[DX] KBGN AM 1060 heard in Finland

Dear Jim,

Thank you for your correspondence about your reception of our radio signal in Finland. In October of 2004 I received correspondence from two other gentlemen who had received our station while listening in Lemmenjoki. While your recording was made while we were broadcasting at nearly 10,000 watts, it is interesting that their audio, received while we were transmitting with about 60 watts, was clearer than yours. Upon listening to the audio sample it was evident that you did, indeed, hear KBGN. I was able to get only a small improvement in the audio by filtering the strong heterodyne whistles near 1000 and 2000 hertz.

The following is an excerpt from the December 3, 2008 program log of our automated broadcast system, verifying that we did air the station identification announcement heard on the audio sample which you sent:

Thanks for including the beautiful photographs. The lovely "northern lights" are one of my fond recollections from my youth in the state of Minnesota. I have witnessed them only two or three times here in Idaho and with much less awe than in Minnesota. I was raised in the far North of Minnesota amongst many people of Finnish descent. Some of my siblings married spouses of Finnish blood who have retained some of the language because it was so commonly spoken by their parents. I was only a young boy when my folks bought a farm from an elderly Finnish immigrant lady who used to treat us with tasty Finnish cheese which she would make to sell to a store in a nearby town. The homestead had a log farmhouse and some outbuildings built with a unique style and skill that had been brought over from "the old country". In the community there are several such structures which have been marked for historical preservation. Because of the Finnish influence, our track and field team in Embarrass, Minnesota was called the "Flying Finns". While I am well acquainted with cold weather (Embarrass is frequently the coldest town in the "Lower 48 States"), I have no desire to take the icy plunge shown in your photos. I once took a dive into the snow after getting totally steamed on the top seat of our sauna bath; not an experience which I wish to repeat. When I was growing up, we had only the sauna bath for washing up and an out house for other matters of hygiene.

KBGN is a station which has broadcast Christian programs and music since 1960. I came to work here in 1974, over the years serving in management and engineering capacities and eventually acquiring the station in 1989. My four children have all been staff members.

Have a Merry Christmas and a good year in 2009!
