Bruce Portzer's annual DX Get-together. This year it will be on
Saturday, February 17, beginning at 2 p.m. Here's a chance to meet
other radio listeners and talk about hobby stuff - medium wave, SWBC,
utility, TV/FM, or whatever flavor of listening you like to do.
Feel free to bring stuff like receivers, QSL cards, antennas, and
other paraphernalia to show off or demonstrate. Please bring a potluck
snack or something to drink. At dinner time, we'll pass the hat around
and order some pizzas.
My address is 6546 19th Avenue NE, Seattle WA 98115. It's not hard
to find, since the streets are numbered and parallel around here. But
if you need directions, let me know.
If you have questions or want to RSVP, my phone number is 206-522-
2521. I hope to see you there.

The North Otago Branch of the New Zealand Radio DX League is hosting
another convention.
All DXers are invited to join us at Camp Iona, near Oamaru, from
Friday the 1st of February till Monday the 4th (three nights).
Participants in the past have joined us from Australia, Japan, Finland
and Denmark.
At the suggestion of participants during the 1998 Convention, and
depending on interest, we are also holding a three night DXpedition at
the camp on 29th, 30th and 31st of January before the convention proper.
This is to give the real DXers amongst us, the opportunity to experience
listening in a very quiet environment outside of the Convention's
organised activities.
If you're interested in any or both of the events, please let me know.
Please visit the following links to our previous conventions:
  Convention 94 - http://radiodx.com/spdxr/Convention_94.htm
  Convention 98 - http://radiodx.com/spdxr/Convention_98.htm
Updates will be posted at: Convention 20002 -

WAGL test results (*** - from NRC reflector, used by permission)

Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park PQ ***. DX Test being heard here in
Montreal at 0600 UTC, January 20, with Radio Disney in New York slightly
nulled. Opening announcements for IRCA test with call letters and
history of radio station. Into open carrier until 0605, then Morse code
ID, into marching music

Larry Hall, Sr, Downers Grove IL ***, DX test in progress Picked up
west of Chicago. Carrier, Code, March music, Voice. Strong signal

Rick Shaftan, Sparta NJ ***, "DXers everywhere this is a special DX Test
of the International Radio Club of America." Morse code, marching
music, mention of Larry's report from Chicagoland. On top of Disney at
45 miles away with the phaser on the longwire, weaker on the loop.

Pat Martin, Seaside OR, fair u/Bakersfield with March mx at 0130 EST
1/20.

Mike Brooker, Toronto ON ***, They're getting chewed up by !#$%^&&*
Disney, but one voice ID mentioning 50,000 watt power was heard. Not
needed, as I heard WAGL on SSS in 1978. QSLed with v/l, rate card and
nice multi-colored coverage map. The counties are different colours, so
it looks like they cover some 20 states!

Nick Hall-Patch, Victoria BC, yes, it made it to Victoria. Around 0139
EST, got a reasonable null on KNZR, and heard a man mention WAGL, PO
Box....9721...South Carolina, and www.wagl????.com, then KNZR faded back
up. Really nice surprise. Thanks, Lynn.

Pete Taylor, Tacoma WA, No WAGL on 1560 here - just KNZR and 1-mile-away
KKMO-1360 overload.

Phil Greenspan, Marshfield MA ***, WQEW blasting here. Could here
underneath male voice. At approximately 0110 heard #'s being read off,
at 0120 Male Voice and the words north-northwest. Finally at 0124
"please send your confirmation letters to WAGL......South Carolina. No
code or music heard as Radio Disney never takes a breath. Sony SW7600G
with selectattenna

kevin redding, Mesa AZ, Not heard in Mesa, AZ. Too much KNZR.

Steve Howe, St Albans VT, WAGL fighting it out with WQEW (and generally
losing) during their DX test 1/20 from 0109-0144 EST with lots of
announcements, march mx, and Morse code IDs, heard from St. Albans, VT.
Called station at 0122 and had quick chat with Len Phillips. While
listening to the test, I was looking fondly at the QSL I received from
Harry Helms when he conducted a WAGL DX test in March, 1971. Seems
impossible for 30 years to have gone by so fast! Thanks for arranging
this one, Lynn!

 HOT ITEMS

Glen Kippel - Palm Desert CA - khcs@xxxxxxxx

Note: effective today, 1/18/01, the Desert Radio Group has done a
format flip-flop on some of their local stations. The news-talk format
"K-News" is now on 970 KNWQ Coachella and 1140 KNWZ Palm Springs. The
Nostalgia format formerly on 970/1140 has moved to 1010 (formerly
KNWZ)and is now "10-10 Memories," KCMJ, Thousand Palms. So the KCMJ
callsign, which has been in use here since 1946, has moved back to the
original frequency, but with a new city of license.

