GLENN HAUSER'S SW/DX REPORT 98-37, August 25, 1998
THIS WEEK ON WORLD OF RADIO 954: See topic summary at

CANADA. It happened during some silly tennis game in July, and
it happened again Aug 23, Sunday at 1505, instead of CBC/RCI's
Some of the Best Minds, on 13650 Sackville carried BBC WS instead
//15220, 17840, etc. SOBM was left on 11855 only, which here was
mostly absorbed into inaudibility. Someone has the feed switching
misprogrammed, could be either in Montreal or Sackville. Before
1500, for This Morning Sunday, it was 11855//13650 properly

COSTA RICA. News from RFPI: soliciting ideas for a new QSL card
design. Name-the-kitty contest: "Paz", which happens to sound
like "Paws". 10 kW transmitter is still off, awaiting a part in
the mail; should be back by Aug 27 on 21460, and stay on until
about 0300, since 30 kW is switching from 15049 to 6975 in the
2330/2355 period. It's inconvenient to make the change, which
takes about 5 minutes, and involves a lot of retuning, later in
the evening, and reports from eastern NAm indicate 6975 is better
than 15049 by 0100. Off at 0800 except UT Sat, Sun and perhaps
Mon when 6975 stays on later. Once the 10 kW is back on, will see
about reviving the SSB unit, and perhaps juggle frequencies and
times. Pacifica Network News starts Sept 2, M-F, or rather UT Tue-
Sat 0030-0100 on 6975 and for WNAm 21460. Pacifica also has a 5-
minute headline news service which might be added later. RFPI's
new production also starts the first week in Sept, Millennium
Dreams, allowing James and Debra Latham to return to their roots
of producing radio programs, 60 mins Mon at 2000, Fri 2330. Not
just about RFPI's history and plans, but with guests, remotes
from different parts of Costa Rica, a lot of storytelling. The
block of programs currently at 2330 moves up to 2300, and the
0000 block to 2330. The new programming quarter starts in Sept.
Four staff members are now at the AMARC conference in Milan;
reports on this downloaded from internet will be broadcast soon,
times not yet chosen (James Latham and Joe Bernard, RFPI Mailbag

CZECH REPUBLIC. Subject: Czechs Worried Over Radio Free Iraq
Here are some excerpts from Radio Prague's news in English for
Sunday, August 23:
"Radio Free Europe officials have rejected criticism regarding
their failure to consult with Czech government officials on the
chosen headquarters for Radios Free Iran and Iraq, which are to
go on the air late September ...
"Czech deputy premier Egon Rounsky pointed out on Saturday that
the ...(?billet?) ... chosen to house this service was located
right next to a nursery school and the cabinet had no information
as to what kind of security measures were being taken. He
stressed that when the safety of Czech citizens was involved the
cabinet should have been consulted, and said he planned to take
up this point with the US ambassador to Prague and US officials
when he accompanies President Havel on a trip to the United
States in September." (Roger Tidy, UKOGBANI, Aug 23, WORLD OF
RADIO 954)

U S A. AFN/AFRTS random monitoring turns up another good show,
Into Tomorrow, one of the best technology call-ins, with Dave
Graveline, found in progress at 1050 UT Sun Aug 23 when only
4278.5 was audible; presumably starts at 1006, tho the original
is 2 or 3 hours long. See http://www.graveline.com And last week
for the Savvy Traveler, Sun at 1700 I should have given the
website as http://www.savvytraveler.org (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF
