It's Full Speed Ahead for Sener and Main.net in Finland
( BW)(SENER/MAIN.NET)
   Business Editors
   HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2001--Main.net are
conducting a pilot project for the transfer of high-speed Internet over the
power line with the Finnish Electricity Association, SENER. This pilot
project is a part of the PLC project of Sener and it's 24 member power
utilities. Having been appointed Sener's partner in the evaluation of
the implementation of Power Line Communication Services (PLC) in the
Finnish market, Main.net is conducting the first successful PLC pilot
project in Finland. The pilot project is implemented with the electricity
company Vantaan Energia that is located in Vantaa in north of Helsinki.
Sener's aim is to bring high-speed communication via the power line
supplying services such as Internet and telephony into the Finnish market.
After examining the technology of several PLC manufacturers, Sener chose
Main.net as a partner for this project. The pilot is being conducted on
the grid of Vantaan Energia, where end users are connected to the broadband
Internet services using Main.net's PLUS power line technology. In this
environment, the end users are situated in both apartment blocks and
private houses. Throughout the installation period, Vantaan Energia has
been very pleased with the "plug & play" type of installation required by
the PLUS units, making the installation fast and simple. In addition,
the end users who are taking part in this experiment are enjoying the
high-speed and quality of the PLC connection through which they are able to
surf. Customers are also amazed at the fact that they are receiving these
services simply by "plugging in". "I'm convinced that PLC would be
greatly welcomed by the Finnish public," said Elina Koivusalo, Network
Engineer in charge of Sener's PLC project. "PLC will give us an opportunity
to receive broadband communication via the power line without the need for
additional wiring in the home. "Also, the utility members of Sener have
relayed that they are excited about the new possibility of using their
existing power infrastructure to provide communication services to their
customers."
The Finnish Electricity Association Sener represents the distributors
and retailers in Finland. The association was founded in the year 1926 and
has nearly 100 member companies who account for 70% of the regional and
local distribution of electricity. This first successful trial in Helsinki
is seen as an achievement for Main.net and Sener owing to the fact that
this is the first successful pilot project ever conducted for PLC in
Finland. In addition, the openness to new forms of communication that exist
within the Finnish society is a very encouraging factor for both Sener and
Main.net.
Main.net's PLUS system enables power utilities to capitalize on their
existing power infrastructure by offering communications services such as
telephony and high-speed internet to their customers. In addition to
supplying the PLUS system commercially in Germany, Main.net is currently
conducting pilot projects in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, and America,
with a number of additional pilots planned in Europe, the Far East and
South America. Main.net has two joint venture companies. One is Power
PLUS Communications AG (PPC), a joint venture between Main.net and MVV, a
leading German power utility, created with the mission of marketing and
implementing PLUS into the German market.
The second company is Powerline Technologies Inc. (PTI), in Reston,
Virginia. a joint venture that was established in the year 2000 between
Main.net and PowerTrust, an Internet-based energy company. PTI's aim is to
adapt, sell and support the PLUS product line in North America.
