** BHUTAN. Dear Glenn, I'm back from the cool and wonderful land of
dragon, to this hot, humid and noisy town of Tokyo.

According to recent editions of weekly newspaper Kuensel and my
monitoring, Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) has the following
program in English: News at 1200 for Mon-Fri, 1000 for Sat/Sun;
Public Service Announcement at 1210 (or 1010 for Sat/Sun) and
the day's pgm at 1215 (or 1015 for Sat/Sun)

Monday    - Education calling teachers;
Tuesday   - About town or music program;
Wednesday - Religious program "Shamatha Yoga" by Dzongsar Khentshe
           Rinpoche;
Thursday  - UN radio program "UN Calling Asia";
Friday    - Bhutan this week;
Saturday - Music countdown "Bhutan Top 10"
--- I wonder how they select the ten songs?;
Sunday    - Weekend request show.

Weekday's program has 15 minutes or less, and the rest is filled with
music.

According to the anmt, the station has two e-mail addresses:
- bbsnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx;
- bbsmusic@xxxxxxxxxxx (or bbsmusic@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?).

FM service has been extended cover the western part of the county.
It is reported that the Danish Government has been cooperating for
construction of a national FM network. I wonder if the former 92MHz
for back up STL has been replaced by 96MHz or not:

- 96 MHz for Thimphu
- 88.1 MHz for Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Wandue and Gasa
- 98 MHz for Chhukha, Phuntsholing and Samtse

** EUROPE. Congress approves plans for Europe-wide Romany radio, TV
Excerpts from report by the Czech newspaper `Lidove noviny' on 1st
August

Romanies are looking for ways towards the official recognition of
their nation. Their own Europe-wide radio and television should
assist them in this search. According to estimates, the Romany
language could be heard in the ether within a few years. Both media
should be based in Prague. This was one of the agreements reached by
the fifth world congress of the International Romany Union (IRU),
which was held in the Czech capital last week. "Indeed, we are
contemplating setting up uniform radio and television broadcasting
within the framework of Europe. Of course, broadcasts would not be
round-the-clock initially but for only a limited time," Jarmila
Balazova from the Dzeno association, spokeswoman for the IRU
congress, confirmed to `Lidove noviny'.

According to Balazova, the publishing of a Europe-wide periodical
written exclusively in the Romany language is under preparation as
well. "Romanies could exchange information on what is happening in
their countries, on cultural and political events. In view of our
long-term efforts to attain the recognition of the Romany nation,
Europe-wide media are indispensable for us," Balazova explained...
The [International] Romany Union intends to ask the Radio Free Europe
radio station for the provision of space for broadcasting. It is
precisely within the framework of Radio Free Europe that an all-
European Romany editorial office could be established in Prague.

Talks with representatives of the Washington-based Voice of America
radio station are already under way. The Radio Free Europe management
does not know anything about this yet. "No one has approached us so
far. There exist no specific plans to set up a Romany editorial
office within the framework of Radio Free Europe," said Sona
Winterova, spokeswoman for Radio Free Europe, in response to the
Romany Union's plan. It is primarily the lack of funds that
complicates the establishment of Romany radio and television. Another
problem is that, thus far, there exists no uniform shape of the
Romany language... Source: `Lidove Noviny', Prague, in Czech 1 Aug 00

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. This item is from 'The National' newspaper on
Tuesday 1 August:

A NEW radio station to cater for Motu and English speakers was
launched yesterday by Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta. FM Central
89.9 will broadcast 24 hours a day in Motu and English with focus on
local news and events in Central province and NCD. The station, owned
by nationally owned Hirad Limited (short for Hiri Radio), aims to
promote regional broadcasting and can reach a potential audience of
500,000 people. It will operate out of Pacific Place in downtown Port
Moresby. Hirad Limited is a company registered in PNG for the purpose
of developing regional broadcasting within the country. In his speech
broadcast live, Sir Mekere said the radio station wanted to provide a
quality service that included a wide variety of music, educational
and cultural programming, and comprehensive news coverage.

"I'm sure FM Central will be a success. To all residents of Port
Moresby and Central province who can receive the station, happy and
enjoyable listening," Sir Mekere said.. Chairman Gerea Aopi said the
radio station was aiming at the Motu speaking market for now. Mr Aopi
said that Hirad Ltd had been granted a commercial radio license by
PNG Telecommunication Authority (PANGTEL) for the operation of FM
Central 89.9 and other stations in the Central province and National
Capital District. He said the station cost about K1 million to set
up. (via Matt Francis, EDXP via DXLD)

Thus, the new FM station in Moresby is distinct from the NBC-operated
(sometimes) Radio Central on 3290, although there are plans for the
privatisation of the NBC in future. (Matt Francis, Canberra, EDXP via
DXLD)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. R Central has not been heard on the West Coast
Thursday-Sunday mornings. Not even a het on this frequency. However
there was a UTE just below. 4890 **was** off Sunday morning PST
(1100-1300 UTC) but 9675 **was** on at this time (Don Nelson, OR,
July 30, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 5985 strong level with local educational
programming in English for schools, believed to be from Rabaul. This
has long been inactive and appears to have been fired up again! Sked
may well be *2230-0700*. I move further north to Port Douglas
tomorrow, about n60 km up the coast. Be good (Bob Padula, Cairns,
Australia, July 31, EDXP via DXLD)

** U K. A special BBC SW frequency for the Last Night of the Proms,
Sat Sept 9 1800-2200 UT is: 7320. Includes world première of Gerard
McBurney`s new orchestration of Jazz Suite No. 2 by Shostakovich (Sue
Faulkner, BBC via Ivan Grishin, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Hi Glenn-- Do you know if WTJC is still on 9370? I haven't
tuned in to any rx stns as of late but I did not hear them from 2200-
2400 last night (8/2/00) (Liz Cameron, MI, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

No word of any frequency change received here, and can`t say I have
missed them, but since you asked, never heard at spot checks various
times of day. I suppose they are off with some problem (Glenn Hauser,
OK, August 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
