Sunday, February 14, 1999 - KTGG-1540, Spring Arbor, MI will conduct a
DX test between 12:30 and 1:30 ELT. The test will be comprised of music,
in the forms of marches, classical, and Christian contemporary, plus
Morse Code IDs. KTGG will be using 470 watts non-directional. During the
test, phone calls will be accepted at 800-750-9723...BUT, QSLs will only

Monday, March 8, 1999 - KIML-1270, Gilette, WY will conduct a DX test
from 2:00-5:00 am ET. The test will consist of tones for proof
measuements, code IDs with frequency and location, and possibly some
"high power" rock and C&W. KIML will be operating with 5000 and 1000
watts, both non-directional and directional. The night pattern has two
major lobes at 032 and 200 degrees, as well as a minor lobe at 295
degrees. Major nulls are at 195, 225, and 335 degrees. Reception reports

For those out there in DX land who QSL Canadian stations, Canada Post
increased it's rates as of January 1st. 1999 too. The cost of First
Class mail from Canada to the United States is now 55 cents CAN.

International rates are going up this summer, according to an article I
read. The plan is that for Overseas (AO) rates, the present 60 cents
for the first half ounce is not changed, but the 50 cents postcard rate
goes up to 55 cents. To Canada, the rates will be altered (to a more
rational pricing?) from the present 46 cents for the first half ounce
and 52 cents for the first ounce to 45 cents and 55 cents, respectively.
Postcards will go up a nickel to 45 cents from the present 40. I don't
know about rates to Mexico, presently 35 cents for a postcard and 40/46
cents for the first 1/2 and 1 ounce rates.
A small consolation: While our first ounce rate goes up a penny to 33
cents this Sunday, the additional ounce rate goes down a penny to 22
cents. So the 2 ounce letter rate of 55 cents is unchanged and a 3
ounce letter drops to 77 from 78. But, the Priority Mail rate of $3
goes up to $3.20.
As for Canada Post, they raised rates for 1999 as well. The domestic
rate for the first weight step went up a penny from 45 to 46 cents, the
rate to the USA went up from 52 to 55 cents, the domestic second weight
step is now 73 cents, and the international rate went up from 90 to 95
cents. (I'm not clear how many grams go into their weight steps.)

Is anyone hearing a station on 1710 khz playing non-stop 50s rock, eg.
"Ain't That a Shame" Fats Domino. Apparently it is coming from the East,
as only heard on Eastern Beverage at 0800 EST 2/8.
2/8. Once again tonight the signal is back in. This time a talk program
on drinking water and health at 0645 UTC 2/9. Not a bad signal at times.

These few mediumwave logs were from a mostly-tropical band DXpedition on
Jan. 9th and 10th to Ocean City State Park, on the coast of Washington.
The Japanese stations were surprisingly good, considering the
Indonesian/PNG beam of the 270 degree Beverage antenna.
Yaesu FT-920 with Intl. Radio Co. filters
1000 ft. Beverage antennas at 240 degrees and 270 degrees
JAPAN 774 JOUB Akita, 1136 1/10 with serious-sounding talk by man in
Japanese; slow acapella music by female choir. Fair and
improving to good signal by 1150 recheck.
JAPAN 747 JOIB Sapporo, 1138 1/10 with talk or interview program in
Japanese. Good signal.
JAPAN 828 JOBB Osaka, 1142 1/10 with fast-paced Japanese talk. Fair.
JAPAN 891 JOHK Sendai, 1150 1/10 presumed with a poor signal of
Japanese talk by a woman, although it was hard to be positive on
the language due to 890 splatter.
SOUTH KOREA 972 HLCA Tangjin 1154-1200 1/10 with a woman announcer in
Korean. Christian hymn with piano accompaniment 1157, then FEBC
theme music 1200. Poor-fair.
SOUTH KOREA 1566 HLAZ Chenju 1220 1/10 peaking briefly with hymn and
Korean talk. Church choir music at 1704 recheck. Fair.
TAHITI 738 RFO Tahiti, 1128-1135 1/10 man and woman announcers in
French; slick production that sounded like a Radio France-Inter
relay. Into island music 1135. Good to very good signal; MUCH
better than 15170 kHz shortwave has been the last few months.
TONGA 1017 A3Z Nukua'lofa, 0800, 0900 1/9 and 1/10. This
regularly-heard station was notable for its *absence* this
DXpedition (not even a het heard either night). I was
particularly interested to see if Tonga would be on the air
since the island nation suffered through a severe cyclone Dec.
27th. Perhaps A3Z is off the air and has suffered damage to
transmitter and/or antenna. The following news item is from the
Associated Press:
Tonga AP, Dec 28: "The Pacific nation of Tonga faced food shortages and
a massive cleanup Sunday, after a cyclone blasted through the
islands, laying waste to crops and damaging buildings and power
lines. Not a single banana tree was left standing on islands
hit by Cyclone Cora, but there were no rpts of injuries, a R.
Tonga spokesman told New Zealand's National Radio. Bananas are
a major food source in Tonga and one of the country's principal
export crops. Police said a 23-foot fishing boat with seven
people on board, originally thought missing, had come into port
before the storm and was safe. About 70,000 people on Tonga's
main island of Tongatapu, 1,800 miles northeast of Wellington,
were without electricity or phone lines. Winds reached up to
100 mph during the cyclone. Wx forecaster Chris Webster said
winds on the island had dropped considerably and the cyclone had
moved to the ocean southeast of Tonga."

