In connection with the 75th anniversary of radio in Sweden, there will
be special broadcasts from a 150 Watt transmitter in Göteborg on 1584
kHz on 13 & 14 October. There will be relays of Sveriges Radio P4 and
special announcements acc. to this schedule: 13 October: 0655-1200 UTC,
14 October: 0600-0800 UTC. There will be first test transmissions on 8
October between ca 1500 and 1800 UTC.

Here's the results of the most recent DX test that have been received
here:
WJNT-1180, Jackson, MS - tested Saturday, September 30, 2000 from 1:00-
2:00 am EDT:
Tom Jasinski of Shorewood, IL, David Hochfelder in New Brunswick, NJ,
Nigel Pimblett in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Frank Aden in Boise,
ID, Tim Hall in Chula Vista, CA, Barry McLarnon in Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada, Bob Foxworth in Tampa, FL, Steve Francis in Alcoa, TN and
Patrick Martin in Seaside, OR all reported hearing the test. Bill Flynn
in Cave Junction, OR said he figured that due to the equipment he had
and where he lived he wouldn't be able to hear the test over the air, so
he went to the WJNT website(www.wjnt.com) and listened to it there.
However, Bob Karchevski in Mountain View, CA (north of San Jose) and
Blaine Thompson in Ft. Wayne, IN both tried for the test but were unable
to hear it. Also, Phil Bytheway of Seattle, WA reported that he tried
for the test an possibly heard some code at about 0200.
****The special transmission from NRK Ingoy (Norway) on 153 kHz has been
audible pretty well since the "local" program began at 1900 UTC (today
Friday). My QTH is in Southern Finland, roughly 1300 kilometers south of
the transmitter. Romania on the same frequency is much more powerful,
and another, unidentified music station is also strong, but with my
K9AY, NRK comes OK. More on the transmission at

****The signals from the new Ingoy transmitter is now coming in here (at
2120 UTC) with quite good streght. At 1900 I could not hear them at all.
The transmission is in both english and norwegian and gives at lot of
information about the village of Ingoy and the future for longwave
transmissions by NRK. They are planning to start digital transmissions

From DCRTV comes the following: Richmond's nostalgic 1380 AM, WTVR, is
now WVBB (for "Virginia's Big Band," perhaps?). WTVR remains the calls
of Richmond's CBS Channel 6 and 98.1 FM, an adult contemporary outlet.
No changes are expected in 1380's programming. The station was recently
purchased by Cox from Clear Channel.

1700 KQXX TX, Brownsville - 10/6 0330 - Dominant on frequency over
usual KBGG w/SS music. (PG-CO) (Their signal was a little better
than usual last night but is tremendously better tonight. Per my
visit to the transmitter earlier this week the new tuning shed
(photos on my web site) was in place at the KJJL tower. I suspect
that KKWY may now be diplexed into the KJJL 150 foot tower as
originally specified on their license.)

**The 1430 logging was interesting. KEZW is about 15 miles from me and
their night pattern is aimed right at me. KQLL should be aimed away from
me to protect KEZW. Couldn't hear KQLL at all when I unselected the
synchronous tuning.

Belgrade MW still on the air. 10/6 Heard it yesterday on 684 kHz but
this morning about 0430 UTC I heard only Spain and an Arabic station
(Saudi Arabia?) Those days I heard also an serbian station on 1566 but
to weak to recognize what programme was broadcasted.
10/7 But now in the evening heard again on 684 kHz with stronger signal
than the preceding day(s). They identify as "prvi program Radio Beograd"
(prvi=first) and announce only two FM frequencies. Once I heard also an
ID: "Novo Radio Beograd" (novo=new).

Signs were seen for a TIS on 1210 at the Experimental Aircraft
Association's facility near Oshkosh, and for one on 590 in Appleton.

The 530 TIS which has a sign in Green Bay, however, *was* heard. Now if
only I can figure out how I was hearing the BBC on 104.3 FM last
night... (I suspect a cable leak of WRN)

Vietnam 1242 were booming in on the web radio in Umea. Now, HLAZ is on
1566 with a huge signal.

