WGSR results:
Michael P Battaglino, Chatham NJ **: I'm very bummed that I missed "In
the Midnight Hour!" In fact, I could only barely make out a few songs
(and a quick TOH id at 0100) in the mess that is 1570 up this way. I
primarily was having to deal with WISP, Dowlestown, PA and their EWTN
programming the first hour, then WBUG, Amsterdam, NY showed up to
complicate things in the second hour with C&W music from FM 101.1. What
I did catch was in bits and pieces, for rather brief bursts. First time
using the Quantum QX and the Quantum Phaser along with my 150' backyard
fence wire, I think I'm gonna like this combination with the R8B.
Frederick R. Vobbe, Lima OH **: At one time I heard something that
sounded like oldies, but could not tell the title, artist, or did I hear
any ID.
David Hochfelder, Central NJ **: Some of the program actually made it
up here to central NJ, although it was a tough copy. The signal was
moderately strong, but suffered from lots of fading and heavy co-channel
interference from WISP, Doylestown, PA; WXLN, New Albany, IN; and a
third station identifying as "Real Country." There was also adjacent
channel interference from WQEW, right up the road in New York City.
Both WXLN and your WGSR are new loggings for me, so it was a good night,
all in all.
   In any event, here's what I heard.  I listened from midnight to 0120;
unfortunately, I'm not sufficiently familiar with '70s music to identify
many song titles and artists. That, combined with the persistent
interference to the signal, meant that I couldn't follow much of the
program. Sorry about that, because it sounded like Ron put a great deal
of thought and fun into the programming.
However, at 0010 ET I heard what sounded like a theme song from a TV
program (maybe SWAT?) and at 0018 "Band on the Run" by Wings. I heard
voice ID's, either canned or live, at 0034, 0046, 0107, 0111, and 0119;
for example, at 0034, I heard a live ID as "1570 WGSR." I also heard a
siren (at least two blasts) at 0052 and a Morse ID repeated at least
twice at 0058. The voice ID's, Morse ID, and siren all cut through the
interference nicely, but much of the programming didn't.
I'm located in New Brunswick, NJ, about 30 miles southeast of New
York City, and my receiver is a Sony ICF-2010 with a Kiwa Pocket Loop
antenna.
Steve Francis, Alcoa TN **: Heard here with 70's rock and code IDs.
Hard to follow with WXLN New Albany, Indiana on same bearing and atop
nearly all the time. I could tell Ron was taking an on-air call from a
guy in Finland who was picking up the test, but WGSR was totally under
WXLN by then, and I couldn't hear a word of the conversation.
Pat Martin, Seaside OR: I tried here on the Oregon coast, but cx up
here were poor. I have heard WGSR twice now, but I haven't caught any of
Ron's tests. Thanks for running the test. I am glad some others were
able to log the station.
Kevin Redding, Mesa AZ: I am more than happy with seeing testing and
am amazed that a guy in Finland could hear it. No way I could hear it
with 1580 KMIK 50 kW and 2.5 miles away and XERF.
Lars Bygdén, Sävar Sweden **: Yes, the WGSR-test did it all the way
across the Atlantic Ocean. I picked it up here in Sweden (Northern
Europe) at times between 0015 and 0230 ELT. Not so strong but clearly
readible at times. Thanks Ron for your efforts! I'll send a report.
Phil Greenspan, Marshfield MA **: Not heard here in Marshfield, MA.
Too much WNSH local and WISP. Thanks for the test.
Bruce Conti, Nashua NH **: WGSR FL Fernandina Beach - 2/3 0000-0200 -
Not heard. WBUG 101.1 Real Country was dominant, along with WISP EWTN
programs, all over likely WNST One-On-One Sports and unID Spanish
(XERF?) in tiresome WQEW Radio Disney splash.
Nigel Pimblett, Medicine Hat AB: Managed to hear the WGSR test here,
though it was tough with CKMW, XERF, and a station with ESPN. Heard
nothing for nearly an hour, then a couple of voice IDs and also morse
code IDs just prior to 0100 EST. New one for me, thanks Ron!
Robert Foxworth: I should check in now that I am back home after a
weekend trip...I heard the WGSR test in Tampa, between about 0003 and
0015 when I had to call it quits. Moderately strong on short fade-ups,
sometimes inaudible in the hash with plenty of background signals. Hrd
Ron's daughter give one ID at about 0015. I recognized one of the tracks
but didn't know the name of any of the ones I heard! The best fade-ins
were in the middle of the music of course but it sounded like a fun show
to listen to and I thank and salute you Ron. Rx was a RS DX-398
unassisted (no ext. ant.) Bob F
Stephen S. Howe, St Albans VT: WGSR-1570 generally very weak with
occasional fadeups to fair signal 2/3 0011-0043 with voice and MC IDs
and one identifiable song, with very slight slop from WQEW-1560 and
interference from two unidentified stations. CHLO, if there, was
unusually weak.
Pete Taylor, Tacoma WA *: WGSR-1570 = NOPE. Just get CKEG hockey and
SS ballads (KCVR) - but thanks Ron Gitschier for putting the test on.
Pat Martin, Seaside OR *: WGSR -1570 No sign here either. Just CKEG
and XERF off Eastern Beverage mix, little skip tonight..
Charles C Boehnke, Keaau HI *: NADA! Did not hear WGSR. I did hear
KCVR, XERF, and CKMW. I'll listen to my tape again tomorrow in case I
might have missed something.
John Tudenham, Joplin MO **: No WGSR, too much splash from local KQYX
on 1560.
Jim Chenard, Newton NJ **: Test made it into Northern New Jersey,
Andover Township Good periodic signal over the 1560 Disney pest, 0000-
0030 AM Drake R8, 75 foot sloper
Blake Lawrence **: Heard WGSR-1570 test "In The Midnight Hour" loud
and semi-clear here in Washington, DC. Unneeded, as heard before on
regular format, but thanks to Ron G.
Mike Brooker, Toronto ON **: No luck with the WGSR test, though there
are no longer any dominant pests on 1570 here since the demise of CKLM,
CFOR and CHLO. I did hear an assortment of mx (rap, urban contemporary,
oldies), but of course it faded out at the top of hour ID time.
Larry Hall, Sr. **: Ron, thanks for putting the test on, but I fear
that I must report that I my results are fruitless. Did pick up a couple
of "Paint-Burners". Both from Indiana and both from Injun-anna. I'll
have to check my tapes to see if I really have enough to QSL them. Got
their call letters (both around a couple hundred watts) but not really
enough of the program. I digress.

