Subject: [NRC-am] CHRL Roberval on 910
Last night (7/26) I caught the top-of-the-hour ID for CHRL Roberval at
910 kHz. It was a two station ID; "CHRL Roberval, C??C ??" The second
station sounded like CHJC, CHGC, CFJC, or something like that. The
location sounded completely foreign to me. (I'm okay with Spanish, but
terrible with French.) Roberval is on Lac St. Jean, near other familiar
radio station locations like Alma, Dolbeau, Jonquiere, and Chicoutimi.
CHRL is on the Radiomedia network. IDs are at 00:45 and 00:00 every
hour; the top-of-the-hour ID is the only one I've heard with CHRL and a
second station. I couldn't find anything phonetically similar that made
sense in the NRC AM Log, FCC/CRTC databases, or the FM Atlas. Any
ideas?

For what it's worth, KOQI-1200 is "testing" with C&W music as usual
today 7/28 at 1600 EDT. I'll check them again tonight to see if they do
anything different in the evenings, but right now it sounds like
business as usual.

550 KARI Blaine: still mulling over whether or not to go through with
the power increase. The main culprit remains the nearby FCC
monitoring station.
850 KHHO Tacoma: still //KJR-950 but will split in November
950 KJR Seattle: new start date for 50kw from KHHO site is November 1
1070 KRAM West Klamath: is not on the air but will be about September 1
1300 KKOL Seattle: still 5kw U2. Their options are to move XR to KLFE-
1590 or KIXI-880 but they are having legal and technical
problems.
1600 KBLO Blaine: no construction yet but they definitely will be going
on the air. They will be applying for different call letters.
1680 KAZJ Seattle: They are still deciding on whether or not to go
through with it. I was told several months ago that they would
be applying for KSEA but I haven't seen that happen.
Other than KARI and KRAM, these issues have been hanging around for a
long time.

I recently responded to a posting by a Brazilian DXer who had picked up
some US X-band stations (Samuel Cassio, scm.s@xxxxxxxxxxxx). He sent me
back a listing of SA X-banders he's heard:
In Brazil we don't have stations in the X Band.
As for Argentina, I have logged these stations:
1610 R. Cantico Nuevo, Monte Grande ,Bs.As, religious program.
1620 R. Tropicana, B. Aires, religious program.
1630 Red 92 " 1630 AM Buen Ayre", pop,local mx, information
1640 R. Bolivia, B. As, religious program
1650 AM Restauracion, B. Aires, religios program
1670 BBC "Latin american service",via B. Aires
1680 AM Getro, Lanus, B. As,
I am particularly intrigued by the BBC relay on 1670.

Mark Connelly and I met up with the vacationing Ben Dangerfield for an
evening of DX from the Granite Pier site in Rockport, Massachusetts.
(The last time I saw Ben was when we met at the 1996 Newfoundland
DXpedition.) The DX was "the usual" for Mark and me, but for Ben it was
interesting to check out our car DX setups in action and hear all the
transatlantic activity. Although Spaniards dominated (I only took notes
on a few), it was still a good demonstration of what's possible for
midsummer DX from a coastal site. A brief scan back at Ben's ocean view
hotel in Gloucester, Massachusetts produced much of the same stuff.
Just before packing up for the night, Mark capped off the evening with
VOA Sao Tome on 1530. Perhaps the only disappointment was the lack of
any Caribbean and Latin American DX. Just as well, Ben was pleased to
hear all the strong Canadian Maritime and down-east Maine signals.

