Russia adopted it's "new" national anthem on 1st January 2001, so
Radio Russia has had to adopt a new top-of-the-hour interval signal, as
the former one was based on the old anthem. Radio Russia plays an awful
orchestral version of the new anthem, sounding more like the warm-up
music for a bingo session than a national anthem, whilst Radio Mayak has
a rather more stirring choral version. Hear both versions of the anthem
and the new interval signal on the Interval Signals Archive at
http://www.intervalsignals.com

1305 Trafic Radio seems to have restarted this tx again with nonstop
music and traffic reports. Now mostly nonstopmusic. Very good signal in
southern Sweden during the evening though NRK on 1314 kHz is very
strong. The centre is Namur and their webpage
www.rtbf.be/radio/index.html
***Guido Schotmans - gs@xxxxxx
Interesting news Bengt. I didn't notice yet. This station is only
playing continuous pop mx and you have to ID it by a jingle. This is a
traffic station, and there are only announcements when there is traffic
jam. That's mostly not when DX-conditions are favourable. If you want
to catch some announcements try during European morning hours. Another
way to identify the station is comparing it with the parallels 1125 and
1233 kHz.

Hospital Radio Pulse. I was in Stratford-Upon-Avon on 12/27 and 12/28,
and Hospital Radio Pulse is definitely testing. Their signal gets out
extremely well. I really can't believe they are only 1 watt. Several
low-power hospital and university stations were active on 1350 kHz in
this part of England as we passed through.

From Dave Hughes' "DC Radio/TV" web site:
On 1/12 Brunswick MD's WTRI (1520 AM) started a relay of the Korean
programming currently heard on WKDV, 1460 AM, in Manassas, and on WPWC,
1480 AM, in Dumfries. We'd heard a while back that both WTRI and WPWC
were being purchased by JMK for Korean programming. WKDV is owned by
Multicultural along with Arlington's WZHF (1390 AM) and Warrenton's WKCW
(1420 AM). For the past few months, 1520 has either been off the air or
playing MIDI music.
More Mega musical chairs. 1600 AM, WKDM in Rockville is now (as of
1/8) carrying Mega's Spanish language "Radio Capital" Central
American/Mexican programming which is also carried on 730 AM, WKDL
(formerly WBZS) in Alexandria. Previously, 1600 carried the music/talk
mix of Radio Unica. The Central American program used to be carried on
Mega's 1050 AM, WPLC-AM (then WKDL) in Silver Spring which last year
flipped to a relay of its "Amor" love songs format which is also carried
on Warrenton's WPLC-FM, 94.3.

Beasley Broadcasting is at it again! After moving the WTEL call again
from 860 in Philadelphia to 1160-NC in November, they've now restored
the WYRU calls on 1160, and moved the WTEL calls to 1630 in Augusta, GA,
which was formerly WAWX, although they've mostly been heard // WRDW-
1480. Got that ?
Info from the FCC's 1/4/01 Call Changes release, as gleaned from the
FCC Daily Digest for that date, as the "Index of Callsign Changes" URL
has had problems this year. ( Ho hum! ).
The URL for that is

Thanks to a tip from ex-DXer Jon Pearkins: CKLG-730 Vancouver will
become CJNW soon (February?). It will be news or news/talk. It's part
of the Corus network and the call is obviously to connect it with sister
station CKNW-980.
I followed up with a visit to Northwest Broadcaster web page for more
info -- see URL below
If my memory serves me, the LG of CKLG was Lions Gate, a reference to
the bridge that connects Vancouver with the north shore & North
Vancouver (where LG was originally licenced). (Also the NW in CKNW
similarly refers to original city of licence, New Westminster.)