WILM-1450 results:
Mike Brooker, Toronto ON **: Heard one bit of code at 0059 EST,
otherwise nada. No voice IDs heard, and any music would have been lost
in the graveyard mush. I even get some CHKT-1430 slop.
Stephen S. Howe, St Albans VT: WILM-1450 very weak 2/4 0006-0018 with
sirens and MC IDs. No "unusual programming" heard. Unlike last year's
test, no sign of CHUC.
Steve Francis, Alcoa TN **: Heard with a few code periods; not as
strong as their 1998 test, but readable through the din. Always good to
hear this little state!
Frederick R. Vobbe, Lima OH **: Nothing heard here in Lima. Too much
local 1450 stuff from different angles that I could not null out.
Michael P Battaglino, Chatham NJ **: Unfortunately, nothing to report
here in northern NJ (20 mi. west of NYC) either. Far too much WCTC-New
Brunswick to copy anything, tried to null it, phase it--forget it. It's
pretty much on the same bearing from me as Wilmington, hence the
problem.
Lee Silvi, Mentor OH: I am pleased to report I heard the WILM DX-Test.
I have to admit had it not been for the sirens and Morse code though it
would have been much more difficult, if not impossible, to pick them out
of the pileup on 1450.

CKLG-730, Vancouver, BC has changed formats to all-news and ID's as:
"NW2, 730, powered by CKNW". Not // to CKNW-980.

*Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Yes, I heard the sad news when I went to 730 kHz this morning and heard
"NW-2, Powered by CKNW-98" News format. I did catch a "CJNW" ID in a
News story at 1445 EST 2/1. Too bad, really a great piece of Vancouver
Rock Radio is gone. I remember listening to "LG-73" back in the 60s.

