     10/13/00 Fri - 0655-1200 - 1584 - Goteborg SWEDEN
     10/14/00 Sat - 0600-0800 - 1584 - Goteborg SWEDEN

153 transmission
Due to late arrival of some important parts for establishing the
programme feed to Ingoy, the planned special broadcast will be
postponded slightly. It's now been scheduled to take place on FRIDAY 6TH
OF OCTOBER between 1900 and 2300 UTC.
The transmitter was put on the air yesterday at half power (50 kW) and
should now be operating at full power 100 kW. Until the studiofeed is
ready during next week, the transmitter will relay NRK P1 (including
regional programmes from NRK Finnmark). As soon as the studio feed is
OK, programme will be switched to NRK Europakanalen (// Kvitsøy 1314
kHz) but with regional programmes from NRK Finnmark as well.
This will give you an opportunity to listen to 153 kHz from now on,
and be fully prepared for the special show to be broadcast in English
and Norwegian on friday the 6th. A special QSL-card will be available
for correct reception reports to that broadcast, and we plan to mail
them from Ingoy with the postmarks of the local Ingoy postoffice. A
goodie for you stampcollectors as well!
Until the coming friday, feel free to give us a status-report on how
you receive the signal!
  Updates on http://www.dxlc.com/longwave/ingoy.html

In connection with the 75th anniversary of radio in Sweden, there will
be special broadcasts from a 150 Watt transmitter in Göteborg on 1584
kHz on 13 & 14 October. There will be relays of Sveriges Radio P4 and
special announcements acc. to this schedule: 13 October: 0655-1200 UTC,
14 October: 0600-0800 UTC. There will be first test transmissions on 8
October between ca 1500 and 1800 UTC.

For those who can read Swedish, please find a full description of the
activities in the posting below from the SWEDX mailing list, 5 October:

I HEARD IT....

1180 WJNT MS, Jackson, several fairly clear Morse Code IDs from
0100-0107 EDT 9/30, just before Coast to Coast AM. Was
surprised to hear this with the Cuban blatting away with KOFI
        and KLAY in there. (PM-OR)
+Sporadic code noted under WHAM and the Cubans, sure doesn't
sound like 50 kw ND. (Steve Francis/NRC)
+Got up at 0125, hrd Coast to Coast AM about equal to Rebelde
at best, sometimes much weaker, 3 cw IDs at 0130 break, could
not understand the local cutaway, only IDed via CW. Not an
especially good signal, for 50kw. RX a Radio Shack DX399
portable, no ext ant. In Tampa FL Bob Foxworth/NRC.
+Being so close to WHAM, I had my doubts about hearing WJNT...
also, they are in almost exactly the same direction from me,
so nulling WHAM wouldn't help much. However, I tried tilting
my loop way up to try and get a high-angle null on WHAM while
letting WJNT slip through underneath... maybe it helped. I
had a hint they were there shortly after TOH when I noticed a
pronounced echo on the CBS newscast from WHAM. Sure enough,
there were several CW IDs from WJNT that came through clear
as a bell after the news, along with ads and other talk that
was hard to decipher. MS is never an easy catch from here
(1183 miles from WJNT), so I was happy to log this one (but
I'm still bummed that I never heard WGSR-1570!).
        (Barry McLarnon/NRC)
+9/30 0200 Tuned in toward the end of the test period and
heard a very clear, fast morse code "WJNT" right before the
top of the hour. Way under the Cubans in KERI null. There's
no way this was 50kW non-directional. New MS #2.(Tim Hall-CA)
+For location and equipment shortcomings I figured logging the
test on air wouldn't be possible so I went to the WJNT
website. Very nice, an interesting program crystal-clear.
I'll contact Mr. Stan Carter with many thanks. Good DXing
from Bill in Cave Junction, OR. (William Flynn-OR)
+9/30, 0100-0200, DX TEST, after reviewing my tape, got a
strong code ID right after 0100 under/over KOFI. Going to
        send taped report. (Frank Aden-ID)
+Surprised to hear this in southern Alberta too, with Cuban
pounding in as Pat noted, and also the pest from Montana,
KOFI. Only definite items I noted were the code IDs prior to
        0107 and again after 0130, but I'm still happy, as that's a
new state for me. (Nigel Pimblett-AB)
+extremely faint code POSSIBLY heard at 0200 (a few seconds
before) 9/30. Will have to check the tape on this one now
that I know code was heard then (and YES, I DO DX).
        (phil bytheway-WA)
       +Caught only the Morse id's at 0105, 0130, and 0159/0200 ET. Also
caught an echo on the CBS newscasts at the top of the hour. WHAM
and the Cuban station dominate 1180, so I was happy just to hear
the CW id. My receiver is a Magnavox D2999, an inexpensive
shortwave radio, augmented with a Select-A-Tenna tunable loop
for AM reception. I'm in New Brunswick, NJ, smack dab in the
middle of NYC and Philadelphia, so a huge chunk of the AM band
is virtually inaccessible to me. (David Hochfelder/NRC)
       +Used a Sony STR-AV570 receiver w/ RS Loop - Lots of WHAM;
nothing underneath. Used an Aiwa CSD-ED26 "boombox" w/ supplied
antenna (and seperately w/aforementioned RS Loop) - Also, lots
of WHAM; SS underneath. No Morse. (Blaine Thompson/NRC CPC Guy)