"One of the Best Latin American DX Openings Ever"
On the evening of Saturday, 7 OCT 2000, I DXed from the Tonset Road
DXpedition site in Orleans, Cape Cod, MA. What I experienced was one of
those auroral propagation "feeding frenzies" for medium-wave DX from
South America and the Caribbean. Early on (pre-sunset), Brazil-760 was
coming over daytimer WVNE. Other Brazilians on 810 and 1010 showed
later. An interesting aspect of this opening was that, right after
sunset, many good signals came in from seldom-logged stations on the
"regional" channels above 1210 kHz.
Here are a few examples:

1320 WUNO, Puerto Rico
1380 Ondas del Mar, Venezuela
1390 Fe y Alegria, Venezuela
1550 R. El Sol, Colombia
I also had many unID's and tentatives in the above-1210 segment as
well as multiple Latin Americans on most of the lower band channels.
Most stations were identified but there were a few intractable waist-
deep pileups too. Once again I tried to get an ID out a momentarily huge
1050.3 (any help Florida DXers ?); not only was 1050.3 annihilating
WEVD-NY but a 1050.0 Latin American wiped out WEVD as well. I heard LA's
on channels where I've never noted them before: something on 1560 with
WQEW, a 1510 Spanish talker challenging WNRB, etc. There were some hets
never previously noted such as 1269.8 and 1510.51. Trans-Atlantics were
principally from northwest Africa. Mauritania-783 (parallel 4845) had an
outstanding signal, Guinea-1385.92 got loud, and Nigeria-1062 was coming
through at times.
Typing up all of the logs will take several days. I'm also planning to
go out to Rowley or Rockport some night after work this week for a bit
more DX fun. All this DX is getting me "psyched up" for the upcoming
Newfoundland DXpedition. If I'm getting all this stuff with antennas on
top of the car, just think of what a 1 km Beverage is going to bring in.
I'll have some tapes to play at the next Boston Area DXers meeting.
Bruce Conti will get a copy of the highlights for his National Radio
Club DX Audio Service. Speaking of Bruce, he's supposed to be camping on
the Maine coast this weekend. I hope that he could keep warm in the
near-freezing temperatures and that he had the opportunity to "milk out"
the superb band conditions to southerly DX targets.

audio from WTTM-1680 at the DE/MD line, though, and in the morning, a
bit of WHKT-1650 (more of it than of WPTX). Listen times roughly 0830
and 1345 10/10. But at least that explains why I never hear WPTX by day.

Has anyone reported a flipino on 1296 kHz? I heard one at 1400 UTC,
IDing as "DZFM" or something close to those call letters. Any ideas? I
presume it was from Southern Philippies as cx were very AU, with mostly
NZ and Australian DX. No Northern Asians were heard, not even the 500 KW
JJs. Thanks.
In doing some research I find the DXAB station in Davao City in Southern
Mindanao on 1296. The last time I checked I think they were owned by
ABS/CBN, but what I heard was a reply of DZFM-Metro Manila (738 kHz),
owned my the Philippine Broadcasting Service. I wonder if DXAB was sold
to them? This would work out with a station from Southern Philippines
with the strong AU cx. Has anyone logged DXAB? If so, do they relay
DZFM-Metro Manila? Thanks.

10/11. Yesterday evening the conditions towards Yugoslavia were very
good. I listened on 1566 kHz 1800-1900 to station, which I could not
identify. There was a musical programming with "strange" music (to my
ears!) the first hour and at 1900 started a news bulletin (not // 684).
They mentioned "Studio B" in the bulletin. Maybe it was just a mention,
but also maybe Studio B has moved to a new frequency (the music reminded
me about what I heard on 1350 kHz years ago). Do you know anything? I
don't think it was the old mentioned Yugoslave on the frequency, which I
have heard before. On 1485 I heard the seldom heard Radio Novi Sad L
with a local identification: "RTV Serbie - Radio Novi Sad". On 1602 one
of the Hungarians was really strong. I think it was the old Radio
Egerszeg, but in that case they ID-ed like: "Egerszeg Radio".

10/11. Was wondering if anybody can help me ID a station I heard this
morning on 1350 here in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. We have a somewhat
local station on this frequency, but at night they must reduce power
cause some times I can here a station from Virginia. But this morning I
heard a news format station in. In fact they were IDing as "Financial
News Radio". They were giving financial news, Dow Jones, and all that. I
heard a website mentioned as (www.financialnews.net) but I checked that
out and came up with nothing. This was around 6:50 to almost 7 o' clock
this morning. They were fading in and out, and a little closer to 7 are
local was starting to come in a little better! This was heard on a
Sangean ATS505 with a Select-A-Tenna. I know this may not be much but
any help would be grateful. I will check again tomorrow morning.