CKST-1040. As they are due to be The FAN-1040 eff. April 1, I thought I
would drop in at lunch (1 block away) and ask what was happening in the
interim, and April 1. They had no printed info to hand out (previously
they did), and the fellow told me it's now mostly music til the change.
I remarked I had heard a health talkshow last night (7:30pm PST), and he
shrugged and said there would be a mix...

Effective this morning about 8:00 AM local . . .
1190 KJOI Dallas, TX came on with Fox Sports Net at 0800. Carries
PRN's Jim Rome from 1200-1500, so now all sports. I expect a call
change, as the slogan is: "Extra Sports, 1190". Ex: oldies.

Since 2/1 4:00 PM CST, 1160 kHz stopped relaying the rock music of
WXRT 93.1 FM and started relaying the religious programming of WYLL
106.7 FM. The Ids on top of the hour are "WYLL AM Chicago, WYLL FM Des
Plaines - Chicago".

**Mike Pietruk - pietruk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

WYLL is currently simulcasting on 1160 and 106.7 its original old
frequency. Plans are eventually to end the simulcast with 106.7 going
contemporary Christian music and 1160 hosting the Christian talk format.
The simulcast is only temporary as it's part of the transition of the
format from 106.7 to 1160. 106.7, as mentioned in a previous post, will
go contemporary Christian music. Both stations are now owned by Salem
Broadcasting.

Dutch Radio Paradise is running this announcement frequently :
"Door een ongepaste actie van de eigenaar van deze frequentie, R
Gooiland/OK FM, zijn we gedongen onze uitzendingen te staken. Ondanks
alle afspraken over het gebruik van deze frequentie door R Paradijs
heeft men toch gemeend ons uit de lucht te moeten drukken ... In overleg
met de Rijksdienst voor Radiocommunicatie RDR hebben we besloten op

beëindigen ... R Paradijs zal proberen zo spoedig mogelijk weer in de

I phoned KLLU yesterday and the GM returned my call today. KLLU is
boosting from 10 to 50KW within the next couple of days. They still will
be at 630 watts at night. The station was purchased by Pamplin, who also
owns KPAM-860, KZTU-660, KVAN-1550 and an FM in Spokane, Wa. The station
will stay C&W for at least a while. The GM did hint that Pamplin is
looking at a NW Talk network though.

The following is some information submitted by Marc Marino about
Chicago radio....
The beat went hits on Jan 12. also, Wnib is dropping classical on
Feb. 11, we think don't know what they'll do but Bonneville bought them
out.
Also, 103.1 Wxxy dropped eighties for Spanish dance format on Jan. 31.
Also, Wkkd Aurora IL. dropped oldies for something like an arrow
format. They call it the River.
And cd 94.7 is no longer classic rock. They went eighties and call
them the Zone Wzzn new call.
Also, WXRT am 1160 is now Wyll am. Salem is also taking over Wzer 540
in Jackson WI.
Finally, the guy that owns channel 50 here is going to take over 820
Wypa very soon, not sure when but we think any week now. Also, Wyll-fm
is going CCM music with a slogan The Fish, probably like the one in
Anaheim, 95.9, the old Kezy.

1557 2225 04 FEB Chinese-speaking station was heard here, and nothing
in the WRTH fits. Olle Alm has heard the tape. It's Family Radio
realyed by Taiwan (300 kW) beamed at Beijing, thus easy to catch
even in southern Sweden. The only MW from FE we could count on
down here, he adds. (A one and a half hour ride in a jet plane
from here, Trollhättan, heading north, and then you are at
       Olle's place, Härnösand.)
 999 0015 06 FEB COPE, Madrid. A radio humour&satire show called El
Tiratinas. It included jokes about other Spanish radio networks.
"Onda Cero en sintonia de Radio Euskadi", so be careful ! It
would be back next day. SIO 444 at best.
999 0058 06 FEB Rai, Radio Due, should not be here at this hour, I,m
told. Vy good ID as it surfed up during a few minutes. A tx that
       had not switched off automatically...?.
1323 2240 05 FEB BBC, WS, Cyprus. "Communication Digest". At my place
it was challenged by the low-powered UK stations on the
       frequency.
1062 2325 05 FEB Czech Rep. Country Radio, Prague. EMWG says just 1 kW
btw 18 and 05. Even if true, it's hard to believe. SIO 3-4,4,3-4.
1053 0010 06 FEB Radio Mariya, Sankt Petersburg knocks out TalkSPORT
       (UK) at times.