660 MEXICO XEAR, Tampico, TAMA, JAN 11 1150-1230. Presumed this one
in the 660 dog pile with "La Mexicana" slogan at 1155, and
"...... en Tampico" at 1200. At least three Mexicans fighting it
out here this AM. Two ran the national anthem around 1200.
(Bryant-OK)
660 MEXICO XEDTL, Mexico, DF, JAN 11 1220-1250 - This one with a
morning show of romantic music and lots of ads. Call letter ID by
male at 1230 and 1245. I believe the third one was XEFZ,
Monterrey. (Bryant - OK)
850 MEXICO XEZR, Zaragosa, COAH, JAN 01 1145 - Presume this the one
heard carrying a morning music program hosted by female ann. with
numerous mentions of Zaragosa. Fair to good in KOA semi-null.
(Bryant-OK)
900 MEXICO XEOK, Monterrey, SON, JAN 11 1155 - All talk from tune-in
until call letter ID at 1202 and then into music. No slogan.
Rather pleased to hear this 1000/250 w. penny whistle beneath the
300000 watts of XEW + XEWB. (Bryant-OK)
1430 MEXICO XEWD Cuidad Miguel Aleman, TAMA JAN 01 0315 - Music
program hosted by male was atop the pile for a while, with a
clear ID as XE doubl OO Day. Hard to believe that they were
running their listed night power of 150 w. rather than their
daytime 2 Kw. They sank back into the jumble before 0400, but I
believe that I heard their s/off down there somewhere. Noted the
Mexican NA at their scheduled s/on of exactly 1155, but signal
too weak to hear ID following. (Bryant-OK)

Since 2300 EST I have hearing the island of Martinique. They are on
1540 kc with English IDs and french Caribbean music. The ID is "1540 and
FM 101 Martinique" "We will be here till 1 o'clock" (They might have
been saying FM 104 not sue.)
Their signal is from an S 6 to and S9, over riding KXEL and CHIN.
I first them on the car radio as I was leaving downtown Chattanooga,
listened all the way home. Not bad signal for so far away.
**Doug Smith W9WI - w9wi@xxxxxxxx
I strongly suspect this station *is* CHIN.
They do have an FM relay on 101.3. And they've been heard with
Caribbean programming in English - I would not consider French-language
lyrics in music to be too much of a stretch. Finally, they are the
dominant signal on 1540 around Nashville at night, and sometimes really
do just *bomb* in.

After seeing a report of someone logging their first TA last night, I
decided to make time to DX & try myself. No luck with the TA's, but did
pretty well in the other direction:
680 KNBR CA San Francisco - fair copy in mess "ESPN Radio on 680
KNBR". (DS-TN)
910 WSUI IA Iowa City - "WSUI AM 910" ID, nostalgia/MOR music good,
well above the competition. (DS-TN)
1010 CBR AB Calgary - 1/18 0207 presume them with classical music,
parallel to CBC Radio One Calgary feed on Internet. (NOT parallel
to R. Netherlands feed on CBW-990, the only CBC I can get
reliably by radio these days!) Poor fighting with WINS and
unIDs. (DS-TN)
1060 UNID ?? - 1/18 0205 CNN Radio News about even with KYW, which was
also carrying CNN items but not in parallel. Sounded like the
unID was also all-news. (DS-TN)
1070 KNX CA Los Angeles - 1/18 0153 way over unID nostalgia station
with calls in end of news story, ad for group of Chevy dealers in
Santa Paula, Temecula, and several other Southern California
cities. Not heard this well in ages. (DS-TN)
1250 KCNZ IA Iowa Falls - 1/18 0200 legal ID for KDNZ-1650 (gave
frequency) and into CBS news. No ID for 1250 given. About even
with unID classical station and one with soul oldies.
1250 UNID ?? - 1/18 0139 classical music fair over & under KCNZ.
Probably KKGM-KS. KCNZ was dominant at ID time. (DS-TN)
1350 KRNT IA Des Moines - 1/18 0145 sung ID "Central Iowa's KRNT",
nostalgia/MOR music. Very good. (DS-TN)
Kenwood TS-940 ham rig & 400' east-west wire at 1' above ground.

as WTOW in 1979. (MKB-ON)

Anybody looking for HLAZ-1566, please note that during their broadcast

period. Good luck.

