RADIO MIRCHI BAGS SIX MORE FREQUENCIES

Times News Network[ Saturday, February 04, 2006]

DELHI: The government is likely to earn Rs 1,134 crore
as licence fee by selling 338 FM radio stations in 91
cities across the country. Bidding process for the
second phase of private FM radio frequencies concluded
on Friday with the government generating Rs 177.56
crore by auctioning licences for 64 FM radio stations
in 19 cities of the Southern region.

The government has managed to sell 279 radio stations
of the 338 put on the block, and expects to get a
revenue of around Rs 1,134 crore which includes about
Rs 227 crore migration fee, according to a government
source. The existing FM radio operators have an option
to shift to the one-time entry fee (OTEF) regime by
paying a migration fee.

Prominent winners in the fifth leg of the second round
included Entertainment Network India (ENIL) of ?Radio
Mirchi? fame, the Anil Ambani-controlled Adlabs and
Kal Radio.

With the conclusion of the second round, listeners
from 32 cities across the country can tune into Radio
Mirchi. ENIL emerged successful bidder in six cities ?
Coimbatore, Madurai, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram,
Vijaywada and Visakhapatnam. With the entry in the six
Southern cities, Radio Mirchi registered its presence
in all major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata,
Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune.

Radio Mirchi has further consolidated its position now
by commanding a larger share of the lucrative radio
frequencies. ?ENIL will be present in all 32 cities as
we are well within the cap stipulated by the
government,? an ENIL official said.

The government has set a cap which does not allow any
company to have FM radio licences in more than 15% of
total frequencies sold. In more mature markets, say
industry observers, this limit is higher at 33% or
more. ?Media groups, which have crossed the limit of
15%, will have to surrender licences so that the cap
is maintained,? a government official said. The Sun
group, which successfully bid for 67 frequencies, will
surrender excess licences. ?The company will take a
decision in this regard after sometime,? an official
of Sun group said.

The financial bidding process for 338 private FM radio
stations across 91 cities in the second round was
started on January 6, ?06. The bidding process took
place in five stages. First, bids for 13 A and A+
category cities were invited. Subsequently, separate
bids were invited for B, C and D category cities in
North, East, West and South zones.