The Cope Madrid px I referred to on 999 kHz, at 0000 UTC. The proper
name is El Tirachinas, "shooting pebbles". My first suggestion would be
"shooting with big clay jars, or even bathtubs", a bit too absurd, even
for me.

There was an opening to Europe earlier this evening. Many hets were
audible, a few even produced audio. Even had heard a full ID on one
which resulted in a new country for me.

153 Music heard here at 01.37. Presumably Norway.
189 Faint music here at 01.39. Presumably Iceland
198 Faint speech here, possibly a male, at 01.40. Probably BBC Radio
       4 in the UK
252 Ireland, Clarkestown 02.54 02/08. Pop music heard here followed by
announcements by a male in EE. Then in to new pop record. Signal
faded down in to the noise floor and then faded up again just in
time for me to hear an Atlantic 252 ID. Fair at times, though
much beacon QRM. New country for me.
945 Someone here with an Elvis Presley record at 01.46. Poor signal,
barely audible over the noise floor. Several possibilities.
963 Female singing at 01.48. Unable to discern language Poor
1116 Female talking in unknown language at 01.56. Poor
1134 Faint music heard here at 01.57 Poor
1314 Pop music here at 01.30. Probably Norway

I also heard faint audio on 702, 945, 963, but unable to hear any
details. Hets were also heard on 162, 531, 567, 657, 675, 693, 747, 756,

Last night, before and after midnight EST, I was hearing a Disney
station under WWKB, with programming //WQEW-1560. The AM Log and Lee
Freshwater's online log list only KDYS in Lafayette LA, but Disney seems
to have removed their list of stations from their website. Anybody know
of a new Disney operation on 1520? I haven't heard KDYS before, so
either way it's something new to me...

**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

The only Radio Disney I can find listed on 1520 is indeed KDYS too.

**Barry McLarnon VE3JF - bm@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Still hearing the Disney on 1520, for the 5th consecutive night. I
previously speculated that it could be KDYS, but I'm wondering now
whether it might be WKBZ in Michigan. The latest DXN mentions that
they've been stunting and were about to undergo a format change.
There's no existing Disney station in that market, so it seems
plausible... and I've heard WKBZ at night before. Maybe somebody closer
can confirm this one.

**Sheldon Harvey - ve2shw@xxxxxxxxx

I just checked the Radio Disney website and they are confirming that
WKBZ in Muskegon Heights, Michigan is a Radio Disney station. Check the
following URL for confirmation:

I tuned in again this evening, during a long-winded talk show on WWKB,
and heard Disney programming, in the null, parallel to 1560 New York

2 days ago, on 1530 kHz, I have heard my first brazilian. It was at
about 5:20 PM Montreal Time. They did play a futboll game in poruguese.
They have several commercials after the game, the news at 6:00 PM and
then a brazilian pop/rock show with a jingle after each 2 or 3 song. The
signal was quite strong, but mixing sometimes with WSAI was noticed,
sometimes well over WSAI with LOCAL-LIKE signal, but sometimes it was
well under WSAI with the WSAI dominance on this channel with american
nostalgic music format.

Subject: [IRCA] KAVT Reception Reports

As some of you have noticed, I am the Reception Manager for KAVT-1680-
Fresno CA. Paul Shinn, CE asked me to do it, as he does not have the
time to answer the reports.
Paul is sending me up a box of stuff that is including one report. I
found out this morning that any reports sent directly to KAVT will have
a relay, as he is not down in Fresno often right now. Paul did not know
who the report in from he is sending on to me and I have not gotten the
box from him as yet.
If you want a quick reply to your reception reports, please send them
directly to me for QSLing. I can answer with a QSL letter. Please
enclose return postage. Thanks!

The aim of this mail is to find out how many times KQWB 1660 has been
catched in Europe.
My friend Ludek Kosek from Jablonec in the Czech Republic wrote me he
heard this North Dakotan station on DEC 24, 2000 at 0635-0657 UTC. He
sent me also a cassette. What I found there was a nostalgia music
program with a dual ID of 1480 WODX / 1660 WMIB. Ludek says he heard a
clear slogan "Star 16-60" (a slogan of KQWB). That is what I have not
found on the tape. So it seems he sent me a wrong cassette and the righ
one he retaped with Iceland 189 kHz - as he says now... But - Ludek sent
a report to KQWB and got a QSL letter signed by Briad Whaled.
I think I saw KQWB reported only once by a crew in Sheigra, marked the
British First. Does anybody know if this station has been reported in
Europe more often, especially on DEC 24, 2000 ?

