N R C ANNUAL CONVENTION
September 4-7, 1998
Best Western - Oak Hills
San Antonio, Texas

Hold onto your hats because this is going to be a big one! First of
all, there is no more receptive city in the world than San Antonio.
You think you will be going there for the radio conference, but when
you leave you will still be talking about the remarkable city sights,
the Alamo, sure! The Riverwalk? The restaurants? Six Flags over
Texas? Sea World? Tower of the Americas? It's endless!
And be sure to bring your radio! Imagine! DXing from a city you'e
been trying to DX for years! Our host, Dale Hamm, has arranged a tour
of WOAI from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Wouldn't it be a kick to
walk through the hallowed halls of one of Americas' last truly Clear
Channel operations?
    But wait, there' more!
If we start listing all the stations you can visit on this page,
you just know that one or more stations will be changing their call
signs to make us look foolish. So we'll just say, in a city with two
dozen radio stations youer going to be hard pressed to hear them all,
let alone visit the ones Dale will suggest we go see.
But the real fun? Of course. Meeting many of the DXrs you're
read about and who have become such familiar names in the hobby. Many
of them will have attended these conventions in the past and they'll be
able to help you figure out what's going on most of the time. Our
tried and true receptionist will keep you newcomers on track too. So
come on Friday if you possibly can and plan for a full day of
activities on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday morning we'll have the annual radio station quiz .. and a
live taping of the "Travellog" .. a tour across the country with our
dial set to one a.m. frequency .. loads of fun. In between the
scheduled events, relax, meet and chat with others who share this
wonderful hobby. It's really a neat time for all of us.

KKJY-1640-Lake Oswego OR is finally on te air! As I type this at 2045
PDT, they are still on with Rel. pgming.

5/15. Well, KKJY-1640 signed back on the air this morning. So I wonder
how long they will stay on this time? Maybe they finally have their
problems solved.

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

I received a phone call today from the Assistant Eng. at KGXL.
According to her, KGXL received over 75 reports. They have had QSL
cards made up and they are in the process of sending them out.

In other X Band news. Those of you that are still trying to hear
KKJY-1640-Portland, they have been on and off the air lately. Here is
some information I got from an Eng. News letter. "Crawford
Broadcasting, owners of KKSL, Lake Oswego and KKPZ, Portland put KKJY,
Lake Oswego on the air on Mon May 3rd. They blew up a cap in the 1330
pass/1640 block filter after a few days, but it has been replaced." As
I type this tey are still off the air. The info didn't say when they
would be back. But I presume soon. I thought I would pass that along.

An X-BAND Extravaganza!

TESTS

1700 KDSX TX Denison, 5/2 2233-2325 - Weak, at first, with bits of
test announcement under much stronger WCMQ, then nothing until
2316 when the signal showed up again much stronger with a clear
test announcement mentioning call letters. "Don't Be Cruel"
heard after. No code heard here. [JR-NY]

DX

1640 KDIA CA Vallejo, 4/26 0300 - horrible mess of images, local

1640 WFNMt MA Boston, 4/29 0042 - Might have been KDIA, but bits of

Can somebody tell me where KKLW is? I scribbled a lot of notes as I was
band-scanning on my trip down Hiway 61, and I was reasonably certain
this ID was hrd on 1360 near Helena, AR. Problem is that 1360-Helena is
(and has been for a long time) KFFA. KKLW is not KFFA's FM, so there's
no cross-ID involved. Format hrd at 1:00pm CDT 5/4/98 was relig.

I did some browsing on Grupo Radio Centro's web-page
(radiocentro.com.mx/grc) and came up with e-mail addresses for the
following MW stations:

 790 XERC El Fonografo - fonografo@xxxxxxxxxx
1110 XERED Radio Red - redam@xxxxxxxxxx
1320 XEJP R Variedades - variedades@xxxxxxxxxx
1030 XEQR R Centro - rcentro@xxxxxxxxxx
1560 XEFAJ R Consentida - consentida@xxxxxxxxxx

I looked for 1150 XECMQ Formato 21 and couldn't find an address on
their page though I guess, if they do have one, it would probably be
formato21@xxxxxxxxxx

I also found XEWK's e-mail addr at the Radiopolis home page

1190 XEWK - racosa@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

And could someone please let me know Nils Jakobssen's e-mail addr -
which has slipped thru my computer change-over.

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

As many of you know I have had very bad Powerline noise here on the
Northern Oregon coast fot quite sometime. There is a Power Company
noise man that covers most of the state from Albany, OR. The two of us
have been trying to run down the trouble for several months now. Well,
last week he found the problem. It tuned out to be a bad transformer
down the road about 1 1/2 miles to the South. I had noticed that the
noise was even getting into my Eastern Beverage running 90 degrees from
the powerlines and over 200 feet away. All my antennas have co-ax
runing to them with matching transformers between the end of the co ax
and the antenna. Normally my antennas pick up little or no noise. Well
the power company (Pacific Power) took the transformer off line and
re-ran the lines to another transformer. The noise level here is down
to what it was 10-15 years ago. FANTASTIC! I'm all ready for next DX
season!

IRCA Mexican Log, 5th Edition

The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 5th edition of its
MEXICAN LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico
by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power,
slogans, schedule in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In
addition, stations that have changed frequency since 1996 are

completely updated from the 1996 edition and carefully cross-checked by
IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an indispensable reference
for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size is 8 1/2" x 11" and
three hole punched for easy binding (optional).

Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $7.00 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $8.00