I just went through all WA stations as listed on the newly discovered
(thanks, Glenn Hauser) web site. It's an excellent reference point.
Comments:
(1) It looks like about 75% of WA stations have submitted current
information for the summer book. Arbitron uses old info in cases where
it hasn't been updated. Occasionally, these non-current stations have
changed formats.
(2) What stations list as networks invariably differs with the NRC
log. The stations seem to provide fewer networks than they are actually
using.
(3) I have yet to find any reference to a simulcasting station. Even
the KHHO/KJR situation is not shown.
(4) You have to get past the receptionist for network and facility
change info.
(5) Yes, the only way to access the file is by call letters. However,
unless you're on a GY frequency, it's not too demanding to throw guesses
at it trying to make the match. Listings also include the station's
county, which is sometimes helpful.
(6) It contains every WA station listed in the NRC log with the
obvious exception of KBLO-1600 and the Seattle CP on 1680.
(7) After you review a station, you (in this case, meaning the
owner/operator) have the option (via link) of E-mailing changes and
corrections to them. I haven't tried that but it's an interesting idea
having DXers update the stations for them (Arbitron)!
I just think it's another helpful tool as we pursue our hobby. I would
have to add that as a former broadcaster, it's the first time I've
experienced the joy of getting something free from Arbitron!

The initial version of my new article "Pennant Antenna with Remote
Termination Control" is now available at
"http://members.aol.com/DXerCapeCod/pennant.htm". It contains
descriptive text, circuit drawings, and data tables and graphs of test
results.
This article builds upon the excellent article "Flags, Pennants, and
Other Ground-Independent Low-Band Receiving Antennas" by Earl W.
Cunningham, K6SE, in the July 2000 edition of QST magazine.
What I have done is to provide a way to adjust termination resistance
remotely from the comfort and convenience of the operating position.
The need for doing this is made apparent by test data showing that the
null bearing may be moved to a certain extent by means of changing this
resistance.

SHORTWAVE-ONLY SCHEDULE AS OF JULY 27, 2000
Days and times strictly UT. RFPI announced July 17 that 6970 would be
off the air up to three weeks for repairs and mainenance, but that 15049

6970 return, it will presumably operate 0000-0800 (weekends -1200) as

I just received an interesting verie from WMAQ that might be of
interest. I already had a QSL card from the '70s, but wanted to get
another verification before they signed off for good.
"WMAQ radio is pleased to acknowledge your reception report dated July
21-22, 2000. Thank you for your report. We are always interested in
reception reports from afar.
"WMAQ Radio transmits from suburban Chicago, Illinois, USA with a
power of 50,000 watts at 670 kilohertz. Our main tower is 740 feet
tall. We have 3 transmitters. Our main is a Continental 317C, our
standby is a Harris MW-50 and our emergency backup is a RCA-5R4 5
kilowatt transmitter.
"Originally licensed in 1922, WMAQ became, by default, Chicago's
oldest radio station in 1934 when Westinghouse transferred the license
of KYW to Philadelphia. (WGN remained - and still remains - the city's
oldest station under its original ownership.) WMAQ celebrated its
seventy-fifth anniversary in 1997. WMAQ (We Must Ask Questions) was
originally licensed to the Chicago Daily News and the Fair Store (a Loop
department store). The station was purchased by NBC in 1931 (the
network's second Chicago acquisition) and remained a key NBC-owned-and-
operated station until General Electric (which purchased RCA, NBC's
parent, in 1985) sold it to Group W on February 1st, 1988. In 1996
Westinghouse changed its name to CBS Corporation, and with the spin-off
of the radio division, we are now Infinity radio, still wholly owned by
CBS/Viacom.
"WMAQ will cease to exist as of 7/31/2000. The call will change to
WSCR (now on 1160 kHz) and will be a sports/talk format. This will
leave only one all news station in Chicago, WBBM - which is also an
Infinity station."