Sports-talk station rolls into oldies-rock spot, 1190 AM will feature
the 'Jim Rome Show'
  02/01/2001
By Al Brumley / The Dallas Morning News
Good night, sweetheart. And hello, Fox.
KJOI-AM (1190) is flipping from rock 'n' roll oldies to Fox Sports
Radio on Thursday. The switch was scheduled to occur at 7 a.m.
"With that facility and that signal, we thought this was the best
programming opportunity," said Tom Schurr, executive vice president and
market manager for Clear Channel Communications in Dallas. "We've got
five FMs and no AMs, so this gives us room to expand our business here,
and that's what we want to do."
The station, which has been airing oldies rock since September 1998,
will now carry the popular Jim Rome Show (11 a.m.-2 p.m.), along with
Tony Bruno (7-11 a.m.), Kiley & Booms (2-5 p.m.), Chris Myers & Steve
Lyons (5-7 p.m.), Sarge (7-10 p.m.), Bob Golic and Rich Herrera (10
p.m.-3 a.m.) and Dan Sileo (3-7 a.m.).
The format change marks the start of a sports-talk boom in the Dallas-
Fort Worth radio market. ABC is planning to bring ESPN Radio to town on
the 103.3-FM frequency in mid-March, said Tyler Cox, station manager of
ABC-owned KMEO-FM (96.7) and part of the ABC group involved in the
coordination of the ESPN station.
Add that to current sports-talker "The Ticket" KTCK-AM (1310), and
soon sports fans will have a lot to choose from.
Mr. Schurr said he believes the market can support three sports-talk
stations.
"I think each one will find its audience," he said. "I think this [Fox
Sports] will be a much more focused sports-talk station, with more
information about what's going on in the sports world without going off
on tangents that don't have anything to do with sports."
KTCK program director Bruce Gilbert said sports talk is a hot format
right now, "and when a format's doing as well as this one is, you have
to expect some competition. But I'd rather be part of a format that's on
fire than one that's fading fast. I think it's great for the consumer,
because it gives them a lot of choices."
Both Mr. Schurr and Mr. Cox said they plan to hire local afternoon
hosts for their stations soon.
And Mr. Cox said the ESPN Radio station will also offer local sports
updates provided by staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Clear Channel is buying the 1190 signal from Radio One for about $16
million. Radio One bought the signal from Infinity Broadcasting last
spring with the intention of turning it into a gospel station.
The company got as far as dumping Don Imus' morning show and changing
the call letters to KJOI-AM. But when Radio One was able to buy "Magic"
KTXQ-FM (94.5) last fall, the company decided to sell KJOI. Oldies have
been playing commercial-free on the station since.
Clear Channel has applied for the call letters KTRA-AM and will use
the nickname "XTRA Sports" for the station.

From the 2/2/01 Sacramento Bee re KIID-1470:
Air Time: It's likely Imus needs new home
  By Dixie Reid
  Bee Staff Writer
  (Published Feb. 1, 2001)
Don Imus soon may be homeless in Sacramento. His nationally syndicated
talk show, "Imus in the Morning," airs locally on KRAK (1470 AM), a
station that has been sold to ABC Disney.
The programming on Radio Disney's new KIID (1470 AM) will target
youngsters 12 and younger and the moms 25 to 54 years old who are
driving them to soccer practice and ballet lessons. No launch date has
been set for the new programming.
It's certain there's no place for the acerbic Imus in such a kid-
friendly format. Word has it that his syndicator, Westwood One, is
shopping the show to other Sacramento stations. One that isn't
interested is his previous home, KHTK Sports (1140 AM).
Doug Harvill, general manager of both KRAK and KHTK, said he has no
spot for Imus, whom he moved to KRAK in October 1999 and replaced with
the Rise Guys.
"I wish we could do it," Harvill said. "It's a great show."
KIID will be the 49th Radio Disney station in the nation and the
seventh in California.
"We're in 17 of the top 20 markets," spokesman Marti Spisak said. "The
way we're going, we'll be in the other three very soon. It's only our
third year, and we're growing."
Radio Disney programming features about 70 percent Top 40 music (such
as Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys) and 30 percent of what
Spisak calls "wooly-bully, twist-and-shout, 'YMCA,' 'Big Chill' stuff."
"There was a need for this type of station, one that parents can put
their kids in front of and don't have to worry about the content,"
Spisak said. "They know it'll be safe and kid-friendly.
"I really pushed for a station in Sacramento. I lived there for 10
years, went to Sac State and was director of marketing for KFBK. I love
Sacramento. It's a great radio town and a great family town."