1680 KAVT CA, Fresno is on the air tonight running rather mod
modulation and Radio Disney. Per an e mail I received from the CE
tonight, they just got on the air a few hours ago and will be running 1
KW for a while, until the diplexing and the 10 KW in in place. Got get
em'. Logged 0300 EDT 1/19. (PM-OR)
KAVT-1680 is running mismatched a bit at the KXEX site according to
the CE for a while. That is the reason the modulation is weak. That will
change soon I am told. They are running 1 KW days and 840 watts at night
right now. The modulation seems like about 20% here. Last night it
seemed better.

While listening tonight I noticed CJOC 1220 Lethbridge has gone.
Unlike CJXX they haven't been running any kind of announcements about
shutting off the AM.
No one station is dominating here in their absence, with about 4
audible in a mess as I type this. It was nice to hear CJRL Kenora there
a few minutes ago, and that was with just a random wire antenna, as
Ontario is pretty rare around here. Although I'm not complaining, I'm
not sure why I'm not getting CJRB, unless they have a null this
direction to protect CJOC.
Got a verie letter today for CJRX, the FM replacement for CJOC, and it
states that CJOC went off on January 19th, so apparently I noticed them
missing the same day they went off.
I see I forgot to mention another station I bagged on 1220 earlier
this week, that being CHSC in St.Catherines. They were on top for about
10 minutes before fading under CJRL and KDDR. I don't know if I've ever
heard two Ontario stations simultaneously like that before! I'm
certainly enjoying the new empty 1220!

All Access Radio (http://www.allaccessradio.com/) reports that KCEE-
940 Tucson, AZ is swapping places with KGMS-97.1 Green Valley, AZ. KGMS
will move it's Christian format to 940 kHz, while KCEE takes it's Adult
Standards format to 97.1 MHz. Moving formats between AM and FM stations
is nothing new; back in the 1980s, a number of CHR stations went over to
FM frequencies from AM (the case that sticks out in my mind was the
KSLY/KUNA swap in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1983-84, when KUNA relocated
it's Easy Listening format to 1400 kHz from 96.1 MHz, while KSLY moved
it's CHR format from 1400 to 96.1).

CKUA (AM 580 Edmonton, and about 20 FMs around Alberta) has applied
for 24-hr broadcasting, citing two reasons:
  1) their world wide internet audience is in various time zones and 24
hour broadcasting makes much more sense
  2) this would give them a 'training' slot for on-air talent
For anyone not familiar with CKUA (aka Access), they are my favorite
source of new music (folk, jazz, pop.)

I was listening to some interference in the form of a jammer believe
it or not on 1140 here in Phoenix.
I decided to call my old buddy, the moderator of the AMFMTVDX list,
Rick Lewis and we were listening and trying to triangulate the jammer to
no avail when "1140 Cruisin Oldies" from Las Vegas got run over by Dr.
Laura.
This was an unusual situation for us so we kept chatting on the phone
as it was 3 minutes to the bottom of the hour at 1727. We could only
think of Vegas "Cruisin Oldies" and the NOS from Palm Springs, CA and
the only other one that came to mind with Dr. Laura was WRVA and we
weren't hearing them.
An ID came up and it was KCLB 970 // to KCMJ 1140. Looks like they may
have changed from NOS to talk and if anyone nearer can verify, I would
greatly appreciate it.

KBLE-1050 is back on the air after a couple months of silence. They
now carry the Catholic Radio Network EWTN, IDing as "Catholic Radio for
the Pacific Northwest". First noted back on at 2330 1/18, probably 24
hrs now as they were on when I checked at 4am local time the next day
(they used to be 0600-2400 LT).

I tuned in this afternoon to find 1230 playing Old Rock. Calling
themselver "The New 1230, The KITE. Don't know if the call letters have
changed, but they were C&W last night, now OLD. Today also the new FM
licensed to Ilwaco WA came on and they are C&W. Apparently running the
old KVAS format.

1230 KKEE OR, Astoria, ID at TOH 'KKEE Astoria The New Kyte" At
2259.50 EST 1/21. (PM-OR)
103.9 KVAS WA, Ilwaco, Long Beach, Astoria" at 2358 EST 1/21. (PM-OR)

So KVAS went to 103.9 (C&W) and the Oldies format on 94.3 went to
1230. At the moment 94.3 is silent, so I don't know what they will do
with that as yet.

