Sunday, November 7, 1999 - WGAI-560, Elizabeth City, NC will conduct a
DX test from 1:00-1:30 am EST. Tones of 1000 Hz and 800 Hz, as well as
Morse code IDs, will be used. WGAI will play station jingles between CW
IDs. The test will also be broadcast on their Internet audio feed, but
only on-air reports will receive a QSL. WGAI will be operating with 500
watts, directional pattern during this period. Station phone is

Sunday, November 7, 1999 - KMON-560, Great Falls, MT will conduct a DX
test at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 am MST. Following their
traditional station ID, a 1000 Hz tone followed by a Morse code ID will
be broadcast. KMON broadcasts traditional/modern country-western music
24 hours a day. KMON will be operating with their full power of 5000
watts at this time, with a directional pattern at 23 degrees to the

*****I *may* have a DX test on 890 from SC set up for us - but right
now, that's in the planning stage. The engineer, a Powell E. Way,
requests that some DXers listen for a station he works at - WKDK-1240,
in Newberry, SC . He says he's there on Sunday mornings, like at 5am
ELT. He'd REALLY like to hear from DXers - the address I have is 3000
Hazel St. (or P.O. Box 753) Newberry, SC 29108, with a phone # of (864)
276-3337 - the phone # is from the '97 NRC log, so it may be out of
date. Please give it a listen if you can!

Per phone call to Omaha (Bellevue) 1620 the call letters are still KAZP,
not KOIL as reported earlier. In my reception a few days ago, the ID on
the hour said "KOIL Bellevue", but it was not correct. Some IDs like
that have been given out, as they are going to be changing, but not as
yet. So as on 10/19/99 the calls are still KAZP.

Apparently the story is true. I called KBOI this afternoon and spoke to
one of the engineers. The previous owner made a deal with the owners of
KIRN-Simi Valley. The pervious owner gots lots of $$$ in return KBOI
lost their protection. It is like a new station was coming on in Boise.
KIRN are going to apply for at least 30KW to cover So. Cal with the
Iranian programming. Right now KBOI is operating with 12.5 KW nights ND
and about 5 KW days, while the guys are working on the new towers.
Within a couple of weeks the new 6 tower system should be up and
running. KBOI will still be 50 KW ND Days, but a mostly Northerly
pattern with 50 KW nights. So KBOI should have a good signal into
Europe.

KIRN is already too strong here days with 5 KW. Is the 30 KW to be full
time or just days?

I don't know. The eng stated 30KWer or higher, but he wasn't sure. KIRN
is supposed to be appling soon though. It may still be directional Days
with Orcutt & SF (660 and 680), but who knows. I don't remember if
there are any XEs near the border either on 670.

Conditions were moderately auroral, causing northern Europeans to be
poor. Best European signals were from Spain. Latin American signals
were numerous, though rare catches were not to be found.

Conditions continued somewhat auroral with strong signals from Spain,
Morocco, Algeria, Azores, and the Canary Islands. Latin Americans,
starting with Brazil, started rolling in right at sunset. By midnight
UTC, most of the best potential DX had been logged and conditions were
returning to more normal, with Canadians gaining strength. I was
dividing my listening time between DXing and the Red Sox - Yankees
baseball game on WEEI-850 (Sox won 13-1 ... yeah !)

Third Part - Will be conducted later this week on a sunset-period after-
work outing. This might be on Wednesday from Granite Pier in Rockport,

Some additional DX may be done from home in Billerica, MA if Norway-
1314 and the other high-band Europeans return over the next week.
A full-data log report for the entire Parallel Effort period shall be
e-mailed to various clubs, Internet listservers, and active DXers by
Sunday, 24 OCT. The report will also be accessible via the Newfoundland
I've posted some additions to the Newfoundland Dxpedition Page (URL
below) based on Jean Burnell's latest updates.
Significant are the following facts:
1. The DXpedition guys have heard Falklands-530 and Tanzania-1377!
2. Based on their information, a station I heard on Saturday night at
the Duxbury, MA site on 1062 kHz with apparent English talk of a
religious nature may well have been the Nigerian.
3. Bruce Conti's Maine DXpedition logs, plus an initial look at my
loggings are listed in a "Parallel DX Efforts" section of the Web
page.

