The two extra towers WLIB-1190 NY needs for nighttime broadcasting are
up...that isn't to say they are ready to go, but you might hear them
testing after midnight.

WANN 1190 Annapolis is back on the air.

1190 WANN MD, Annapolis. Running a feed from WUST 1120 Washington DC on
1/9 1359-1401. Heard McDonalds ad in Spanish and ID "The
Multi-cultural voice of the nation's capitol. AM 1120 WUST Washington.
AM 1190 WANN Annapolis." This was followed by a separate local ID.
 Carrier cut at 1401.

I phoned the station to see what is going on. According to the station
owner, Mr. M. Blum the station is being sold to "New World Radio." Mr.
Blum revealed that the station is currently on the air with "limited
daytime" to keep its license, which in January is 0730-1400. An
application for night-time operation has been applied for. Mr. Blum
welcomes correct reception reports for which he will verify with a QSL
card. The address is WANN, PO Box 631, Annapolis, MD 21404. No
indication of a call letter change, which might come after the station
sale is finalized.

Due to the big ice storm in the Montreal are the following stations in
Montreal have been disabled.

- 800 CJAD lost it`s towers. They are presently operating from the old
CFMB site on the frequency of 1410 khz. This might last a few
       weeks.
- 940 CBM is without power and is temporarely operating on their FM
frequency of 93.5 MHz. They will probably not be back on for a
few days since Hydro-Quebec doesn`t expect to restore power in
that area for a few days. All other Montreal stations are still
       operating.

 INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Martin Elbe - Wolfsburg, Germany - elbe@xxxxxxxxxxxx

The DXpedition was to northern Denmark, 50 km NW of Aalborg.

Now this year's DX-pedition to Blokhus in northern Jutland (Denmark) is
history. We arrived on 26.12 in the afternoon and left on 6.1.98 around
noon. We, that were czech DXer Karel Honzik and Joachim Stiller and
Martin Elbe from Germany. Alas, this time Finn Krone could not
participate due to private reasons, but we had phone-contact with him
every day.

Blokhus is a famous danish seaside-resort where we had hired a
summer-cottage right behind the dunes, about 250 meters from the North
Sea. The area was extremely quiet, all surrounding cottages were
uninhabitat. It was the third DX-pedition in a row over the new year,
the first one 95/96 was to Hune, about 3 km from Blokhus, the second
one 96/97 was in Blokhus in the same cottage we used now.

Antennas used were mainly longwires of about 150 to 250 meters in
length, main direction was from 290 to 330 degrees (4 antennas), one to
240 degrees.

And to complete the sortiment there was an active antenna (DX-One
professional) and an endfired inverted V of 8m height, receivers used
were three AOR AR7030.

Conditions? On the 27.12 it was very good, with lots of stations from
the Prairie coming in (of course, this was meant as a mediumwave-
DXpedition!) 28.12. was even better and 29.12 was absolutely
breathtaking. In almost 30 years of DXing I hadn't experienced such
conditions! We heard Northamerica around the clock, on every 10 kHz
channel! Wow! A pity that we could monitor 3 frequencies only at a
time, leaving out more than 100 unmonitored :-(

We thought it would never end, but alas, alas, it all came to a sudden
end on the 30.12. On that day we had a very distinct opening towards
Florida when at 0540 UTC something hit us from the sun. All US stations
were wiped out within a minute, after 10 minutes they slowly recovered.
But not back to the old beauty, in the morning the listening period
ended soon with very early fade-outs. Nothing more from the Prairie
then till the end of our DXpedition! What followed was the period of
the long faces, slowly, slowly conditions recovered, we heard this and
that from the Eastcoast, but the spectacular ones were gone. On the 31.
an 1.1. good openings in the night towards Puerto Rico and Central
America in general. On the 4.1. the big guns from the Westcoast, like
CJVB, CFUN, KGA and KOMO returned, and on the 6.1. it was good towards
Eastcoast.

Some interesting remarks: During the first DXpedition we couldn't log
VOWR on 800 at all. Last year it appeared twotimes. This year VOWR was
audible every evening, always the first to fade-in was CBG Gander on
1400 around 1900 UTC, 10 minutes later VOWR showed up. And every
morning VOWR was audible too. And KBRW Barrow, Alaska! Not heard at all
on the first DXpedition, last year we were really excited to log it
twice. And this year? A daily one, audible in the morning, during
daytime, afternoon, evening and night. Almost regarded as a pest! Sic
transit gloria mundi! Same is valid for KXBT. Oh, how I was fighting
with them last year on 1630! This year they came in roaring on their
new 1640 kHz frequency.