VoA began testing its MW transmitter in Abu Dhabi (UAE)from 15.30 to
21.30 UT on 1314 kHz, using the signal of the VoA News Now. The
broadcast is heard fairly well in Southern Russia, especially after
19.00 UT.

The following was posted by DalePatterson on the New York Radio Board.
"It was confirmed today that CHUM-AM will end music programming in
April for an all-sports format.
This will end nearly 44 years of music programming at Canada's first
full-time Top 40 station.
CHUM has dismissed its afternoon host, Russ McCloud (even though he's
still on the web site). The only time CHUM has a live jock now is from
6-9 a.m.
Apparently CHUM plans a huge goodbye with on-air visits from former
personalities during the last two weeks.
Truly the end of an era, 19 years after WABC's great Musicradio era
came to an end.

970 PORTLAND FORMAT CHANGE. I tuned in after 0300 EST (0800 UTC) 1/24
and found 970 Portland playing 50s/60s old rock. "Crusin' Oldies AM 970"
so far the ID. I'll have to wait until TOH for an ID. Checked their FM
KUPL-98.7 and they are still C&W, so probably a call change on 970.
970 Portland OR is still KUPL, no call change, just format from C&W to
Oldies.

650 WJLT MA Ashland - 1/17 1700-1707 - Dual ID for WJLT and WSRO-
1470, USA Radio News, then "you're listening to the (?)
broadcasting network, AM 1470 and AM 650, serving Marlborough,
Hudson and all of metro...", promo for live broadcast, ads for
busnesses in Marlborough. Not strong, but they had the channel to
themselves. They should have powered down their mighty 250 Watts
at 1645, though! Still there when I rechecked at 1800. (BM-ON)
660 KTNN AZ Window Rock - 1/14 0130-0135 Probably the one with CNN
news under WFAN... it was late and I had ID'ed them back in
December, so didn't stay with it. I hear them quite often of
late, making me suspect that they're not using their DA at night,
       or it's broken. (BM-ON)
 660 WMIC MI Sandusky - 1/14 0659 - S/on with legal ID, mentioning 1
KW daytime power and 500 W pre-sunrise authorization, into ABC
news, fair with partially nulled WFAN. (BM-ON)
1140 WKWM MI Kentwood - 1/15 2159-2205 - Motown-type music, then at
TOH: "another hour of groovin' oldies is at WKWM Kentwood", good
over nulled WRVA. Also heard late the previous evening, but
       they're supposed to be a daytimer. (BM-ON)
1360 WKYO MI Caro - 1/18 0705-0707 - "AM 1360 WKYO" ID, weather with
mentions of Caro, then into more "new country", fair in mess.
       New. (BM-ON)
1360 WWOW OH Conneaut - 1/18 1906 - Emerged from jumble with "lock on
to wwowradio.com...", then gone. New. (BM-ON)
1460 KXNO IA Des Moines - 1/19 0106 - Briefly heard in mess of
stations led by CJOY, with "you're listening to... sports news...
KXNO Des Moines", poor. Also likely them with Fox Sports non-IDs.
       New. (BM-ON)
1520 WQCTp OH Bryan - 1/13 1710-1720 - Probably the one with standards
(e.g., "Dancing Cheek to Cheek"), then promo mentioning website
at musicofyourlife.com, fighting it out with WWKB. They're the
only 1520 mentioned on the website. Does KOLM run MYL now?(BM-ON)
1520 UNID __ _____ - 1/14 1619 - Faded up over WWKB, sounding like
gospel preacher, but pushing a weight loss plan (call 1-800-416-9143),
       then gone. (BM-ON)
1540 WADK RI Newport - 1/13 1620 - Good in fadeup over semi-nulled
CHIN and a subdued WPTR, with ID "you're listening to WADK AM
1540, Newport County's first choice for news, talk and a little
smooth jazz", back into jazz and then lost under the biggies.
       New. (BM-ON)
1560 WTNS OH Coshocton - 1/13 1652-1654 - C&W, ID "this is today's
country, WTNS 1560 AM", briefly over WQEW and WATJ. New. (BM-ON)
1560 WATJ OH Chardon - 1/13 1650-1707 - In dogfight with WQEW and
others, then amazingly climbed on top at TOH: "Chardon... all the
news you need, it's WATJ 1560", into CNN news, then "at home, at
work, or in the car, we play the most music - we're WATJ 1560",
into honky-tonk piano music. New. (BM-ON)
1560 WAGL SC Lancaster - 1/20 0100-0130 - DX test, heard off and on as
I fought to get a null on 50,000-pound Disney gorilla WQEW.
Morse code IDs and march music came through the din quite well,
and also heard some voice announcements including their phone no.
       New. (BM-ON)
1570 WRJQ WI Appleton - 1/14 1759 - Popped up in the clear just before
TOH: "now broadcasting 24 hours a day, we're WRJQ Appleton", into
standards. Not new, but uncommon. (BM-ON)
1600 WKKX WV Wheeling - 1/8 1634 - Business Talk Radio, ID "AM 1600,
this is the new WKKX, Wheeling, West Virginia", good, briefly on
top of the pack. New. (BM-ON)

