[HCDX] Grayland DXpedition Loggings for November 1, 2008
Here's the loggings from the first night of DXing at Grayland this past weekend. There may be a few stragglers as I review the Perseus WAV files further; I still need to go over the 1500 and 1600 UTC top-of-hour recordings. Also, I see that I didn't note any DX on 675 kHz, so I'll need to review once more to make sure I didn't miss Voice of Vietnam commonly heard on 675.
There are many top of the hour loggings here, because the recorded files of the SDR are highly useful for checking frequencies at TOH for IDs, parallel content, etc.
I'll be going over my November 2nd Perseus recordings soon, and reporting in with any new catches not heard the previous night.

549 RUSSIA R. Mayak, Nov 1 0900 - Moscow Nights interval signal followed by 5+1 time pips and woman announcer in Russian. Parallel 576. Presumed Khabarovsk location. Poor to fair. (Atkins-WA)
558 SOUTH KOREA HLQH KBS2 Yeong-Il, Nov 1 1200 - Man and woman in Korean; simple piano tune at 1000. Mentions of 'Radio-imnida'. Good level. (Atkins-WA)
567 JAPAN JOIK Sapporo, Nov 1 0729 - Nice acoustic guitar music to 0720 Japanese announcers, parallel to 594. Good signal. (Atkins-WA)
576 RUSSIA R. Mayak, Nov 1 0640 - Lively talk in Russian by man and two women. Quite strong on peaks. Faded to nothingness by 0655, but back up with heavy rock music 0659 and into 'Moscow Nights' interval signal 0700, and then 5+1 time pips. Presumed Khabarovsk location. (Atkins-WA)

603 SOUTH KOREA HLSA KBS2 Namyang, Nov 1 0930 - Man and woman announcers in Korean; good signal. (Atkins-WA)
648 RUSSIA Voice of Russia, Nov 1 1000 - Deep-toned bells or vibraharp at 1000, followed by announcements in Korean. Tentative; PAL shows VOR in Korean here, but not in this language until 1200. Good signal. (Atkins-WA)
648 RUSSIA VOR, Nov 1 1400 - Poundingly loud signal of gong tones, male and female Chinese announcers (not Korean as listed in PAL), and Web address spelled out as 'www.vor.ru' and repeated. (Atkins-WA)
666 JAPAN JOBK Osaka, Nov 1 1200 - Excitable announcer in Japanese with sporting event coverage and 'crowd goes wild' in background. 3+1 time pips over announcer at 1200. Parallel to 594. Very good signal. (Atkins-WA)
693 JAPAN JOAB Tokyo, Nov 1 1200 - 3+1 time pips at 1200 and woman announcer in Japanese, parallel to 774. Good signal. (Atkins-WA)
702 JAPAN JOFB / JOKD, Nov 1 0700 - Japanese NHK2 synchros with 3+1 time pips at 0700, parallel 774. Poor to fair signal. (Atkins-WA)
711 SOUTH KOREA HLKA Sorae, Nov 1 1400 - 3+1 time pips, male announcer in Korean. Good in spite of KIRO 710 splatter. (Atkins-WA)
720 RUSSIA Voice of Russia / R. Mayak, Nov 1 1000 - Sign-on at 1000 with VOR interval signal, followed by female announcer in Russian. Strong signal, and nearly dominating 720 kHz. Two other signals heard beneath VOR: one unidentified, but another with ID as 'KDWN, Las Vegas...a broadcast station...where Nevada tunes for breaking news, traffic, and weather 24/7'. (Atkins-WA)
729 CHINA Jiangxi RGD, Nov 1 1200 - A mess of overlapping time pips at 1200 due to multiple transmitters on the frequency. The strongest signal was a presumed Jiangxi with a loud signal in Chinese; man and woman announcer and ad string. (Atkins-WA)
738 CHINA Jilin RGD, Nov 1 0930 - Presumed, with very strong signal. Man and woman in Chinese with advertisement or announcement. (Atkins-WA)
