 CPC DX test Results

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Lynn Hollerman - gmhollerman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Here's the results of the most recent DX tests that have been received
here:

WILM-1450, Wilmington, DE tested Sunday, February 21, 1999 from
1:00-3:00 am ET:

Steve Francis of Alcoa, TN heard this test clear with code IDs around
1:07 and 1:14. Brian Douglas, in Greensboro, NC says this test was
easily audible at his QTH on a GE Superadio and Select-A-Tenna, with a
"European Police Siren" the was played in turn with Morse code. He
mentions that one particular set, at 2:37 and 2:38, was extremely
dominant. J.D. Stephens in Madison, AL mentions that same siren, saying
it cut thru the QRM really well - he heard the code IDs at marginal
strength, using a Kiwa loop on his Drake R8. Barry McLarnon in Ottawa,
ON, also picked up this test - he reports he heard it well at his QTH
starting around 1:05 with the siren, then the station faded, and
reappeared at 1:14, again with the siren and some strong code IDs.

WQSN-1660, Kalamazoo, MI tested daily thru February, 1999 with CW IDs at
the top of each hour:

J.D. Stephens of Madison, AL received(on 2/23/99) the following after
sending WQSN an e-mail:
"J.D.:
I apologize to you and everybody who's been attempting to "tune-in"
during our top of the hour ID with Morse code. I have downloaded a .wav
file for on-air use BUT have not gotten it on-the-air yet due to
internal difficulties in updating our Audio Vault plus our AM590 WKZO
transmitter site got "fried" last week when a power line went down and
made everything literally...hot!

I will get them on ASAP, probably next week. The good news...I'm going
to use the Morse ID for quite some time. By the way WQSN's Morse ID will
be around the top of the hour but not right on it. WKLZ and WKZO Morse
ID's will, for the most part, be just before the top of the hour; the
exceptions will be when we're doing live play-by-play sports.

Thanks again and I look forward to your reports when/if you're able to
get them.

1070 WNCT NC Greenville: Has gone to an all-Mexican music format.
Also, has been s/off at 2400 local for a while. No calls heard at
spot checks, but station name is La Favorita. Also, many
citations of "Norte de Carolina". Carolina= Ka-roh-LEEN-ah. Also
       "AM Diez- Setenta". (CAT/NC).
+NC, Greenville: Appears to be Mexican programming now 1500-2400
(s/off) EST. Still WNCT EE blah music 0500 (I think)-1500. IDs
"WNCT, Greenville" in EE on hour. Plays mostly Nortena (rapid,
percussion with accordions). Says both "Carolina del Norte" and
"Norte de Carolina", answering my questions is to which is the
correct SS name of this state (both). Many citations of
"Greenveel" (so, now we're Greenvull, Greenville, and Greenveel,
hi). Maybe this will last, as other attempts at XE format on
       WEED-1390 and WETC-540 are not daily. (CAT//WD9INP/XE/NC)

4TO Townsville has recently returned to AM 774kHZ. This is because of
the pocket terrain of their 102.3FM coverage area and poor signal into
parts of Ayre, Home Hill and Innisfail. Following a submission to the
ABA by 4TO requesting FM translators in these towns the ABA refused
anymore FM translators for five years. The re-licencing of 774 for
Townsville shows the purpose to be 'translator to re transmit 102.3FM'.
Another aspect taken into account was the cyclone season coverage. The
ABA had removed 774 from Townsville planning and allocated it to
Innisfail. This was offered at auction last year but there were no
takers and it was passed in. All interest was in bidding for FM
licences. 4TO 774 is running the same facilities as before with 5Kw and
null towards 3LO. This info direct from David Crane C.E. 4TO.

1110? Yes, it is Roseville with continuous "Indian Love Call"
interrupted occasionally by SS announcements mentioning
"Tri-Color". At 1344 EST 2/27 they IDed in English as "KRCX,
       Roseville-Sacramento."

***

**Richard Toebe - richtoebe@xxxxxxx

I've been checking 1110. As of around 2pm PLT, they're still playing
"Indian Love Call", and after every second play an announcer comes on in
SS and tells regular listeners to Radio Tricolor at 1110 to tune to 99.9
FM. (My SS is not that great but that's the gist of what I'm getting.)
No legal ID was heard on the hour. (I've noticed the ethnic stations
are pretty lax about that anyway, it took me a few days of listening to
1120 on the hour to determine that KZSJ had not changed calls when they
went to KK.)

**Albert Lehr - ALehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

KLIB-1110 Roseville, CA heard with ID at 1240 EST 03/02/99. They are
running a tape with SS music and announcements in EE and SS asking for
people to buy air time.

Disney on 640?

If what you're hearing is an image, then when you tune through 640
you'll hear a variable-frequency whistle. Otherwise, it may be a mixing
product. Are you using a barefoot receiver, or do you have a separate
loop ahead of it?

Here's a hyperlink for <A
HREF="http://disney.go.com/RadioDisney/map.html";> Radio Disney.</A>  You
have to scroll down the page to get the station listing, which doesn't
have call letters but otherwise looks like a good list to keep handy.

By the way, I don't know the mechanics of it but I remember decades ago
hearing about using 910 kcs as a factor in figuring images. Charley
Taylor, for one, could probably enlighten us on it, but I notice the
list showing a Denver station on 1550. 1550 - 910 = 640.

Hope this helps. I am sticking the R. Disney link into a database I
have going on radio lists. I found it by using <A
HREF="http://www.metacrawler.com";>Metacrawler</A> as a search engine and
just asking for Radio Disney. I have found other radio lists the same
way.

Craig: Saw your posting in AM DX Newsflash about your unid. R. Disney
affiliate on 640. The list below is straight off the Radio Disney
website, there is no affiliate on 640. I suspect your unid. on 640 may
be the 2nd harmonic of 1550 (caused by the normal 455 khz. harmonic in a
radio, 455 x 2 = 910, 1550 minus 910 =640 khz. Question: is 1550
definitely KDDZ and 1690 definitely KADZ still? They were supposed to
swap calls but never did apparently.... or did they?

After a very bad wind storm last Tuesday Night with winds over 100 MPH
in gusts, I got out and checked my Northern Beverage. After pulling the
wire from under downed trees and such, I got it up and running. Tonight,
KINY-800-Juneau and KTKN-930-Ketchikan are back with decent quality. So
it pays to check out antennas after storms. My Eastern Beverage gets
checked often as it is easier to get at running a foot or so above the
barbed wire fence, but the Northern one is in the underbrash wih lots of
Blackberry bushes. No matter what I do, I always come back with
scratches. But it is worth it. I gained 2-3 S Units by getting the
beverage back up to 5-6 feet. It was a real mess. High Level, AB Canada
530 with their 250 watts was running S9 dor a while too and CX aren't
really to great to the North tonight. With all the rain we have been
having the ground is really soaked so the Ground Rods are really doing
well too. So if you have anennas out there check them often, especially
after a storm.