Heard on a GE Superadio:
550 KLLV CO, Breen 1/13 0051 playing country style gospel music in an
extremely tight null of KFYI.
810 WGY NY, Albany 1/14 0000 was looking for WHB in a KGO null and up
came a food.com ad right before the ToH ID and it was WGY then
into ABC news. The signal came up about 2357 and by 0002 it was
under KGO and then it was gone to a SS station at 0004. It was
one of those fluky things that happen and make the hobby fun.
Heard on an Optimus 12-603A with RS 15-1853 loop:
1410 XECF MEXICO, Los Mochis, Sinaloa 1/15 1503 with ads for Orando
grocery store, Baseball, La Gran Baile en Sinaloa. Uses the
slogan "La Mexicana". ID at 1505.
Heard on an Optimus 12-603A:
690 XERG MEXICO, Monterrey, NL 1/161200 playing music under XETRA in a
null spot playing national anthem and TOH ID. Uses the slogan,
"La Deportiva." [new]
940 KGMS AZ. Tucson 0600 KCEE apparently is not around anymore and is
now REL KGMS. New call at TOH ID. NOS is gone. Was talking about
putting channel 29 on the air "Praise TV" and asking listeners to
call the cable carriers to carry them.
Yes these are 50 kW blow torches and for lots of you they are easily
heard. For me they are rare. The California stations were on lower power
off and on over the rolling power shortages and this is what I heard
last night. The conditions were interesting with all the problems
California was having and the log on KHTK troubles me because the
totally useless and vestigial FCC will do nothing about what is in this
log.
Heard on a DX-440 barefoot:
560 KSFO CA, San Francisco 1/18 0109 with Coast to Coast and under
extreme splash from KFYI and under NOS KLZ.
700 WLW OH, Cincinnati 1/18 0119 with the weather and an ID.
720 WGN IL, Chicago 1/18 0130 ID and interviewing a computer geek and
asking for call in questions for him. Gave phone number 591-7200
and then a Joint-Ritis ad.
780 WBBM IL, Chicago 1/18 0145 had on old radio show, "When Radio Was"
with Stan Freberg. Then ID and ad for home show in Palatine.
840 WHAS KY, Louisville 1/18 0200 with ToH ID and then news.
1000 KOMO WA, Seattle 1/18 0759 America in the Morning then ToH ID,
"KOMO is Newstalk 1000, KOMO, Seattle, heard worldwide on
KOMO1000.com." then into news.
1130 KWKH LA, Shreveport 1/18 0806 "You're listening to the sports
station, 1130 KWKH, Shreveport." First time heard as a sports
station.
1140 KHTK CA, Sacramento 1/18 0808 ID and into disgusting sports talk
about who at the station deserves a penis enlargement. Where the
hell is the FCC? What a useless arm of thee government. This
stuff is common and needs to stop.

Hi all, wondering if I can get some help on a station I heard last
night (1/11) on 1320. Station was fading in and out with what sounded
like French talk. Then at 9 PM hoping for an ID at the top of the hour
but it faded out! OF COURSE! Came back on about 9:05 with middle eastern
sounding music. I see there is a station in Hollywood, Florida "WLQY"
that broadcasts programs in different ethnics. Them???? I know this
isn't much but anything would be grateful!
**Sheldon Harvey - ve2shw@xxxxxxxxx
I think the more likely candidate on this frequency, given your
location, might be CJMR in Mississauga, Ontario. They have a grab bag of
various ethnic programming, and given a 20 kw. power rating, day and
night, this would probably be more likely than Florida at 5000 watts.

Just heard an unid on 1650. Started listening at 1708 EST, heard song
"Summertime" from Porgy & Bess, sung by male artist; then male DJ
identifying himself as "Larry C", saying something about it being a
"honeydew Saturday"; then Dionne Warwick with "What the World Needs
Now"; song by a male artist; and finally Bread with "I Wanna Make it
With You". A sports station faded in loudly on top at 1719.

This morning I heard a new, fairly strong signal on 1610 in/out with
the Valley Forge Park station. This was rebroadcasting a NOAA weather
station apparently based at Atlantic City (NJ) International Airport. I
wasn't able to hold it in solidly long enough to see if any local ID's
were present. There is an Atlantic City Convention & Visitor's Bureau
TIS ( WPIR381) on the channel, and given the strength, I'd not expect it
to actually be in Atlantic City. I suspect it's something closer in
Southern NJ. No new listings are noted on the FCC database. I'll have to
mobile around into a good position and spend some more time on it...

