CPC Chairperson (IRCA) - Lynn Hollerman - lynnhollerman@xxxxxxxxxxx
Thank you Lynn and Blaine for arranging tests for us this season!!
WGAI results:
**Mike Brooker, Toronto ON: The WGAI-560 test was heard, with code IDs
at 2358 EST. Frequency dominated by CFOS (almost a groundwave). Unusual
to run a test before midnight. I thought tests had to take place after
0000 local time. Or has yet another FCC regulation been trashed?
Eric Bueneman: The test from WGAI-560 Elizabeth City, NC was not heard;
only WIND and WHBQ were heard at this location.
**Steve Francis, Alcoa TN: WGAI-560 heard with code at both low and high
pitches.
**Barry McLarnon VE3JF: WGAI-560: No problem hearing this one - the
code was audible almost immediately after I tuned in around 2333, and I
could hear it more or less continuously until midnight. It varied in
slow fading from barely discernable to "armchair copy". On a few
occasions I noticed a more abrupt change that I thought could have been a
power/pattern change. The text of the code message was TEST DE WGAI (X5)
ON 560 KHZ IN ELIZABETH CITY, NC TEST DE WGAI (X5). I also heard some
musical WGAI IDs. Just a few stations, such as CFOS and WFIL, competing,
plus a loud het from Spain on 558!
**Ronald Gitschier, Jacksonville FL: Feb-18-01, 0100-0200 eastern. Test
heard in Jacksonville, Florida (Mayport Naval Station). Consisted of
several minutes of morse code. Miami WQAM semi-dominant with ESPN
programming, code punched in through the much really well. Did not hear
jingles or Music CD that was on from 1:30AM eastern. GE Superadio III and
RS DX 398 both barefoot. Called station, CE/OM Bob Carter stated he was
using his night facility, 500 watts directional. Good catch, sold me all
the more on the use of Morse Code IDs for tests, it really stood head and
shoulders above the mud. At 2:31 AM WQAM 560 is dominant with ESPN
programming.
**David J. Twiggs: Just a quick note to let you know the saturday night
test was making it into Bristol, CT.,(20 miles west of Hartford.)
Saturday night I set the frequency to 560, turned the volume to a
moderate level and fell asleep... at 01:04 am Eastern Sunday morning I
woke briefly to hear the WGAI CW ID on top of the jumble... The other
dominate station was CFOS Owen Sound, ONT. Happily satisfied I rolled
over and went back to sleep. Radio here is Yaesu FRG-7 and the antenna is
a Terk Loop... a small 9" loop.
**Rick Kenneally, Wilton CT: WGAI-560 - heard code IDs, but deep under
CFOS-ON and others. Code "WGAI WGAI..." - didn't copy much more than
that. The test back in 3/98 was similar in signal strength, but
encountered less interference.
**Kent Plourde, Bristol CT: I heard the WGAI Friday night test also from
Bristol, CT. It was mostly in code with jingles interspersed. I heard
one slogan at 2336, "WGAI, proud of the past ... excited about the
future" and "WGAI Elizabeth City". I also heard WHYN Springfield MA
IDing at the top of the hour. I was using a CCRadio barefoot.
**David Hochfelder, New Brunswick NJ: WGAI test on Friday/Saturday;
caught it from midnight to 0030. No audio here, because of local WFIL
Philadelphia on the channel. I nulled it as much as possible, and got
limited copy of the frequent CW ID's, including the phrase "...BETH CITY,
NC TEST DE WGAI" with the call letters repeated several times. I assume
that "...BETH" was the tail end of "ELIZABETH." After WGAI cut power or
changed pattern at 0030, I caught a bottom of the hour ID from CFOS, Owen
Sound, ON, a new one for me. All in all, a great night on a channel on
