IRCA '99/DecalcoMania '99: The 1999 IRCA/DecalcoMania Convention will
be held at the Holiday Inn-Boardwalk Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on June

WTFDA '99: The 1999 WTFDA convention will be hosted in NW Jersey, July

RADIO FEST 1999 - Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun
The Ontario DX Association invites radio enthusiasts of all interests
and all levels to join us for Radio Fest 99. Following on the success of
our first Radio Fest event in 1998, this will be one of the major radio
listeners event of the year. Radio Fest 99 will also celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the Ontario DX Association, Canada's largest radio
listeners' club.
Dates: Friday, September 24 to Sunday, September 26
Location: Ramada Inn & Convention Centre, Oakville, Ontario (located
at Queen Elizabeth Way and Trafalgar Road)
Theme: "Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun"
Topics : Radio Fest 99 will look at "Where we have come from in
radio's past", "Where we are today", and "Where are we going in the
future".
Special Guests : There will be many and we'll introduce them to you
in future releases.
Exhibits: Equipment suppliers; clubs; technology from yesterday,

CJMS - St. Constant, Quebec 1040 kHz.
The station CJMS-1040 kHz. in St. Constant, Quebec, did go on the air
last Sunday afternoon at 3 PM. In speaking with one of the station
owners, Mr. Michel Mathieu, he told me that there was a reason for
coming on at this time. It marked the 45th anniversary of when CJMS,
then at 1280 kHz. in Montreal, first came on the air.
The station is on the air now, testing with their nighttime power and
pattern of about 1100 watts. They will only begin official programming
on Monday, May 10, 1999, presumably with the morning drive show. Check 5
or 6 AM Eastern. At that time they will be using their daytime power of
5000 watts.
The broadcast last Sunday included a brief discussion on air with
various people associated with the station, and contained a mix of
various French and English country vocals, and many instrumentals.
According to their proof of performance with the CRTC, they will have
to play 65% French language vocals, and of course, meet the 35% Canadian
content regulations as well (instrumentals are not part of this
equation). This won't be difficult to do, as the majority of the French
songs will also qualify as Canadian.
I do not have the details of the antenna pattern at this time, but I
hope to soon. The station will accept reception reports. They can be

Tampa AM changes
Effective at 0001 today, 1380 WRBQ became Disney format on completion
of sale to ABC. I am not hearing any call letter IDs, only 1380 Radio
Disney. I hope I don't have to spend a lot of time listening for a call
ID.
1010 WQYK is IDing as The Team with references to sports talk (this
was on 820 AM WZTM). They are still carrying Imus this morning, it's
probable they will adopt same format as WFAN NYC, which is Imus in AM
drive and sports talk the rest of the day.
820 is now IDing as La Nueva Mega, interesting that 760 WBDN still
doing the same Mega thing, at least for now. What I've heard so far,
they sound identical, this can't last...
Will check for call changes as I am able, also there are FM changes
here. More later.
After three days of barker tape loop "preparase...la nueva Mega" etc
plus EE bit advising listeners to find sportstalk on 1010, today
WZTM-820 is // WBDN-760 so I expect 820 to take over the Mega format of
"musica mas caliente" etc. I don't know what 760 will do yet. So far,
820 is still WZTM. I expect both freqs to change calls.
1010 WQYK (still this call so far) is The Team, Imus mornings, sports
talk other dayparts. Liddy, Don and Mike, Leykis, Bohannon have
disappeared from this market as far as I can tell. They will have the
Tampa Bay Bucs, Orlando Magic and NY Yankees game coverage. Tampa Bay
Devil Rays continue on WFLA-970. This gives numerous times when there
are 3 sports px at same time on local AM, since WDAE-1250 continues as
the Sports Animal
1380 Disney was still WRBQ on Monday. Haven't checked recently for
any call changes.
1470 WLVU Dunedin has not been hrd for several weeks, presumed
SILENT.
Couple of interesting newspaper columns recently from former air
persona lities one from 1010-Talks and one from 820 The Team discussing
the changes and their being displaced from airwaves... and yesterday Bob
Lassiter on 970 railing about the new work conditions being imposed by
new owners in a document handed to all employees , e.g. "you can't sue
us if we fire you without notice...we can sue you anytime we want...you
must be neat and have combed hair when you report to work..."

