[HCDX]: Glenn Hauser's SW/DX Feb 12

       GLENN HAUSER'S SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-06, Feb 12 1998

NOTE TO EDITORS: I can't help but notice that most of you never
publish THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO. Please consider doing so as
a gesture in connexion with our cooperative exchange of
information. Of course those with long print publishing delays
are excepted, but it is timely for weekly bulletins, and in fact
each WOR is available for about a month on the World Radio
Network Sound Store, http://www.wrn.org Thanks (Glenn)

THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO 928. Winter SWL Fest info; Passport
to Web Radio is a waste; Canada changes beam to USA; armed
militiaman arrested at WEWN; new public radio programs; Kisangani
reported back on SW; English from Belarus and Baku; goofy quirks
of the DX-375; and many of the stories below (Hauser)

COSTA RICA. Since 15050-USB has not been propagating at night,
RFPI resumed Feb 7, 6980-USB in the 0000-1200 period, //7385 AM.
The Feb CONTINENT OF MEDIA could start as early as Sat Feb 14
at 0330, 1030, along with Wed 2300, Thu 0700, Fri 1930 repeated
into March:

*Now there are TV sets on gas pumps; the value of silence
*DX the new IGIA hair removal system on 11 meters!
*Georgetown, Kentucky, college radio station plans World Network
*This American Life, real journalism, as good as the New Yorker
*Our Jam in Havana--why does TV Marti keep broadcasting?
*Native radio stations in Canada may not need licenses (Hauser)

HONDURAS [?]. Perhaps something more definite will have emerged
in the meantime, but not having heard the mystery on 6621v,
reported by Hans Johnson et al. in Cumbre DX, here are my
observations: there is a 1330 in Tegucigalpa listed in WRTH,
HRSW, La Voz Evangelica. If it were off to about 1324, this
could be its 5th harmonic. It could have been carrying a program
from or about Jalapa, which is an inland town in northwest
Nicaragua, "very near to Honduras" as someone heard them say,
and not too far from Teguci. The only other known Jalapa, or
Xalapa, in Veracruz, Mexico, is not on the coast and no 1330
vicinity stations are listed, nor is a Mexican likely to have
a religious format and name (Glenn Hauser, OK, Feb 12)

MEXICO. Glenn Hauser's Run for the Border, a January monitoring
expedition to Ciudad Acuna, Piedras Negras and Nuevo Laredo,
covering FM, AM, TV and cable, along with some Texas/Oklahoma
station news, is a comprehensive report of over 700 lines. It
is available on request to editors interested in publishing it
and individuals who have a particular interest in the subject.

NETHERLANDS. My new DX report in Spanish for February starts
airing Fri Feb 13 on RN's Radio-Enlace, continued in segments
following week(s); also repeated on other Spanish hour Sundays.
Also from Feb 19 on WWCR, Thu 2200 and Fri 2215 on 9475, and
later on RFPI (Lic. Guillermo Glenn Hauser, Oclajoma)

NEW ZEALAND. A news item on RNZI Feb 11 said the opposition
Labour party has pledged to bring RNZI back if and when they
take power, and if it is in fact closed down by the current
government. A call to Adrian Sainsbury confirmed this and he
added that a cabinet meeting which might make the decision
was scheduled for Feb 12 (Pete Costello, NJ, WORLD OF RADIO 928)

TURKEY. VOT's two frequency changes reported last week are
confirmed and are both great improvements. Actually the change
to 9540 at 1930 was in effect well before Feb 7, as noted by
Mark Fine and myself. At 2300 new 7300 is relatively clear
except for nearby hams, while old 9655 remains dominated by
Portugal. But I wish VOT would explain why they hate the Kurds
and Armenians so much (Glenn Hauser, OK, Feb 12)

U S A. WWBS, 11910, Macon GA, did not meet its target of testing
from Feb 6. Here's why: although the transmitter is ready,
and the FCC has authorized it, the station is waiting on an
electrical inspector to get out of the hospital and approve a
transformer. WWBS is actually on the outskirts of downtown Macon,
and does not expect there to be an RF interference problem; denies
knowing Brother Stair; and expects initial programming to be only
about two hours at 0000 UT, perhaps starting in a few weeks
(George Thurman, TX, Feb 10, RIB and WORLD OF RADIO 928) ###