which I thought I'd logged everything I could hear under WFIL.
**Michael P Battaglino, Chatham NJ: At my location I have a lot of local
static to deal with on the lower frequencies, but even still your code
broke through like a trooper. Problem is, I'm not a ham and do not read
Morse code--so I'm really glad fellow DXers like Barry-below- can, so I
know what it was that I heard! Anyway, beyond that nothing else was
audible. I could tell when you would break in with id's because the
tones would stop. Not enough for a report, I'm afraid. Very little WFIL
if at all, was trying real hard to phase it , but couldn't lock in on
your signal.
WFBS results:
**Barry McLarnon VE3JF: WFBS-1280: This was much tougher - 1280 was a
graveyard-like jumble, with only WHTK in Rochester NY standing out of the
crowd. However, I heard bits of the WFBS code ID at around 0020-0021,
and again at 0041-0043. The call letters were repeated many times with
two different tone frequencies - the higher of the two cut through the
QRM better. I also heard some oldies (e.g., "Honeycomb" by Jimmy
Rodgers, and a Buddy Holly tune), but I have no idea whether they came
from WFBS.
**Rick Kenneally, Wilton CT: WFBS-1280 - surprisingly, local WADO-NYC
almost non-existent here northeast of New York. Heard code IDs, both
high and low pitch. Heard odd calliope(?) music at 0528Z - don't know if
this was WFBS or not. Someone asked who had "Yesterday" by Beatles - this
was WFAU, Gardiner, ME. Also on channel were WHTK, Rochester; WADO, NYC;
and CFYZ, Toronto (only 99 watts?).
**David Hochfelder, New Brunswick NJ: Nothing on the 1280 Berwick, PA
test on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Jumble, including dominant WADO
New York.
**Bob Klinger, New Cumberland PA: I was trying for the WFBS test tonight.
Hearing WADO most of the time. I am getting something under though! At
12:05 AM I could hear I believe it's Herb Albert and his song called
"Honey" or Taste of Honey" I am not sure of title. I also heard a man
say..."thanks for Lee.......??????. I live maybe 30 to 50 miles give or
take from Berwick, PA. I also thought I heard the Beatles "Yesterday"!
Can anybody confirm these? *Mike Brooker, Toronto ON: I heard some code
at 0043 EST. I haven't played back the tape yet, but presume it's a code
ID. Thus far (0055EST) I haven't been able to pull any mx out from
under a nulled CFYZ and WADO.
**Blaine Thompson: Only thing on 1280 for me is Joy Browne (WOR Radio
Network)...No sign of WFBS.
Paul Staupe: I decided to try to null out WWTC, our local Ave Maria radio
affiliate on Friday night to get a chance to listen to WFBS, knowing full
well that it would be a miracle to get my Kiwa loop to null out their 5
KW signal about ten miles from my QTH, and wonder of wonders WWTC went
DARK around midnight CST!!!!!!!! Turns out the station was sold to WCTS
a local evangelical station, (no editorial comment...I bite my tongue)
and the signal on 1280 was back on the air Monday morning, simulcast with
WCTS down the dial at 1030. Don't know what their plans are for this,
but for some reason this Twin Cities station on 1280 kHz has changed
hands more in the last ten years than any other! (WWTC, original Radio
AAHZ, Catholic Family Radio, Ave Maria Radio, and now WCTS #2) Don't know
why, it's strong over the Twin Cites MSA both day and night. As far as
reception reports for WFBS, I think I may have heard them through the
slop, but I couldn't be sure. Lots of other stations on 1280, but quite
thrilling to be able to try!!!