DX Test:

1560 WAGL SC Lancaster - 01/20, 0130 - getting killed by virtually un-
nullable WQEW and even some CHIN-1540 slop, heard only bits of
march music and one mention of "50,000 watts of power". QSLed
in 1978, so not needed. (MKB-ON)

Other stuff:

940 CJGX SK Yorkton - 01/20, 0735 - fair in CINW null, local sports

810 strange (like open AC circuit) hum when I null KGO and apparent
carrier pretty strong 1/21 at 0215 but less strong at 0230.
       KTBI? Sturgis SD?
990 stable buzz about 989.5 cutting into an unknown SS on 990. My
original guess was KATD on day pattern. Thought I heard "Gran T"
(which would make it XET) but also thought I heard the "Zeta"
       jingle. 1/21 0221
1680 KAVT carrier is on (3rd or 4th time I've noticed this over the

A note on the Kiwa Pocket Loop and Regeneration Module: So far, I've
been pleased with the loop. I've been able to pull in many new
stations, especially on the X-band. However, I'm still getting the hang
of the Regen Module. If set too high, it has a tendency to pick up
strong locals elsewhere on the dial. For instance, my local on 1450
appears from about 1350 to 1550 with the Regen Module set too high.
Adjusted just right, the Regen Module does help to bring some signals
out of the mud. The only difficulty I've had is getting the antenna
shipped. It took about six weeks after placing the order, and it
arrived without the cable or coupler to the internal antenna. It took
about another week to get the cable and I'm still waiting for the
coupler.

I tried for the WAGL 1560 DX test over the weekend, but there was no
way to pick out anything under Radio Disney from NYC. Still, thanks for
doing the test!

I have an unid on 870 and have been frustrated by fades at the ToH. They
are SS and play Mexican EZL/CLA and use the slogan R. Formula.

Pat Martin

Could this be NV on 870? They are SSand are heard up here often.

*kevin redding - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

This doesn't mean anything but that R.Formula comes in with my radio
facing 000/180. That may help. Las Vegas is at 045/315. I have them in a
weak KIEV and WWL soupy null.

**David Gleason - david@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]

Perhaps you are hearing (Radio) Recuerdo, the name of KLSQ LAs Vegas
since August. FOrmat is SS oldies o all kinds, including ballads, soft
ranchera, trios and pop from the 60's, mostly, although there are some
songs form the 50's and a few from the early 70's. This format debuted
on KESS-Dallas-1270 last Monday, and will be on KAMA-750 El Paso this
week. It is also on KTNQ-1020 in LA daytime hours form 5 AM to 7 PM.

**kevin redding - mailto:lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

  The R. Formula site only lists 970, 1470, 1500, 103.3 and 104.1. If
thats the whole network, perhaps I heard an ad at the ToH. All I know
was that I was hearing Mexican EZL/CLA on 870 and it appears that it was
KLSQ.
Well, the station was fadey and at the hour the R. Formula ID came
out. I did hear the "Recuerdo" on 870 so possibly I heard both stations.
I tried to bring up the audio from KLSQ and couldn't because I am using
NT and the web site didn't like it too much. The site would not trigger
my WMP to bring up the station. It must have been KLSQ but now that
leaves me to wonder what the deal was with R. Formula, whether it was
just an ad or an ID. I had never heard of R. Formula before last night.

