12/9. KALT 1610-Atlanta TX is on with FOX Sports.

**Neil Kazaros - neilkaz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

12/9. Enormous sig here 35 miles NW of Chicago

*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

No trace of it here in Southern California yet; just a jumble of very
weak TIS's. Does anyone know how or why they ended up as the only
expanded band station on 1610?

**Glenn Hauser - ghauser@xxxxxxxxxxx

Tnx to Pat Martin tip; this will quickly become a pest here. Finally
something capable of overriding the Vance AFB TIS on 1610 which has been
nothing but open-carrier for a year or so.
"1610 KALT, Atlanta TX" ID heard at 0258 UT Dec 10
But, surprise, my local awakens from its slumber with a lofi, clicky,
loop every sesquiminute or so atop KALT, "Radio Service testing, 1-2-3-
4-5, 5-4-3-2-1 End of test." Now there`s a REAL DX challenge for anyone
outside Enid. While DXing KALT, keep your ears open for this.

*Patrick Griffith - Westminster CO - AM-DXer@xxxxxxxxx

1610 KALT TX Atlanta - 12/09 2128 - Good signal at times with deep
fades. Fox Sports Network. 'AM 16-10' and 'KALT' IDs. New. (PG-CO)

Drake R-8 and Palomar Loop

**Ronald Gitschier - 1570wyhi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I got what seems to be KALT Atlanta, TX 1610 at 10:41 Eastern with
sportsnews.com ad and CC Radio AD. Splash from (night power) 89 watt
WQOP 1600 Atlantic Beach, FL (Queen of Peace Radio = EWTN) which is
about 3.5 air miles away from me. Signal fair, into ESPN Programming.

**John Tudenham - Joplin MO - w0jrp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for tip on KALT 1610, ID at 1058pm cst of KALT. Good signal with
Fox sports talk in SW Missouri. Sounds like 10kw.

DX400 Radio shack with radio shack loop.

*kevin redding - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

Heard on a Kenwood R-1000 and 200' wire.

1610 [p] KALT TX, Atlanta 12/10 0038 very weak under a soupy mess of TIS
noise. They were talking earlier about college basketball and the
wife was complaining that not only was it nearly inaudible but it
had to be sports on top of it all. Did not get an ID tonight.

*Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

1610 KALT TX, Atlanta, weak u/o TIS stations with FOX Sports at 2054
EST 12/9. Heard with Hiesman Trophy news after 2100. Didn't catch
ID until 2358, but mainly buried under TIS, sounded like "1610,
KALT, Atlanta, TX", but uncertain. Faded in and out all evening.
Bad sunspot QRN again ruining CX to the East. I will sure be glad
when these solar storms finally end. (PM-OR)

Drake R8, 1500' Eastern Beverage

**Neil Kazaros - neilkaz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Here in Barrington IL when I posted prior to 9 PM last night about the
enormous sig,it was indeed huge. My indoor setup is a AOR7030+ w/a Kiwa
loop. My outdoor setup tends to a bit better, R8A w/a variety of approx
600 foot mini phased Beverages. I drive the truck to what ever ends of
the wire I want to DX from. But it's a bit too cold and snowie for that.
When I went to bed about midnight I checked and they IDed and then had
a moment of dead air. I did not check to see if audio came back on.
Yes, there is a community imfo station in Naperville.
If you ran 80 yards of wire you should have had no trouble hearing
KALT unless you ran the wire at right angle to them which would null
them. Aim the wire somewhat west of south and you'll be pointing right
at them and they should blast in.
I suspect they had 10KW on last night rather than the 1 that X-banders
are supposed to use at night.

Chuck Boehnke - Keaau HI - kale@xxxxxxxx

KALT 1610 heard here in Hawaii at 10:30 PM HST (0830 UTC) with spt px,
QRM from rlgs Caribbean Beacon. Drake R8B, ANC-4, Yaesu FRT 7700 tuner,
300 foot "Kahuna" dipole.

**JohnCallarman - JohnCallarman@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

After what I've heard (and haven't heard) on 1610 today, I suspect
KALT is still in the testing phase.
My inside receiver/antenna combination is not sensitive in the
daytime, and I heard nothing on frequency. On the car radio, which is
more sensitive but not so selective, I got mostly KRVA-1600 slopover and
no sign of a signal. Tonight, when I tuned across 1610 early (but did
not mark down the time) there was only a steady tone. Between 2305-2315
ELT, they were seguing pop music of the late '40s ... "A Little Bird
Told Me," "Again," "If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked a Cake" and
"Little White Lies," for example. Right now (2322), they're running
"Goodnight, Irene" by the Weavers.

**ALAN GIBLER - agibler@xxxxxxxxxxxx

At 7:35pm EST, I am listening to the Dr. Laura Show. Is this KALT?
About an s9+ on the NRD 535-D and sloper.I am in Ashtabula, the far
northeast corner of OHIO.

**Bruce Winkelman - bdwink@xxxxxxxx

Hearing a strong (S9+5) test tone, no programming here 8:50pm CST in
Tulsa, OK. Occasional fades but quite strong on peaks. Reminds me of MMs
in the 70's!! IC765 xcvr/40m inv vee w/center at 33 feet.
Just heard a full ID from 1610 KALT Atlanta TX 2059:30 CST, brief tone
then into what sounded like "SRN" network nx.

*Glenn Hauser - Enid OK - ghauser@xxxxxxxxxxx

I was checking 1610 after 0600 UT Dec 13 and at first concluded that
KALT was off -- then I heard a few seconds of network talkshow audio,
followed by longer periods of silence, cutting in and out repeatedly.
They are obviously having feed problems. This is quite subjective, but
signal seemed weaker versus local Vance AFB TIS on 1610, (which is still
doing its own loop as described previously), so KALT maybe cut back to 1
kW at night.

Anyone who reports that 1410 NJ Eatontown WHTG is "news/oldies" has
just been quoting a mistake in M-street verbatim and not actually
listening to the station, which is 50s, 60s 70s oldies and not // WBUD.

According to this morning's Inquirer [DEC 8] WTEL-860 will change
again to a business format [from religious] and go back to call letters
WWDB now that that is changed.

**Russ Edmunds - wb2bjh@xxxxxxxxxxx

The latest FCC Call changes listing includes the approval of WWDB for
860 ( formerly WTEL, formerly WWDB, formerly WTEL) and the re-allocation
of WTEL to 1160 in Red Springs, NC ( formerly WYRU, formerly WTEL,
formerly WYRU ), all co-owned ( along with the former WWDB-FM 96.5, now
WPTP ).

1050 KBLE: This has been off the air since 12/3 or before (I think
Bruce Portzer heard it off first). The vacancy leaves a mixture of the
Frazier Park Disney station, KORE and KTCT, usually checked at 1900 and
1000, with KTCT usually winning.
As an aside, when Jim Gabbert got the OK to put 1050 on fulltime, the
station (then KOFY) had trouble covering San Jose at night because XED
didn't always power down in a timely manner. Gabbert, who was born in
Central America and speaks fluent Spanish, flew down to meet with the
owner to straighten things out. I guess it was resolved.
1680 WTTM: This is logged by most as "ESPN 1680" (even as recently as
12/4 by Mike Stonebridge) but a Finnish DXer, Hannu Romppainen, in Phil
Bytheway's AMDX News Flash dated 12/7, reports hearing it on 11/18 as
"TM Radio" with business talk. Has anyone else heard it with this
programming?
950 KJR: Still has not gone to 50kw. Maybe in the New Year.