The "Scattering of Ashes" planned for the late Alan Roycroft's
farewell ceremoney has been changed from Feb 24 to March 3, 2001.
Instead of scattering the ashes from the cliff they will be taken out by
paddle boat and scattered over the sea which will be visible from the
area in front of Alan's house on Kahoa Street in Hilo. The exact time is
unknown, it will be announced later.

5562.0 kHz 15 feb 2100 Unid, and the id keeps evading my braincells,
or what's left of them. The noise level is just a little to high. It's
in Vernacular with one or two French-sounding words now and then. I have
a few speculations regarding the country or countries. But the names of
most capitals or countries in former French or Belgian colonies in
Africa have been heard in their news, in conversations, in soccer game
reports, etc. So I take nothing for sure. Does anyone know in what
language they say "Marhaba" for Hi, hello, good-evening or any greeting
? Yesterday, in a phone px, after a soccer match, it was "Alló,
marhaba" from the studio, then the caller said "Marhaba" and went on
with his or her business. There were more than a dozen of such short
calls, so that word really sticks to my mind.

CKLG -> CJNW. This I noted under "Hot items" I too have a story about
LG73,my wife drives to work in a custom 72 Chev Shorty 4x4 with the
original stock AM radio in it and she had switched from oldies 650 to
LG73 and came home the other day saying her station disappeared. I said
WHAT! Oldies 650 is gone! and she said no some New station she was
listening too so I knew immediately that it was 730 she was talking
about from the last news letter I read here so I hunted around for
another station similar and the only one I could find was 850 out of
Abbotsford, boy those rock format stations are disappearing on AM big
time.

KYET 1180 in Williams, Arizona is back on the air with a big signal
and playing C&W classics. This is probably the first time I have heard
them in 18 months. They were a daily before this.

Need to correct my earlier message about who bought WWTC 1280 in
Minneapolis. It's Christian Talk religous broadcaster KKMS (Common
Ground Broadcasting, a unit of Salem Communciations) operating on 980
kHz, about 14 mi SSE of WWTC. Currently, WWTC is simulcasting the 980
format, including the KKMS ID. KKMS also owns KYCR 1570 right next door
to WWTC's towers on 1280. I drive by them on my way to work, and believe
me, there's a lot of RF in that part of town!
Since WWTC is licensed to operate at night 5KW directional, and KYCR
is only operating at 230 watts non-directional at night, my guess would
be that the owners will dump KYCR and move the programming over to WWTC.
However, the official word is there's no plans to change formats. Their
url is www.kkms.com
The KKMS nightime pattern is remarkably similar to WWTC's. Since
KYCR's format is also religious talk, but separate from KKMS, I'll bet
they bought the station to get better nighttime coverage of their second
talk format.
Salem Communications now owns three AM stations in the Twin Cities, so
it's joining the ranks of Disney (two AM and three FM), and Minnesota
Public Radio (two FM and two AM stations)

I've started publishing a new weekly DX bulletin, called Signal. You
may read it at: http://listen.to/dxsignal
Planned contents: radio catches, schedules, QSL news, radio-related
Internet topics (stations, clubs, e-mail reporting).
Signal exists in two versions: Russian and English. Russian version is
larger in volume, because I add translated items from some international
DX publications and mail lists there. I think it's no sense to include
such items into the English version.
English version contains only original loggings, sent to me by DXers.
The first issue uses only my info, because my conviction is: first to
make a bulletin, then to announce it to the public. Hope you join me in
Signal soon. Send you info, comments and suggestions to:
dxsignal@xxxxxxxxx
You may freely reproduce items from Signal, mentioning it as info
source.

There are a couple of new crossbanders here which have had people
stumped, IDing simply as "AM 16-11" but with an echo suggesting 2
stations.
Anyhow, this afternoon I noted it was in parallel to 2UE 954 with a
football program, which then kindly ID'd all the stations relaying it
including AM 1611 Newcastle and AM 1611 Tamworth.
Still no info on who is running this station or an address yet.

Back on 2/4 I found KAVT-1680 running 19.6 Hz high at 1903 EST. By
1932 they had moved down to +18.4 Hz. The morning of 2/5 at 0330 they
were within a Hertz or two of their nominal frequency. In the afternoon,
back up on 1680.0173 kHz at 1919. The following several days, KAVT was
within +/- 3 Hz of 1680, so I thought they had fixed their problem.
Then yesterday afternoon 2/16 at 1845, I measured KAVT at 1680.0212 kHz.
Today 2/17 they were only 0.4 Hz high at 0305 and 3 Hz low at 1405.
Maybe they have two transmitters, or two exciters.

