Driving instructions from Billings Logan International Airport to the
Quality Inn.
The airport is about 15 miles from the convention hotel. It will take
about 20 minutes driving time. There are numerous ways to get there, but
here's the quickest. The airport is up on a high cliff over looking
Billings. Bob Hope joked that it's the only city he has been to that
after the plane lands you can still parachute into the city.
When you leave the airport parking lot you will be driving down a
steep hill to the downtown area. You will take the "City Center - 27th
Street" lane. At the bottom of the hill you will go past Montana State
University-Billings. Get into the right lane as soon as you can. Stay on
North 27th heading south driving past the hospital/medical area until
you get to 6th Street West. You will be turning right from 27th onto 6th
Street West. The corner has an Albertsons on the left with a Holiday gas
across the street on the left, and a Conoco gas on the right with a US
Bank across the street on the right. 6th is a ONE WAY 4 lane street
heading west.
On 6th Street West you will need to be in the 2nd from left lane of
the 4 lanes. You will be heading west for a few blocks. Two of the lanes
from 6th split right onto Grand Avenue, and two split straight onto
Division Street. You will be going around a corner putting you onto
Division. Your lane will turn into the right hand lane of Division
Street. You will now be driving south on Division. You will come to a
large intersection that adds another right lane that turns onto
Broadwater. You will want to stay in the lane that says "Montana
Avenue." Stay on Division going straight past this Broadwater
intersection. You will go about ½ block and Division will end. You will
be forced to turn onto Montana Avenue taking you west.
On Montana Avenue you will want to stay in the right hand lane. You
will drive along Montana and go up over an overpass which goes over
railroad tracks. When you come down from the overpass you will now be on
Laurel Road. Continue heading west on Laurel Road until you get to the
King Avenue West exit from Laurel Road. This takes you up onto an
overpass. Turn right onto King Avenue West and immediately get into the
left lane as you will be turning left very quickly. If you look to your
left you will see 4 hotels including the Quality Inn.
You will be at the intersection of King Avenue West and 20th Street
West. You will know you are at the correct intersection as to your right
will be a Holiday Gas station and to your left will be a Yellowstone
Bank. Turning left at this intersection actually puts you onto Overland
Avenue. You will drive past the Outback Steakhouse and in front of you
will see the Quality Inn to the left.

As promised, testing for the new WWLG, Baltimore will be starting
soon. Tune to 1630khz (sic - should be 1360) (authorized 8/15-9/15)as
they evaluate signal coverage. The new 50kw Harris transmitter and all
new gear was installed this past weekend. This testing will initially be
non-directional. Look for a final move to 1370KHZ daytime only, 1360KHZ
nights. (August 15, 2000)

***Bill Hale - phantom2@xxxxxxxx

Our first DDXD-West report of the new call letters on 1160 in Chicago
comes from Christos Rigas of suburban Wood Dale. His report is as
follows:

1160 WXRT IL, CHICAGO 8/15 0859 ET, "WXRT AM and FM" ID given,
followed by news, sports and rock music. Since 8/15/00 local
midnight, this frequency carries WXRT (FM 93.1) programming. The
calls are WXRT AM, while the calls on 670 kHz officialy became
WSCR as of this day also.

So for those of you who log call changes, be listening for that, as
chances are it'll be changing as soon as they can find a buyer for the
frequency.