KUAU Haiku, Maui 1570 kHz heard 9:45 PM to 10:PM s/off (0745 to 0800 UTC
12/12/00) with Gospel Music. Announced at s/off "This is KUAU Haiku,
Hawaii signing off. KUAU is owned by the Assembly of God Church and is
operated by Latitide 21 Broacasting Inc." This is the name of the former
owner's (Richard Miller) company and the voice signing off sounded very
much like Richard Miller's voice. Good signal but slight Mexico QRM.

Vladimir Titarev from Kremenchuk-UKR reports that R.Briz (a station of
the Ukrainian Navy) again is on the air on 1476 kHz in Sevastopol. The
power seems 20kW as before. Address: P.O.Box 140, 99011 Sevastopol.

Last week on a DXpedition to Lapland Jim Solatie and I logged a new
unidentified station, very likely from Romania. The ID sounds like
"Radio Sudet" or something like that, and the language is Romanian. Rock
music, and news and weather on the hour with frequent IDs. Sounds
professional, not like a pirate. The frequency varies wildly. Originally
we found the station on around 1605 kHz, but by the end of the
DXpedition the station was found below 1600 kHz.
We couldn't find anything like this listed anywhere, so any help
(identity, location, address) on this one would be most appreciated!
Also, if someone has email contact addresses for Romanian DXers, I would
appreciate this info.
The LEM144 DXpedition report and log will be published next weekend on
"Freeze! DXing Arctic Style", if things go as planned.

Driving down through the Central Ozarks made the following observations
on December 7:(Delco Car Radio)

1250 KBTC Houston, MO was silent. It is not listed in the local phone
       book.
1290 KALM Thayer, MO and 1330 KUKU Willow Springs, MO and 1450 KWPM
West Plains, MO are transmitting together (with a few second
delay in Willow Springs) as the "Ozark Regional News Talk Radio".
All three seem to be below their rated power from the strength of
the signals. All three call signs are given on the hour.

12/8. This morning where excellent conditions on the X-Band: 1620,
most likely WTAW, 1660 WMIB with a huge signal, 1670 WRNC with C&W, 1700
WAFN. All at 0610 hrs.
Most interesting was a talkstation on 1630 kHz. Rather good signal,
but the bloody chirping utility made reception difficult. I think it was
the new WRDW from Augusta Georgia, scheduled with Talks and Sports. Lots
of commercials heard, one ID sounded like "AM 14-40 All Talk Sports" (or
14-80?) By 0640 reception became drastically poorer.

Comments

A very interesting night all in all. I'm not advanced enough in my
dxing skills to say "oh the weather is cloudy tonight, so I should
expect..." But, I did note a strong opening to the south. WWL was
bleeding over onto 880 (obliterating WCBS), WBAP, and WSB were booming
in stronger than normal, also.

COMMENTS

Finally something worth sending in. Conditions have been poor until the
last week when winter really arrived. Lots of snow and -28 to -35 C
temps....without wind chill that would have made it about -45 C. This
meant no trips to Valhalla DX site as was planned. Have a great Holiday
season if I don't have time or reason to write again.

Thought I was in for a treat earlier this evening. Tuning around the
upper end of the band I came a cross a huge het on 1460. Quickly tuning
to 1314 I discovered Norway was in with a huge signal, S-5+ on the R7,
and all this was a good hour before local sunset. Unfortunately it
didn't last, as by 16.55 MST it was all over and conditions were back to
normal, mediocre at best.
This what I heard. All time are UTC
Carriers were heard on the following frequencies: 954,1134, 1287,
1296, 1323, 1332, 1341, 1386, 1422, 1467, and 1557. Strangely nothing
below 954kHz. Plus the following.

1044 - Very faint music heard at 23.30
1053 - Man talking in unknown language at 23.27
1188 - Faint talking heard at 23.23 Unable to make out the language.
1197 - 2 men having a discussion in an unknown language at 23.18
1269 - Man and a woman talking in what sounded very much like german
       at 23.14. Very possibly Neumunster
1314 - Norway, Kvitsoy probably the one here with jazz at 22.19 Great
signal at times, S-5+ on the R-7. Not even a carrier at 23.55. If
there is going to be an opening to Europe from here, this is
       always in.
1377 - Faint music first heard at 23.07, which faded up to become an
old Eurythmic's hit. So very possibly Lille in France
1422 - Man talking in german at 23.08. Good signal at times. Very
       possibly Heusseiller
1458 - 2 stations here with Christmas music and talk at 22.40. 2 men
singing (?) at 22.50. This was followed by woman singing.
At 22.55 there was what sounded like an announcement by a man in
an unknown language. This was followed by what I can only
describe as "Anthem" type music. Then suddenly at 22.57 the
station ceased transmitting leaving the 2nd station alone and
very faint. The speech sounded mid-European/Slavic/Russian so
possibly Albania. The 2000 WRTH mentions the hours of
broadcasting for VOA in Serbian from Fllake as being from 23.00 -
23.30, and Albania is UTC +1 which is close, but who knows?

For the first time up here, LW signals were heard this evening after
sunset. Unfortunately, because of the time of year, both TA's and TP's
are possible. All times UTC

153 - Very faint singing first heard at 23.41 Then a man talking in
what sounded like Russian. Followed by more singing and talking.
Poor at best. Several possibilities both east and west.
162 - Very faint audio which I believe was a woman talking. Unable to
       hear language. Very poor.
188 - Very faint audio from a man talking. Signal too poor to discern
       language
 198 - Faint carrier heard.
1314 - A carrier was first noted here at 22.48, about 30 minutes before
local sunset. After sunset it disappeared only to return about an
hour later. Very faint audio was discernible. Poor at best,
       unlike last evening.

Dec 12 at 1410 PST, found a good signal on 1190 kHz, and assumed KEX,
but the loop said otherwise. After countryish mx, man gave a time check
for 14 after 4, said it was -26 in Weyburn, and non-ID'd as "AM 11-90
your Christmas music station". So a pretty firm tentative on CFSL.
KEX was there, but had to null CFSL to hear it. And of course, I
don't have a local on 1200 anymore...

