WORLD OF RADIO 1430 SUMMARY [last week]
[for much more detail and full attribution of all items, see recent
issues of DX Listening Digest]
*Standard disclaimer
*What is CODAR, which interferes with SW broadcasts on 4, 5, 12, 13
MHz, really for, radar to study ocean waves? How about detecting
submarines
*Fluttery signal from WEWN on 11560 may have been backscatter from
auroral zone
*QSO with Ted Randall UT Sun 0300-0500 on WBCQ, tried 5110 along with
7415 last week, except 7415 had something else; also UT Sun 0500-0700
on WRMI 9955
*New station in Las Vegas NV, KMZQ 670, 30 kW daytime into Nevada, 600
watts nighttime into Las Vegas; nulls toward Los Angeles, Denver and
Chicago
*NRC AM Log 2008-2009, highly recommended, listing of US & Canadian MW
stations by frequency with cross references; on paper only. Ordering
details: http://www.nrcdxas.org/catalog/books/index1.html
*GALCOM banquet Saturday evening Oct 25 in Hamilton, Ont., by the
suppliers of fix-tuned radios to missionary stations. Open to public
but RSVP was Oct 14; info from banquet@xxxxxxxxxx --- If anyone
attends, please send us a report
*More SNAFUs from Habana: interfering with itself on 13680 at 2250;
2230 Guarani on 17705 partly in Portuguese; Sunday at 0700 on 6000
extended English instead of Esperanto
*Brazilian news: On Oct 7, R. Cultura São Paulo, 9615, had jumped to
9285; probably somewhere else now
*R. Nove de Julho, 9820 is off for adjustments until early November
*R. Cultura de Araraquara reactivated on 3365, but only for silly
ballgame
*R. Globo on 9585 heard with two programs at once
*R. Rio Mar, Manaus, 9695 signs off at 2105
*DST in part of Brasil starts October 19, UT -2 along coastal and
southern states instead of UT -3, affecting SW schedules; naming
other states which stay on UT -4 or UT -3
*RAE and Radio Nacional, Argentina, off the air since late August,
returned October 8 on 15345v and 11710v
*Radio Kahuzi, rare missionary station in Congo DR, reported from
Europe on 6210, but beware: mixing product from Greece also on 6210
starting from 0600 and 1600, 15630 minus 9420, so check for parallels
*The media magazine you monitor with your mind, World of Radio 1430,
more info at http://www.worldofradio.org
*Thanks to Tom McLaughlin, Lubbock TX for financial support in memory
of Gigi Lytle; sent a check in the mail to P O Box 1684, Enid OK
73702
*Africa1, Zambia, 13590 in English to Nigeria at 315 degrees also
carries on to Upper Peninsula of Michigan, accounting for
surprisingly good signal in North America around 1900
*R. Tanzania Zanzibar, reactivated on 11735, including news in English
at 1800, or sometimes, such as on a Thursday, at 2000
*Reflections Europe, pirate in Ireland, heard in Florida at 2059-2210
on 6295, but not 12255
*Radio Netherlands resumes Arabic service in B-08, from Oct 27, M-F
[shouldn`t that be Sat-Wed?] 1900 on 11830 via South Africa, 2000 on
7385 via Vatican, 2200 on 5970 via France; tentative schedule
*RN also will start English via DW Sri Lanka MW 1548 at 2300 UT = 4:30
am in India, when they would rather broadcast English than in prime
time to North America
*On the contrary, Deutsche Welle plans to reduce German broadcasts in
favor of English to reach a winder audience; DW employees object
*DW B-08 English via Rwanda at 21 replaces 15205 and 11865 which were
also very good for NAm, with 11690 which has RTTY; at 19 and 20 on
9735, but not for W Africa; 0400-0530 on 6180 and VOA will vacate
*Home service relays direct from Croatia in B-08 24 hours including
3985v at 2158-0557, claiming 100 kW like 6165 and 9830; but monitored
in Europe, 3985 seems much less, 10 or even 1 kW
*BH Radio 1, Bosnia & Herzegovina on MW 612 has English program
Sundays at 1730, World Chart Show
*Romania has replaced the Saftica transmitter used only for E
European languages, much better reception now, such as Serbian 1930
on 6130
*Yemen Radio heard in Florida on 6005 for a few minutes before closing
in Arabic at 2200, over BBC
*Myanmar Defence Forces station, Taunggyi, 5770, signing off early at
1431 instead of 1530; Myanma Radio, 9730.77 also heard closing in
English at 1510
*Special broadcasts from Sichuan following the quake have finally
ended, freeing 9740 and 13840 for BBC and RNZI
*Clandestines from South to North Korea, Echo of Hope and Voice of the
People have both added new broadcasts at 2200-2400 on same
frequencies as their others
*Hmong Lao Radio, 11785 via WHRI, was missing on Saturday, still heard
on Sunday at 1300-1400
*WHRI not on 11785 weekdays; and V. of Indonesia, 11786, was coming in
better in English at 1300 on Oct 13 and 14 [but from Oct 15 moved
back to 9526, much improved]
*R. Australia`s replacement for Australian Express is The Australian
Bite, another magazine show, Tuesdays at 1330, and perhaps also
Sundays until 1230, [rather than from 1230] via CKZU 6160
*Visit the Virtual Museum of Radio Communications, for vintage utility
clips of voice markers, QSLs, http://www.utilityradio.com
*Oct. 20-24 is solar week; see http://www.solarweek.org
*Trans-equatorial FM DX season is underway from Caribbean to southern
Brasil, such as Antigua, Guadeloupe, St Vincent, Trinidad, Barbados
*Propagation outlook from Boulder, October 14
