Australia will get a newly licenced AM station for the Torres Strait
region on October 16th. It will launch at 6am AEST (2000 UTC Oct 15th).
The call sign is 4MW with a power of 5Kw on 1260 kHz AM.The community
licence has been allocated to Torres Strait Islands Media Association
which is an affiliat of the ever growing National Indigenous Radio
Service Network (all of which are on FM such as 4AAA Brisbane).

This community wanted an AM service to cover the entire Torres Strait
as they haven't been happy with the coverage they have been getting
from 4TI 1062kHz. 4TI is the ABC regional station in the area and TSIMA
have been sharing time in the afternoons on that station. 4MW will
initially broadcast an 18 hour day 6am-midnight 5 days a week and
silent on weekends due to limited programing resources. The address for
reports is P O Box 385 Thursday Island 4875. Phone number 0740691524.
Main spokesman for TSIMA is Mr.Wayne Seeky. The engineering of this
sation was done by Channel 7.

Mark Connelly - WA1ION@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

On Friday night and Saturday night (25 & 26 SEP 1998), I did some
listening and heard quite a bit of southerly DX. Friday night /
Saturday morning from E. Harwich was "primo" to Cuba, the western
Caribbean, and northwestern South America. The long-sought mystery
signal in the 604 - 605 kHz region has finally been ID'ed. It's a
Cuban Rebelde outlet parallel to 600 kHz. It was noted at 0146 UTC on
26 SEP, this time on 605.6 kHz. Pre-dawn on Saturday featured some
Mexicans and a really good signal from RJR Jamaica on 720. On Saturday
afternoon, on my return trip from the Cape, I did a sunset DX "pit
stop" at the west end of the Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury, MA. This
site really "cranks in" the DX from Africa and Brazil, because of its
direct salt water exposure on those bearings. Senegal-765 and Western
Sahara-711.05 were just about pegging the S-meter. Some tastier treats
like Brazil on 690 and 760 (both Fortaleza), Gambia on 648 and 907.8,
Burkina-Faso on 747 showed up. Everything from the Canary Islands was
loud (much better than the Spain stations). Many Caribbean and
Venezuelan stations came in with big signals as darkness progressed
westward. Seldom- logged WKVM Puerto Rico had a good signal on 810.

[Connelly*D-MA] = Duxbury, MA (GC= 70.651 W / 42.047 N)
(west end of Powder Point Bridge, at King Caesar Road)

[Connelly*H-MA] = East Harwich, Cape Cod, MA (GC= 70.021 W / 41.713 N)
(near junction of Routes 39 & 137: pitch pine forest 2 km from ocean)

Bruce Portzer / Chuck Hutton
DX'ing from Grayland Beach, WA
1000' unterminated Beverage
R8A / R71A

What a night. Sure we can hear Hawaii every time we set up a Beverage
at the coast. I think I had logged only 830 and 850 before - the former
never too strong and the latter often good. This time was different.
When you've not heard 550 with maybe 8 Dxpeditions worth of trying, and
all of a sudden on peaks it's the only thing you can hear on 550....
You get the idea you might want to try a few other Hawaiian channels.
What's that? Hawaii on top of 570 too? And also 620?? Oh my.... They're
everywhere!

And everywhere (almost) they were. I count 29 Hawaiian stations on the
air. I n one night of DXing, I made good tapes with ID's of 19. Most
were on top of their channel, at least at ID time. Some were
entertainment quality. A few more were in but not confirmed - 690 and
1270 for example.

We'll get the others next time. Our thanks to the mighty aurora of
Thursday night which left a giant shield over many of those
interference generating Canadians and Japanese stations. All we had to
worry about was a few domestics and a handful of nasty hets from
Australia / New Zealand.

Logd are from Saturday night 9/26 and Sunday morning 9/27. All times
are PDT which hopefully is what you like.

550 KMVI Maui , very good most of the night, usually dominant, good
ID at 10:09 PST as "Cruisin' 55, KMVI". Good, reggae at 10:22
       PM.
570 KONG Kauai 10:22 PM Hawaii's KONG- FM 93.5 and AM570, good on top
with dance beat then light reggae.
590 KSSK Honolulu pop mx, car ad for Silverados, Elton John then good
       ID 10:49 PM.
620 KIPA Kona 10:52 PM way on top, rock solid, not a fade with Armed
Forces and recycling promos, Lone Ranger show.
650 KHNR Honolulu 10:28 PM ID as "News On Hawaii, Maui and the big
island, this is ?? news station, AM-650 KHNR".
670 KPUA Hilo 11:04 PM poor under Boise as they paused for 10 seconds
for ID's from local stations on the Rainbow Sports Radio
       Network.
720 KUAI Kauai 10:40 PM with auto parts and car ads, U of Hawaii
Rainbows football game, over / under Las Vegas.
760 KGU Honolulu 10:37 PM absolutely smashing, AM-760 KGU The Ball
ID, ESPN Sports Net, other sports promos.
870 KAIM Honolulu 11:30 PM KAIM ID, way way way on top, Christian mx,
       "Hawaii's Inspiration station".
900 KNUI Maui 11:25 PM light rock mx and KNUI ID, on top and good.
940 KJPN Honolulu 11:35 PM Japanese pop mx mixing with KFRE Fresno,
       occasionally on top.
990 KIKI Honolulu 12:27 AM "Proud To Be Country, Hawaii's Country,
990 AM", clear but mixing with a Mexican.
1040 KLHT Honolulu 7:00 AM "This is KLHT Honolulu" on what sounded
like a clear channel from a state away, then church mx.
1110 KAOI Maui 11:15 PM owned the channel with Hawaiin football game
(Bears vs. ??) but not the U of H Rainbow game as was on other
       stations.
1420 KCCN Honolulu 11:51 AM easy, on top (!) but not strong and in a
       bobbling mess with KCCN ID.
1500 KUMU Honolulu 7:21 AM not strong but sometimes on top of a weak
channel, ad mentioning $5000 contribution to charity from a
       department store.
1540 KISA Honolulu 7:08 AM ad for an attorney, mention of church
       broadcast, on top.

OK The Emu Plain Prison has nothing to do with the radio station except
it is in its grounds. As yet the owner has no name or callsign
allocated as on test. Will advise in due course, cause it sounded like
I gave you the mistaken impression that the Emu Plains Prison was
running the show. Its not. Well at least I THINK the transmitter and
antenna will be sage from someone pinching it!!
