[HCDX] VATICAN RADIO?S 75TH ANNIVERSARY.

VATICAN RADIO?S 75TH ANNIVERSARY.

Pope Benedict XVI visited the studios of Vatican
Radio, the broadcasting station of the Holy See, in
Palazzo Pio on 3 March to mark the station?s 75th
anniversary. The pontiff met representatives of the
station?s 39 language sections and viewed its new
offices, and his visit was broadcast live by the radio
itself and on television. ?It?s a day to celebrate the
importance of the station,? said Arben Ndreca, who
works for the Albanian section of Vatican Radio and
was among those who met the Pope. ?During the
communist regime in Albania, Vatican Radio was one of
the few sources of news from the West,? he continued.
?I remember people getting up at 4.30 because they
wanted to listen. It?s the same now for Christians in
places like Iraq and Nigeria.? Vatican radio was
started by Guglielmo Marconi on 12 February 1931 and
was inaugurated by Pope Pius XVI.
