[HCDX] Tune into 250 new radio stations in India!
The radio channel industry is booming with media
majors like Times of India, Mid-Day, already making
waves. A total of 300 new radio stations are likely to
come up in the future with big corporates like
Hindustan Times, India Today, Sun TV, Malyalam
Manorama, Reliance Adlabs, entering the fray. A total
of 90 cities will be entertained by these radio
stations. There is a huge rush among the students for
courses that will train them to become radio
professionals. Institutions like Xavier's Institute of
Communications and individuals like Roshan Abbas are
conducting these courses.
Well known radio personality, Ameen Sayani, says,
"Each city may soon have 3 or 4 independent FM
stations competing with each other, and the metros
more than 8 each. Let's hope they won't all sound
alike in terms of presentation and song selection and
therefore cancel out each other's listenership and
revenue. They'll need to create dynamically different
programming and style and also taking inputs from
seasoned unaffiliated broadcasters. They'll also have
to contend with All India Radio's Vividh Bharati (AM),
FM Rainbow and FM Gold networks. We'll just have to
wait and see what happens: Engrossing Variety or Inane
chaos".
Khodus Wadia, radio trainer, feels, "Though the
quantum of channels is growing the nature of the
programming seems to be the same. They have to be more
innovative in their programming."
Radio announcer Siraj Syed opines that the most
benefited by this scenario will be the advertisers and
the listeners.
But the listenership and the advertising will be
divided and only a few channels will survive.
There will be no brand leaders. Most of the target
audience is in the 18-30 segment and hence the older
segment too needs to be segmented.
The channels also need to focus on education and not
only entertainment.
Partap Sharma, radio broadcaster and teacher, says,
"The more channels, the merrier. Variety is the spice
of life. Those who enjoy classical music on a channel
can listen to film songs on the other. Also, the
listeners can be informed about traffic jams or rain
flooding.?
He added, ?The education too is important with a sense
of fun. Millions of people will be tuned in their
houses or in their cars or outdoors. Their most
private moments will be while listening to the radio.
Most importantly, the audience will have a choice."
So tune in to your favourite station and ENJOY!
