Long ago, if I had an audio amplifier, such as a guitar amp, running with
no audio input, I used to be able to hear a tone at the top of the hour. 
It was as if the local power company used it to set clocks or something
like that.  I haven't checked for it in years, though.

I finally got frustrated with all the extreme local line noise.  I drove
about a mile south of hear into a cemetary.  There I set up a 30-foot
longwire at the staggering height of almost 3 feet above the ground. 
Conditions were amazing.  I was about 200 feet from the nearest power
line.  There was absolutely no man-made noise.  I was in an unused area
of the cemetary, by the way.