**David Gleason - david@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]

There are about 35 Radio Formula stations all over the country. 100%
news/talk. No sports, though.
The frequencies you metion are all Mexico City, and are the Grupo
Radio Formula stations; on air, Radio Formula is one of the formats of
the group of the same name. Sort of like the 1030 AM in Mexico City
being Radio Centro and the 790-1110-1150-1320-1560 stations all being
part of Grupo Radio Centro.
Does the IRCA Mexican log show the Formula net? If it does not, I have
a listing from about 3 months ago of the stations I can post if anyone
cares. (IRCA Mexican Log shows noone with R Formula ID on 870 - pb)

Just received a 333K electronic WTIR verie. It is identical to the
attractive heavy stock one I received last year signed by Merle Isaacson
except that all the shields have been cut off around the edge. His was
postmarked from somewhere in Georgia so perhaps he was a consultant. It
is a snazzy looking verie, obviously from someone who takes pride in
what he does and who knows what DXers appreciate.
This one is signed by David Chase as CE, who thanks me for listening
to "Tirn." That stands for Traveler's Information Radio Network and
that's what the station is under when you call information (I couldn't
get a phone number asking for "WTIR.") If you have an old pending
report into the station, he may be reached at <Nyles31@xxxxxx>
The verie is wider than it is tall so if you want it intact rather
than having to paste two pieces together, you'll probably have to print
it at about 65%.
WJNZ, KTBK, WTIR and even, finally, KQXX are all X-banders who I am
sure were swamped with reports but who eventually came around with
attractive veries.
And speaking of attractive X-band veries, thank you very much PAT

LEBANON
New pro-Israel, anti-Syria radio heard broadcasting to Lebanon
A previously-unheard radio station calling itself "The Experimental
Radio from the Mediterranean Basin" (Arabic: al-idha'ah al-tajribiyah
min hawd al-mutawassit) has been heard since 23 December on the
mediumwave frequency of 756 kHz. It is clearly aimed at a Lebanese
audience.
The same frequency was used in the past by a pro-Israeli radio station
based at Kfar Killa in southern Lebanon and called "Voice of the South".
This earlier radio, which broadcast in support of the Israel-backed
South Lebanon Army (SLA), closed down in May 2000 when Israeli forces
withdrew from southern Lebanon.
The new station on 756 kHz broadcasts talks, mostly about Lebanon,
criticizing the Lebanese government and Syrian influence in Lebanon. It
also attacks Palestinian militant organizations and the history of the
Palestinian military presence in Lebanon. It calls on the Palestinians
to opt for negotiations with Israel. The talks are interspersed with
popular Lebanese songs.
Reporting the appearance of the new radio, the web site of the Beirut-
based, pro-Hezbollah station Al-Manar TV on 23 December cited a
"Lebanese security source" as saying that its announcers appeared to be
the same as those previously heard on Voice of the South.
The web site of the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported on 26 December
that the new radio "appears to be broadcasting from northern Israel".

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BGSU JOURNALISM PROFESSOR'S BOOK EXAMINES RADIO'S CLEAR CHANNEL DEBATE
BOWLING GREEN, O.--Controversy over the control of clear channel AM
radio during the first half of the 20th century and its importance to
the development of radio broadcasting is examined in a new book by a
Bowling Green State University professor.
In "Big Voices of the Air: The Battle over Clear Channel Radio," Dr.
James Foust, an associate professor of journalism, explores the debate
over clear channel radio stations and the attempts by their owners to
maintain and enhance their dominant position in the broadcast band.
The 250-page book, which was published by Iowa State University Press,
concentrates on the formation and role of commercial communications
interest groups and examines their goals and strategies in relation to
today's larger, more structured entities from the perspective of the
policymakers.
"I originally became interested in the topic while working on my
doctorate at Ohio University," said Foust.
Foust's initial interest was piqued by an experiment, conducted by the
Federal Communications Commission during the 1930s, which allowed WLW,
an AM radio station in Cincinnati, to use 500,000 watts to carry its
signal. Exceeding the 50,000 watt limit-10 times today's normal limit-
WLW was the first and only radio station to broadcast regularly with
such power.
From the FCC's experiment he discovered that there was a political
battle being fought over the range and power of such clear channel radio
stations.
Clear channel AM radio stations were once the dominant electronic
media. Their powerful signals stretched hundreds-in some cases
thousands-of miles on exclusive frequencies, clear of interference from
other stations.
These powerful stations, established by the Federal Radio Commission,
created a debate with those opposing the clear channel stations who were
in favor of less powerful ones. The issue, which arose in 1928 and ended
in the mid-60s, was important to the future development of broadcasting
in the United States.
"The battle over clear channels in many ways foreshadowed media
political battles we have today," said Foust. "When you see cable
companies battling satellite providers or satellite providers battling
broadcast stations, you're seeing many of the same types of political
maneuvering and public interest arguments that were used in the clear
channel debate."
In addition to revealing the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that went
on during the debate regarding the role of clear channel radio stations,
the book details the stations' efforts to influence rural listeners,
farm organizations, Congress and the Federal Communications Commission.
The power of clear channel AM radio stations and the debate they
raised in the past is not of the same importance today, said Foust.
Radio stations are increasingly controlled by conglomerates, and the
emergence of television, cable and satellite have made other media
available to rural consumers.
"Today, there are no truly clear channels in the 1930s sense," said
Foust. "There aren't any stations with the kind of exclusive rights to a
frequency that the original clear channel stations had."
Foust believes the book will appeal to a wide audience, including
communications historians, political scientists as well as individuals
who are just interested in the history of radio.
"My intention was to write the book so that it would interest both the
casual and scholarly reader," said Foust.
In addition, Foust also recently co-authored a textbook titled, "Video
Production: Disciplines and Techniques." Published by McGraw-Hill Higher
Education, the 340-page book introduces students to the operations
underlying multiple-camera video production. Other co-authors of the
text are Thomas Burrows, Lynne Gross and Donald Wood.

