heard while in my car, and for the official sign-off and last song....Keep

Official log of HCJB's MW test:
690 ECUADOR, HCJB-1, 0600, mostly in the mush, with no "test" programming
getting through. Had to null-out two domestics and Radio Reloj via
Progreso (Progreso went off at 0600, then the freq relayed Reloj),
using my ANC-4, before any CW could get through. I immediately
emailed a report to McVicar, who has just told me (1910 UTC) what I
heard was the test, and that an actual QSL is now in the mail to me.
Happy with this, this was my last night off from work for any of the

Guy Atkins, Bonney Lake, WA. DXing at Midway Beach, WA with the AR7030 using
800-1000 ft. unterminated Beverages at 225, 240, 270, and 310 degrees.
1620 AUSTRALIA, 0940-1132, 2AM Sydney NSW. Scraps of EG audio on May 26th
noted at 0940 with a hyper announcer, but very weak signal. Reception
characterized by long, deep fades typical of trans-Pacific MW DX, and
best heard on 225 degree antenna (Australia). Frequent music
selections, all very upbeat with driving rhythms; they were quite
exotic tunes but I couldn't place the style or region. The language
was definitely not EG after 1030 and seemed Eastern European; I was
quite puzzled with the lang. and music style until 1115 when there
were a number of clear mentions of "Macedonia". I was apparently
hearing a Greek language music program for an ethnic community.
Signal improving to fair at 1120 with more pounding bouzoukis worthy
of an Athens nightclub. If an ID was given at any time, well, it was
all Greek to me! The signal finally subsided and gave way to a 2x 810
harmonic of KGO San Francisco at 1132. Thanks to Michael Rolph of
Australia who called 2AM's QSL manager (John Wright) for me and
confirmed that 2AM was indeed running Greek programming at this time.
Michael indicated that 2AM IDs as "R. Omega" on their Greek program,
but it clearly slipped by me. Power is reported to be 200 watts, but
may have been bumped up by now to 400 watts. This is 2AM's 2nd
logging in North America, the first one made by Patrick Martin, OR.

DXPEDITION COMMENTS ON THE AR7030: This receiver proved itself a worthy
DXpedition radio: compact, versatile & selective, and with QUIET circuitry!
The low noise level of the AR7030 is startling; when used in a quiet setting
with a good antenna you get the impression there is NOTHING between the
signal, the atmospheric noise level, and your ears. The AR7030 seems nearly
"transparent" as it goes about its business.
Terry Palmersheim was with me for the first night of DXing, using a stock
NRD-525. The difference in the audio quality (and resulting intelligibility)
was large. Also noticeable are the very small tuning steps (2.7 Hz) compared
to the 10 Hz divisions in the '525; the AR7030 sounded like an analog
receiver when tuning ECSS. Terry quickly became a fan of the AR7030, and
plans to order one soon.
In July I will be able to compare a R8A to the AR7030 in a DXpedition
setting; I'm sure *that* radio will be more competition for the AOR!
I found no signs of spurious signals or overloading with the AR7030, even
with powerhouse Seattle/Tacoma MW locals off the backside of the Beverage
antennas. Frequent excursions through the longwave region, VLF, and 2-3 MHz
showed no problems. I left the antennas unterminated to provide a good test
for the receiver, since at the Midway Beach DX location all strong MW locals
are to the east and northeast.
The synchronous detector continues to impress. It is definitely useful for
DXing, and I'm finding less need to remain tuned in ECSS after the initial
discovery of a signal by listening for the het when tuning in USB or LSB. I
still have not found a case in which the synchronous detector loses "lock".
The radio performed admirably on mediumwave splits. Selectivity for
trans-Pacific DX catches was very good on this difficult band; unavoidable
splatter from locals was the main hindrance to weak foreign MW reception
(other than the lackluster "out of season" MW propagation). Catches included
Australians 2MC mixing with 4KZ (531), A3Z Tonga (1017), and Kiribati T3K1
(846). For two evenings of MW DXing at the coast, this is really sparse! A
good MW propagation night can yield dozens of Aussies and/or Japanese
stations as pests getting in the way of more desireable DX. However, these
were enough to show that the AR7030 is a good performer on mediumwave.
On the AR7030, I've noticed that cycling through the AGC settings does NOT
blast the ears with a burst of audio when going past AGC OFF. Only if you
linger longer than 1-1/2 to 2 seconds does this happen. This is a nice touch
since all other receivers I've encountered give a near-immediate blast of
volume in the OFF setting. The characteristic of the AR7030 allows a moment
to begin backing off the gain if you are intentionally stopping at OFF for
weak-signal DXing.
John Thorpe of AOR has said that in lab tests the receiver loses only a few
dB of 3rd Order Intercept Point performance at 12 volts DC compared to 15
volts DC (recommended voltage). I was curious to see if there were any
effects noticeable in a DXpedition setting, so I did some comparisons
between DXing performance at 15 volts and 12.5 volts. The effects were
subtle, but real: an decrease in opposite sideband rejection and an increase
in digital switching noise at 12.5 volts power.
I found that when tuning in USB and approaching a signal from below, a low
volume rising pitch is heard for about 1.5-2 kHz above (past) the center
frequency. This effect is reduced 75-100% with 15 volts power! I believe
this crude test illustrates a degradation in the opposite sideband rejection
at 12.5 volts. It was interesting to note that Terry's NFD-525 was much
worse in opposite sideband rejection at its normal 12 volts nominal power.
At the 12.5 volts level, I found a slight to moderate increase in digital
switching noises, pops, and low buzzes when pushing various buttons . These
were all at very low audio levels, but noticeable with careful listening.
These noises are virtually absent at 15 volts, except for the brief "pops"
when filter or attenuation settings are changed (these are louder and occur
irregardless of the DC power). Note that these artifacts are only heard
during the actual brief moment that the button makes contact when pressed.
In the future I plan to run my AR7030 off 15 volts exclusively, for any
serious DXing at home or while on DXpedition.
In a lab setting, Craig Siegenthaler of Kiwa Electronics measured my
receiver at +34dbm for the 3rd Order Intercept Point, at 12 MHz (the AOR
specified test frequency). However, the IP3 drops as the receiver is tuned
down toward the lower reaches of the HF spectrum. Craig is corresponding
with John Thorpe, the AR7030's designer, about measurement techniques and
results on different serial numbers of receivers.
Craig also discovered that the reciprocal mixing figures (related to the low
noise level of the receiver) are even lower than the AR7030 specifications
by a good margin. I believe Craig stated a figure of -158dbc at 100 kHz.
This is an excellent number.
In all, the DXpedition experience with this radio was a very good one. It's
definitely a keeper.