Wildcats on the Wildcats network. The Shockers were leading in
the 8th and scoring.

710 KGNC Amarillo, TX 0735 4/30 with ID and agribusiness news.
880 XETC Torreon, Chihuahua, MX with female ID and lots of ads about
news, IDs as Radio Mayran and announcing that they are in Stereo.
1390 KENN Farmington, NM 0130 5/2 with Art Bell and ID.
1550 KYCY San Francisco, CA 0030 5/2 ads for Geo. Strait concert in
Oakland and ads for "Y-93" these guys must be simulcasting an
FMer. KYCY-FM on 93.3.
1600t KMNY Pomona, CA 2244 5/1 with asian programming, possibly
Vietnamese. Wiped out by Mexican at 2256.

I heard 550 this morning coming in good. Are they ID'ing on hour as
KGME, or KOY? And what is 1360 ID'ing as on top of hour? I think 550
is still KOY, and 1360 is still KGME officially, I'll make a bet with
you....
Heard WTTM-1680 NJ. testing this morning about 2:30 AM, good signal over
WJNZ-MI., running loop tape of 'jock jam' songs (ESPN Jock Jams album),
and ESPN Sportsradio promotions, nice ID as "WTTM-1680, Princeton"...

550 is not off the air, they are on the air and I heard them clearly
this morning... I just wanted to know what their hourly ID is, and since
you told me 1360 ID'ed as KGME, by default, 550 is still KOY and hasn't
been granted the KGME call letters yet. Once 550 picks up KGME call
letters officially, then 1360 will be under new call letters...

is another Californian. It sounded like it was Vietnamese or maybe

This past weekend on 1610 khz I heard what was apparently a repeater of
a NOAA weather outlet. I noted mentions of Tri-Cities and The Dalles.
Anyone know the location? Reception favored taht area as I also heard
the TIS from Toppenish, WA (also on 1610) for the first time. A couple
of years ago I heard NOAA weather on 530 from Hanford, relaying the NOAA
VHF outlet in Pendleton, OR. Did it change frequency perhaps??

The Dalles is in North Central Oregon just across the Columbia River
from Washington, not near Tri-cities WA. The Dalles (Pop. 13,000) is in
the extreme north end of central Oregon on the Columbia River.
This TIS running NOAA weather on 1610 has been there for quite a while,
but no idea on the location except for the Tri-cities weather.

Couldn't help commenting on the Phoenix radio items in the 4/29
newsflash. As one might expect, the KOY-550 easy listening format was
quite popular in the Sun City West retirement community where we live.
The switch has been too recent for letters or phone calls regarding the
change to hit the local media but I expect that there will be a number
of unhappy people in our area when they finally figure out what happened
to their station. The 550 signal is strong here day and night. The
1230 signal is reasonably strong here during the day and, surprisingly,
not all that bad during the night (although I wonder about those with
less powerful radios). There are also a couple of alternatives for the
easy listening format in this area. One is KMYL (1190), who also has a
good signal here during the day but is not as dependable at night. Too,
KSAZ (580) has a good signal during the day but is inaudible at night.
(However, night may not be a problem here since many of the people seem
to retire around 8 PM.) There is also an easy listening FM station in
Prescott (never paid attention to the call; it's somewhere in the low
100 mHzs) that a lot of people listen to. This Prescott station and KOY
are often piped in to the Sun City West activity buildings, which also
should give an idea about the popularity of the format. Anyhow, once
the realization hits that one of their favorite stations has gone down
the tubes, it will be interesting to see what the reaction is. As a
side note, we've been in Sun City West (on the northwest edge of the
Phoenix metro area) about 2 1/2 years and find that Phoenix radio is
among the porest that we've encountered in any of the other places we've
lived. The radio programming is even better at our summer place in the
outback of Northern Minnesota!
