Howdy all & welcome to PiPa#221! (This is just the cover sheet, PiPa #221
should either be an attached file to this or should follow right after my
own greetings & name).
This issue's a few weeks late & I'm desperately trying to catch up with
everything. Hey, I knocked a day off of this one! Expect the next issue
(#222) in the next few days.
I'll be in New England at the Boxboro (NW Boston) hamfest this coming
weekend 8/29-8/30 with Hobby Broadcasting. If you're there, I hope to see

The next (Fall) issue is back from the printer and should be
available via subscription in late August and on the newsstands in early
September. Some of the features include a "toolkit" for starting a

Radio Berkeley and Radio Mutiny, the FCC's criminal case against Lonnie

PIRATE SHIP ELECTRA PROJECT SCUTTLED! [Another radio ship project has
failed]. NASWA member Doug Robertson of Oxnard, CA sent a copy of a notice
of a U.S. Marshal's sale in the U.S. District Court for the So. District of
Georgia (Savannah Division) of the "Offshore Radio Broadcast Station Tug
'Electra,'" an "all welded steel, model bow, capstan towboat fitted with a
complete radio broadcast station, including radio tower." For additional
info or an appointment for inspection, contact H. David Scott, Southeastern
Marine Surveying Co., 912-233-4157, FAX 912-238-0821. It was to be sold to
the highest bidder on July 15 at 10:00 a.m. by the U.S. Marshal. [I called
the SE Marine Surveying Company and they said it sold for around $35,000 at
auction. Chris Lobdell.]
The ship ran into another boat on the way down, and there were some lawsuits
involved. Also, the preacher that was financing it ran out of money.
Neither Scott nor Allan [Weiner] was on the ship when any of that happened,
nor did they have any involvement with the problems that caused the Feds to
come. Allan has been working on his land-based stn, and Scott was down in
the Caribbean until a month or so ago. They both got paid by the preacher
for all the work they did, so, other than the fact that the ship they worked
so hard on won't be on the air, they both made out okay on the deal. [Thanks

Paul Ormandy noted that Greg Majewski's unid on 6812 is Radio Ondas del Rio
Mayo, Nueva Cajamarca and that they are a good verifier! Thanks Paul! You
can hear his DX info on Radio New Zealand International during "Mailbox",
fortnightly broadcasts, Mondays 2125 UTC on 17675kHz, Wednesdays 1735 UTC on
6145kHz and Fridays 1930 UTC on 9875kHz.

Brad Clark: "loggings SUCKED. Conditions SUCKED. Getting sunburnt on the 4th

static. I?m surprised I heard what I did. But I?m gonna lose my hearing

George Zeller: "WSRR has been announcing a web site, but I could not copy
all of it. So, I put WSRR into web searchers. I couldn't find the pirate,
but I did find that there is a WSRR on 98.1 MHz in Memphis, TN with a
classic rock format. While finding that, I also discovered that there is a
WREC in Memphis, TN on 600 kHz MW with a news/sports format. Why do all the
pirates take their call letters from stations in Memphis?"

"Not much again due to high levels of static and poor propagation. I
will keep trying and thanks for all of the hard work. It is appreciated."
Brad Clark:
"Conditions have been fair to good here, not too much thunderstorm activity
locally, but the crashes get loud at times in the evenings. Has anyone in
the west tried to go on at about 0530-0630? 40 metres has been open to
Australia then, I wonder if there are any Aussie or NZ pirate chasers?
There has also been a lot of ANDVT (digitally encrypted voice)
transmissions on 6958 and 6961, quite strong here at times, but not as
sloppy and wide as RFPI.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, we're scheduled for 105 degrees today!"

"I was informed via the FRN chat room by H.V. Short that I was the first
person to ever receive a qsl report based on info to him over the internet.
I posted a report in the ACE loggings web page and talked to him in the FRN
chatroom, and he said a qsl card is in the mail already!
Here's some of what he said :
"RFM's first broadcast was on Sept 1, 89 on 7425KHZ
You are the first person to get a RFM QSL via the internet!!
You got the QSL and know the time it takes to get one what with all the
snail mail delays. Send to maildrop, then he sends it out. Takes about 2
wks before the op gets it then he has to send it out.
RFM loves sending out QSL's."
