Just  a comment regarding the virus discussion lately: 

In the Swedish computer magazine "Mikrodatorn"  they gave a warning some time ago for attachment files. 

In short the following types of attachment files shall not be opened because they are executable files: bat, exe, js, jse, vbe, vbs, wsf and wsh. They can be opened only if you are sure they are harmless. 

For instance a pdf-file is not an excutable file and thus can´t harm your system.