Per a phone call from Gary Jackson in Sacramento CA, the CP for Burbank
on 1500 kHz will be testing not on 1500, but on the X Band freq. of 1690
in late October or early November 2000. He spoke to Ed Stokes at Quad-
104 who is putting the tests on. The station will be testing with 1KW
ND, but only daytime. He did not mention the hours, but maybe the signal
will skip at LSR or LSS if the tests are going on as there isn't much on
the channel in the West, except a TIS or two. The TIS in Culver City on
1690 will only be operating nights during the KRCD tests.

According to Radio B2-92, the station is not going to continue their
relay on 1188 kHz, because the Marcali site in southwestern Hungary does
not provide sufficient coverage of the area which they are targeting at.
However, the station would confirm reception reports for the test
transmissions on 1188 kHz during the past days. The email address is:

In an e-mail reply to my reception report to LBH Radio, Frenton-on-
Sea, Essex, UK which was testing Sept. 27 at 2200-2400 UTC from
Kaliningrad on 1386 kHz, Ray Anderson wrote today that LBH Radio will
start regular broadcasts on that frequency tonight at 2300 UK time (2200
UTC). Their e-mail address is engineering@xxxxxxxxxxxx

There's a station on 1630 carrying the Westwood One feed of Monday Night
Football. I missed the TOH ID at midnight EDT, but the call sign
definitely started with a W. Good signal, about even with KCJJ right
now. I'm pretty certain this would be WAWX in Augusta GA.

**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Heard on DX-440 and RS 18-1533 loop:

870 WWL LA, New Orleans 0151 10/2 with C&W playing an old Merle
       Haggard song, "The Farmers Daughter".
1130 KSDO CA, San Diego 0900 10/2 This is not supposed to happen. I
had a reverse Murphy to have this happen and it was real unusual.
I had two stations with Bloomberg news fighting it out. First I
got an ID for KSDO and it faded and about 5 seconds later I got
an ID for CKWX in Vancouver, and then it all got drowned out by
the Mexican national anthem and an ID for XEETCH. This is kind of
like getting an unassisted triple play in baseball.
1220 KBZS CA, Palo Alto 0910 10/2 with business news and ID, "Business
Radio 1220". This one carries the Bloomberg Morning Show.
1260 KJAZ CA, Los Angeles with ToH id and website of what sounded like
       KJAZZ.net. [ new ]
1330 KLBS CA, Los Banos 9/30/00 0900 with old fashioned s/o in EE then
ID and FCC information then repeated in SS. It was kind of a
throwback and nice to hear since its so rare. Brought back
memories of DXing about 25 years ago.
1360 KPOP CA, San Diego 9/30/00 0912 with ID then playing "Johnny
Angel" and then ID "Thirteen sixty, K-POP".

Heard on a Chrysler AM stereo 4469088 car radio and 6 foot helical
coiled vertical antenna:

1130 KWKH LA, Shreveport 10/1 2235 with ID "Country Gold, 1130 KWKH"
1170 KVOO OK, Tulsa, 10/1 2240 with "The Horsin' Around Show" with BJ
       and in excellent AM stereo.

600 WMT Cedar Rapids, Iowa on 600 kHz at 9/30 6:25 AM Eastern (1025
UTC) with local show promos, IDs, into 6:30 AM news, with 5:30 AM
time check. Lots of stories from eastern Iowa, and many IDs. Good
       signal

I am hoping to reach my 1000th station logged on mediumwave this DX
season. This total does not include call letter changes. The WMT logging
was number 983 in my log. Not far to go now.

Our DXpedition was a follow-up to the relatively large gathering at
Grayland, Washington USA last June, when a total of 13 DXers gathered at
the Pacific coast for up to a week of continuous foreign MW and
shortwave DXing.
The DXpedition's "antenna farm" is bordering the Pacific Ocean and
adjacent to a modest motel unit. The motel's manager is very
accomodating to our various antenna antics, and we are careful not to
disturb any other motel guests so that we can ensure future DXpeditions
at this location.
This DXpedition was scheduled for the fall equinox DX period, and it
coincided with a stretch of excellent weather-- clear skies, cobalt blue
ocean, and temperatures around 72 deg. F (20 deg. C) each day. In
attendance over the three primary nights of DXing (9/22-24) were John
Bryant, Don Nelson, Walt Salmaniw, Joe Talbot, and Guy Atkins. Chuck
Hutton joined us for Saturday evening.
Other DXers (including Patrick Martin of Seaside, OR) joined us for
Saturday afternoon's informational discussion, which included photos and
commentary from Joe about his years spent traveling throughout 50 of 52
African countries; various reports on receivers and DXing software; use
of Minidiscs in DXing; and a number of DX tips and techniques. Another
highlight of the weekend was an excellent Greek meal at Anthony's
Restaurant in nearby Westport, WA.
I've posted a 360-degree, panorama photograph of the Grayland
Dxpedition "antenna farm" at my website. It was assembled in software
from nine separate pictures taken with a Olympus D-460 Zoom camera, and
compressed in file size as much as practical. Due to the large file size
(404KB) it is a ZIP file available for download only. The photo has been
touched up in Adobe Photoshop 5.5 to add comments (!) and to make the
antenna wires more clearly visible. It may be downloaded from:
http://www.nwlink.com/~gatkins/download/gray360.zip
The ZIP file will expand to a JPG file, viewable in any web browser or
"paint" program. Scroll the picture left and right to take in the full
view!

Re: Sky Radio broadcasting in Dutch on 666 kHz. As I had heard R
Sombor earlier here, I asked them if they were relaying it. And the
answer was yes. They relay various programmes until they are able to
start a night programme of their own.
Mr. Ivan Beretic of Radio Sombor also wished for any kind of musical
contribution (empty or recorded CDs) to the programmes of Radio Sombor
and promised to mention the contributor in their programmes. So if you
send a report, that is a nice way to help this very DX-friendly station
and keep it friendly towards us in the future, too.