Just received an attractive PC QSL from WTAW College Station, Bryan,

** U S A. Crawford's KLVZ-AM 1220 to switch to classical Inside Radio
reports the following:
"Crawford Broadcasting's Christian contemporary KLV-AM, Denver changes
format. Switching to classical. Effective Monday, October 9th. The
station decided on the switch after the news of Latino Communications
buying classical KVOD-AM, Denver from Clear Channel. When the sale is
complete Latino Communications plans to change the format of KVOD-AM to
Spanish-language. This frees up Crawford to switch ``KLV-AM`` to
classical."
This is both good and bad news. Good in that classical radio will
continue in Denver. Bad in that the effective power of the 1220
frequency is much lower than 1280.
Perceptive Denver radio listeners will recall that Zee Ferrufino sold
1220 AM to Crawford for around $1.5 million within the last year. The
format changed from Spanish to Christian. 1220 will now switch to
Classical. 1280 switches from Classical to Spanish. Any questions?

Denver's classical music lovers will still have Bach, Brahms and
Beethoven on the radio.
Following Wednesday's announcement that the classical music format on
KVOD-AM (1280) will be dropped by new owners in favor of Spanish
programming, Crawford Broadcasting said Friday KLVZ-AM (1220) will
switch to classical no later than Oct. 9.
The station currently features Christian music and talk programming.
KVOD has been purchased by Latino Communications of Denver.
Don Crawford Jr., head of Crawford's local broadcasting outlets, said
the switch "is a natural," in light of Latino Communications' decision.
The station will concentrate on "traditional classic" rather than on
more "obscure" modern music, according to Crawford.
KLVZ (formerly KBNO) operates with 660 watts in daytime but drops to
60 watts at sundown, making it difficult to pick up in many parts of the
Denver area.
Noting there's a possibility of increased power, Crawford added the
KVOD call letters would be added if Latino Communications drops them.
Crawford called the format a "great companion" to Crawford-owned KLZ-AM

Colorado Public Radio Acquires Denver Station

CPR Acquires Denver Station to broadcast classical music 24 hours a
day
Colorado Public Radio announced today (10/6/2000) that it has acquired
a second Denver radio station to provide Colorado Front Range listeners
with full-time classical music programming.
The 1340AM station, acquired from Catholic Radio Network for $4.2
million, will begin classical music broadcasting immediately upon
Federal Communications Commission approval of the sale.
``This is a major step toward Colorado Public Radio's long-term goal
of providing a two-channel radio network for listeners statewide,`` said
Buzz Victor, Chair of the Colorado Public Radio Board of Directors.
``Given the recent turmoil in Denver radio, we feel a strong obligation
to ensure the survival of classical music radio as a vital community
resource.``
Colorado Public Radio's KCFR will continue its current schedule of in-
depth news and classical music programming at 90.1FM, while the addition
of 1340AM will allow for the continuation of full-time classical radio
in Denver. Special programs such as the weekly Colorado Symphony
Orchestra concert broadcasts will now be heard on both 90.1FM and
1340AM.
Latino Communications LLC recently announced that it will switch the
current KVOD classical music format at 1280 AM to Spanish-language
programming. Latino Communications and Colorado Public Radio have agreed
to transfer the KVOD call letters and music library to Colorado Public
Radio.
``KVOD has been a mainstay of classical music programming in Denver
for more than 30 years," explained Max Wycisk, Colorado Public Radio
President. "In the changing media world it is natural that KVOD can
become a non-commercial, public radio service. Colorado Public Radio has
been working for several years to produce the highest quality classical
music service possible. Now all of our classical programming will have a
full-time home in Denver.``
1340 AM reaches the entire Denver metro area and beyond, broadcasting
with 1000 watts of power 24 hours each day. Programming details will be