Bruce Portzer - bportzer@xxxxxxxx

During the first week in December, I had the good fortune of taking a
business trip to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Since the area is
full of exotic DX stations, I brought along my Sony 7600D and circa-1980
Radio West loop, plus a cassette recorder and a digital walkman. The
7600D was ideal for this type of trip, thanks to its small size,
external antenna jack, fine tuning control, tape output jack, and decent
sensitivity/selectivity. Living in the northwestern US, I rarely ever
hear any medium wave DX from Latin America, so I was definitely looking
forward to the trip.
My hotel was in an area called Rodney Bay, near the northern tip of
the island. It was on a small peninsula and about 50-100 yards from the
water, so I had a mostly unobstructed saltwater path from the northeast
to the southwest. The hotel's major drawback was the steel frame
construction, and the builders had done a great job bonding the
structural steel to the ground system. The end result was that if you
were more than a few feet from the window you could only hear the AM/FM
locals. Fortunately, my room had a small patio, so I spent my evenings
DXing outside while the temperature dropped to the mid-seventies. Time
was rather limited, since I was only there for 2-1/2 days and had to
take time out for meetings, meals, sleep, and sightseeing. However, the
results were still pretty good.
Daytime DX included stations in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and most of
the islands in between, plus PJB-800. I logged 16 countries during the
day; of course it helped that I was surrounded by a bunch of small
island nations. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time during the
day so many daytime signals remained unidentified. The strongest
daytime signals were (in order) 1.St Lucia-660, 2.Dominica-740, 3.YVQE-
720, 4.Dominica-590, 5.Martinique-1310, 6.St.Kitts-830, 7.St.Kitts-555,
8.Barbados-900, 9.YVSY-1470, 10.YVRS-1020, using a quasi-scientific
method of seeing how far I could get from the window before the station
disappeared.
As expected, most channels were full of Spanish speaking stations at
night. As a general rule, stations heard well during the day would
dominate their channel at night (until they signed off anyway). Some
frequencies, like 1540, had a very dominant station that pretty much
covered all potential interference. Others, such as 1280, were like US
graveyard channels, with several stations fighting it out. Still
others, including 1270, 1350, 1440, and 1450, had a strong buzz from
whoever was off frequency, making it hard to identify much of anything.
Many stations signed off around midnight, reducing the interference
level quite a bit and revealing other stations that couldn't be heard
earlier in the evening. The effect reminded me of DXing after midnight
on Monday mornings in the late 60's and early 70's, when many US &
Canadian stations had silent periods. I didn't hear any Brazilians and
only one station from the Guianas, but they were in the one direction
that didn't have a coastal enhancement effect. No Central Americans
were heard, either, and only one tentative Mexican. Cuba and Hispanola
were surprisingly hard to hear - I only logged 4 Cubans, 2 Dominicans
and a tentative Haitian. In retrospect, more Cubans were probably there
and just went unnoticed. There were, in fact, a lot of channels with
good signals on them that I never nailed down simply due to lack of
time. Overall, I heard somewhere between 27 and 30 countries, depending
on how you feel about a couple tentative logs.
The US stations weren't hard to pick out, since they were usually in
English (though some were in Spanish). I think I heard around 15
states. The easiest regular band station during the evening was WSAI-
1530 in Cincinnati, which had no co-channel interference to speak of.
KYW in Philadelphia was putting up a good fight against the LA stations
on 1060, and several expanded band stations had good signals. The US
was easier to hear after midnight, when stations as far away as Fort
Worth (WBAP) and Chicago (WGN WBBM WLS) were heard. The strongest US
station after midnight seemed to be WRVA-1140 in Richmond.
The highlight for me was hearing a few Trans-Atlantic stations.
Vatican Radio-1530 had the best TA signal. Most of the others were from
somewhere near the Mediterranean, except for Ireland-567, which really
blew me away. It would be interesting to know how TA reception was in
Europe and the eastern US/Canada at the time - I have absolutely no way
of knowing if the TA opening was good, bad, or average by local
standards.
Overall, this was a pretty exciting DX adventure, though not nearly
long enough. I'm surprised there aren't more DX reports from this part
of the world, since it's close to the eastern US and it's a popular
tourist destination. Maybe the islands' reputations as romantic getaway
spots are too incompatible with late night DX sessions ("You're not
bringing your radio... are you, dear?"). Any of the other islands in the
area would probably offer similar DX opportunities. I was able to hear
quite a bit of interesting DX on a relatively modest setup. Someone
with a communications receiver and a K9AY or Kiwa loop antenna could
probably hear all sorts of exotic stuff, especially on the eastern side
of one of the islands, where you'd have a direct shot at Africa and
Brazil.

Now for the loggings:

 530 TURKS & CAICOS, 2304 12/5 loud signal w/some Grenada-535 splat.
       Not hrd during day.
 535 GRENADA, fair-good days & nights. Good w/funeral anmts 2303 12/5.
550 PUERTO RICO, Ponce, WPAB, 2307 12/5 RCR promo & Radio 5-50 ID in
       SS good.
555 ST KITTS, Basseterre, good days w/Zed Eye Zed IDs. Seems to be AN
       (still on 0617 12/7)
560 VENEZUELA, Pto Ordaz, YVRH, 2133 12/6, man & woman alternating
w/what sounded like news, woman gave Radio Nacional de
Venezuela ID, mixing w/Guyana. Noted //1240 at 2147 recheck.
560 GUYANA, Georgetown, 2159 12/6, good w/BBC Caribbean report, then
woman w/news "compiled in the newsroom of the Guyana
Broadcasting Corp". Promo about advertising on GBC 2202.
567 IRELAND, 0623 12/7 fair w/easy listening vocals, male ancr in EE
w/Irish accent. A couple of clear "Radio One" IDs, then news
0630. This one was a major surprise and probably my best catch.
 570 USA, Asheville, WWNC 0624 12/7, atop w/ID "the stn that's first
for nx, wx & your all time country favorites, WWNC", then cw
       song.
570 DOM REP, Sto Domingo, R Cristal, 0307 12/6 apparently the one
w/list of stations in Dominican cities, including Santiago, La
Vega, La Romana, & others I couldn't decipher. Poor but
       briefly atop, then faded.
570 CUBA, 0409 12/7, Reloj ticker fair in jumble
585 SPAIN, Madrid, 0636 12/7 fair w/SS talk, sounded like news pgm,
w/distinctive musical riffs. Strong enough to recognize words
like buenos dias & noticias, inflection was much more sharp and
staccato than Latin American Spanish. Fair until 0645 then faded.
590 DOMINICA, Roseau, has moved here from 595, good signal day &
night. Has anmts & ads in EE & French patois. Off by 0305
       12/6, leaves OC on AN.
 600 VENEZUELA, Cumana, YVQB, 1120 12/5 noted w/many "R Popular" IDs
during talk pgm, Also a couple ments of Sucre. Not sure if
that's the name of the show or a relay of someone else.
610 TRINIDAD, Port of Spain, 2200 12/5 good w/Hindi pgm, then "This is
       NBN, National BCing Network, 610 AM, 91.1FM, 98.9FM & 100FM",
then time check & news. Weak days in 660 splatter, i.e. 1738
       12/6 w/Hindi mx & EE anmts
 612 UNID, hets here & 621 around same time 567 & 585 were in 12/7.
Too much splatter to get audio. No other hets noted, so the
opening was apparently confined to the low end of the dial
620 ANTIGUA, St Johns, Radio ABS fair-good days & evening but suffered
       from 660 splatter
620 UNID, 0411 12/7 ID as Radio Estrellas Dias or something
phonetically similar, then ancr started talking about
Supermercado Funda (?). Doesn't match anything listed.
640 GUADELOUPE, no sign of them, could only hear YVQO when I nulled
local 660 splatter. Probably either off the air or using
drastically reduced power. DXLD reports they have been off due
to the staff being on strike.
 660 ST LUCIA, Radio St Lucia, 0359 12/6 s/off, to return at 5 a.m.,
then St Lucia NA. Mentioned FM freqs of 97.3 north and 97.7
south. Leaves carrier on AN w/noticeable amount of power line
hum. Now the only AM station on the island. Sideband splash
noted from 610 to 680 an estimated 8-10 miles from xr site.
Format is typical of other stations in the area; a mix of
different types of regional mx w/some light rock/r&b/cw songs.
670 VENEZUELA, Caracas, YVLL, 0416 12/6 good w/political talk, which
sounded like a presidential address or something similar (can't
say for sure due to my very limited knowledge of Spanish). Was
       // 640/750/880/920/1020/1040/1050/1070/1090/1110/1120/1220/1240/
1260/1340/1470/1580 and probably a bunch of others. Speech
apparently ended 0454, when everyone suddenly signed off.
Unfortunately I missed the s/off anmts except maybe the one on
1340, but it was interesting to hear different versions of the
Venezuelan NA as I tuned down the dial. Not sure why they were
airing the speech this late, other than many stations were
running sports play-by-play earlier that evening.
680 VENEZUELA, Cumana, YVQR, 1846 12/6 SS talk w/mentions of Cumana,
       no definite ID
680 UNID, 2312 12/5 someone atop w/Radio le Rey mention, not sure if
ID, name of pgm or what.
690 ANGUILLA, Caribbean Beacon, good signal with tedious religious
talks any time I tuned here day or night, never had the interest
to wait for an ID. This station gets my vote for the world's
       most boring programming.
700 VENEZUELA, Pto Ordaz, YVPQ?? 0500 12/7 what sounded like a Radio
Sur ID, then ad w/ments of Venezuela
705 ST VINCENT, fair days w/typical island type programming. Never
       really checked their s/off time
710 USA, Miami, WAQI, 0402 12/7 long SS promo w/many Radio Mambi IDs,
also "WAQR Miami-Ft Lauderdale" ID in EE, seemed to go on
forever. Finally went into talk show 0405, which opened with a
few bars of "Theme from a Summer Place".
 720 USA, Chicago, WGN 0516 12/5 good w/call ID & Business nx
 720 VENEZUELA, Porlamar, YVQE 1137 12/5 full-blown ID w/Oriente
slogan, call, city, state, etc, then string of local ads. Also
2206 12/5 monster signal w/R Oriente ID. Third strongest signal
during the day after 660 local & Dominica-740.
730 TRINIDAD, Port of Spain, 2203 12/5 news, local ad, sports (US
Basketball scores) & ID. Strong but some YVQE-720 splatter.
Good at other checks during evening 12/5&6. Not hrd during day
due to 720/740 splatter & local terrain blockage. Seems to run
BBCWS all night. Nighttime QRM from a couple of SS stns I never
       identified.
740 DOMINICA, the second strongest daytime signal after the 660 local.
Uses "Caribbean Voice of Life" slogan, mostly Christian mx in
various Caribbean styles, also nx from unid US network & a few
canned religious pgms. Announcers spent most of their time
asking for money to keep the stn going - appeared to be the
equivalent of pledge week like on NPR/PBS, rather than something
they do all the time. Didn't check s/off; WRTH lists it as 0100,
       which is probably correct.
740 PUERTO RICO, San Juan, WIAC, 0123 12/7 strong w/Radio Puerto Rico
       ID during sports broadcast
 740 UNID, 0521 12/5 Xmas greeting w/mention of Venezuela, Guyana, &
Armonias or similar sounding name, possibly listed YVNQ R Caroni.
750 COLOMBIA, Medellin, HJDK, 0403 12/6 assume this was the one w/many
       ments of Colombia during ad
 750 VENEZUELA, Caracas, YVKS, 0101 12/5 strong w/RCR ID & mentions of
       Caracas (pronounced cah rah CAHS)
760 PUERTO RICO, Mayaguez, WORA, 0409 12/7, atop w/promo for Super
Kadena Noticias & ad for a place in Bayamon.
760 USA, Detroit, WJR, 0410 12/7 "....JR news" hrd way u/WORA
 770 COLOMBIA, Bogota, HJJX, 0525 12/5 dominant o/2-3 others w/"Radio
Sucesos RCN" & "RCN Bucaramanga" IDs. RCN Bogota ID good during
       nx 2319 12/6.
774 UNID, 2320 12/6, TA carrier w/bits of audio. Spain?
 780 USA, Chicago, WBBM 0408 12/7 atop w/traffic report
780 BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS, Roadtown, 0158 12/6 "Zed BVI, the AM
Advantage" ID & ads, then Reggae Christmas song "Santa Claus, Do
You Ever Come to the Ghetto?", s/off by woman 0201, then brief
hymn and GSQ. Good daytime signal in St Lucia
790 BARBADOS, Bridgetown, good daytime signal, also good nights
w/minor QRM, owned by a Catholic church group so has a fair
amount of religious content. Still on 0510 12/7 so probably AN.
800 NETH ANT, Bonaire, 2004 12/5 w/CBN nx in EE, various religious
PSAs, fair signal all day. Unimpressive night signal; the new
antenna system mustn't put much power to the east. Trans World
Radio ID by woman 2328 12/6, then EE relig pgm.
800 CANADA, Windsor, CKLW, 0406 12/6 good w/Canadian ads, then talk
       show
810 UNID, strong signal here both evenings 12/5&6 starting a couple
hours after LSS. Mostly SS songs w/no anmts, at least whenever I
checked. Had women reciting the rosary just after 0200 both
nights, also noted religious talks a couple of times. Very
strong, almost local-like. At the time I thought it was Bogota,
       but now I'm not sure.
810 PUERTO RICO, San Juan, WKVM, 1958 12/5 fair w/nx in SS, WKVM ID in
SS by man 2001, then short song w/call letters given a couple
       times
820 VENEZUELA, unid, 2230 12/5 woman ancr w/"La Musica Venezuela"
       mention, then harp mx
820 USA, Fort Worth, WBAP 0407 12/6 ID in passing mixing w/SS stns.
830 ST KITTS, R Paradise seems to be AN as was still on 0534 12/5 &
0510 12/7. Good signal during day.
 837 UNID TA het 0125 12/7
 840 USA, Louisville, WHAS, 0536 12/5 o/1-2 SS stns w/call ID &
       teletalk, local nx 0430 12/7.
840 ST LUCIA, R Caribbean International is silent, called station &
was told "we're not on AM any more", now only on FM 96.5 & 101.1
 840 PUERTO RICO, Yabucoa, WXEW, 1202 12/6, R Victoria jingle & Xmas
greeting, then YL DJ w/ SS rock mx
860 UNID 0540 12/5, bagpipe-like mx then man talking in low monotone
for a couple of minutes, not sure if EE or SS, then inst jazz
o/unid SS. Probably the same station w/interesting chime & flute
       mx 0515 12/7. Format suggests non-commercial/non-religious stn,
possibly at a University. Any ideas?
860 VENEZUELA, 2225 12/6 either YVOL or YVYE, RCR ID & nx very strong
       //750
860 DOMINICA, listed in WRTH but no sign of them, just a weak SS stn
here during the day. Should've been easy given the blowtorch
signals from 590/740. Probably no longer exists.
860 VENEZUELA, San Cristobal, YVOL 0703 12/7 promo with several R
       Mundial IDs in the jumble
860 USA, Dunedin, WGUL, 0706 12/7, barely above the noise floor w/wx &
call ID, into Perry Como song
870 USA, New Orleans, WWL 0543 12/5 probably the one w/Monday night FB
       postgame show o/u unid SS
870 VENEZUELA, Pto La Cruz, YVRU 1150 12/5 good w/Popular ID & nice
       Venezuelan harp mx
 870 UNID, 0433 12/7 someone w/ TCs & "(unreadable)...8-70" IDs after
       each song
880 USA, New York, WCBS 0551 12/5 call ID & "39 degrees in Central
       Park" hrd u/YVYM
 880 VENEZUELA, Pto Ordaz, YVYM, 0549 12/5 good w/lively SS mx &
Mundial ID o/WCBS. 0658 12/7 strong w/list of network affiliates
       including R Venezuela - Caracas (790), Tricolor - Barquisimeto

       much more.