This site is worth a visit at http://www.nwlink.com/~kc7ldp
"A comprehensive web site about the history of the world's premiere
broadcasting reference source."
Hopefully, this web site will turn into one of the most detailed and
accurate sources for information about the World Radio-TV Handbook in
all its forms.
The World Radio Handbook has been published every year since 1947. The
winter edition or first edition for 1947 was released in November; the
second edition, May-November 1948, was completed in May 1948 and the
third edition was printed for November 1948-May 1949 and was released in
November. The fourth edition seems to be the first full-year edition
printed, although there is still some confusion on this. The fifth
edition covers both 1950/1951.
If information contrary to this presents itself, I will immediately
update this site to reflect the facts.
The World Radio Handbook appears to have had quarterly updates from
1954 until 1959 known as the World Radio Bulletin. These continued until
1991, different only in name; the Bulletin, Newsletter and Downlink.
From 1960 until 1971, the WRTH also published its Summer Supplement;
which in 1967 and 1969 reached 184 pages! Half again the size of the
yearly WRTH. Site link below.
Another publication by the WRH/WRTH was 'Listen To The World'. These
books contained various articles about DXing and SW listening and
appears to have been published since 1950 until 'Listen To The World'
was incorporated into the WRTH in 1976. In 1978 another publication made
its debut, 'World DX Guide', which was in the exact size and format as
LTTW. A site link to 'Listen To The World' is included.

Cincinnati Radio-TV personality Bob Braun, who lost his battle with
cancer and Parkinson's disease on Monday, was a show-business
professional to the very end. As he lay dying, surrounded by family, he
talked about making a radio comeback in a voice that had been reduced to
a whisper by Parkinson's. "As late as Sunday morning, he told me, "If I
could just go back to work, I'd be happy,'" said his son, Rob, news
anchor at WKRC-TV. "He always talked of a comeback. That's all he wanted
to do was work. It was his love." Mr. Braun, 71, was part of Cincinnati
broadcasting for more than 50 years. In the late 1960s and early 1970s,
he was the Tristate's biggest TV star. The Ludlow native inherited
WLWT's top-rated 50-50 Club in 1967, when Ruth Lyons retired. He hosted
the show 17 years, until it was canceled in 1984, and helped raise
millions for Ruth Lyons' Children's Fund. At its peak, the Bob Braun
Show was broadcast in nine other cities: Dayton, Columbus, Lexington,
Louisville, Indianapolis, Huntington and Charleston, W.Va., and
Nashville and Knoxville Tenn. The regional exposure allowed Mr. Braun to
attract an "A" list of entertainers: Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Dick Clark
(his personal favorites), Duke Ellington, Perry Como, Bill Cosby, Ronald
and Nancy Reagan, Mel Torme, Rowan and Martin, Merv Griffin and a young
comic named Jay Leno. (Cincinnati Enquirer)