Is there some kind of law in Mexico requiring all radio stations to
play the national anthem at 1100 UTC? I've heard the Mexican anthem at
this time on XEX-730 and XEQ-940. It wasn't part of the sign-on
announcement, as these stations are on 24 hours. Don't know the tune of
the Mexican "himno nacional"? For midi versions of national anthems, go

(I have also heard the Mexican NA on several NSP stations at this

10/1. Tonight I heard a weak English language station on 1350 kHz. It
is most probably another UK LPAM RSL station. It was very weak and I had
some difficulties in identifying it. I have put some recordings online,
but it is possible that these recordings still can't give a definite
answer about the identity. I think that the RSL station was relaying
another network programme.
The first recording (88k) was made on Sept 30, 2338 UTC. It goes more
or less like this: "Radio ... is ..... live special broadcast and
presenting ... ..." http://gallery.uunet.be/gs/real/Unid1350_1.rm
The second one (52k) was heard on Okt 1, 0000 UTC . Probably the
following was announced "Live on satellite broadcasting UK, This is the
CB broadcast network -time pips - It's one o'clock on newsnail (?), ..."
http://gallery.uunet.be/gs/real/Unid1350_2.rm
And lastly, I've captured also some advertising (143k) that was on the
air right after the IRN news, and it might give you a hint about the
broadcast region. http://gallery.uunet.be/gs/real/Unid1350_3.rm
Maybe this mystery can be solved with a little help from you guys.

A few moments ago I stumbled over a station on 1503 kHz with good S7.
Normally this channel is almost empty during daylight time here. At
first, I thought it was a pirate station because they are a little bit
off frequency. In fact it is 1503.03 kHz. But they were quick to
identify themselves as Radio Caroline on air with a RSL license. I
haven't checked yet today if this operation is listed on the
radioauthority WebPages, but a few weeks ago there was no such entry in
their future RSL's list. Direction finding points -as expected- to the
Essex coast.
ID with position at 1400 UTC. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to
that announcement because I thought that I was recording it. But my
minidisk was full. I'll try to catch it again next top of the hour.

Just received this message from Larry Holtz, Dir. of Engineering,
Portland. They have now a webpage and streaming audio. This is quite
unique for a cue station. In fact it is the only one I know.
In the mean time, this info is added to my webpage.
"Dear Guido -
Thank you for listing and updating your Studio Feeders web page. I am
the chief engineer of KGON-FM, Portland, Oregon, USA, and we operate
KPM556. I want you to know that we have added internet streaming audio
to the feeder, and we invite anyone to listen to it. It uses WinAmp or
a similar player, and it is listed in the www.shoutcast.com directory.
When we don't have a particular studio program on the feeder, we send a
reggae music format with the KPM556 ID. The stream can be heard at

Mark Connelly has modified my DL2 phaser into a DXP-3A [his name for it]
and it is much easier to work while phasing nicely. Also, it does not
seem to be picking up the spurs and station mixes that I got on the DL2
and the MFJ-1026 which is apparently unfixable. And the DXP-3A is
getting stronger signals than the KIWA loop on the low end and X-band. I
am using the new phasing unit with my 4 outside slopers. Haven't had
much of a chance yet to try it out on TAs as they haven't been too good
the past few days.