ments of Margarita & Porlamar during ads

       ID atop the heap

       amid jumble of LA stns
1053 MOROCCO (tentative), 2150 12/5 het against jumble of LAs on 1050,
male talk surfaced 2358-2402, nothing ID'able at TOH, then gone.
Again 2233 12/6 w/"mid-east" music (to use the term loosely), man
& woman in unid lang, then faded, back at 2249 w/possible Koranic
recitations, still there 2256 w/definite AA talk. Woman spoke
just before TOH, then brief mx or news sounder 2300 & different
woman in AA w/what sounded like news.

1090 USA, Baltimore, WBAL, 0104 12/5 call ID & contest promo fair but
dominant, then U of MD basketball.
1100 ANTIGUA, 0400 12/7 "Zed D K" jingle after 6 time pips, then
continued w/usual Caribbean mx, possibly AN.
1110 VENEZUELA, Carupano, YVQT, 1952 12/5 loud w/elaborate R Carupano
ID, then lively SS mx. Great signal all day & night
1120 VENEZUELA, unid, 0351 12/6 vocal version of Venezuelan NA at tune-
in, obviously too late to ID it. Dominant o/another SS &
presumed KMOX. Tried the following night but whoever it was
stayed on late for the political speech (see 670). Odd s/off
time in any case. 3 stations listed.
1120 UNID, 0344 12/7 someone w/lively pop mx mostly o/KMOX & another
SS, seemed to give IDs in middle of songs, but haven't able to

       SS
1134 SPAIN (tentative), 2249 12/6 woman talking, too weak to ID
language. Still there 2255 recheck. Definite Spanish talk 2304.
1140 MEXICO(?), 0543-0550 & 0715-0728 12/7 unid stn w/Mariachi &
Ranchera mx, delivery very typical of Mexican stns. Have several
anmts on tape, but haven't found an ID yet. Tape available if
someone wants to have a go at it. XEMR Monterey the most
probable Mexican listed. 1140 VENEZUELA, Porlamar, 0102 12/6 LV
del Caribe, long elaborate ID w/many ments of 24 hrs, i.e.
"Porlamar, LV del Caribe, con musica y noticias las 24 horas del
dia". Hrd this anmt at least one other time, but for some reason
all I could hear after about 11 pm was a loud WRVA & a couple of
unIDs. Had one of the strongest daytime signals in St. Lucia and
excellent signal at night. Maybe they aren't AN yet but will be
       soon.
1140 USA, Richmond, WRVA, 0351 12/6 loud w/ads, Coast-to-Coast talk
show, "Newsradio 1140 WRVA" ID, seemed to be mixing w/Porlamar
OC. Possibly the strongest US stn after midnight.
1150 UNID, 0558 12/7 possible Suceso ID, chopped up by OC &/or low hets
1160 ANTIGUA, CRL good day & night w/religious programs. Never checked
further. Leaves OC on all night after s/off. Seemed already off

1160 UNID, someone's NA 0559 12/7, weak u/CRL OC, possible s/off
1170 USA, Wheeling 0559 12/7 atop w/legal ID, likely the one hrd
       earlier w/canned religion
1180 USA, Marathon, 0600 12/7 good w/Radio Marti ID
1190 PUERTO RICO, San Juan, WBMJ, 0100 12/6, ID in SS for WBMJ San Juan
& WIVV Viques, then SS relig pgm
1200 UNID, 0601 12/7 ID sounding like Radio Orloncion, didn't sound at
all like listed Dimension (YVSF) or Revolucion (Cuba)
1210 VENEZUELA/PUERTO RICO, 1858-1901 12/6 confusing mix of YVZT & WHOY
at about equal strength. YVZT w/R Anzoategui ID & ments of
Barcelona, WHOY w/R Hoy ID & ments of Puerto Rico
1230 VENEZUELA, Caucagua, YVNT, 2143 12/6 echo-chamber ID as R
Barlevento after SS hip-hop song. Good at first but gradually
       faded.
1240 VENEZUELA, Punto Tumatey, YVNV, 0240 12/6 Radio America ID &
mentions of Venezuela good-strong, apparently either a program
name or alternate slogan for RNV. Radio Nacional ID & nx //560
       2148 12/6. 0555 12/7 loud w/RNV ID & list of stns in the network.
1270 CUBA, Camaguey, 0450 12/7 Reloj poor in jumble, only recognizable
parts were the morse "RR" every minute & occasional clock ticks
1270 UNID, someone off freq creating a loud growl 2334 12/6
1280 USA, New York, WADO, 0230 12/6, briefly surfaced w/"WADO 12-80 AM
New York" ID in EE during SS talk, then faded into jumble of
       Several other stns.
1280 PUERTO RICO, Arecibo, WCMN, 0237 12/6, atop w/SS ID "WCMN 12-80 la
       Grande de Arecibo" then song
1280 VENEZUELA, 2359 12/6 someone w/song about Venezuela, not sure if
long jingle or a real song. Two YV's listed.
1280 HAITI, Port-au-Prince, R Citadelle (tentative), 0005 12/7 definite
French talk surfaced for a couple minutes, then faded into jumble
1280 COLOMBIA, 0007 12/7, someone surfaced w/ads & Xmas greetings,
possible ID as "Super de Colombia". HJTK?
1300 NETH ANTILLES, St Martin, 1209 12/5 local nx in Carib EE, PJD2 ID,
then local ads, fair. Also tried for Eustasis-1120 & Saba-1410,
but nothing hrd (both use low power)
1310 MARTINIQUE, Ft de France, RFO was dropped from WRTH listing a few
years ago, but is still on the air. Semi-local signal (about 25
miles away), very low modulation level & has a tone in the
background all the time. Probably AN. Local pgm w/ads 1159
12/6, then R Martinique ID & nx. Noted off 1220 12/6 but back on
       at recheck that afternoon.
1330 USA, New York, WWRV, 0154 12/7 bizarre sermon w/fiery EE preacher
& SS translator alternating back & forth a few words at a time.
Figured out who it was when he said something about Radio Vision,
Which prompted me to check 530 for a //, sure enuf they were.
       Mixing w/jumble of other stations.
1340 VIRGIN ISLANDS (US), Charlotte Amalie, WSTA, 2011 12/5 community
bulletin board pgm w/many St Croix & St Thomas items. The only
USVI stn I definitely ID'ed, aside from tentative on WVWI-1000
1340 VENEZUELA, Caracas, YVNE, 0454 12/7 apparently the one w/ tail end
of s/off anmt, then vocal NA
1350 UNID 2355 12/6 someone off freq, creating a loud growl. "Quality
Car Wash" ad in SS surfaced 2356, possibly WEGA.
1370 COLOMBIA, Bogota, HJKX, 2358 12/6, atop w/R Mundial ID, mention of
       "Bogota, capital de Colombia"
1370 PUERTO RICO, Viques, WIVV 2140 12/5 & other times religious pgms
in American English. Didn't wait for ID but nothing else fits.
1380 VENEZUELA, Pto Cabello, YVNG, 0224 12/5 good w/SS rock mx & Ondas
       del Mar ID
1400 GRENADA, Harbor Lights, 2121 12/5 and many other times, strong
w/religious pgms, never waited for definite ID. Off before 0300
       12/6 & just an OC 0141 12/7, so seems to s/off early
1410 UNID, 0211 12/7 "...la (something) mismo..." ID?? Fair but atop at end