One or two newsletters ago, someone asked what could be heard on 690 now
that Montreal is off the air.
Well, the other day, I was able to listen from home and here's what I
heard:
Starting at 17:30 pm EST, I heard southern Gospel music which turned out
to be WZAP in Bristol, VA. At the top of the hour, I heard their legal
id and they signed off the air for the day at 18:15. From about 17:45
onwards, along with WZAP, I heard WJOX in Birmingham, AL. For about a
half an hour, until WZAP signed off, the two stations were mostly equal.
A full legal id was heard at the top of the hour. WJOX lasted until
about 18:30 when they faded out and a Spanish speaking station started
coming in. I didn't listen long enough to get an id, but from earlier
comments, this might have been Colombia.
WJOX was a nice catch for me and was a new state heard.
All stations were heard with WOR 710 nulled out (I'm about 10 miles
south west of WOR and the rest of the blowtorches in the NJ swamps west
of New York City).
Setup is a Sony ICF-2010 inside a 12" box loop antenna.

interesting stuff, including Province #10, and a new one from
California!

woman with weather (not // 740), faded back at 0122 with woman
interviewing a novelist, mostly gone until about 0300 when CBC
flourish heard before news, fade, then back with
classical/chamber music. Tuned in again at 0500 to find Radio
Nederland on 690 after the CBC News, not // 740. Must be from
the west coast, as there is nothing else listed on 690 with CBC,
and the CBC network goes to international shortwave programs
after 0100 local time. Wow! This would have been a great night

690 KGGF KS Coffeyville, JAN 30 2251 - with Coffeyville Red Raiders
basketball. FEB 1 2200 - with Kansas basketball. FEB 4 2359 -
Jim Bohannon Show, then call letters. [JR-NY]
690 KFXN MN Minneapolis, FEB 5 1842 - mention of KFAN, then whiney
announcement from ESPN's Tony Kornheiser explaining that the
station must sign off. Strong signal with clear ID: "The Score
is KFXN, Minneapolis-St. Paul, the Score.", then dead air. Only
weak religion remained. My QSL card has already arrived from
last week's tentative reception, and the signer filled in "500
watts", which is what PJ Durkin also had told me via e-mail.

WCCO/WXII/Relsj, at 0219 a woman was heard with "This is KPLS".
Must be working on 50000/20000 watt CP? Wow! I will review tape
again to be sure, but it sure sounded like KPLS and all the other
stations normally heard were accounted for. [JR-NY]

church service, mention of 5:00 o'clock, very strong signal, WRTH

My visit to Guatemala
I had a trip to Guatemala City from December 28, 1998 through January 1,
1999. Although my stay was so short, I tried very hard to check what the
local stations were going on. Based on my research, I realized a lot of
stations having shifted from MW to FM. Followings are the MW stations

Well, today I picked up the Realistic TRF I bought on e-bay. I have no
idea what to expect from it. I'd like to hear from some TRF owners. How
does it stack up compared to a newer radio such as the GE Superadio II?
What are its strengths and its weaknesses?

Go easy on the ON & OFF switch the end breaks off easily, also the Tone
switch does the same thing. Your radio probably needs a tune up. There
is a lot you can do for this radio, a digital readout, a plug-in
external ferrite bar antenna if your handy. They were a nice little
radio in there day.

OK. I'll heed your advice even though the switches all feel very solid.
It feels like a very solidly built little radio. When you say it
probably needs a tune up, is that something that can be done by ear, or
is test equipment required? I think you made a comment in an earlier
message implying that the dial calibration might be off. Not so on this
one; it's right smack on the money all the way from the bottom to the
top of the band. A nice thing about this one is that even though its
specs say it only goes up to 1620, mine goes up to 1650. I have no
trouble getting KKTR on it. Any comments from fellow TRF owners/users
are welcome.

The RS TRF was one of the best values in low-priced portable AM
receivers ever offered. It had a relatively long ferrite loopstick
antenna along 1 stage of tuned RF amplification ahead of the converter.
I had one back in the 80s. It traveled with me to the Philippines. I
gave it away to a good friend who could appreciate its performance and
value.
Few sets costing much more equaled its performance.

