs in real-audio and send them to slapshot@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Last, but not least, December usually have a minor peak in TV and FM Sporadic-E propagation up here, related to residual effects of sporadic E due to the summer solstice in the Southern hemisphere. Summer soltice (s) are the best moments for FM DX. I'm not a WTFDA membre anymore, but those of you who do these types of DX, I'd like to know if there is anything happening on the Stereo DX band these times or in the past days. Is Sporadic-E intense in NZ these times ?