This is for you engineering types and others interested in AM towers.
This web site has photos of an AM tower array that is literally rusting
away, and is still being used. It also supports a three bay FM station
antenna. Unfortunately, in some cases, as the pictures load, they cover
up some of the text. The photos are fascinating.

Did anyone else notice the SID (Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance)
yesterday at 1620 EST? I was doing some sunset DX'ing, and I was on a
roll with two new east coast stations logged - WCCC-1290 in CT and WFGL-
960 in MA. Then, suddenly the bottom dropped out - signals disappeared
like somebody had flipped a switch. A few of the most powerful
stations, like WWKB, were still there, but barely above the noise,
perhaps 40 or 50 dB weaker than they'd been moments ago. I poked around
to see what had broken in my antenna or receiver, but then I noticed
that groundwave signals were still at their normal levels. Hmmm... I
checked the Space Weather page at http://www.sel.noaa.gov/today.html,
and there was a huge spike, about four magnitudes above the normal
background level, on the right edge of the graph of X-ray flux vs time.
You can still see it, along with a smaller spike from an event about
three hours earlier.
Skywave signals slowly came back up over the next hour or so.
Curiously, TA signals seemed to be enhanced over the next while. By
1635, I was hearing UK talk radio on 1089... at its peak, it was
stronger than I've ever heard it before. There were loads of TA hets,
and several stations with fairly decent audio (e.g., on 882, 1098, and
1467).
Here's a description that I found in the book Propagation of
Radiowaves:
"The intense X-rays from solar flares produce strong enhancements of
electron density in the D layer, giving rise to 'sudden ionospheric
disturbances' (SID). The term SID embraces several phenomena, including
radio short-wave 'fadeouts', effects on LF/VLF propagation. and magnetic
perturbations, which occur only in the sunlit hemisphere and typically
last for half an hour. Soon afterwards MeV particles arrive, causing
enhanced radio absorption at high latitudes (polar cap absorption,
PCA)."
Later last night, the Kp index jumped up to 5, probably heralding the
arrival of those "MeV" particles.
This is what makes radio so fascinating... you just never know what to
expect next!

Forstmann Little to Acquire Citadel Stations for $2.0 Billion
NEW YORK, NY and LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- January 16, 2001 -- Forstmann
Little & Co. and Citadel Communications Corporation announced that they
have signed a definitive agreement whereby Forstmann Little will acquire
all of the outstanding shares of Citadel Communications Corporation for
$26 per share in cash, a 49% premium over the closing price on Friday,
January 12. The total value of the transaction is approximately $2.0
billion, including assumed and refinanced debt, and preferred stock.
Forstmann Little will invest $1.5 billion of its own capital and
affiliates of J. P. Morgan Chase & Co. have agreed to provide $500
million of bank financing. This conservative capital structure will
provide Citadel Communications with the resources to fund internal
growth as well as future acquisitions of additional stations.
Citadel Communications is the nation's sixth largest radio
broadcasting company when ranked by revenue. Upon completion of pending
transactions, Citadel will own or operate 209 stations in 44 mid-sized
markets throughout the U.S. The transaction, which is not subject to
financing, is anticipated to be completed in the second half of 2001,
following receipt of Federal Communications Commission and shareholder
approval.
Citadel Communications will continue to be run by its current
management team, headed by founder, Chairman, President and CEO Lawrence
R. Wilson. No changes in operations are expected.
The transaction was unanimously approved yesterday by the Board of
Directors of Citadel Communications Corporation. Credit Suisse First
Boston served as financial adviser to Citadel Communications Corporation
and provided a fairness opinion to Citadel's Board of Directors.
Citadel is focused primarily on acquiring, developing and operating
radio stations in mid-sized markets throughout the United States. Upon
completion of pending transactions, Citadel will own or operate 143 FM
and 66 AM stations concentrated in 44 mid-sized markets, including
clusters of four or more stations in 32 markets. Citadel has a national
presence, and its portfolio of stations is diversified geographically as
well as in terms of format and target demographics. The Company
completed its initial public offering in 1998 and currently has
approximately 37.0 million shares of common stock outstanding.