       of song.
1420 PUERTO RICO, Ponce, WUKQ, 2135 12/5 SS atop w/Puerto Rico
mentions. Probably WUKQ. Het from 1422.
1430 PUERTO RICO, Cauguas, WNEL, 0609 12/7 strong w/ Notiuno ID
1430 VENEZUELA, Pto La Cruz, 1152 12/6 local ads, TC, then man w/nx. R
       Bahia ID 1850 12/6.
1440 UNID, Loud growl (a few hundred Hz het) here all evening 12/5 &6.
Cleared up some time after midnight. If I'd had more time I
could have nailed down the offender's s/off time.
1450 UNID, loud growl (a few hundred Hz) here all evening 12/5 & 6
making it hard to decipher anything else. Noticed it was gone
when I checked around 0600, not sure when the culprit signed off.
1470 VENEZUELA, Carupano, YVSY, 1215 12/5 loud w/R Vibracion ID &
Cumbia mx. Strong signal day and night. Still on 0610 12/7 so
       probably AN
1480 PUERTO RICO, Fajardo, WMDD, 1945 12/5 long string of ads for
Fajardo businesses, then "(something) 14-80" jingle into mx
1490 PUERTO RICO, Ponce, WLEO, 1939 12/5 tuned in during "...onca, 14-90
AM" ID, then several Puerto Rico ads
1500 VENEZUELA, Cumana, YVRZ, 1847 12/6 "Dos Mil" ID & mentions of
       Cumana. Good signal all day.
1500 USA, Washington, WTOP, 0139 12/7 call ID, traffic report & wx
       u/YVRZ
1512 UNID, Screamer het 2138 12/6, never produced audio despite many
rechecks and very little 1510 QRM.
1520 PUERTO RICO, San Juan, WVOZ, 1148 12/6 soft SS vocals & La Voz ID.
1521 SAUDI ARABIA, 2030 12/5 first noted as a het, male talk surfaced
2123 but not enough to ID the language. Remained a het most of
the evening. Surfaced again 2056 12/6 w/Middle Eastern mx (male
vocal), easily separable from 1520, anmt by man in Arabic 2100
seemed to match ID listed in WRTH, then mx fanfare & talk. Good
       level 2105 recheck w/male talk.
1530 VATICAN CITY, 2110 12/5, Vatican Radio IS, then SS rlgs pgm to
2130, woman w/Radio Vaticana ID, then IS & PP pgm. Fair-good
signal. Again 2109 12/6 fair w/IS & "Radio Vaticana, programa
espanol" ID. This was far and away the easiest TA. 1530 was
essentially a QRM free channel until WSAI faded in.
1530 USA, Cincinnati, WSAI, 2252 12/5 ID & Christmas song, noted later
w/U of Kentucky basketball, plus various other times w/adult
standards. Had the frequency pretty much to themselves both
       nights.
1539 UNID TA het around sunset 12/6. Way too much ZNS1 QRM to get any
       audio.
1540 BAHAMAS, Nassau, ZNS1, 0045 12/5 "National Voice of the Bahamas"
ID during "Night Time Serenade" pgm. Strong most of the time at
night w/only traces of weak QRM.
1548 UNID, TA het around sunset 12/7. Kuwait??
1550 VENEZUELA, Los Teques, YVMW, 0206 12/6 fair but dominant w/R
       Metropolitana ID
1560 PUERTO RICO, Bayamon, WRSJ 0209 12/6 good w/"NCN" ID during
       Christmas greeting, then SS monologue
1570 DOMINICAN REP, Sto Domingo, HIAJ, 2301 12/5, R Amancer
Internacional ID after religious pgm. Dominant.
1580 VENEZUELA, Cumana, YVTK, 2026 12/5 good w/promo for "Radionovelas
de Manzanares", sounded like they were giving previews of coming
       shows. Good signal all day.
1580 VENEZUELA, 0016 12/6 & various other times, someone //YVRQ-910.
       Also 2134 12/6 w/Venez NA & start of a sporting event //910.
Generally dominant all evening w/1-2 other stns sometimes mixing,
better signal than 910 most of the time. Signal strength
suggests YVTK, which was in well all day. The other 2 listed
       YV's are pretty far away.
1580 UNID, 0601 12/5, ID sounding like "R Patris...AM Central", didn't
have tape running at the time
1580 UNID, 2106 12/5 unid SS talk w/3 decending chimes repeated in
       background
1590 PUERTO RICO, Guyama, WXRF, 2049 12/6 possible ID giving PO Box in
       San Juan
1600 PUERTO RICO, Bayamon, WLUZ, 2045 12/6 Puerto Rico ads & mention of
       Bayamon.
1602 UNID TA het from well before to well after sunset 12/5&6, but
       never heard any audio.
1610 ANGUILLA, Caribbean Beacon, religion day & night. See 690 for
       additional comments.
1660 USA, 2326 12/5 good o/unid US stn w/many R Unica IDs. I thought I
had something really exotic until they said R Unica & Nueva York
in the same breath! Note that the Argentine is listed as R
Unidad, a potential source of confusion. Unid w/adult standards
       in background
1680 USA, 2332 12/5 sports talk, not //1700, fair signal. Apparently
       WTTM Princeton, NJ
1690 USA, Lexington Park, WPTX, 2329 12/5 I assume this was the
Talkradio net stn here, good w/network ads & PSAs, but dead air
       where local anmts should've gone.
1700 USA, Miami Sprs, WAFN 2328 12/5 probably the one w/sports talk at
       good level

FM Bandscan:
I also managed to check out the FM band a couple of times. Here's
what I heard in the way of locals (it's quite different from the
published lists).

94.5 "The Wave, St. Lucia's New Rhythm & Soul"
96.5 Radio Caribbean International (Southern part of the island), not
heard but is here per phone call to station
97.3 Radio St. Lucia //660AM/97.7FM (Northern half of the island)
97.7 Radio St. Lucia //660AM/97.3FM (Southern half of the island), not
heard but is here per signoff announcement
100.1 Helen FM, also ID's as "Radio 100" and "The One"
100.3 Helen FM, //100.1 not heard but listed on their web site
101.1 Radio Caribbean International (Northern part of the island)
       //96.5
103.5 Helen FM, //100.1 not heard but listed on their web site
105.3 Radio Koulibwi, ID's as "The Hot One" and "Rocking the Caribbean,
       Hot FM"

I also heard a couple of weak French stations (probably Martinique) on
99.5 and 102.0, as well as weak religious stations (probably on other
islands) on 91.8 and 102.5, and probably could have found some more if
I'd spent more time on FM.

