OCB Director Herminio San Roman in boiling water for Radio Marti's four hour
delay in broadcasting news on the Elian Gonzalez raid.

Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB) Director Herminio San Roman had a meeting
on Tuesday with International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) and Broadcasting
Board of Governors (BBG) officials to discuss issues at the station among
them San Roman's sanctions against Radio Marti's UN reporter who was
supposed to cover a press conference of Congressman Bob Menendez (D-NJ). In
fact she did cover the event and has received Menendez' support on the
issue.

But the most important crisis issue of the heated discussion was Radio
Marti's four hour delay in broadcasting the news of the federal raid that
seized Elain Gonzalez on April 22. San Roman, accompanied by the Chiefs of
Staff of Representatives Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
(R-FL) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), was questioned as to why was there a
delay in reporting this news and his reply was that "no one was in charge"
to authorize the release of the news. However, sources at OCB challenge the
truthfulness of this statement and substantiate that the news editor of the
morning shift was told be Cristina Sanson, head of news, that she had direct
orders from Radio Marti Director Roberto Rodriguez Tejera not to broadcast
the news of the raid.

Radio Marti was beaten to the punch on this crucial news. The Voice of
America (VOA) broadcasted news of the raid at 5:25 AM, ten minutes after it
occurred and the BBC's Tom Gibb reported from Havana that Cuban domestic
radio began to broadcast the news an hour and a half after the raid.