From today's edition of the Toronto Star. Note the next to last
paragraph. It's not even a sure bet that CHUM will be the Blue Jays
flagship in 2001.
All-sports station to sound end of the 1050 CHUM beat
We had little choice, says the general manager Chris Zelkovich SPORTS
MEDIA COLUMNIST
It was the day the music died.
The radio station that all but gave birth to rock 'n roll in Canada
more than 43 years ago announced that it will turn off the music this
spring to launch a national all-sports radio network.
The name 1050 CHUM will be replaced by The Team 1050 as Elvis Presley
gives way to the likes of Elvis Stojko.
``It was a big pill to swallow; it hurt a lot,'' CHUM Group Radio
president Jim Waters said of the change. ``CHUM holds a real historic
place in the music business in Canada.''
Pop culture commentator Bob Mackowycz says CHUM played a large role in
the lives of Baby Boomers.
``The most important element in CHUM's success was that these people
were bringing young people in Toronto culture they wouldn't have gotten
otherwise, when rock 'n' roll was still the scruffy bastard child and
before Jackie Kennedy danced the Twist,'' he said.
History aside, station general manager Brad Phillips said the station
had little choice.
``We hung on as long as we could because of the history of the
station, but we finally had to make a business decision,'' Phillips
said.
``What we're known for is creating great radio; we've done it with
music and now we're going to do it with sports.''
The announcement was not a painless one. Four employees were fired
yesterday because of the format change, including afternoon drive show
host Russ McLeod and news announcer Dan Turner.
The news was disappointing for CHUM 1050 fans.
Sports physiotherapist John Smith, 38, grew up listening to CHUM as a
kid in Hamilton and says it's going to be hard to find another station
to play at work.
``I like it because you get a good eclectic picture of what's going on
- there's the music and the news and the weather,'' he said.
When The Team 1050 and its eight-station Team Sports Radio Network
launch in ``the early spring,'' it will mark the end of an era in
Canadian radio.
When a daylight-hours-only station on Yonge St. changed its format to
24-hours-a-day Top 40 in May, 1957, it revolutionized the radio business
in Canada.
The first station in the country to play nothing but hits was an
instant success. At the end of the first week, CHUM's ratings doubled.
When pop music took off with the arrival of the Beatles and the rest
of the British invasion in the '60s, CHUM continued to grow.
It soon became the underpinnings of a broadcasting empire as CHUM's
owners bought up radio and television stations across the country.
But while the CHUM empire expanded rapidly, things started to go
downhill for the station that started it all.
In 1968, CHUM's FM station converted to album rock.
With its superior sound, FM radio cornered the music market by the
'80s and CHUM-AM was forced to find a new market.
That market turned out to be its old market as CHUM started playing
the old hits that made it famous in 1986.
In recent years, it fell even further. In 1997, desperate to attract
new listeners, CHUM became the official station of the Toronto Blue
Jays.
Its mix of oldies and baseball pulled in some new listeners, but not
enough to help it turn the corner.
With a 2.6 per cent share of the audience in the latest ratings, it
was one of Toronto's least listened-to stations.
That's what prompted the switch to sports.
``We weren't profitable and we had to think about where we could be
profitable,'' Waters said.
Being profitable in sports radio is not guaranteed.
``You're looking at a very small audience,'' said Doug Ackhurst,
general manager of The FAN 590, Toronto's existing sports station.
``(According to the most recent ratings) . . . 2.5 per cent of the
population of Toronto over the age of 12 listens to The FAN.
``That's a pretty small share. Cut that in half and it's very small.''
While The FAN needed six years to make a profit, the Team Sports Radio
Network says it isn't thinking locally.
Waters says with stations in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Halifax, Ottawa,
Peterborough, Kingston, Kitchener and Toronto he will have some real
clout in attracting advertisers.
Is there room for two all-sports stations in Toronto?
``I think there's room for two to begin with and let's just see where
we go from there,'' Waters said.
``I don't expect the FAN to crawl under a rock and hide, but I think
we'll give them a real good run for their money.''
Another competitor, CFRB's Gary Slaight, is welcoming the competition.
``Anything that gets people talking about AM radio and gets them
tuning into the AM dial is good for everybody on it,'' Slaight said.
When CBC went to FM, the AM tuning took a big drop. If CHUM brings a
few people back to AM, that's good for all of us.''
Oddly, the oldies station that got into sports with baseball may
become a sports station without baseball.
The Blue Jays radio contract is embroiled in a dispute between the
team and the Headline Sports Radio Network. There's no guarantee the
games will return to CHUM.
``All our planning has been done without the Jays because everything
is so up in the air,'' Waters said.