12/13. Here's a DX tip. It's 8.30 p.m. EST on Wed. 13 DEC and Norway-
1314 is booming in here at Billerica, MA [15 miles NW of Boston]. I'm
only 20 miles "as the seagull flies" from the shoreline over in Ipswich,
but I think this signal will be loud enough to reach some of you
"inlanders".

**Benjamin Dangerfield - ben-dangerfield@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

OK, I had a signal from them around 2130 EST on DEC 13, but not good at
all, so they don't seem to be making it very far inland. Had about 20
other TAs this evening, most of them rather weak, the best being Monte
Carlo-1467 earlier.

drifted from 1404 kHz. No talk, just singing. It is in fact the only
possibility to hear this program as it is not relayed on any other MW

Tuned in the frequency of 765 kHz a station broadcasting in FR being
identified as R. MEDI. I haven´t more dates about it, but I listened
this station with transmition almost 24 hours at day. Cause of the
direction that indicates my antenna from my QTH (23º) to the signal I
think that the transmiter site is at Casablanca. Comparing it with the
Channels A, B and C of RTM and R. Mediterranee I. of Nador by 171 kHz I
observed that it is independent and handles with own programming.
In other hand also in the frequency of 1044, I can listen the RTM C,
according to some prestigious publications the transmitters are in Seba-
Aioun. Studied the direction originating from the signal with a compass
and a map I am almost sure that this is a mistake since the only one
important city in this direction from my antenna is Oudja. Therefore I
would assign the fx of 1044 to Oudja.
Could anybody me with some information about this stations?. Thank you
in advance.

***Glenn Hauser - wghauser@xxxxxxxxxxx

If the bearing is 23 degrees toward Casablanca, you must be south of
there instead of Spain. What is your location? Assuming there is some
mistake here, have you considered Dakar, Senegal? Glenn Hauser,

And another thing: Report to R. Santa Rosa, 1500 kHz, addressed Casilla
4451, Lima came back marked "No Reclamado" (not claimed). Any ideas?

I also received a QSL letter from KAVT yesterday. He mentioned that he
had hooked the KAVT transmitter to KXEX/1550 tower #2 with a temporary
tuning arrangement for the 1 kw test that I heard. Says the permanent
installation will be a shared arrangement on that same tower. Mr Shinn
says that he is also a MW DXer.

***Jari Savolainen - jari.savolainen@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

In a recent QSL from R Caroline 1503 of their October transmission
(Harwich) there was also mention of their power. This line says 1503
KHz/Kw 1/4 / 1/2. I imagine this means their basic transmitter being
250/500 Watts. What I have heard about RSL stations, I think their power
should be no more than 1 Watt ERP. Of course the ERP means a different
thing than the transmitter power, but isn't this a bit effective
transmitter thinking the ERP they are allowed to radiate. I am not very
familiar with the transmitter power/antenna construction/ERP ratio. Is
there any advantage using, say 500 Watts instead of, say 50 Watts to
produce the same 1 Watt ERP? Maybe longer feedline to get the radiating
part of the antenna higher? Ohh, what I wanted to ask is; Could I count
this as a verified 1 Watter (be it then ERP)?

I just had to mention this one! Received a f/d ppc from Syd Stewart,
GM at KFYR in Fargo, ND in 9 days after, check this, 11 f/u's since 22
Dec. 1980!!!! This report is just 10 days shy of 20 years old! I heard
the station when I lived in Minneapolis, MN and is stated on the card.
This takes care of ALL of my 1980 logs. Now for Radio Mundial Bolívar on
4770 kHz from 1981!
Speaking of which, I have an outstanding log(s) of Radio Continente-
YVKM on 5030 kHz, and as I was checking out my WRH-WRTH's, the 1952
edition has a full page ad for them on page 22. Being the computer geek
that I am, I scanned the page, cropped the logo at the top, and, being
as it was in B&W, filled in the oceans on the globe logo in blue. This
is, by far, the slickest ppc I have created yet. It's the 'old style'
type for a QSL card. My plan is to send a scan of the full page (you
know, for nostalgia purposes) and the ppc and see if I can score a QSL.
I've sent upwards of 10 f/u's to them, so far.
I will be happy to share the picture of the ppc to anyone who would
like to see or use it, along with the full-page ad.

*** THE EUROPEAN NDB HANDBOOK / 2001 EDITION ***
and
*** THE EUROPEAN NDB HANDBOOK CD / 2001 EDITION ***
by Michael Oexner

Nondirectional beacons (NDBs) are still in good use today as aids for
aeronautical and maritime navigation. NDBs are lowpowered (50 W to 250
W) LW- or MW-transmitters feeding omnidirectional antennas resulting in
a relatively small coverage area under daylight conditions. They
transmit a callsign consisting of a few letters in slow Morse code,
followed by a short silence or a continuous dash, before the callsign
will be repeated.
During hours of darkness NDBs can be received over much longer
distances, allowing the reception of NDBs throughout Europe, Northern
Africa, and even over transatlantic paths (e. g. Canada). By monitoring
NDB transmissions interesting data can be collected regarding LF
propagation conditions. Thus NDBs are interesting for amateur radio
operators who want to be active in the 136 kHz portion of the radio
spectrum.

  *** THE EUROPEAN NDB HANDBOOK / 2001 EDITION ***

Now in its third year already, the new ENDBH 2001 will give you the
most up to date NDB information available. Its over 140 spiral-bound
pages in DIN A4 format contain data of more than 3600 active NDBs
located throughout Europe, the Northern African countries, and the Near
and Middle East. Many of the more frequently heard transatlantic NDBs
have been included, as well as NDBs operating from offshore
installations such as oil platforms. Moreover the handbook lists widely
reported unidentified beacons and irregular call signs which result from
so-called "negative keying". Many a NDB mystery may be solved with this
kind of information on hand.
The layout of the NDB data is well known from the previous editions:
part 1 (the reference list) shows the entries sorted by alphabetical
order of the call sign and lists the carrier frequency, the modulation
frequency, the authority or company taking care of the NDB, name and
location of the NDB, country in ITU code, geographical coordinates,
distance and Great Circle bearing. Part 2 of the handbook is sorted in
frequency order, and part 3 in country order. As a new feature the 2001
edition now includes a fourth part which lists NDBs that have been
decommissioned.
As a special benefit to the users of this handbook, the distance and
Great Circle bearing are computed for the individual listener's
location.
*Please* don't forget to specify the geographic coordinates of your
listening post when ordering (recommended format to be used:
degrees/minutes/seconds). Please let me know whether you prefer the
distance shown either in kilometers or in miles.
To give newcomers an easy start the handbook includes a table showing
those NDBs that are nearest to your location. And for those who are
unfamiliar with Morse code, a reference table is included.

*** THE EUROPEAN NDB HANDBOOK CD / 2001 EDITION ***

This new CD contains all parts of the printed version of ENDBH 2001 in
the popular PDF file format. All you will need to read the data is to
install the Acrobat Reader software enclosed on the CD (in case you
don't have it already).
Having the NDB data available on your PC will allow you to easily
search for specific entries. And if you would still like a printed
version of the handbook, you can print it on your own now.
The CD contains some additional "bonus tracks" which I hope you'll
enjoy. This includes some NDB pictures and sounds plus software packages
to produce Great Circle maps and to calculate Great Circle distances and
bearings, respectively.
System requirements are a standard PC with CD-ROM drive and Microsoft
Windows 9x or Windows NT4.0 operating systems (it should also run on any
of the newer MS Windows operating systems).

