Howdy all & welcome to PiPa#213! (This is just the cover sheet, PiPa #213

Things are busy! This weekend is the WPPR "East Coast Free Radio

for more info. I'll be there, too--this one also looks like a dandy. In
addition to a bunch of workshops, the head of FCC enforcement is scheduled
to participate in a round-table discussion of unlicensed broadcasting!
According to advance registration, several hundred people will be here...
Jesse Walker was kind enough to send this info from Free Radio Berkeley:
"Workshops, planning sessions, direct actions at the NAB convention, etc.
will highlight April 6,7,8. Our gathering spot will be the Unitarian Church
at 3616 E. Lake Mead Blvd., a little northeast of downtown Las Vegas between
N. Pecos Blvd. and Clifford St. The facility will hold about 200 folks in
the main hall along with some smaller rooms for individual sessions and
workshops. A kitchen is there as well so if we can get a food crew together
we can have meals in house. Opening session will take place on Monday,
April 6 at 10 AM. The schedule of workshops and other activities is still
being organized. Planning for NAB actions will take place on Monday evening.
Our attorney, Luke Hiken, is scheduled to be on an NAB convention panel
opposite the general counsel for the FCC on Tuesday morning. A free radio
station will be on the air for the duration of our stay and turned over to
the community when we leave."
Hobby Broadcasting
The first issue of Hobby Broadcasting was mailed out. If you're on the list,
you should already have it. If not, get it before it's gone! It's 32 pages &
has articles on FM pirating, Getting the "chirps" out of your transmitter,
radio syndication, news, music reviews, etc.
Here are the new, revised costs: 1-year sub in the US cost $12 per year ($15
by surface mail to Canada, $19 by air to Canada & $17 by surface to Europe &

The Last of the Pirate Radio Directories!
I'm not talking about the 1998 Pirate Radio Directory, which should be out
in a few months (?). The old pre-1993 Pirate Radio Directories are almost
extinct. I just bought the last of the stock out from Tiare & no more will
be printed. Once they're gone, that's it. The only years left are 1991 &
1993. If you're really into listening to North American shortwave pirates
and want to read up on the history, here's your chance. Each directory costs
$6 (doesn't matter what year) + $2 shipping in the U.S. Make any checks

This PiPA is LATE! I?m trying to catch up with all of my other work and I

I had a chance to see about 20-30 of you PiPa folks at the SWL Winterfest in
Kulpsville a few weeks ago. It was great to meet ya?ll for either the first
time or once again (depending). The total turnout seemed be low this year,
but the pirate contingent keeps growing. Before long it seems that the
shortwave hobbists will entirely consist of pirate fans! Then, at Timonium
last week, I spotted (& chatted with) at least 5 more people who were at
Kulpsville! Small world!
QSLS FROM MONTANA AUDIO RELAY SERVICE: Dreeble the Martian, verification
signer for the Montana Audio Relay Service, passes on word that M.A.R.S. now
has 5 QSL designs. M.A.R.S. uses Box 293, Merlin, Ontario, N0P 1W0
And while we?re on the subject of QSLs, Joe Filipkowski, the Providence
maildrop operator, confirms that Radio Gerbil is indeed using the Providence
drop (even though the address given in the program sounds like ?Box 28413,
Slip Up, Kentucky, 02908?).