From The Times of India, Jan. 17 2001:
AIR Vadodara to computerise rare works By Jahnavi Contractor
VADODARA: The All India Radio's Vadodara station here is soon to
embark on a computerisation project to protect the rare collection of
audio records of eminent musicians, playwrights, artists and
litterateurs housed in its archives.
The computerisation exercise is aimed at not only saving the classics
but also at improving the sound quality. All rare records would be
recorded onto CDs, which would help in improving and sharpening the
broadcast quality.
The unique collection of the AIR here includes radio plays in
Chandravadan (Chanchi) Mehta's voice, Ustad Faiyaz Khan's raga
collections, talks and readings by well-known Gujarati poets and
novelists amongst others.
The station also has an in-house library of books relating to eminent
personalities featured on its records.
Vadodara Akashvani' station director Bhagirath Pandya told 'The Times
of India' that computerisation of records and conversion of all rare
audio tapes has already begun in the AIR Ahmedabad station. A similar
project would start soon in Vadodara's library too, he informed.
Also, there are many old Gujarati film songs and other material not
available with all radio stations. The Ahmedabad AIR is in the process
of copying these onto CDs, which would later be sent to all other units
for broadcast.
This would improve the sound quality and clarity of radio broadcasts
and avoid deterioration in quality of sound irrespective of the number
of times it is used, he said. At present, the entire archival material
is in form of tape spools which could deteriorate over the years.
"We have recently created a special record room to house the
increasing number of records that are added to our archives. While all
the new records are now in CD format, the old ones have to be compiled
on floppies so that damage is minimised. Those records, which have aged
or are in a bad condition, are currently in the process of being dubbed.
Later, we want to acquire a CD writer and other equipment that would
help us in copying these onto CDs," he says.
Parul Bhoota, who is in charge of the records section at the AIR here,
said she is undergoing a special computer training programme for
maintenance of all audio records in a computerised format. "This
training project is a nation-wide one and the accent is on developing a
software that can be used in all AIR stations for maintaining records in
a similar fashion," she says.
According to Pandya, Vadodara has a rich history in arts, music and
literature and, therefore, the AIR here has had the opportunity to
feature many local artists who have then went on to become nationally
recognized figures like Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Mitali Singh (nee Mukherjee)
"Our collection is therefore rare. It would be difficult now to find
gramophone records of Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Shivkumar Shukla and recording
of radio plays in the voice of C C Mehta, interviews and readings by
eminent Gujarati litterateurs like Suresh Joshi Lalji Nanda, and many
others," he says.
"The collections also include interviews of these eminent Gujarati
litterateurs and theatre personalities. There is a special section on
local folk songs, Bhavais, and tribal music of tribes living in and
around Vadodara," says Pandya.
According to him, in most cases the old collections are not used.
However, this year being the centenary year celebrations of Chanchi
Mehta, each week a radio play in C C Mehta's voice is broadcast on
Vividh Bharati every Thursday at 6.15 pm.
The All India Radio Vadodara's archives has a rare collection of audio
programmes, including play readings by C C Mehta, interviews and talks
by Gujarat's eminent litterateurs and musicians.
A special project to preserve this archival material is to be
launched.

Pat Martin has asked me for an update on KJR. Since I am six miles
from their new site, I have some sensitivity regarding this matter (or
at least my ICF 2010 does!).
Obviously KJR was just testing two weeks ago when it was blowing out
my receiver. It is very easy for me to differentiate between when they
are on from the KHHO site and when they are coming from their original
site. When they are coming from their old site, I can null them to some
extent (the LEDs on the 2010 show a signal strength drop). Also, in
terms of loop positioning, it comes from a different reciprocal
direction than KHHO. When they were testing from the KHHO site, (1) I
got the harmonic on 1900 (noted at night) and (2) 900-990 was white-
noised out (daytime), eliminating my reception of KIXT-930, KUPL-970 and
CKNW-980. As of this writing, 1/17/01 at 12:10M PST, KHHO and KJR are
coming from different directions and are still to some extent nullable,
so I can say for sure that KJR is not at this time either 50kw or coming
from the KHHO site. The old site, incidentally, is in Seattle and not
Mercer Island.
During the past two months, I have never been able to connect with
anyone in engineering when I have called the station and none of my
numerous voice mail messages have been returned (Pat has experienced the
same thing). This makes it very difficult to find out what's going on
(they were scheduled to make the switch last November). Obviously they
are having some problems meeting pattern specs while diplexing with
KHHO. Early articles also mentioned they were going to improve KHHO's
signal so perhaps they are making an adjustment on that, too (although I
haven't seen reference to this in FCC stuff).
The owners, the Ackerley family, just took a full page ad to thank
fans for their support of the Supersonics, which they have owned the
last 17 years but have sold to the owner of Starbucks. It is my guess
there will be some publicity attached to the move. Since I do not
appreciate the format or the new splatterama audio processing equipment
they have recently installed ("supersonics" certainly does not describe
their audio quality), and since I do not look forward to their band-
destroying move - I am not a masochist - it is with some trepidation
that I pursue this on an organized, ongoing basis (i.e., I will not be
listening to KJR for "power" promos). However, for the benefit of all
those new potential listeners in the target areas of Nunavit and
Scandinavia, I will check 'em out with some regularity and let all of
you know when my house is subjected to their blurting, nasal resonance
on a broadband, permanent basis.

normal on 1386 kHz on January 15th and Mikhail Timofeyev today confirmed
that - as of January 15th LBH Radio is on the air 2100-0200 UTC. This
means that regular listeners to the English service of Voice of Russia