It's finally happened. CPR got their second Denver station.
Interestingly, they paid over $1 million more than Ferrufino paid for
1280 AM. And for an inferior quality signal: 1280 broadcasts at 5000
watts, 1340 at 1000 watts.
It is Ruby's opinion that CPR had little choice other than to buy an
AM station given the ever-escalating prices of Denver FM frequencies.
Certainly it's not the solution that CPR sought nor will be happy with.
Given the timetable for ramping up their 24-hour classical service, they
had little choice.
By being awarded the KVOD library, CPR has made it much more
difficult, probably intentially so, for any other entity to start up a
new classical radio operation. The combined CD libraries of KVOD, KCFR
and additionally KCFR's partner in L.A., KUSC cover roughly the same
time period of acquisition: 1982 to present. One would expect that there
would be countless duplications not only of major works by different
performers but of the very same performances.
Ruby would be very surprised if any of the current KVOD staff were
offered positions with the new KVOD.
Ruby's best guess is that 1340's programming will be a simulcast of
90.1 with the exception of the non-music programming. Eventually all of
1340's programming will be sourced from the Classical Public Radio
Network, a joint venture between KCFR and L.A.'s KUSC. The only
exceptions would likely be the Colorado Symphony broadcasts and an
occasional Opera Colorado performance.
It may boil down to whose satellite broadcasts do you prefer: Crawford
will be airing WCRB's SuperRadio programming from Boston, KCFR and the
new KVOD will be airing CPRN with programming assembled in L.A. and
Denver. You can certainly expect the latter to employ state of the art
voice-tracking, etc., all at the expense of a true local presence.
Crawford will be using local announcers at varying times to be
determined. Which one, if either, will air Karl Haas?
Believe it or not (and you should because it's true), NPR outlets make
their money from the news/talk programming, NOT the music.
Philadelphia's WHYY and WRTI do not differ dramatically in ratings but
DO in dollars raised. WHYY, airing news/talk has much more money in
their coffers than does WRTI which programs classical during the day,
jazz at night. BTW, classical listeners dole out the bucks more so than
the jazz audience.
Given the listenable range of 1340 AM and the potential dollars lost
in fundraising, it would make more sense to move ALL of the classical
programming to 1340 and air nothing but news/talk on 90.1 FM. Ruby isn't
advocating this but that's the harsh reality. Commercial radio outlets
would die to have the ratings that Morning Edition and All Things
Considered garner. The biggest problem with CPR's concept of NPR
programming is that they simply choose to repeat rather than air
additional programming. Do we need to hear two 2-hour blocks of ATC?
Wouldn't listeners be served better by airing Prairie Home Companion and
Car Talk once in order to air Saint Paul Sunday, Schickele Mix or any of
countless other fine offerings? It will never happen. CPR's goal is to
maximize revenue. They pay no additional monies to repeat programming,
additional programs would require additional money to be spent. (``Ruby

This is ironic. 1340 is where KDEN-AM was parttime simulcasting
classical music with KDEN-FM before KDEN-FM became KVOD (Norm Metcalf,
ibid., Oct 6 via DXLD)
Max Wycisk said he would never put news/talk on AM, because "nobody
under 45 will listen to it."
Since hardly anybody UNDER 45 listens to classical radio, I guess he
figures the music belongs on AM!
At 1280, KVOD demonstrated SOME surviving local content and support
for local arts groups. But at 1340, presumably with 24-hour syndication
from the Classical Public Radio Network, there will be little
resemblance to the original. This, just in ...
KLVZ (1220) reportedly will continue with its plan to switch to
classical music on Monday. How "local" will it be? Reports are in
conflict. Even though 1220's signal will be weaker than 1340's, a
demonstration of localism could be an important point of differentiation
between KLVZ and KVOD-1340.
That may not be economically feasible, however. So Denver may have to
be content with two syndicated classical formats. After all, isn't that
better than ONE syndicated classical format?

queries about the Philippine X-bander DZBF, I talked to the Station
Manager, Ms. Julie Borje, on the phone. DZBF is a community radio
station putting out 1 kilowatt from a newly built omnidirectional
antenna tower near the studio, but it has been licensed by the
Philippine National Telecommunications Commission since 1996. Based on
my listening, the full station ID in Tagalog is as follows: "Ito ang
Marikina [this is Marikina], Uno Seis Siete Cuatro sa inyong talapihitan
[on your dial], himpilang naghahatid ng kaalaman [a station that
delivers information] tungo sa mabuting pamayanan [towards a good
community] DZBF, Radio Marikina." Sign-off these past few nights was at

Just got a mail from Studio X. broadcasting from italy on 1584 kHz that
they are now broadcasting in AM-Stereo! The news is coming from
Massimiliano Marchi"<studio.x@xxxxxxxxx>.

one of the fewest radio stations around the world (the only one in

even if you haven't got an AM stereo receiver, you'll notice the great
difference in audio quality between RSX and the other stations !

On October 9th, 2000, a CME was directed toward Earth. The plasma and
shockwave should hit sometime today through tomorrow (October 12 - 13,
2000). Space weather is expected to reach moderate (category 2) levels
early in the period. A geomagnetic field disturbance is expected during
this time. Category G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions are
expected to occur during this disturbance. Category G2 geomagnetic storms
can result in the following system effects: high latitude power systems
may experience voltage alarms; corrective actions may be required by
ground control for satellite orientation problems and possible changes in
drag affect orbit predictions; high-frequency propagation can fade at
higher latitudes; and aurora is visible as low as 55 degrees latitude.
There will be a chance for isolated category R1 (minor) radio blackouts
sometime during the period with effects similar to those described in the
summary.
I just bought a used Bearcat DX-1000. There appears to be a problem
with it's front end (can't even hear locals with it's whip). Does
anyone have a schematic or service manual I can borrow?? phil b
I am also looking for a Kenwood R-600, Drake R7 and Panasonic RF-4900.