Just a note to let you know that KXEN-1010 Festus/St. Louis, MO has
dropped it's Spanish AC programming. The format has been switched to a
mix of Christian teaching and Contemporary Christian music, still with
AM Stereo at night. This is the first time Contemporary Christian music
has been featured on a station in the St. Louis market since the demise
of WCBW 104.9 (which has become Urban AC KMJM) in 1997.

Actually Disney's list is still on the web but the stations are listed
by city only. The web site is surprisingly difficult to navigate. I went
through it manually and made a list of all the Radio Disney outlets last
October. They had outlets in 45 cities at that time.
I just went through it again and did a comparison. Since October they
have dropped one outlet (Corpus Christi, TX 1360) and added three (Ft.
Myers, FL 1410 - Fresno, CA 1680 - Gainesville, FL 1390) for a total of
47 cities. All but one of these are AM, the exception being 100.1 FM in
Cumberland, MD.
Lafayette, LA is still the only outlet shown on 1520. So if there is a
new outlet on 1520 it hasn't made it to their web site yet.
I posted a list of the Radio Disney outlets sorted by frequency on my
web site today for everyones convenience. It can be found at
http://community.webtv.net/N0NNK/ Tab all the way to the bottom and
select RADIO DISNEY.

Today in the Media Newsdesk at
http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/html/medianews.html we've published a story
from Gulf News that Radio Asia has signed an agreement to run 24 hour
services on AM and FM from Ras Al Khaimah. No start date is given in the
story. The AM service will be mainly in Malayalam, with some other Asian
languages such as Tamil, Urdu, Hindi and Pushto. But most interesting
was the bit that said the power of the transmitter is now 200kW! That
would explain the numerous loggings of this station on 1152 in recent
months. Now with a 24 hour service looming, it looks set to become a
common DX catch :-)

WABC 770 AM are carrying New York-New Jersey Hitman, that should tell
you that with WABC's signal most of eastern coast can hear their
broadcasts of Saturday night games. I was able to pick up WABC clear as
a bell in St.Petersburg, FL this past Saturday night. I can't remember
who the play-by-play announcer and color announcer were but a lot of
spots were some of the companies that buy time for the other teams WABC
carries.

WMVP is carrying the Chicago Enforcers. When a conflict arises with
WMVP, AM 1000, carries the Chicago Enforcers. When a conflict arises,
as did with the 2nd half of last Saturday nights' game, the back-up
becomes WAUR, AM930 licensed to Sandwich, IL some 60 miles west of
Chicago. The Enforcers were carried in their entirety last Saturday
evening by WMVP's real audio feed.

Because of lack on clarity on the situation of the RTBF medium wave
stations, I called the responsable technician for the transmitters and
received this information (all times in UTC):
  * Radio La Première (first channel - news and information):
broadcasting on 621 kHz as follows:

0345: sign-on with carrier only
0359: start of programmes
2300 (approximately): end of programmes
2310: automatic measures (check of transmitter via specific signals)
2315/0020: sign-off

  * Radio Trafic (non-stop music and traffic information):
now broadcasting on: 1125 kHz via Houdeng: although the transmitter is
20 kW, they only use 10 kW
1233 kHz via Liège (tx is in city centre): power used is 5 kW
1305 kHz via Marche: power used 10 kW

About the transmitter in Marche: it is the same as the one used a few
years ago on 1305 kHz and has been put back into service. Some people
thought this transmitter was located in Namur, but that is the target
area rather than the true location of the transmitter, which is Marche.