Although I've modified the daylights out of mine, and still use it after
twenty some odd years, the biggest drawback I remember after purchasing
it was that it seemed a bit insensitive, particularly at the low end of
the band. Then I realized that I was comparing it to my "big" radios,
connected to external antennas. Once I parked it inside my air core
loop, it really shone.
Its ferrite loop is pretty big by today's standards, and you may not
find the relative insensitivity a problem. After all, I was trying to
hear Mexico City and New York on 660 for example. Those were the days
of clear channels, and there wasn't anything else on the frequency.
Moments after I sent the message about the TRF "insensitivity", I
remembered something else. The slider volume and tone controls got
scratchy with age,and couldn't be cleaned. I eventually replaced the
volume with a regular potentiometer, and the tone control with a fixed
resistor. This was the 12-655 model...

Thanks to all who replied about the TRF. I have the 656A; Ralph says
that the 655 was the best one. Until then, I didn't even know there was
more than one. My impressions are these: During the day, when there's
not a station on every frequency, the sensitivity was every so slightly
less than the Superadio II, but the selectivity was inferior. The noise
floor seems amazingly low. At night, when signal levels are closer to
each other than during the day, the TRF's selectivity seemed to be just
fine, although I didn't do a nighttime comparison to the Superadio II. I
also haven't tried it with the Select-a-Tenna.
The audio quality is surprisingly good. Perhaps the bandwidth was made a
little wide to accomplish this. That would account for the selectivity.
I got lucky; this one looks like it just came out of the box for the
first time. It's a real beauty. Any comments on the above observations
would be appreciated.

Miswrote myself. The RS 12-655/"TRF" went with us to Bermuda (Naval Air
Station 1978-1981 WG-11 Electronics Mechanic/civilian). It served me
well: RMC-1476 and Albania-1395 with no external antenna. Believe I
passed it to the abovestated friend in June 1981 in Indianapolis, en-
route Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa (WG-12 Electronics
Mechanic)...All this rubbage is for Ragnar, i.e. the Navy/Marine Corps
Stuff... 1981-1984.
Anyway, can't really compare the TRF to anything other than my Sony
ICF-2002. Side by side, though, the TRF would probably kick the ICF-
2002 into the nearest ditch, barefoot, with no antenna (the radios, not
the ditch). The ICF-2002 isn't much on its eensie-weensie ferrite
rectangle, on AM.
With the Space Maggot SM-2, though, the ICF-2002 is better. Much better
selectivity and tone. Used the ICF/SM combination in trips to the
Philippines: excellent combination. With the SM-2, though, the TRF would
have been considerably improved, too.
For foaming-at-the-mouth serious DXing, the TRF will be bested by the
likes of JRDs, Drakes, Yaesu; but so will the GE "Super" radio. But if
I'm gonna go to NC's Outer Banks and try to DX Radio Lower-
Schnouzenheimer-777 in Lower Cay, Dutch West Indies, I'd take the ICF
and the Space Maggot.
Hope this makes some sense to someone, somewhere.

How come nearly every Mexican AM station I get is in AM stereo and few
US AMs are in stereo? Do they sell AM stereo rigs south of the border
and not here in the US?

For the most part, an all-music format doesn't make a whole lot of sense
on the AM band up here. AM tends toward talk/sports formats, which make
little sense to transmit in stereo.
In Mexico, however, I suppose that an all-music AM format is a viable
format, witness the number of XEs that program all-music. Stereo makes
sense for music, it seems to me.

In some parts of Mexico (Ensenada comes to mind) FM stations are rare,
and with the mountainous terrain in many areas, AM stereo makes sense,
especially when you consider that AM stereo is widely available in car

Part of the blame lies squarely on the FCC. They refused to pick a
"standard" system, leaving Harris, C-Quam and others to fight it out.
The receiver makers, sat around and very few AM Stereo rigs were made.
In our corporate tests of AM stereo, they quality was extremely good on
all systems. Another factor was the "costs" AM stereo needs a good tower
system that is fairly "broadbanded" Alot of OLD directional arrays don't
fit the bill. Most AM are barely getting buy, and were unable to modify
their systems. \Some larger AM's went stereo and really sounded good.
WHAS in Louisville comes to mind. Back when they were playing music !!
Thats the other factor, Very few AM play music, and most AM radios being
made today are so POOR that most people don't even listen to AM anymore.
Lots of factors went into the demise of AM stereo. Its pretty much a
"dead horse" now.

Out west a lot of the US stations that program a Mexican format. They
are in AM stereo too. I listen to them because they sound better than
the other formats.
I have two ears when I listen to people talk and I have two ears when I
go to the football games. Why do the stations think I don't have two
ears who program talk and sports? There is a talk station in the Phoenix
area that is in stereo. I listen to them more than the others because of
that one reason. They realize I have two ears.
It makes sense to me to use it all the time. I always use two ears and
not just one.
