 HOT STUFF

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Paul Ormandy - paulorm@xxxxxxxx

Basil Jamieson has heard a station on 1020 with sports format and a
call-sign something like KSTA and slogan "Your sports-talk
authority...", can anyone tell me if this is the Roswell NM station
ex-KCKN??

JD Stephens - Madison AL - jdstephens@xxxxxxxx

After several nights not being on, the UNID 1680 station is back.
RIght now, it's Sunday evening, 9:00 PM CST (0300 UTC), and they're
playing a mix of classic rock and pop from the 60's and 70's. As
usual, never any IDs or announcements of any kind - just music.

This seems to be coming from a roughly Southeast direction from my QTH,
and it would be great if some other DXers in the SE U.S. could check to
see if this station is stronger at their QTH than mine (currently
fade-free solid S8 signal).

Again, this is not a harmonic - X-band testing or pirate.

****

Werner Funkenhauser - werner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Listening on 1680 from 0423 to 0445 yielded only the Dallas/Ft. Worth
TIS (// 1640). There were a couple of times when I thought I heard
instrumental music on 1680, but nothing that I could have claimed was
another station underneath. (It might have been overload on my MFJ 1025
for all that!)

Both Californians 1640 (black music) and 1650 (presumed with talk &
D/FW QRM) were in with poor-fair signals and there is with TIS activity
on 1610 and 1630. Also, there's someone (weak) off-frequency on 1690.
WPGH, WJJD and WCMQ are in with fairly good signals. The band is noisy,
but definitely productive.

Just for fun, I went down to the lower part of the band also. The
Colombian CARACOL is there on 810 // 700 // 5076.8.

I'd say you've got a loal of some sort, low power at that. Now if only
you can ID that sucker.

Equipment used: Icom R71A equipped with ESKAB PLAM, MFJ 1025 used to
phase dual 50 foot wires strung oppositely NE/SW. I also used a Kiwa
loop at times.

Updated info e-mailed to me by the operations manager at WTDY-1480
Madison, WI, which is moving to 1670 soon:

"Had an engineering meeting and it now appears testing will begin
around March 17!!!! Stay tuned. Still plan to go full blast on April
13."

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Tim Noonan - Madison WI - DXing@xxxxxxxxx

I phoned WKSH 1370 Sussex WI on 3 March to inquire as to their plans
for moving to the expanded band. The gentleman with whom I spoke told
me that they plan to move to 1640 in about two months, or about May
1998. At that time they will cease broadcasting on 1370, i.e., they
will not simulcast but rather simply move to 1640, using one of the
existing towers. The station airs a religious format.

 INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS

Jef Jaisun - eljefe@xxxxxxxxxxx - Seattle (DXing from Lahaina and Hilo,
HI)

The DXing difference between Lahaina, Maui and Hilo on the Big Island
is massive. Lahaina faces west, with the mountains directly behind it.
Hilo faces east, towards the US mainland. A casual AM bandscan from
Hilo on 2/21 circa midnight local time revealed great cx to the west.
KFI-640 was in like a local, as was the SS station on 1020 (in L.A. I
believe). KRVN-880 was very strong. Also heard were KGO-810, KIRO-710
and a possible KOMO-1000. Conversely, only KIRO and the SS station were
heard from Lahaina, and very weakly. Best catch from Lahaina was
KFQD-750, Anchorage, AK. Conspicuously missing from Hilo was
Papeete-738, a regular in Lahaina. Also, curiously, no Mexican or
Central American stations were heard.

There is a TIS on 530 at the entry of the Kilauea Volcano National
Park, with cautions and info about the area. No ID given on the tape
loop, and the park ranger at the entry didn't know the calls. Does
anybody have a listing for this station?

KPUA-670, Hilo, was not audible in Lahaina, and most Honolulu stations
were extremely weak in Hilo. In my last report, I mentioned a Hawaiian
with JJ on 970. That was a mistake. The station is actually on 940, and
was blown off in Hilo by KFRE-Fresno. My JJ on 972 was legit. KAHU-1060
does not get into Lahaina. As far as I can tell, I nailed every
Hawaiian station on this trip, although I didn't hang around for every
ID. As soon as I can borrow a current log book with the HI stations
listed, I'll send in my complete list with slogans, et al. Meanwhile,
if you're on 1110 and you hear someone slur "K-A-Y," it's really
KAOI-Wailuku...studios about three blocks from Saeng's, a really great
Thai restaurant, hi!

HONDURAS

1460 R Conga, recently verified after a 'phone call and visit to the
station by Honduran DXer Elmer David Escoto Romero. They told
Elmer they did get my first report and passed it on to Radio
Internacional (4930 SW) because they thought the report must be
for them. Once Elmer told then that it was their MW outlet I
heard, they were rapt. The v/s is Ruth de Handal, Sub-Gerente,
who sent a friendly personal letter and two stickers. Hopefully
thanks to Elmer's work, they now know that R Conga can be heard
by DXers and future requests for QSLs for the MW outlet will be
       answered promptly.
