** U S A. 1280, Dec 30 at 0704 UT, DX test from WNAM Neenah/Menasha WI
is detectable direct vs QRM from lots of other stations, sweeps upward
and in between Morse code including ID as WNAM.

To know what to listen for, I had tuned to the first hourly
transmission at 0604 via N8BTR remote at Tall Pines Cabin in NE
Wisconsin. From tune-in at 0555, heavy QRM in French, from CFMB
Montreal, 50/50 kW but supposed to have a notch to the west. Would not
be the first Canadian failing to implement required direxionality.
WNAM is generally underneath it.

The DX material is to air at :03-:05 past each hour from 0600 to 1105
UT Dec 30 and 31. Started with phone-off-the-hook tones, sweeps
upward, Morse code, more sweeps, gmail address, singing ID. 0606
``continue to tune in as we honor our final days on the air``. Of
course, DXers are on their honor to pick it up direct and/or specify
if via a remote, and not fake a report from what others have heard.

** U S A. 780, Dec 29 at 0740 UT, ``NewsRadio 105.9 WBBM`` via
WBBM[AM] blows right past `StarDate` time, after ``traffic and weather
toge[a]ther on the eights``.

Guess what, when listened to `StarDate` later on another station,
there is a huge error in the Dec 29 episode; from script on website:
``Over the centuries, we’ve given all the visible stars many names –
proper names, catalog designations, and others. But only one star is
best known not by any of its formal names, but by its nickname: the
Dog Star. Its proper name is Sirius, and it’s the leading light of the
constellation Canis Major, the big dog – hence the nickname...`` ---
but Billy says URSA!! MAJOR as I heard him myself. Notified them
immediately. Did WBBM skip this ep because of that gross error? I
doubt it.

Guess2 what, the real WBBM-FM is on 96.3 with ``Rythmic CHR`` format,
but only 3.3 kW ERP. 105.9 is really a totally different station,
WCFS-FM, a hefty 4.1 kW ``in`` Elmwood Park. Axually, per WTFDA FM DB,
both are transmitting from exactly the same coördinates, the Willis
ex-Sears Tower, in The Loop, never mind Elmwood Park. 105.9 mounted 8
meters higher on the tower at 482 m HAAT vs only 474 for 96.3. Without
the antennas, Willis is only 1451 feet = 442.3 meters above ground.
482m = 1581 feet above average terrain, which must be pretty flat in
Chicago.

780, originally U1 50/50 kW, was degraded some years ago to only U1
35/42 kW -- yes, increased power at night, due to a site change,
consolidating with another AM station: ``the station's transmitter —
diplexed with sister station WSCR [670] — is in the nearby suburb of
Bloomingdale`` in DuPage County, 25 miles NW of downtown Chicago --
but not good enough, with a CP now for U1 43/43 kW, so they won`t even
have to bother with any SR/SS changes. Elmwood Park is the first
suburb WNW of The Loop, pop about 25K. Reception here varies widely
from VG to VP depending on auroral conditions and whether daytimer
KSPI Stillwater OK still be on air.

Other 780s rarely heard here; Allan Weiner does his best to keep WBBM
out of Maine. But beware of WJAG Norfolk NE, L1 1000, on air from
Chicago SR to Chicago SS, branded as ``NewsTalk 780 & 105.9``, in this
case really a translator K290AT! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1360, UT Mon Dec 29 at 0640 UT, I check a remote within
local S9+35 range of KHNC Johnstown CO, a week after my unID with
pseudo-scientific stuff - i.e. the K0LTO one at Little Thompson
Observatory, Berthoud CO. Indeed it`s a discussion of flat-earthers,
etc., certainly type of programming chex. 0700 no ID break, but on to
``episode 10, it`s time to talk about energy`` - Tesla. 0703
interrupted for ID and commercial plugging website, podcast. Std.
disclaimer. And 0705 resumes with - yecch - Alex Jones instead. Online
program sked is incomplete, not showing this.

Strangely, another remote nearby at Fort Collins gets nothing on 1360
or close frequencies but is sending/picking up a slow Morse code

virtually the OSOB, so I wonder what it could be? Aoki & EiBi show CRI

WRMI: is it propagating to anywhere in the middle of a winter night?

** SPAIN. 9690, Sunday Dec 28 at 1550, zero signal direct from REE to
N America. Weekends starts at 1500; even 17755 for Africa, normally
the weakest, is S7/S8 much better than 9690! 17715 for SAm S6/S9;
12030 for ME S9+15/20. To restate the obvious, NAm in our mornings
should be on much higher frequency, 13, 15 or even 17 MHz, while 9690
becomes VG later over mostly dark path. Something`s not right at
Noblejas, or messed up in Madrid when it comes to Propagation 101. At
1615 into UTwente I confirm that 9690 indeed is on the air, S9/+15 to

pronounced long/short path echo, virtually equal levels. It`s 500 kW,
215 degrees from Beijing site, so directly off the back = 35 degrees
USward. Short-path distance is 10834 km. Taking trans-equatorial
Earthly circumference as 40050 km, i.e. long path would be 29216 km.
Minus SP 10834 = 18382 km longer. Divide by speed of radio as 299,792
km/sec, delay = 0.06 second, or roughly 1/16 of a second. Of course
distances are measured at ground level and ionospheric propagation
takes a little longer as it totals a little further, but ratios should

least on my E/W wire, but ought to be mutually nullable at
near-right-angles; fortunately 50/50 kW XET Monterrey goes
direxional-south at night. It`s U4 10000/450 watts but sure sounds
like day power now. U4 means direxional day and night with different
patterns. Night pattern is broad oval NW/SE, while day pattern has a
major lobe to the west. Hard to tell whether site cross be in TN or

I`m not hearing much from my closest 1320, KCLI CLInton OK, U1
1000/108 watts, perpetually off-frequency-minus, not even its het at
night. At 1838 UT Dec 27 I do detect a JBA carrier about 1319.96.
MWoffsets shows KCLI at 1319.9615 as of 2018-01-23 - plus ça change!
And KLWN on 1319.9947 as of same date (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