Dear Radio Enthusiast,
Kiwa Electronics has just released a new line of Premium Filter Modules.
These 455 kHz Filter Modules provide performance and bandwidths previously
unobtainable in any other design. They are designed to provide selectivity
enhancement to any receiver with a 455 kHz IF.
The new Premium Filter Modules have excellent specifications. The -60 dB to
-6 dB Bandwidth Shape Factor is guaranteed to be 1.80 to 1.0 or less.
They typically measure 1.55 to 1.65 to 1.0. Insertion loss is a nominal 6
dB. Input and Output impedance is 1.5 k to 2.0 k ohm.
Probably the most spectacular specification is the ultimate Rejection or
Ultimate Selectivity as it also called. The very best ceramic Filters
typically provide 80-85 dB of ultimate rejection. Many Collins mechanical
filters provide 80-90 dB of ultimate rejection. The new Kiwa Premium Filter
Modules provide typically 105 to 108 dB of Ultimate Rejection. We plan to
guarantee the Ultimate Rejection to be 100 dB or more. This is a
significant improvement over other filter designs.
The Premium Filter Module is an active Filter with a proprietary design.
Special care was taken to insure that the Filter Module does not add any
extra noise to the receiver. It has been thoroughly tested in the new
AR7030 receiver which happens to have an extremely low IF level. Any noise
from the Filter Module would be easily detected in a receiver like the 7030.
Measurements show that the new Premium Filter Module does not add any
measurable noise to the receiver. The Noise Figure of the 7030 (Preamp ON)
typically measures 10.0 dB. The Noise Figure with the Filter Module
installed measures 10.0 dB. The new Premium Filter Module would also
provide excellent performance in the Lowe receivers like the HF-150 and
225E. It also would perform well in the JRC-535.
Each Premium Filter Module requires a DC voltage any where from 4.5 VDC to
15 VDC. Current requirement is less than 2 ma. The same voltage that
supplies power to the IF board within the receiver can also power the
Premium Filter Module.
Bandwidths will depend on the filters in stock. At present we can supply
the following bandwidths. Other bandwidths will soon be available.

2.5 to 2.7 kHz
3.1 to 3.3 kHz
3.7 to 3.9 kHz
4.0 to 4.3 kHz
4.4 to 4.7 kHz
7.3 to 7.7 kHz
Each Premium Filter Module is housed in a soldered tight metal enclosure
measuring 1.75 in (45 mm) x 1.25 in (32 mm) x 0.75 in (19 mm). Input and
output leads use miniature 50 ohm coax.
The easiest way to use the Premium Filter Module is to remove an existing
filter from the printed circuit board. The input and output coax leads of
the Filter Module are soldered to the appropriate input and output solder
pads. Each Filter Module has a red and black power lead that would attach
to a DC location on the printed circuit board. The Filter Module is secured
to the chassis by self-adhesive velcro which we supply.
