CW1 Radio Colonia, 550 and BBC:
On last Sept. 11, BBC signed a 3-year contract with CW1 Radio Colonia,
Colonia, by which they are renting a 3 hour airtime block with news contents
in SP. This news service is aired from 1700-2000, Mon-Fri. There is also
another BBC news service sked at the local morning hours. This material is
sourced by the BBC's "Unidad de Retransmisiones para la Region Americas"
("Americas Region Rebroadcasting Unit). It is said that BBC has paid to the
Uruguayan stn an amount of about 100.000 USD for this contract. In addition,
Radio Colonia which is now operating with 10 KW will increase its power to
25 KW. Radio Colonia has been a very important station from a geopolitical
point of view. It is located in the Uruguayan territory but in front of
Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina. It includes a huge amount of
argentinian originated advertising. Its news services have been widely heard
by large audiences in the Gran Buenos Aires area, specially when censorship
to LU stations took place during the many military ruled governments in the
troubled political history of Argentina. Also, its news presenter, Ariel
Delgado, became famous by its personal style of reading the news, which
always included several "red press" items with all its truculency. Delgado's
sentence: "Hay mas noticias para este boletin" became famous in both sides
of the River Plate bassin and is imitated today by other anouncers at the
station. Delgado is retired now from Radio Colonia, but he works for the
cable tv station "Cronica" in Buenos Aires, which carries the same style of
presenting the news and it also uses the same melody tune -a Philip Sousa
march- that has used by Radio Colonia for its newscasts.
In other aspect, BBC is going to update its website from the next coming
week. There will be a new BBC logo to see. They are at www.bbc.co.uk. They
will have a SP news service added soon to its BBC News in this website. Live
prgms from the LAm Svc of the BBC and a selection of recorded prgms can be
found also in the Clarin Digital from Buenos Aires website. Clarin the
important argentinian newspaper is at www.clarin.com (Roberto Belo, BBC via