*** Price ***

The price for the ENDBH 2001 and for the ENDBH CD 2001, respectively,
is DM 50.- / £20 / EURO 25 / US-$ 25 each. This includes postage and
packaging for European destinations. US customers have the choice of
surface mail delivery for US-$ 25 or airmail delivery for US-$ 35.

*** How to pay ***

If you prefer to use Eurocheques or IMOs you can make them payable to
the account number 100156926, BLZ 54850010, Sparkasse Landau.
If you want to avoid the high costs incurred by purchasing
International Money Orders or Eurocheques etc. you can always send your
payment in the form of Pound notes or Dollar bills. If you are using
this method though do be sure to take the usual precautions of
concealing them well inside your letter.
US customers can send standard US-$ checks.

*** Where to order ***

To get your copy please send your order and advance payment to the
following address: Michael Oexner, Hainfelder Str. 1, D-76835 Roschbach,
Germany.
If you require more information about the publication and have access
to e-mail you can also contact me at the following e-mail address:
michael.oexner@xxxxxx

*** Delivery time ***

All handbooks and CDs will be produced individually, so a production
time of 2 weeks should be expected. Surface mail delivery to the US can
add another 8 to 10 days.

>From the Dec 10 DX LISTENING DIGEST:

** U S A. A Letter from Jim Conder, Program Director, KVOD
The following letter/email went out to many KVOD listeners about our
recent purchase by Latino Communications. We'd like to share it here on
the website.
  December 7, 2000
  Dear KVOD listener,
I wish I could answer all of your questions individually, but time
will not permit. So, I am writing this "form e-mail" in response to
questions and to thank you for your overwhelming outpouring of kind
wishes and unforgettable memories. The situation is just this:
There are two business transactions going on. Latino Communications is
buying KVOD. That includes all the assets: the call-letters, the dial
position (1280), various equipment, and real-estate. Zee Ferrufino,
President of Latino Comm., has assured us that he will indeed flip the
format to Spanish-speaking on or about January 1, 2001. Mr. Ferrufino
has promised to donate the call-letters and the library of thousands of
CDs to Colorado Public Radio (KCFR, 90.1 FM).
The second business transaction involves CPR and their acquisition of
1340 AM. I do not feel comfortable addressing this transaction, because
my information has all been second hand and it yet has nothing to do
with the current KVOD. They will carry neither the Metropolitan Opera
nor Karl Haas` Adventures In Good Music nor have they contacted any of
the current KVOD staff about possible employment opportunities.
We will staff our station until 7PM on Friday, December 15th, at which
time we will all say goodbye and turn on the Beethoven Satellite Network
(from Chicago-very good, too), and that will stay on until Latino Comm.
decides to begin their new programming.
Many of you expressed concern about the "reasons" for the loss of
KVOD. The top reasons, naturally, have to do with money. Stations in
Denver are selling for tens of millions of dollars. KVOD was no longer
viable on FM to bring home the bacon for the large corporation that
owned us. As a result, we were systematically phased out with budget
cuts and neglect. We bravely hung in there despite the attempts to bury
us much earlier. That is why we thank you for your steadfast support
through the tough times.
Because of the lack of a promotional budget, we will not be holding
Beethoven`s Birthday this year. All of are disappointed not to see you
again this year. We truly miss that. For those of you on the Internet,
may I suggest searching out some other sites worldwide that have very
good programming that suits many tastes. On behalf of the entire staff
of KVOD, thank you for you well wishes and for your concern.
All the Best, Jim Conder, Program Director, KVOD
(http://www.kvod.com Dec 9 via DXLD)

Some other postings on the KVOD Listeners` Forum:
Contact Citizens for Classical FM at info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx They`ve been
working in the Denver area to restore classical music to the FM band in
the Metro area. Drop them a line to learn what you can do, or visit
their website at http://www.classicalfm.org for more info.
I will maintain the website and forum at KVOD.com beyond the December
15 date. However, if Latino or Colo Pub Radio takes the domain away from
me, you will find the site at KWGM.com So click here and then add this
link to your favorites or bookmarks: http://www.kwgm.com (webmaster;
kwgm are his initials, not a radio call!)
Try http://www.whrb.org. It's only classical about a third of the time
(normally from 11am - 8pm Denver time), but the programming includes
many vocal works, works of the twentieth century, historic performances,
and in-depth examinations of particular composers and genres, as well as
live performances from time to time. In January and May, look for WHRB's
renowned Orgy® programs (last January's J.S. Bach Orgy® lasted ten full
days and included every surviving piece by Bach, and a live organ
recital). (Orgy® is a registered trademark of The Harvard Radio
Broadcasting Company, Incorporated.) (Rob Landry, Nov 29)
Perhaps someone will fill the void locally with a quality classical
station, but until then there are many Internet based classical stations
from all over the world.

Various Net Radio offerings (piano, vocal, symphonic, etc.) Check the
Radio Station Guide page for the windows media player...
http://windowsmedia.com/radiotuner/default.asp
I will make the KVOD forum available through kwgm.com for those who
want to hang out, talk about classical music sources (or the lack of
them), remember old times, or whatever. I will also post an alternatives
list for classical listening on the web. I may even revive the
ClassiQuiz, Sig! So while it is a hard time, all is not lost. Thank you
for being a part of KVOD and using KVOD.com (and kwgm.com) (webmaster,

I just saw an interesting link to information on an experimental AM
broadcast antenna called the EH Antenna. It is somewhat similar to the
Crossed Field Antenna which is apparently becoming very popular in the
Middle East in that it is also a "short, fat" radiator. It is also very
controversial.
Apparently they have applied to the FCC for an experimental license on
1590 from northern Georgia.

I've just come home from a few days away and had a look at the new
WRTH 2001 edition, and had a look at the Australian listings.
I would like to offer my apologies for anyone who went an bought the
publication on the basis that the Australian listing has been updated as
was publicised here by us, which might have made people think up to date
information was being included.. I haven't checked other country lists
and don't have the knowledge to say whether they are close to correct or
not.
On behalf of the Australian Radio DX Club I spent a fair amount of
time checking the listings and sending an updated list in the layout
used by WRTH, and then to open it and find last year's section
duplicated for Australia makes me pretty angry. To put it on record, the
"payback" was a couple of ads for the ARDXC being included.
Basically, ignore any lists for Aussie expanded band stations in
there. Ignore the 1720 kHz listing in the frequency section, that died
15-20 years ago.
I will try and find the original document on my system and make it
available to anyone who wants a list for Australia that bears some
relation to reality.

My updates for Denmark, Faroe Isl. and Greenland in the radio section
of the new WRTH 2001 were all included - so it's not old stuff all of it
:-)
But don't believe the TV section for these countries. My updates here
were not included. Not this year nor last year or ... so very old info
here, I'm afraid.
Another thing; Isn't it way out that the majority of the WRTH Receiver
Review section is taken up by SCANNERS. What interest would a short wave
listener, a DX'er or a broadcaster (who are the readers of WRTH) have in
scanners!! The only "normal" short wave receivers tested are Roberts
R991 and a Grundig Satellit 800. Also a tranceiver (sic) called Yaesu
FT-840 is tested; don't think WRTH is read by many radio amateurs. Hmmm