Some of you have probably wondered what I've been doing lately. My
mother passed away early in January. Following that period of sadness
for me and the whole family, my brother and I have been involved in the
sale of the house in W. Yarmouth, MA where my parents had lived in
retirement since 1974. Yesterday (Friday, 16 FEB), the house sale went
through and an era of my travelling to Cape Cod on a frequent basis came
to an end.
During the past 27 years of these trips, DXing has often been a
component - from my folks' house, from my brother-in-law's place in E.
Harwich, and - most frequently of all - from the car at various beach
sites yielding maximum foreign station signal levels. Back in the '70s,
I DX'ed with Marc DeLorenzo when he lived around the corner in W.
Yarmouth and from Skip Wolsieffer's (WA1CML) QTH in Osterville. More
recently I'd drop in on Vern Brownell (W1VB) in Chatham and on Steve
Clang in Plymouth.
I remember the early days when my parents permitted me to leave a
hulking R-390A in their basement and wires in their pine trees. The
logs of goodies like Paraguay-645, China-1525, and Greenland-1425. Times
that my wife and I stayed there for a week in the summer to enjoy the
beach, fried clam dinners, and the room my mother dubbed "the honeymoon
suite".
The house on Trowbridge Path had a lot of good memories associated
with it, but since my mother had gone to a nursing home in April 2000,
it became ghostly quiet except for when my brother and I would stop by
to maintain things and gradually empty it out.
How fitting it was, DX wise, that my trip out to a favorite beach site
in South Orleans, MA on Friday afternoon (following the closing on the
house) brought conditions that I could only describe as "legendary".
Virtually every TA channel had a good, often a huge, signal on it. Even
some of the 10 kHz channel Europeans rolled over the co-channel
domestics, for instance, SER Spain on 1080 was DEMOLISHING WTIC. Best
TA DX this side of Newfoundland by my reckoning... it's going to take me
a week to type the logs ! Peak reception time was between 4 and 6 p.m.
EST (2100-2300 UTC) though some early blasters like 549, 981, 1251, and
1521 showed up on the car radio as early as 3 p.m. before I got things
set up over at the beach / town landing near Tar Kiln Road and Route 28.
By 6 p.m. it was raining heavily, so I went over to the brother-in-law's
house in E. Harwich (where I'd put up a temporary sloper off the top of
a 70' pitch pine tree earlier that day).
DX continued to roll in through the evening. I slept awhile and then
got up about 2 a.m. (0700 UTC Saturday, 17 FEB) to see if I could bag
the Faroes sign-on on 531 kHz at 0715. Spain had that channel solidly in
control, indeed they were as strong as adjacent Turks & Caicos on 530 !
So Faroes went unheard this time but the other TA's were still booming
in.
Longwave and low band medium wave hung in there incredibly late those
early hours of Saturday morning. I was getting Atlantic-252 at 5.05
a.m. EST (1005 UTC) and a remnant of Ireland-567 was noted at the same
time. This beats (by 5 minutes) my previous late TA reception time of
1000 UTC when I'd logged UK on 1214 (now 1215) from Menotomy Rocks Park
in Arlington, MA back in December of 1966.
For another fitting conclusion of my "Cape Cod DX era", I tested out
several loops during stable daytime conditions. These included the old
and new Gerry Thomas Quantums, a Kiwa loop, and a homebrew broadband
design. The results of these tests will be published within the next
month in an article likely to be titled "Loop Shoot-Out at East
Harwich".
On Friday, even though I couldn't make it to the local Boston Area
DXers' meeting because my presence was required on Cape Cod, DX was
still on my agenda that evening. I should be able to attend the 16 MAR
BADX meeting with all the noise-reducing transformers I've been
promising.
Though an era has ended, I still expect to take the 2-hour drive to
the Cape a few times each year for recreation. I can stay over in East
Harwich sometimes and maybe I can drop in on guys like Vern Brownell in
Chatham and on other DXers a bit off Cape in nearby Plymouth and
Marshfield. And who knows where I might wind up retiring 14 or so years
from now. It's going to be near the ocean wherever it is, be it
Massachusetts, North Carolina, Florida, or wherever. (Virgin Islands or
Hawaii if the lottery tickets come through !)
In the mean time, closer to home, I can go out to coastal sites in
Rockport or Rowley for "juiced up" DX on after-work outings once the
weather gets a little milder and sunset roughly coincides with (or comes
a bit after) my arrival time at the shore (typically 6 to 6.30 p.m.
local). Sometime in March I expect to do my first after-work mini-
DXpedition for year 2001.
At home, I can certainly hear some of the bigger guns (including
nearly needle-pegging signals from Norway-1314 and Saudi Arabia-1521 on
a frequent basis), but for the really excellent stuff, I have to drive
to the seashore. Luckily this can be done (during good weather) in less
than an hour from home in Billerica or from work in North Andover.
So as some people's DX season runs down in March, mine usually is just
getting off the ground then.