  1. In the August issue of the WTFDA's "VHF/UHF Digest," DXer Alexeis
Marrero Cruz of Holguin, Cuba says he heard "Radio Holguin, la nueva" on
its first day of broadcast on 1500kHz and 96.1 FM. This was in May.
Perhaps someone on the East Coast is in a position to hear this.
  2. Bryan Hubert, DX-friendly CE of KCIS-630 Edmonds, WA, says the
53w/2300w powers some of you have read about are "last resort" auxiliary
facilities only.
  3. KJR Seattle has had a CP for 50kw on 950 for quite a while. They
are co-sited with co-owned KHHO and apparently had a little more work to
do keeping the respective signals clean than they anticipated so won't
be on with it until November. They remain on with 5kw at the old site
for the time being.
  4. KMJ-580 Fresno was also recently granted 50kw but I can't recall
if is for both day and night. KQQQ-1150 has reapplied for 25kw non-D
days out of Pullman. I think the most senior regional with a 50kw grant
is KFWB-980. I haven't seen their day pattern but you have to wonder
what with Santa Barbara on 990 and Bakersfield and Coachella on 970,
where they can send it except to the south. And then there's KXTA-1150
with 50 day and 44 night and WTMJ-620 with 50/10. Nearly all of them
have had to go directional daytime.

I'll say it's strange about the TIS on 1700, formerly on 830, at Penns's
Landing in Philadelphia. I am not getting a peep out of them, either on
my KIWA loop or on my outside slopers although we are about between 10
and 15 miles away while I would think you must be at least 20 miles
away. They were semi-local on 830. I do get a fulltime noise above
1600that doesn't help matters although I get good signals from all the
X-Banders, and I have been getting the Kennedy Airport station on 1700
plus all the regular stations on 1700. Have any others in this area
heard this TIS ?

Heres the laundry list:

Superadio III's:

I have two of the SRIIIs for sale. One has the word "Superadio" on the
front missing. It came off 100% during cleaning, otherwise its like it
was new. The other is complete and fine.

GE Superadio III 7-2887 It is all there and all working. It has the dial
calibrated as close as possible and works just fine. Have 6 D cells when
it gets to your house for clean operation or plug it into the wall. AM
/FM radio, black in color. Great on MW, good on FM. It runs a VERY long
time on a set of batteries and sounds better than any other mono radio I
have ever owned.

Price: $30 +$7 shipped in the USA. Canada may be a little more. The
price is firm.

Radio Shack 12-656 TRF: [ a real good set ]

Radio Shack Realistic model 12-656A TRF radio. Working well and pretty
sensitive. Black / tan color. AM only. Uses 4 C cells or AC.

Price: $30 + $7 shipped in the USA. Canada may be more. The price is
firm.

I am not quitting DXing or anything like that, so don't ask. I just
have lots of radios and don't use them. These are spares I have
collecting dust. I am considering buying another radio but haven't
decided yet. I figure there would be someone out there that can use them
and would pay less than at the store or on e-bay where the price is bid
way up so you can't afford to buy it.
Ping me at lwdxer@xxxxxxxx if you are interested. First person who
asks will get the first shot at it. I'll wait a week to see a check or
money order and if I don't see it, then it goes back out for sale. If
you live close enough and can pick it up, you can save on the shipping.

TRIO 9R59DS Kiwa Loop.

Been a bit slack lately but, no new from Australia, however here is some
claification.

Radio Italia is owned by the Italian newspaper group. Here is the
uptodate Italian stations in Australia.

1629 Adelaide
1629 Brisbane
1629 Darwin
1620 Canberra
1611 Griffith
 all above are 400 watts
1593 Melbourne is 5kw
1575 Wolongong is 200 watts
1539 Sydney is 1kw
 801 gosford is 5kw

Expected on air within the next 6 months is
1620 or 1629 Perth 400watts
1296 1kw Albury

FM
Atherton 99.1 2kw
Ingham 96.9 400 w
Mildura 89.1 200 watts

All reports still come to me as does 2AM on 1620 this also is
confusing as do carry various language programs such as voice of
Islam....
Now further to the Australian Radio DX club, we have produced a medium
wave guide 2 months ago and we have reprinted stocks for a lousy US10-
00. You will also get automatically at the end of this year an update
for free.
Pat Martin gave us a great rap for the guide... so if you want one
send $10-00 banknote fine...(haven't lost one yet in the mail). cheques
cost US14-00 to cash here in Australia... so no cheques... to John
Wright, Unit 4, 33 Kerrie Cresent, Peakhurst 2210 NSW, Australia.
