[HCDX] Radio Heritage News #18 Climate Change & Pacific Radio

Radio Heritage News #18 October 2007
Climate Change & Pacific Radio
News from the Radio Heritage Foundation
On-line now at www.radioheritage.net

Radio broadcasting around the Pacific is undergoing rapid
change as you'll read a little further on. Climate change and Pacific
radio? You could win a special gift for sharing your thoughts. Here
at the Radio Heritage Foundation, we're not only presenting stories
from the past....... we're also concerned about the future.

Imagine you run a station anywhere in the Pacific. You're
paying a lot of money for oil to run generators to stay on air. How
are suppliers responding to the need to build 'clean and green'
transmitters that can perform well in tropical conditions? How does
any AM or FM station around the Asia and Pacific region cope with
climate change issues? ........Send an email to
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'climate' in the subject line and tell us
your thoughts.

You've still got a few days to catch our one of our latest
documentaries broadcast over Radio NZ International. Go to
www.rnzi.com and via More Audio and Mailbox, listen to the second
most recent program.......you'll hear a review of broadcasting
throughout the Pacific during the 1940's along with some timeless
Pacific music classics!.........

We've done over 20 of these documentaries now, and listener
feedback and program suggestions are always welcome to
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We recently 'discovered' over 100 new radio stations around the
Pacific! Each year we update the Pacific content for the World Radio
TV Handbook, and for the 2008 edition, there are lots of new stations
listed for French Polynesia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, as well as
places like Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Micronesia...in fact,
nearly everywhere!

As a fundraiser, we'll have special prices on the WRTH 2008
and other books, Radio Hauraki 40th anniversary party tickets,
collectable Art of Radio postcards and much more......check out
www.radioheritage.net shortly.

In recent months, Radio Australia has expanded local FM relay
stations to include Samoa and the Cook Islands, and China Radio
International has opened local FM relay stations in Vanuatu. RNZI is
adding new DRM shortwave transmitters, as are stations in Vanuatu and
the Solomons. A new shortwave station has opened in Palau, more
shortwave stations are planned in Papua New Guinea.

We'll be taking a closer look at a new battle for the hearts,
minds, souls and wallets of Pacific people in a new commentary soon
at www.radioheritage.net.

In the meantime, our Pacific Asian Log Radio Guides have just
been updated at www.radioheritage.net. Over 4000 AM stations are
listed with lots of information you'd have to pay for
elsewhere............
There's a Shortwave Guide as well, and behind the scenes, our FM
Guide is gathering pace and will be much larger than the AM Guide.

To update station listings in these Radio Guides, email
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'PAL' in the subject line.

Of course, lots of new content at www.radioheritage.net as
well...from pirate radio off the coast of Adelaide in the 1960's, to
4ZR Roma [the latest in our Long Lost Australian Radio Stars series],
lots of happenings from the Low Power FM scene around New Zealand
with stories and studio photos, the updated New Zealand Low Power
Radio Guide is now approaching 1150 entries.....

......Martin Hadlow explores the Library of American
Broadcasting in Maryland, and comes face to face with material he
originated nearly 40 years ago, whilst Adrian Peterson's series of
articles on Asian radio history will be expanded shortly...at the
same time as we explore the Shanghai Radio dial in 1931..one of the
most competitive
and commercial radio markets of its time.

Most popular content at www.radioheritage.net continues to be
the Art of Radio series, now covering on-line exhibitions of radio
art from Japan, Hawaii and Australia and New Zealand from the 1930's
to the
1970's. The amateur radio QSL gallery is getting a lot of visits, as
are items about vintage radio. More coming soon, so check regularly.

The Radio Hauraki 40th anniversary book is finally being
released at the end of October says John Monks, citing changes in
printer, detailed proofing and expanded content as reasons for the
long delay. As a limited edition work, it's well worth waiting for.
Thanks for your patience!

What do we do every day? We protect, collect, store, digitise,
research and publish radio heritage and make it available for free
on-line. We cover the Pacific region, with emphasis at present on New
Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and the islands, Armed Forces Radio
services since WWII and the Art of Radio on-line art exhibitions.
But, we can be doing much more.

You can help us today with your financial support. We need
regular donations via paypal and they can be as low as $5 in your
currency. Donations from New Zealand are tax deductible and details
are at
www.radioheritage.net.

Most importantly, you can use your credit card right now at
Paypal on any page, and your donation is needed to maintain the work
we're doing. If you have any questions about donations, tax
deductions and how you can financially help, email
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'Donation' in the subject line.

Welcome to two new representatives now helping our projects at
the local level. In Adelaide, Trevor Wilkey [presenter of
'Sentimental Journey' on 5MBS and 5EFM] wants to hear from anyone
with radio memorabilia and memories from South Australia. Write to
Trevor at twilkey@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ....... And if you're interested in
becoming a state representative in other Australian states, please
send an email to info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'Representative' in the
subject line.

Meanwhile, Lachlan Munro is helping us in Christchurch [NZ]
where the local city council has again threatened to bulldoze down
the original 3ZB transmitter site. Lachlan is helping co-ordinate a
community based initiative to restore the building and use it for
contemporary radio use. Contact Lachlan at lachlanm@xxxxxxxxxx if you
can help him with this project. And....read all the latest 3ZB issues
at www.radioheritage.net.

Local representatives are also invited from around the
Pacific, wherever you may be located. Send an email to
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'Representative' in the subject line to
find out what's involved. These are all voluntary positions.

This issue of Radio Heritage News is brought to you in
association with our sponsor ProCopy. Mike and his team can handle
all your printing needs at very competitive prices whether you're
located in New Zealand, Australia or around the Pacific. They
specialise in content emailed to them and then printed fast and
delivered globally at very good rates. Mike has a broadcasting
background, so make sure you email mike@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to get more
information and quotes on what he can do for you.

Remember, how is climate change affecting your station? How do
you think radio broadcasters can handle climate change issues? Some
islands may literally have their stations swamped by rising sea
levels. In the big cities, can you answer 'How Green is my station'?
Whether you're a listener, DJ, presenter or anyone involved with
radio around the Asian Pacific region, send your thoughts about how
the future looks to info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We've got a special gift for the writer of the most interesting
comment on the issue and we'll publish comments on-line!