News via the Internet is that a change in the hemispherical polarity
of the sun has been observed, indicating that we have passed the peak of
sunspot cycle 23. Despite being at the peak of the solar cycle,
transatlantic DX was outstanding mid-February. Many of my February 17
transatlantic logs, including the tentative reception of Russia on 1548,
can be heard on the March edition of the DX Audio Service. According to
a report from Jerry Berg at the February meeting of Boston Area DXers
(BADX), there's a Radio Nacional Rep Arabe Saharaui Democratie from
Tindouf, Algeria now on 7357 kilohertz shortwave. This might be
parallel 1550 kilohertz. I've since logged 7357, but haven't been able
to get 1550 for a parallel check. [Conti-NH]

189 & 207 Iceland on longwave would be an easy catch for DX-ers in
North America, am I right? Here Feb 17 2230 good music on 189,
just splatter from 183 Europé # 1, on 207 sharing the frequency
with Deutschlandsfunk. At least QSA 4 on both frequencies.
Have a look at an Icelandic homepage e.g. www.ismennt.is and you'll
find letters which I think are unique for this language. Do try to
pronounce them, they won't hurt your tongue, just twist it. Iselandic
is in the nordic-germanic group of languages, but as Norwegian, Danish
and Swedish have changed considerably, going their own ways but still
quite understandable for each other, Icelandic is the archaic Viking
forefather, and all new words from other languages which we adopt in
Sweden in an instant, are carefully given their Icelandic form.
Television is Sjónvarp, where sjónmust be related to Swedish skönja, to
see, to glance, and varp is related to English warp, German zu werfen,
to throw. We have it in a few special words and meanings in Swedish, all
having to do with throw.
So are Icelander linguistically isolated ? Not a bit. If a person in
another Scandinavian country has to talk to one, not using English , he
or she will find that they are perfectly on terms, as Icelanders also
talk "Nordic" a hearty mix of Danish and Norwegian moslty. I can,t
myself make out Iselandic and it is the same thing with Faroese, which I
know you might be able to hear on 531 kHz. 73 de JB

I noted something else besides KGO on 810 last night about the same
time Pat Martin did (11:20PM local, 0220-0300 2/20 in DXese) but didn't
want to hang around 40 minutes for an ID so taped it. A cursory review
of the tape shows it to be a sports format, so presumably it was WHB.
It's not that I don't enjoy listening to KGO's Christine Craft (those
of you in broadcasting probably remember her and her impact on the
business) and all the spots for 40 minutes, but for purposes of
efficiency, I called the WHB traffic department to find out when the
spot breaks are. She was preoccupied and not anxious to share this
information so turned me over to the Assistant Program Director, who in
the course of our conversation (a) expressed surprise that I might have
heard WHB and (b) confessed that they have been having problems with
their remote control lately. He commented, "You know how it is when
something like the automatic power switching has to be done manually."
*Rick Lewis - ricklew@xxxxxxxxxxx
I got WHB for the first time here in Phoenix on Saturday night, thanks
to those problems. 7:25 PM Central Time, and unusually, there was no
trace of KGO. In fact, I thought I was on 800 with XEROK off for a
minute, and didn't realize that the powerhouse to the right of this weak
station was, in fact, WBAP, not KGO.