Here's a link to an article on WXYZ in Detroit going all sports. It
seems that although the ratings are low for these sports stations, they
still haul in bigger bucks from advertisers than the stations that have
the best ratings. So...... Is radio really driven by advertisers instead
of the desires of the radio audience?
BTW, I tried inserting the link for this article, and it was too long
for one line, so here's how to get to it: Go to

The following is from the Tampa Tribune. I should note, that the
Tampa Tribune, and WFLA TV are owned by the same company, Media General.
I find this interesting as this station is getting it's tenticles into
many broadcasting areas here in Tampa Bay Florida. In addition to this
new alliance in the story below, 3 other AM stations in the area, carry
the audio from their local newscasts, and another TV station PAX 66
licensed to Bradenton, has newcasts at 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM which are
produced by Channel 8. So if you look at local news in this area, WFLA
TV, carries local news each workday from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM to
Noon, 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM to 11:35 PM when the tonight show
starts. This is 7-1/2 hours per day of local news. Whew! They sure
get their moneys worth out of their facility. So during prime time when
they carry NBC network programming, they use another UHF station to
continue their news.

"AM radio station forms alliance with WFLA-TV
JO-ANN JOHNSTON of The Tampa Tribune, Published: Jan 24, 2001
WFLA, News Channel 8, has struck an agreement to sell advertising on
and share revenue with a local AM radio station. Monday, WTBN, 570 AM,
will start broadcasting a nationally syndicated, business-and- consumer-
news format, along with WFLA news, traffic and weather reports.
That will make WTBN, soon to be called Money 570, the only radio
station in the Tampa Bay area completely devoted to business news, said
Mark Jorgenson, the Tampa media entrepreneur who owns WTBN through his
Synchronous Media Group.
The radio station currently airs CNN Headline News and local high
school sports coverage, and makes its money selling time for
infomercials.
``I know it's going to be very successful,'' Jorgenson said Tuesday.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
WFLA is owned by Media General, which also owns The Tampa Tribune and
the online news service TBO.com. All are located in The News Center in
downtown Tampa on Parker Street.
Neither WFLA nor Media General could make an outright purchase of a
radio station because of government regulations limiting the number of
media outlets a company can own in any one market, said Rick Rogala,
WFLA's president and general manager.
So the two parties decided WFLA's sales force would start selling
radio time on WTBN- AM, which has no sales force of its own. The
partners will share revenue. Sometimes radio advertising time will be
sold in a package with TV, Internet or newspaper advertising. (WFLA
already partners with the Tribune and TBO.com to sell their advertising
in a package).
The parties would not disclose terms of the deal or sales projections.
WTBN keeps its license and controls programming in this deal. For most
of the day, the station will air programs from Colorado Springs-based
Business Talk Network, said Jorgenson.
The lineup will include talk and call-in shows on topics ranging from
starting a business to investing for retirement to handling consumer
issues, Jorgenson said.
The radio station has started leasing space in The News Center from
Media General, on the same floor as News Channel 8. The radio station
has five employees.
As time goes on, the radio station will share more of the content
provided by the TV station, The Tampa Tribune and TBO.com, the parties
said.
WFLA TV also provides sales support and programming for WXPX-TV,
Tampa's Pax network affiliate.

The Danish DX Listeners Club (Dansk DX Lytter Klub) has a new web site
up and running. It is found at www.ddxlk.net and is mainly in Danish,

Danish is easily understod (or ought to be ... hi) by Norwegians,

One thing (that I've spend a lot of time on) is preparing a list of
what can be heard on short wave in Denmark for each hour of the day -

may be of interest to people outside Denmark as well. You may go