Chicago's oldest radio call letters to leave airwaves
By JIM PAUL
Associated Press Writer
CHICAGO (AP) - The city's oldest radio station, where millions of fans
turned the dial to hear "Amos 'n Andy" and "Fibber McGee and Molly"
before television took over the night, is signing off this week for the
final time.
On Tuesday, the frequency WMAQ-AM has held for nearly eight decades
will become an all-sports station known as "The Score." Although WMAQ is
based in Chicago, it was broadcast across the country.
"When one of the top 10 call letters in the history of the medium goes
dark, it's a strong signal that times have significantly changed in the
industry," said Bruce DuMont, founder and curator of the Museum of
Broadcast Communications in Chicago.
WMAQ's demise stems directly from federal regulations and the marriage
of broadcasting giants CBS Inc. and Viacom Corp. Federal ownership rules
required that CBS subsidiary Infinity sell one of its eight Chicago
radio stations. The company chose to get rid of a weaker frequency used
by the sports station and move the sports station to the frequency held
by WMAQ.
The station is all news now, but in its early years it was home to
some of the most famous voices on radio.
Even its call letters had meaning - We Must Ask Questions. They were
chosen by then secretary of commerce and future president Herbert
Hoover.
WMAQ began broadcasting on April 13, 1922, as WGU under the ownership
of the Chicago Daily News and The Fair, a downtown department store
where the original studios were located.
Six months later, the Daily News bought out the store's share of the
station and renamed it WMAQ. NBC bought it in 1931 and boosted its power
from 250 watts to 50,000 watts, enabling the signal to be heard
nationwide.
Under NBC's ownership, WMAQ became the home of some of radio's most
famous stars: Red Skelton, Dave Garroway, Garry Moore and Hugh Downs
among them.
"Amos 'n Andy" premiered in 1928 and was broadcast each evening from
WMAQ's studios. "Fibber McGee and Molly" followed in 1935.
"Those were the big ones," DuMont said. "Amos 'n Andy was probably the
most important and most successful radio show of all time as far as a
series is concerned."
Over the years, WMAQ switched to easy listening and then country
music, but news always played a major role, said political reporter Bill
Cameron, whose 30 years at the station will end with the change.
"NBC News ran the local news department, and there was a big premium
put on a professional approach to doing the news," he said.
When the station was sold to Westinghouse in 1988, it changed to all-
news programming, putting it in direct competition with CBS. Then, in
1996, Westinghouse and CBS merged. "We still competed to keep each other
sharp, but it wasn't as keen as it was when Westinghouse didn't own
CBS," Cameron said.
Georgeann Herbert, who has managed the news operations of both
stations for the past year, said all-sports WSCR was chosen over WMAQ to
give the company one news station and one sports station, rather than
two competing news stations. It will mean the loss of about 60
employees.
In the newsroom, the mood has been glum, said Mo Whalen, a former
reporter for WMAQ. News reporters bristled as WSCR workers came in for
computer training and installed screen savers with photos of the new
station's personalities.
"I kind of liked the fact that there were two news stations. One was a
little more formal and one was a little less," said Whalen, who now runs
a public affairs program for another radio station.
Dave Sachs, a 47-year-old Union Pacific police officer from Chicago,
has relied on WMAQ for quick news fixes for years.
"That's all we need," Sachs said, a bit dismayed at the change.
"Another sports station."

For those curious, the last live programming on WMAQ was an encore 3-
hour edition of Cameron and Langford from 3-6 pm local on Monday. Bill
Cameron has been with WMAQ for 3 decades serving as city hall reporter
under various programming formats including at least 2 rounds of talk,
country and all-news/entertainment. Larry Langford has been with WMAQ
since the inception of all-news in 1988 serving as street crimebeat
reporter and prior to that had been with Westinghouse's WIND since 1978.
The Cameron-Langford show had been an hour long program airing at
various times highlighting "the city at work" and featured a contrast
with Cameron living in an affluent northern suburb and Langford a
lifelong inner city resident whose mother was a former alderman. The way
the 2 guys were talking, it sure sounded like they had another gig lined
up or at least were interested infinding one. Surprisingly, the show
worked quite well though, prior to first doing the show several years
back, neither had any experience in doing talk. The show was retired
and brough back a couple of months back to fill in the noon hour when it
was no longer possible, due to staff departures, to continue with the
midday business news hour.
