(This is late... but some may have noticed and wondered! - ed)

I just received word that KYW-AM 1060kHz Philadelphia will be off the
air this Saturday night (Nov. 22, actually -pls) after midnight "for
several hours" into Sunday morning to conduct antenna repairs. I assume
this is fairly definite, as I was told that no talent has been
scheduled for anticipated down time.

KCNZ 1650 in Cedar Falls, Iowa is on the air now with a booming
signal into Denver. At 0300 EST 11/21.
They have ABC news and the slogan "The Talk Station". Ads for Iowa
Cyclone football.
I wish I could see something like this for a New England station.

***

Nigel Pimblett - Medicine Hat, AB - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

KCNZ logged here this afternoon with a strong signal while
broadcasting Cyclones football. Was noted later on with a test tone,
so apparently still testing. Was my day for IA, as I also logged 2
others from the state I hadn't heard before! The Iowa station on 1630
was also very strong, with no sign of the WY station. Is it on at the
moment?

Heard on a Kenwood R-1000 with terminated helical coil antenna:

1700 KBGG Des Moines, IA with business news 2331-2334 into a 10 sec

       not-for-profits.11/21
1690 KAYK Arvada, CO playing "Stand by Me" sung by Timon of the Lion
       King to Pumbaa. 2335 11/21
1670 WNML Warner-Robins, GA talking about game between Miss. State
and Arkansas and last second field goal that allowed MSU to win.
       2336 11/21
1660 KXOL Brigham City, UT blasting in as usual with, believe it or
not, a song by Walter Brennan, "Old Rivers". Believe me, he
       couldn't sing. ID at 2339 11/21
1650 KKTR Costa Mesa, CA with Los Angeles traffic reports ad nauseam
and WX at 2341 with a number to report wrecks on the "Trooper

it out. 2343 KCJJ playing the Go-Go Girls "We've Got the Beat"
and KKWY playing The Fifth Dimension "Last Night I Couldn't Get
to Sleep at All". KCJJ gave ID at end of Go-Go Girls 2345. This
combination of music was almost enough to overload my brain.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Craig Rathbone - Denver, CO - DXer@xxxxxxx

At this moment 0200 EST 11/22 I am not hearing KKWY at all on 1630.
I can hear KCJJ very strong as usual here in Denver. I did hear KKWY at
1900 EST Saturday fighting it out with KCJJ. The only times I have
heard Cheyenne is right about my local sunset. They have CNN news on
the hour and I have heard them use the call KJJL and 1370 K-Jewell
slogans.

1650 HUGE signal at 0200 obviously testing. Transmitter going on and
off, random selections of easy listening type music with levels
changing up and down. No announcements, ID's or speach of any
kind during the hour I listened. Meter on Harris RF590 said
10mv so it must be close. Suspect testing of WHKT (1KW night),

camping, nature walks, interpretive sessions, etc. Phone number
767-0446? Man gave call letter ID, woman mentioned the
Anza-Borrego Desert Foundation. Will have to try for this from
       home. (TRH-CA1)
(WNUB568) CA, Chula Vista Local pest has been running OC since
about Nov 10th. Several stations trying to poke through my
other pest on this channel (Balboa Park TIS). (TRH-CA)
WNDQ665 (Calls presumed) CA, Descanso 11/21 1900 Cuyamaca
Rancho State Park TIS is back on the air with tape loop about
Paso Picacho campgrounds and hiking. Gave phone number
444-7275. Thought this one was gone for good, as the station
was off a year ago with all signs taken down. One of my closest
       unheards from home. (TRH-CA1)
(KGB528) CA, Mt. Laguna 11/21 1745 Station appears to be
defunct. No signs, and volunteers at the visitor center had
never heard of it. Nothing on 530 either (station had been
listed on both frequencies over the years). (TRH-CA1)
UNID 11/19 0558 Male voice gave calls sounding like WNYD246. Tape
loop included the phrase "Each year, the ... 6000 hours."
Possibly WNYD243 Tehachapi with wind energy info? Can any LA
area DXers comment on the content of WNYD243's tape loop?
       (TRH-CA)
UNID 11/19 0630 Male voice caught on tape sounds like "You're
listening to WTYN244(?). Have heard message with these or
similar calls several times over the past year. (TRH-CA)
    UNID 11/19 2318 Female voice mentioning Highway 395. (TRH-CA)
UNID 11/18 2008 UNID HAR, seemed to mention Ontario, CA. Call
       letters sounded like WPSF425. (TRH-CA1)

1600 XETCT? Mexico, Tecate BCN 11/21 2030-2130 Station is using new
slogan "K-doble-T, La Tremenda" profusely, after every couple of
songs. Not sure if licensed calls are still XETCT (their
stationery said XETKT right from the start). Gets out very
well, seems to have increased power. (TRH-CA1)

Does anyone know of a light dimmer that does not cause QRM - make and
part #? My neighbor's cheap $7 dimmer he just bought is killing me, but
he's willing to replace it. TIA!

***

Paul Swearingen - PlsBCBDXER@xxxxxxx

Pardon me if I'm a little fuzzy on this ... but I believe that all
light dimmers radiate QRM when they're on, but if you turn them off,
not just all the way down, you'll cut the noise. I believe there's a
partial hardware fix involving a capacitor bridge, but as I said, I'm a
little fuzzy. Good luck!

***

Ragnar - Mesa, Arizona - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

I kind of let this post go because I don't believe there is a real good
fix. The thing that may help is winding two toroids on the wires to the
dimmer lines and winding onw CW and the other CCW. It is not a total
fix but it sure does choke a lot of the rf noise off.

Dimmers, touch lamps and fluorescent lights are all demons from hell
when it comes to DX. I have a TV from hell that is a noise monster. I
counterwound two toroids and placed my antenna a little further away
outside the house and cut the noise by about 80%.

Other than the toroids and the antenna being farther from the dimmer,
thats about it. There are some Dimmers that don't make much noise when
they are shut off but there arent many of them and I can't remember
which ones they are.

Chris - N0IJK - Ft. Lupton, CO - dxer1@xxxxxxxx

I had heard of a dimmer (that was fairly expensive) a few years ago
that had noise suppresion built in. Has anyone heard of it? It would be
worth it to me. Also, I saw a 3 position light switch (on-off-dim) that
is not supposed to generate QRM, but don't know anything about it. It
has been a few years. From the sound of the responses, I might be stuck
with the noise!!

***

Craig N0BSA - DXer@xxxxxxx

I thought I heard also that there was a brand or type of dimmer switch
that didnt create RF or that at least was supressed somewhat. There was
a discussion about this recently on the rec.radio.shortwave.

If you can you might want to post this question there or on one of the
ham usenet groups. Also you might go to www.arrl.org ( I think it is
.org), and find the tech area and ask them.

***

David Braun - dcbraun@xxxxxxxxxxx

When we built our house in 1991, we had installed "RF suppression"
dimmer switches on all lights on which my wife wanted dimmers except
the one which was three-way (don't think there was a 3-way available).
It was one compromise she made for my DXing (the other was letting the
radio IN the house!).

They have an off-dimmer-on setup, with no noise generated in either the
off or on setting. Once one goes bad, you'll hear the noise, which
will lead you to the offending switch. I've only had to replace one
since we've been here. They DO work.

and are thus more interested in most in our solicitations!

Fernando also gave their URL as www.rcn.com.co and wrote that live
audio is available from this site. He also gave www.digame.com as a
site for more info on Bucaramanga.