spinning 60s oldies under KXOL. Some test tones starting around
0401. Steve Francis in Tennessee says the only tones he heard
were around 0401, and remembers one of the sentences I heard the
DJ say (and caught on tape), so I intend to send the station a
taped report. Not a good signal for 10kW non-directional and

1570 CA, Chula Vista 10/17 1218 Chula Vista Community Church
(on J St. near I-805 overpass) is still running a low-power
outlet for their drive-in church services (yes, drive-in church
services!). Took Doug Martin down to hear this unique station
before he leaves for Ohio in a few weeks. (TRH-CA)
1610 (WNUB568) CA, Chula Vista 10/17 1545 Station has been off for
much of October. Scratchy new TIS at San Ysidro border crossing
cluttering up the channel. (TRH-CA)
1610 (WNPF405) CA, San Diego 10/17 1545 This one is also off (it's
amazing how often Chula Vista and Balboa Park TIS stations fall
off the air around the same time each DX season). Unfortunately,
this year the San Ysidro mess is ruining the channel. (TRH-CA)
1650 CA, South San Diego 10/17 1600 The 0.1-watt US Customs
Service TIS at the Otay Mesa border crossing (about 9 miles East
of the more well-known San Ysidro crossing) appears to be gone
for good. The entire upper end of the radio dial is obliterated
by XEUT-1630, which is located immediately across the border in
the Otay Mesa section of eastern Tijuana (making it my closest
local). Last time I was out here, the Customs TIS was barely
audible under a booming KGXL. This time, not even KGXL could
slice through the XEUT slop. We checked to see if they changed
frequency, but no trace (and no signs; we drove all the way to

NEWFOUNDLAND DXPEDITION XIII
On the evening of 17 October, John Fisher managed to put in four or
five hours of DX before he left us to catch a flight to Germany. It was
worth it! This evening was decidedly auroral, and we enjoyed fabulous
reception of the Nigerian on 1062 kHz and the Mozambique station on 1206
kHz. Al Merriman has a tape of their ID at 2200 hours that is
incredibly clear. We scored some "new" catches from Argentina and
Uruguay later in the evening. Last evening (18-19 October) was not as
auroral, but not at all as good as the previous evening. In terms or
weather, it just changes for the worse. To day we are enjoying the tail
of Hurricane Irene, which is now just a deep depression. Nevertheless,
there are wind gusts up to 120 km/h, and there were snow flurries at
about 10 a.m. this morning (19 October).
Here are some of my highlights. As before, these are unchecked (no
tape review) in chronological order. I should have mentioned before
that times and dates are always UTC!!
1385.93 GUINEA 1957 17 Oct - Tedious African mx, "Le magazine du
dimanche" pgm from 2001, very good
765.08 SENEGAL? 2023 17 Oct - Weak African talk, language heavily
influenced by AA - sounds like 'em. This must be low power!
945 ANGOLA R. Nac. 2047 17 Oct - Strong in PP w/ speech, John Fisher
taped a nice ID on this.
1206 MOZAMBIQUE EP Inhambane 2102 17 Oct - SINPO 33443!! PP talk, some
instrumental mx, Al Merriman nabbed an ID at 2200 that should be

As I understand it, "true" Beverage antennas are terminated not just
to provide directionality but to achieve a relatively stable impedance
across the useful frequency range. Off-axis spurs are also reduced, too.
John Bryant and Nick Hall-Patch, in a Proceedings article some years
ago, plotted the impedance variations for a non-terminated Beverage
versus a terminated one. The difference was dramatic! The terminated
Beverage stayed much closer to the nominal 500 ohms from mediumwave
through much of HF.
Perhaps a non-terminated Beverage will experience greater impedance
swings with changes in ground conductivity compared to the terminated
type (i.e. wet winter weather vs. dry summer).
Signal strength improvement due to termination-improved impedance
matching is probably subtle, but a few dB here and there can add up in a
useful way when optimizing the entire antenna system.
I prefer to terminate Beverages during DXpeditions, but it is often a
real pain to hike out through the bush & swamp just to undo the
termination and retrieve the ground rod.
