Tired of freezing in Lapland, Scotland or Newfoundland? Give a try to MW
dxing in Canary Islands. The only difficult thing there is to find an
accomodation without terrible manmade noises (avoid resorts and big
hotels). Don't care about antennas, a random wire will work. Low value
dxing? Maybe, still it's not bad to hear 4-5.000 km.away stations as
locals, from 20,00 UTC till 09,30 with a warm sun well over the horizon.
Try to find a place on the west coast of any island and your results will
dramatically increase, as mountains and volcanos are excellent shields for
European interferences.

The following stations were heard between 29 Dec and 4 Jan in Gomera Island
(BTW a wonderful place to stay) in four different locations. The best place
was by far the last one, three days in a small village on the west coast. I
had with me a AR7030 and a 20mt wire, but 90% of the stations were audible
also with the small Sony 7600 put in the right side of my bedroom... No
tape recorder, just me, 3-4 hours a night and a thousand of IDs lost, I
guess. After all, it was a holiday.

REMARKS AND UNID HELP WANTED

Despite the latitude, NA propagation was dominant, as all over Europe in
this period. No Praires or West Coast, maybe I should have tried later in
the night. Sooner or later we'll catch a real K-something below the Alps, I
have been up to that for the past 20 years and I'm getting old :-)
I was impressed by the two NY SS stations on 1280&1380, which are very
difficult to catch in Southern Europe. Any information on their antenna
paths?
Brazil is strong at local sunset time (or even before), then surprisingly
tends to fade out. Keep in mind that 25 mt. Brazilians are heard all day
long, here... Puerto Rico is impressive at local sunset, too. No surprise
from Venezuela or Caribbean reception. Mexico in the morning should be
quite regular in this period.

I have a curious ID at 22.20 on 1360. It sounded like Radio Calidad, Viva
la Radio and I would say it was not from South America. Florida??

Another mystery is a Radio Cinco ID on 1430 at 09.15. It was not Spain,of course

I have no information on a Radio Libertad RCN hrd on 1360 at 23.30.
Colombia from where?

As for Africa I did not put a list here, because I had no surprises. The
only interesting signal was an UNID on 1222 at 19.00 both in French and
Vernacular. Senegal? No // with 765

Bye everybody and happy 1997