MIDWESTERNERS - If you're not in WHB's normal N/S nighttime lobes, and
you have been aware of their day power use at night recently, please
check 'em out tonight to see if a "miracle fix" of the remote control
unit has taken place. Now that they know that someone from afar has
noticed, it might provide some incentive to fix the problem.
And yes, I did get their call letters on the tape. Also, about 0235,
a Spanish speaking station with ballads drifted in briefly, knocking out
WHB.

TA hets/carriers. Weakly audible was Ireland on 567 with a man speaking

heard and a jingle at midnight (0600 UTC) Also bits of Spanish on 855

Anyway I've heard a station advertising "comedyworld.com& 1260am.com". I

have any ideas who this may be. At times the signal is decent but when
it's time to ID down it goes! Of course. I have also been hearing a

I think this one may be from Cleveland since I live in central

Unusual signal near 1140.
*Glenn Hauser - ghauser@xxxxxxxxxxx]
Glenn; Thank you for the inquiry you made on my behalf, regarding the
1140 kHz interference. I inquired of the FCC, and just heard back from
their Tom Hora. He`s received a report from the people at KHTK, in
Sacramento, including a recording of the signal. He says the sound is
characteristic of an idling RTTY transmitter, presumably malfunctioning.
He`s notified the enforcement office in this area about finding the
transmitter and seeing the problem corrected. That must be a whale of a
malfunction, that could make a RTTY transmitter send on 1140 kHz, AND
drift in its pulse-rate from about 50 beats per minute to over 250, AND
do so in such a way that it would not become obvious to an operator or
engineer for well over three weeks, and so have been corrected! I really
must confess entertaining some serious doubts.
As the signal continues to be heard in the day-time, I doubt it is
outside the country. If you run across any reports similar to mine,
where foreign jamming does not appear the likely explanation, I'd
appreciate learning of them. 73, (Michael (KC6YUW) Watson, Feb 16, DX

I just got off the phone with Tracy Teagarden, CE for all the Infinity
stations in Las Vegas. Besides KSFN-1140, those include KLUC, KMXB.
KMZQ, KXNT, and KXTE.
He says the signal on 1136-37 kHz isn't them but a pirate or other
unauthorized relay of their signal! He says he is able to hear it in the
nulls of their nighttime directional array and that it appears to be
somewhere west-southwest of the Las Vegas metro area.
While he was on the phone, I let him listen to the signal live via my
R8/Quantum Loop combo and also played the tape I made yesterday. We
agreed that this isn't your run-of-the-mill pirate; the signal is just
too strong. We must be talking kilowatts here and a good ground system
to propagate such a strong groundwave signal across the dry, rocky
desert between me and Las Vegas.
Now this is where it gets a little weird. I asked Tracy if---based on
the strength of this signal and the fact this pirate didn't appear too
worried about attacting attention---this "pirate" might actually be some
sort of military test or experiment from the facilities scattered
throughout the Mojave. He replied that "sometimes in the past they've
relayed some local stations over at S4." ("S4" is the top-secret Papoose
Lake facility located to the south of the famous Area 51.) However,
Tracy said that when they've complained about prior relays to the FCC,
they've been told "not to worry about it" if the relay was part of a
government project or experiment. He said the FCC didn't say that this
time and is treating this as a civilian "pirating" case.
Tracy further said the signal left the air around midnight PST last
night and also transmits FSK signals and triangle waves! To me, those
latter two items seem to indicate this must be some sort of government
test instead of a pirate----maybe the FCC hasn't been alerted by The
Secret Government??? There are all sorts of candidates for the location;
between me and Las Vegas are the Nevada Test Site, Fort Irwin, my semi-
local China Lake Naval Weapons Center, etc. All would agree with my loop
bearings. S4, Area 51, etc., are too far north if my bearings are
reliable.
A military test would also explain such oddities as Pat Griffith's
reception of CHRB on 1141 last night.
Tracy really sounded stressed over this. He said he's busy enough with
his normal job responsibilities without this headache.