On the other hand we didn't hear CHIN Toronto, 1540, at all. That was a
pest during the previous two years. Off the air?

Some interesting results from the antenna-tests: The end-fired inverted
"V" I used performed very well in comparison with the longwires. During
nighttime reception it was my favourite antenna, giving better results
than the longwires. Only during daytime, after 1000 hrs UTC when
everything in gain was needed the longwires outrivalled the Vertical.

On the 29. we tried to log Hawaii, but with no success. I thought it
could be possible on that day, I was chasing a station on 1500 kHz for
more than an hour (expecting KUMU), but it turned out to be "only" CKAY
Duncan, BC.

So, until now no log from Hawaii in Central Europe. The challenge
continues! (At least for us in Central Europe. In northern Finnland
that's a job for housewives with a kitchen radio :-)

The best log? Difficult to say, most likely the Dallas Airport Station
on 1680 is the best. But a lot of stations logged there could be first
from Central Europe. Enough said, fasten seat belts, and tadaa! tadaaa!
here is our station list. Some more will be added when we are through
with the tapes, but these are identified until now.

Doing a little tuning around on the X-Band tonight...and amoung
other things I found the following Experimental Station.......

1684 KA90078 Experimental Station Jan/11/97 2332 EST FAIR ID
repeated in Medium speed CW as KA90078 followed by a long dash.
Freq only approximate at 1684 due to MER on 1685 making it hard
to zero beat. I know these stations with callsigns such as this
are licensed as experimental stations.....but does anyone know
where this specific station is..and what they're doing?????

Also hearing KXBT 1640, KGXL 1650 and Dallas Airport on 1680 quite well
too!! This TIS from Staunton, Va. on 1620 is booming in...it seems to
be a regular here most evenings!!

Receiver is....Collins 651S-1
Antenna is.....80 Meter Dipole

COMMENTS

Conditions continue to be poor. Must have spent all of my DX luck on
those TA's after Christmas. If the weather improves ie not -27 or so
and wind chills of -35 a trip to the DX site should happen next
weekend. Of course we could make it 3 in a row for cancellations
depending on Mother Nature. The good news is I don't live in the ice
storm belt out East. Take care and best of DX to all.

      GLENN HAUSER'S DX REPORT 98-02, Jan 15, 1998

CANADA. Some Montreal stations put off the air by the ice storm which
peaked Jan 9, have been able to return to the air only by changing
frequencies. CJAD, 800, lost all four towers which collapsed due to 6
inches of icing, but came back by using the previously silent 1410
kHz facility abandoned by CFMB when it moved to 1280, with about 8
kW. CBM was knocked off 940, but moved its emergency programming
(mostly instead of CBC Radio One network) to 93.5 FM which is
normally CBC Radio Two; CBM's own new FM frequency 88.5 has been
equipment testing but not ready for usage in the planned permanent
change from AM to FM. CBM programming can be accessed from the home
page of CBC: http://www.radio.cbc.ca (Bill Westenhaver, Montreal, Jan
  13, WORLD OF RADIO 924)

MEXICO/COLOMBIA. Someone changed the frequency of the XESHT third
harmonic I reported from 4290 to 4290.3, but it is actually on
4290.0. It should not be confused with the Colombian harmonic on
4290.3 Henrik Klemetz identified as Sincelejo, and which is on the
air at least an hour earlier in the morning from 1100, and which is
also the likely source of the unID harmonic on 5720.4 some have
reported. BTW, I am still hearing the Mexican, best yet on Jan 15
around 1245 with no problem from the utes; whilst in Laredo, TX, Jan
7 around 1730, I was able to detect the 4290 carrier on the YB-400
with nothing but whip antenna in the parking lot of TAMU (Glenn
  Hauser, OK)

Klaus Elsebusch, DL3EAY, replies to my remark about not trying to
QSL MW harmonics or informing the station of them: "That is a good
satire, or do you regard this as honest? A good honest DXer HAS to
inform radio stations about harmonics, mixing products, cross
modulation, etc... Harmonics etc. do disturb the services in the range
[where] such things occur..."
I draw this distinction: spurs and harmonics which ACTUALLY
interfere with other stations should be reported, especially if it is
an emergency communications frequency, but this is very seldom the
case, and most MW harmonics appear on relatively clear frequencies, and
allow us to hear stations which would otherwise not be possible. SW
stations' harmonics on much higher frequencies are also usually clear
and of great propagational interest. This is entirely different from a
SW station, for instance, putting spurs at various spots in and around
the SW BC band where it should be restricted to its own single
frequency (Hauser)
