** ANGUILLA. DGS on 11775 was splattering beyond 11715, noted when
tuning in RKI via RCI at 1030 Sept 26 (Glenn Hauser, OK)
** AUSTRALIA. The 10-40 window is Africa and Asia between 10 degrees
North and 40 degrees North, where most of the people who have not
heard the Gospel live, i.e. most Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.

Good eeeevening East Timor!
Radio Triple J's Francis Leach has been enlisted to speak to
the peacekeepers.
Broadcasting from Melbourne, the host of the JJJ news and
reviews show Creatures of the Spotlight will send out a special hour-
long session, every night at 9.30 Timor time, on Radio Australia's
shortwave frequencies 9500 and 11660kHz. [1330 UT]
Leach's take on news, as well as interviews, music and messages
from home - to begin within a week - will complement an already-
expanded programming set directed at East Timor and Indonesia. And,
yes, that includes the footy finals.
But family and friends who want to send messages to troops in
East Timor via Leach will have to wait until the ABC and the
Defence Department work out the logistics.
Radio Australia has moved money around to fund the nightly
broadcast and plans to continue "for as long as we're in there
[with troops]".

** COLOMBIA. Last February we had an item from BBC Monitoring giving
websites for Colombian rebels and military. I recently rechecked them
and found that FARC, which operates all the Voces de la Resistencia,
at http://www.ucsd.edu/farc-ep/ no longer works; evidently the
University of California at San Diego decided it no longer wished to
be associated with them.
As for ELN, one does not reach them at
page http://www.voces.org but defaults to the server.
The army's web page http://www.ejercito.mil.co however, still exists
and is quite strange. It took several minutes to start loading with
opening animation initially unreadable of world map eventually
zeroing in on Colombia with a bit of music (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF

** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 4960.12: Radio Villa, 0310-0403. Following up
on Jay Novello's log, excellent signal here, with all bachata program
featuring "Los 5 Grandes de la Bachata!". Breaks for "Las Deportivas",
canned ID's and nice, nice music. This station will easily take the
place of Ecos del Torbes as favorite LA powerhouse if they keep

** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 4960: R Villa, la sencilla, announces 1480 in
addition to 4960; SW Reports wanted to Apartado de Correos 804, Santo
Domingo. Stn owner, Agr. (short for Agrimensor, meaning Surveyor)
Roberto Vargas, who also owns R Cima 100, may wish to find out if
distant foreign listeners really notice the ID change from "Cima" to
"Villa"? The number of reports may have dwindled considerably over
the years, and so he may wish to gauge the present-day impact of SW.
After all, he knows "the rules of the game" and how to produce
feedback from DXers. When R Cima surfaced on SW I talked to him on
the phone, and when he asked me how to get back to reporters - money
was no object, he said - I suggested a QSL-package consisting of a
card or a letter, "a pennant or something else". The eventual outcome
was a card and a letter, "a pennant a n d something else", actually
an anniversary coin, and, as an added bonus, a music tape. Whatever
reason there may be to the change of program feeder, I think we
should flood Surveyor Vargas with letters and friendly messages now

** ECUADOR. My German dictionary isn't handy, but I believe Hans-
Joachim is saying that he just heard from Rosiak of the HCJB German
department Monday at 2140 UT that the [unnamed] volcano is about to
erupt... Might be interesting to monitor HCJB this evening, English
from 0000 to 0700 on 9745, 12015, and 21455-USB also audible, with
news at 0100 and 0400, followed by Studio 9, the most likely times
they might say something about this.
The HCJB website, http://www.hcjb.org.ec has some general info on
Pichincha and another volcano, at least in the Spanish section, but I
don't see anything there about imminent eruption. (Glenn Hauser)

Above was a RIBOLD Extra issued at 0051 UT Sept 28.
The 0100 UT newscast Sept 28 explained: the mayor of Quito has raised
the alert status from yellow to orange, meaning an eruption of Guagua
Pichincha is possible in days or weeks. There is no need to leave
Quito unless one has respiratory problems. The yellow alert had been
in effect since last October. On Monday there were 1,542 seismic
events of low magnitude. Then I caught part of the news at 1200,
which said the stores in Quito been cleared of essentials such as
bread and milk. You'll recall that HCJB has an extensive contingency
plan in the event of an eruption or associated events, reported here
some months ago (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING)
** KURDISTAN. CLANDESTINE Voice of the People of Kuridistan presumed
the one on 6985 Sunday 26th, man in Arabic or similar 1720, brief
burst of music, mention of Kurdistan and Mujahed and further music
and talks. Fair signal on clear channel, distorted on AM but easy

** KURDISTAN. CLANDESTINE Voice of the People of Kurdistan has moved
to 6985 from 7000. 17.00 Id then Nx also on 4060 20 and 23 Sep

** LAOS. 6130: Laos National Radio Vientiane Sep 25 at 1300-1330,
Good reception with Musical Prog in English and Laotian presented by
man and woman, no ID but Vientiane has been mentioned many times.

** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI still missing from 9700 as of this morning (Sept
29), and 17675 isn't of any use out here during the wee hours of the
morning. As a substitute, I'm listening to Radio Australia around

** OMAN. 15140: R. Sultanate from Muscat heard on Sep 24 at around
1430; the program was in English. Unable to hear any ID as the
reception was poor and try again the next day - the reception was fair
1420 with English songs, 1425 the name of announcer was given as
"Geeta Madari" followed by details of to-morrow program as "Good
Morning Oman" then songs until 1430, then time pips and ID by man as
"Radio Sultanate of Oman in FM" followed by news bulletin - first
headlines, then in detail - ID at 1436 between the news, and it
ended at 1438, then followed immediately by talk by woman on people
of Oman; 1501 announcement by man and immediately followed by program
in Arabic (Mahendra Vaghjee, Mauritius, Sept 26, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING)
** OMAN Radio Sultanate of Oman heard Sunday 26th September, 1357
local music, 1400 identification as English service, gave FM
frequencies and announced 15140 as being directed to Europe. News
headlines, feature programme on local events, full news 1430, tuned
out, returned 1450, music to switch to Arabic service 1500 without
any closing announcements. Good signal but low level hum on

** OMAN [non]. Checked 15140 for reported English hour at 1400, Sept
24. Tune in at 1355 to find two or three equally weak signals
producing pronounced subaudible heterodyne, one of which was in
Spanish, and by 1405 this was building to dominate: La Voz de los
Andes, natch (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1005)

** SOMALIA. AYDID RADIO TO RESUME BROADCASTING
Text of report by Somali newspaper `Ayaamaha' on 29th September
Reports say that the Voice of the People [pro-Aydid] radio will
be back on air with effect from today [29th September]. The
radio has been off air for the past several months.
The management has been busy working on the rehabilitation
of the radio in the past few weeks. Reports also say all
necessary arrangements have been made and the radio is expected
to be on air this evening in the 49 metre band.

** U S A. WTJC was booming in on 9370.8 around 2350 UT 9/28 with
some pretty cheezy gospel music and occasional "FBN" network IDs.
Full ID 0000 "This is WTJC, Newport, NC, a member of the FBN Radio
Network..." Gave mailing address as 520 Roberts Road, Newport, NC
28570. (Randy Stewart, Springfield MO, WORLD OF RADIO 1005)
** U S A. WTJC, 9370.8, gave no ID at 0100 Sept 29, just IS and into
USA Radio network news -- the first choice of the far right for its
slanted coverage - with music and bible quotations at commercial
breaks; checking tape later, found WTJC ID in news commercial break;
0104 mentioned ``FBN'' and into network program; until 0200 playing
Amazing Grace on piano in minor key, really weird; 0200 sharp heard
full WTJC ID by woman with contact info, recorded to display on WOR
1005; 0300 again skipped any legal ID for USA news; recheck at 0920
was still on badly mixing with ute; 1120 check, some other religious
broadcaster was on 9370.0 in Spanish; that's the hour WTJC is not
authorized. 1202 WTJC came back with news; 1218 full ID again.
Congratulations on picking a frequency with so much interference!
Real pros at work and self-defeating yet another gospel huxter of
which we already have far too many on American SW. Checked the next
evening, UT Sept 30 around 0245, the carrier seemed to be on,
unmodulated, mixing with RTTY (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING)
** U S A. ABC PERSPECTIVE Sundays 1100-1200 on all three AFRTS
frequencies 4278.5 6458.5 12689.5 (Rod Williams, GA, Sept 26)
That includes essays by Hugh Downs, and retreads from TV's 20/20
** U S A. From Al Weiner Worldwide on WBCQ 7415, UT Sat Sept 25 at
0000: Per call from Mister Mike, new show with him and Tim Tron, Real
Radio, starts Oct. 16; will have guests such as FCC enforcer Riley
Hollingsworth. Didn't hear any time given, but that be on Saturdays.
Idio [?] Audio, weird music show starts next Friday at 6-7 pm [2200-
2300 UT]. Nathan Molley [?] World-Wide Request show from Radio Middle
East, Cyprus, this Saturday at 2000. R 510 Int'l temporarily takes
2330-2400 UT slot on Saturdays. The Allen Sane Show, with Ivan Sun
2030-2100 plays really good music. Will be bringing back The Album
Zone at a different time than before; and wants to get Gary Bourgois
back on, but not at previous Friday evening valuable prime time. Al
was retiring his hand tool bag which has accompanied him on many radio

** WALES [non]. Merlin has a new customer, seemingly all via UK
sites, Wales Radio International; just caught end of Sept 26 Saturday
1230-1300 broadcast on 17650 when they were giving weekly schedule,
also Fri 2030-2100 on 7235 (not 7325) and UT Sat 0200 on 9795 -- bet
that one is to NAm (Joe Hanlon, PA, enjoying his new communications
receiver, WORLD OF RADIO 1005)
RADIO-PORTAL
http://www.radio-portal.org is online since Sept. 2nd, 1999 on a
test basis, offering a portal site with search engine especially for
amateur radio, DXing, SWLing, Clandestines/Pirate/Satellite/Scanner.
Further features will be added during this month. Regular operation
starts on October 1st, 1999.
Why a new search engine - aren't there enough already? There are
several reasons for a special search engine which covers
selectively a special field of interest:
Usual search engines will bring only a small part of the URLs, as the
database may not cover certain items adequately. In August 1999, a
well known search engine brought exactly one hint for the search
"longwave"...
Radio-portal is going a new way. All data will have a close
connection to the field of interest, the URLs had been checked
manually and are being updated permanently. The search engine has
been developed especially for radio-portal, and it's fast! No frames
are used, so every page can be boomarked and saved on HD as a
personal address book, which, of course, can be updated any time.