I live in FL and I am an IRCA member, and I am on the egroups list.
Recently Eric Bueneman posted there the flat out assertion that the 820
noise was being directed at the Largo, FL station on 820. I asked three
times for his source of that information and he never replied. I listen
to 820 sometimes but not often, I'd prefer the Cuban flavors on 1300 or
the ranchera that sometimes is on 1550, to the salsa-merengue-bachata
format on 820. But as I pointed out on the IRCA list, and as David G
knows well, WMGG hardly even has a newscast, much less any kind of
spoken programming that the Cubans would take an interest in. Since it
is a local for me (I even hear them on 1640 before power change) I can't
do much abouit tracing any 'jamming' here. The Tampa area has a fair
sized population and we have 680, 760, 820, 1300 and 1550 fulltime SS on
the AM band, but unlike the Miami area, none of them seem to be
politicized, from what I hear the first three just crank out music all
the time, the other two most of the time. And with just hand held
portables, I haven't done much with the 1140 issue. Also Lee Freshwater
recently reported in as being back in Ocala, FWIW. Bob F

The mystery signal, including the off-frequency KSFN-1140 relay, is
gone here.
I listened to it until a little after 11:30 pm last night. It was not
there when I checked this morning and hasn't returned throughout the
day. All I hear on 1140 now is KQAB with KSFN underneath.
I spoke to Tracy Teagarden, CE for KSFN and the rest of the Infinity
stations in Las Vegas, a few minutes ago and he was surprised to learn
the station had vanished (he says they could only hear it at night in
the nulls of their pattern). Tracy sounded relieved to know the relay
has stopped! He said there was a loss of power to the Infinity
transmitters in Las Vegas shortly after midnight last night for about
five seconds before they returned to the air. Did this have anything to
do with the disappearance of the mystery signal? Your guess is as good
as mine!
Tracy gave me a bit of a personal DX test in our call. He switched to
night power/pattern while I patched the R8's audio into the phone, and
he was impressed to still hear his signal under KQAB because I am in his
night null. I told him that kind of reception is par for the course when
your receiver is a Drake!
Tracy said he has heard nothing from the FCC since they made their
complaint about the relay. He remarked that the FCC didn't seem too
concerned about the relay. We both agreed this was a good indication
that Uncle Sam's boys were behind it.
I tried to reached John Winston at the FCC's Enforcement Bureau in
Washington and Charles Craig, head of the Bureau's western office in
Pleasanton, CA, today by phone to ask about the signal but neither have
returned my calls. For some reason, I don't expect they ever will.
BTW, that wasn't me on Art Bell last night talking about the HAARP
signal. I've discovered that trying to get through to Art on the phone
is like trying to get through to the Pope on the phone!
It looks like our big mystery has bit the dust, at least in the west.
Anybody still hearing something in the east?

didn't see a list of affiliates. I'm guessing they don't make the
informationm public, although I suppose the list could be buried
somewhere deep within the bowels of the site.
*Eric Bueneman - n0uiheric@xxxxxxx
Here's a list of stations on any of the ABC networks in my area:
KTRS-550 St. Louis, MO (ABC Information Network-hourly news)
KFNS-590 Wood River, IL (ESPN Sports Radio for some shows)
KWMO-1350 Washington, MO (ABC Pure Gold)
WAOX-105.3 Mount Olive, IL (ABC Hot AC, same feed as KCJJ-1630)
WSDZ-1260 Belleville, IL (Radio Disney, ABC o&o)
73, Eric (N0UIH)
*Charles A Taylor - calltaylor@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Well, I really don't quite know what to make of this (ABC policy of
refusal to issue a list of affiliates). I would have never in a month of
Sundays have expected any such policy to exist. But it does.
I know of two ABC affiliates:
770 WABC New York City, NY
930 WDLX Washington, NC