747 JAPAN JOIB Sapporo, Nov 1 0700 - 3+1 time pips at 0700 and into presumed news by male announcer in Japanese. Parallel to 774. Good level. (Atkins-WA)
765 RUSSIA R. Vostok Rossii, Nov 1 1000 - Sound effects past 1000; announcer in Russian at 1000:30. Telephone link with reporter at 1001, and various news items. Good signal. (Atkins-WA)
774 JAPAN JOUB Akita, Nov 1 0648 - An early evening powerhouse, simply booming in with amusing radio drama or folk story. Lots of sound effects and exclamations in Japanese. (Atkins-WA)
819 NORTH KOREA KCBS, Nov 1 1000 - 3+1 time pips at 1000, and woman announcer in Korean. Fair to good level, and parallel to 873. (Atkins-WA)
828 JAPAN JOBB Osaka, Nov 1 0733 - Two men with discussion or interview in Japanese, parallel to 774. Fair to good level. (Atkins-WA)
837 JOQK Niigata, Nov 1 0800 - 3+1 time pips at 0800, and into talk by man in Japanese. Parallel to 594. Fair. (Atkins-WA)
846 JAPAN Unid. NHK1, Nov 1 0800 - 3+1 time pips and into Japanese talk, parallel to 594. JOCP Koriyama most likely, as the strongest Japanese station (5 Kw) on this frequency. Poor level. (Atkins-WA)
873 JAPAN JOGB Kumamoto, Nov 1 1200 - 3+1 time pips and Japanese man and woman at 1200. Good signal and parallel to 774. North Korean KCBS heard in background. (Atkins-WA)
873 NORTH KOREA KCBS, Nov 1 1000 - 3+1 time pips at 1000, followed by female Korean announcer. Very good, and parallel to 819. (Atkins-WA)
909 JAPAN JOCB Nagoya, Nov 1 1200 - Another NHK2 station, heard parallel to 774 with 3+1 time pips and Japanese announcers at 1200. Good level, but mixing with another Japanese station (STV network listed). (Atkins-WA)
918 CHINA Shandong News Channel, Jinan, Nov 1 1000 - Man in Chinese to 1000 ID 'Shandong...News Radio', then 5+1 time pips; trumpet music and then ID again. Echoes from multiple transmitters made listening tough, despite good signal strength. I noted a VERY faint 3+1 time pips sequence from another station a full 11 seconds before Shandong's TPs; possibly one of the 1 or 5 Kw Japanese stations listed for 918. (Atkins-WA)
930 USA KTKN Ketchikan, Nov 1 0250 - 'AM 930 KTKN' ID at 0250 and 0251. Ads for a bank and a RV dealer. Excellent signal. (Atkins-WA)
945 CHINA CNR1, Nov 1 0800 - 4+1 time pips, followed by Chinese language man and woman announcers. Heard partial Guangbo Dientai ID at 0800:15. Poor level. (Atkins-WA)
963 CHINA CRI, Nov 1 1000 - Russian language program with interval signal at 1000, and IDs in Chinese and Russian. Fair to good. (Atkins-WA)
981 CHINA CNR1, Nov 1 1000 - At 1000, noted 5+1 time pips, followed by announcements in Chinese by man and woman. Good level. (Atkins-WA)
1008 RUSSIA R. Yunost, Khabarovsk, Nov 1 0551 - Heavy techno music and occasional announcers in European sounding lang. while at fair level 0605. Still going strong at 0635. Music was more pop-oriented from 0645, slowly growing stronger, and Russian language from female announcer became apparent. Back to heavy-beat techno at 0655. (Atkins-WA)
1026 CHINA Beijing Jingji GD, Nov 1 1000 - Usual 5+1 time pips, followed by 'Beijing Jingji Guangbo Dientai' by man in Chinese. Another mention of Beijing followed a few seconds later, and then a woman in British accented (!) English with 'Beijing Public Service Radio, 107.3 FM, 1026 AM' (matches entry in WRTH). A slightly out-of-sync transmitter noted in weakly in background during English language portion. Good level. (Atkins-WA)