The following story first appeared in the Rock Hill, S.C. Herald
newspaper on 09/30. Besides WBZK, other stations in the radio group
running Spanish programming are listed.
"York Radio Station to Pick up Spanish-Christian Format
York, S.C. -- A Virginia radio group has purchased York radio WBZK 980
AM and will convert programming to a 24-hour Spanish-speaking Christian
format.
WBZK went off the air Wednesday. It will resume airing programs early
next week, said Russ Jones, manager of Carolina Metro Radio, the Spanish
branch of Positive Radio Group in Blacksburg, Va.
WBZK's studio, now located on U.S. 321 Bypass, will move soon to 4201-
J Stuart Andrew Boulevard off Interstate 77 in Charlotte near the Billy
Graham Parkway. Signals will travel via phone lines to WBZK's tower,
which sits on 17 acres in Rock Hill.
WBZK owner and general manager Curtis Sigmon could not be reached for
comment. He sent a fax to The Herald sports department Thursday that
said: "WBZK has been sold. It is off air for a few days during changes.
The new owner does not plan to carry Clemson sports - please delete from
your listing. Thanks for years of working together. It's been fun."
WBZK-AM signed on the air in April 1956. It broadcasts in York,
Chester and Lancaster counties and parts of other counties during the
day. Sigmon operated it by himself most of the time.
WBZK's return to the air next week will enable Carolina Metro Radio's
WNOW 1030 AM, which currently broadcasts Christian programs, to become a
secular commercial station. WNOW's studio will move from its location in
Matthews, N.C., to the Stuart Andrew Boulevard site in November.
Humberto Martinez will be WBZK's director. Eighteen hours of weekday
programming will be provided by Radio Shalom, a Charlotte nonprofit
production company. Local Spanish-speaking pastors have been lined up to
provide broadcasts.
Radio Shalom studio engineer Daniel Kusak said his company will
broadcast from noon to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday and 24 hours on
Saturday and Sunday. Programming will include music and call-in talk
shows. Radio Shalom will also have news at midday, in the evening and at
night.
The all-volunteer staff provides free programming for the nonprofit
organization, which operates on donations.
"I am a Christian. We think the people need to listen to something
good," said Kusak, adding they are renting the air time from Carolina
Metro Radio. "We're talking about the Bible and Jesus."
WBZK joins several Spanish-speaking stations currently operated by
Positive Radio Group, which has more than 30 stations in the Southeast.
The daytime WNOW began phasing in Spanish in 1994 and broadcasts only in
Spanish now. Other Spanish stations in the group are WCXN 1170 AM, a
daytime station in Hickory, N.C.; and WSGH 1040 AM, a 24-hour station in
Winston-Salem, N.C. WTIK 1310 AM in Durham, N.C., airs Spanish six hours
a day.
"The Spanish population is growing quickly, and they need programs for
orientation, education and information," said Martinez. Programs will
focus on families, young people and the elderly. "They need to know the
laws and understand that this country is different from Latin countries.
They need to get information about their benefits and rights."
Figures released in August by the U.S. Census Bureau show the Hispanic
population in York County has increased 106 percent from 1990 to 1999.
One of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the state, York
County had 736 Hispanic residents in 1990 and 1,521 in 1999. Jones
estimates that there are 100,000 Spanish-speaking people in the
Charlotte area.
"I sent my bosses a fax five years ago that said Atlanta already had a
full-time Spanish station and that Charlotte was going to have one, and
it was our choice if we were going to be the ones to do it," Jones
said."

CDJ Orientación has periodical surveys of stations in densely
populated areas.
From a recent survey published by Nelson Padilla in his Meridiano 2001
column I learn that the Cd. Bolívar station on 1380 is called R
Revelación, which seems to be a new name, perhaps indicative of a change
of format.
The Cd. Guayana station on 740 is reportedly still R Caroní, while R
Cuyuní is on 106.5 FM announcing "Cuyuní 106 FM".
R Llanera seems to be ex-R 1400, in Barinas.
The ranking lists mention a R Suprema, in San Fernando de Apure. No
frequency is given.
A R Superior, in Valera, is also mentioned. No indication of
frequency.
In Caracas, AM 14-90 Dinámica has changed to a format of Christian
contemporary music, including "gaitas", "joropos" and "salsa". Addr.
per Conatel is Blvd. Brasil, Santa Ana a Providencia, Casa No. 78, La
Pastora, Caracas, DF. Luis Huelga is "director ad honorem" (honorary
manager) per the newspaper "El Universal" in their column called "En el
dial".
R Suave 1260 changed its name and format three years ago to Palabra de
Vida. Is affiliated to Red de Radiodifusión Bíblica, in Charlotte, NC.
Edgar Croes is their C. E. Music is Christian "oldies".
R Nacional de Venezuela, "RNV", runs four different channels: Canal
Clásico 91.1, Antena Informativa (all news) 1050, Antena Popular, music
and sports, 630, and their "Onda Corta Internacional", which is one of
the toughest foreign services to hear from Latin America.