1035 CHINA CNR1, Nov 1 1200 - Unknown location, with 5+1 time pips, CNR orchestral flourish, and Chinese announcer. No better than fair level, and exception on this evening where nearly every 9 kHz channel has good or better audio. (Atkins-WA)
1044 CHINA CRI, Nov 1 1100 - Male announcer in Chinese with 'Zhongguo guaji guangbo diantai' ID, as heard by Bruce Portzer at Grayland in 2003. Followed by woman in Japanese with presumed ID, then more Japanese talk (JJ per schedule in PAL). Very good signal. (Atkins-WA)
1044 NORTH KOREA HLCD / HLCI KCBS, Nov 1 1000 - 3+1 time pips, and into male announcer in Korean. Poor signal. (Atkins-WA)
1098 MARSHALL ISLANDS V7AB Majuro, Nov 1 0934 - Female announcer in pres. Marshallese; mixing with Family Radio, Taiwan at 0942. After a slow fade, Marshalls returned at 1002 with presumed news items read by a male announcer. (Atkins-WA)
1134 JAPAN JOQR Tokyo, Nov 1 0659 - Man and woman announcers in Japanese to amusing exclamation 'RADIO!' just before 0700 time pip. Brief piano music, then into Japanese talk. Fair. (Atkins-WA)
1188 JAPAN JOKP Kitami, Nov 1 0615 - Like 1287 JOHR Sapporo, this northern Japan station in Kitami is fading in well before their local sunset. Fair to good level with Japanese talk by man and woman. (Atkins-WA)

1197 JAPAN Unid., Nov 1 0700 - Weak Japanese language signal barely above the noise. Single tone noted at top of the hour, and back to Japanese talk. Many weak JJ stations noted in PAL here. (Atkins-WA)
1197 JAPAN JOWL Asahikawa, Nov 1 1200 - Sporting event coverage in Japanese, in parallel with 1197, 1278 and 1440. Fair to good level. (Atkins-WA)
1206 CHINA Yanbian RGD, Nov 1 0740 - Mellow piano music and male & female voiceover in Korean. Program seemed to be a listener call-in or counseling program, with the soothing music repeated every so often. The signal rose from fair to amazingly strong in less than a minute...very impressive rise in strength. (Atkins-WA)
1215 CHINA CNR7, Nov 1 1200 - Presumed this Chinese outlet; possible mention of '...Huaxia zhi Sheng'. Chinese announcers and orchestral fanfares. Good signal. (Atkins-WA)
1242 JAPAN JOLF Tokyo, Nov 1 0700 - Weak signal with time pips 0700 and Japanese talk. Far stronger at 0730. (Atkins-WA)
1251 CHINA VOR, Nov 1 1400 - Loud gong tones parallel to 648, Chinese language announcers, flute music. Fair level in splash. (Atkins-WA)
1260 JAPAN JOIR TBC - Sendai, Nov 1 1200 - Noted weakly with sports event coverage in Japanese, beneath a stronger Edmonton, Alberta station IDing as 'This is Edmonton's sports radio, C-Drum 60'. JOIR was briefly at equal level with the Edmonton station at 1202. (Atkins-WA)
1287 JAPAN JOHR Sapporo, Nov 1 0545 - Already at a good level at tune-in, approx. 1-1/2 hours before Sapporo sunset. Fast talking male and female announcers in Japanese, and easy-listening music. Ten minutes later, the signal was down to fair, but at 0615 recheck it was back to very good levels with dramatic choral music in Japanese. (Atkins-WA)
1323 CHINA CRI, Nov 1 1200 - CRI Russian service with trumpet fanfare, and IDs in Russian and Chinese by man and woman. Excellent signal. (Atkins-WA)

1575 THAILAND VOA Ban Phachi, Nov 1 1646 - Program in Bangla per PAL up to 1659 ID 'This is Washington signing off, for the Voice of America' by male. Yankee Doodle anthem to 1700, then sign-off. Fair to good level on peaks, more than two hours past local sunrise. Noted earlier at 1100 with excellent signal in English. (Atkins-WA)