Who on 1190 khz between 0500-0600 EST runs Sports Talk. I could not
catch an ID u/KEX, but there was a spot at 0525 EST for "Mr. Just Right"
Brake relyning. Any ideas?
**JohnCallarman - JohnCallarman@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Not sure of the specific shows, but KJOI-1190, Dallas, has become all
sports, running Fox Net. They apparently plan to become KTRA, and Dallas
Morning News radio listings now show them as XTRA. I haven't checked
channel here to see if they have "manipulated" their tight night
pattern, which makes them easily nullible in Krum, about 40 miles
westnorthwest of the transmitter site.
**Bill Hale - phantom2@xxxxxxxx
Maybe KJOI, soon to be KTRA (Extra Sports) in Dallas is running Fox
Sports. The ad may have been for "Just Brakes". (?)
**Dannis Elya - Jefferson City MO - vertdood@xxxxxxxxx
I heard them too! I couldn't get an ID. @0700 EST there was a moment
of silence when they were supposed to insert their ID, then they went
into "Sports Center" - no newscast. Then, as local sunrise arrived, 1190
turned into a jumbled up mess.
**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
I listened back to cassette tape of 1190 and I missed the beginning of
the spot last night for "Just Breaks". It was loud and clear with a
pause from Art Bell on KEX. There was also a promo for a Sports update
program nightly at 11 PM, and some other FOX Sports stuff. CX were sure
a lot different than they are tonight. Poor CX to the East so far, but I
was getting a het on 738 Tahiti as early as 7PM PST.

Stations belonging to this Colombian network (cadena Radial
Autentica), either on SW (5975,Villavicencio), or on MW, may be carrying
special and/or extended programming since the founder of the church
called Centro Misionero Bethesda (and the CRA radio network) Jorge
Enrique Gómez Montealegre, was abducted last Thursday, presumably by
militants belonging to the FARC guerilla, which is showing increasing
hostilty towards evangelical churches in the country.
When Venezuelan baseball resumes, you may wish to check
http://www.mipunto.com/beisbol/ for current network listings.
Theoretically at least, there are frequencies where two different ball
games could be going on at the same time. And on certain frequencies,
where several Venezuelans are listed, just one may be narrating a ball
game. To find out which one, click on "Circuito de radio y TV" for any
one of the eight teams listed.

I got this from Art Sutton who owned WMGA...he owns stations in N.Ga
and in SC now. I am trying to get him to join the National Radio Club...
"When I bought WMGA in 1986, it operated with 10KW day NDA, 10KW
critical hour DA, and 250 watts at night DA. We had a total of 4 towers.
There was one 330 ft self supporting tower..the original tower when the
station went on the air in 1939 and three 225 ft guyed in line towers.
The self supporter stood 225 ft off to the side of the middle guyed
tower. The NDA daytime ran off the self supporting tower and the 10KW DA
critical hours ran off the two end guyed towers and the self supporting.
The nighttime 250 watts was just the three guyed towers...or that is the
way it was supposed to be. Try detuning a huge self supporting tower.
The nighttime was tough to keep in not tomention a terrible signal at
night.
I filed for and was granted 900 watts day, NDA on 580 using the self
supporting tower and 250 watts with just two towers...one of the guyed
ones and the big self supporting tower. We top loaded the self
supporting tower by putting three guyed wires on the top and then put
the first Johnny Ball insulator about 50 ft down the guyed wire.
Since I had problems with the DA on 1130 at night, been running on
STAs for a couple of years, the FCC granted me a STA to immediately move
to 580. When I sold the station, I told my former business partner (A
baptist minister...never go in business with a Baptist minister but that
is another story) he needed to renew the STA in 90 days and file for his
license on 580.
Guess what? They never did. The STA expired and then the CP to move
to 580 expired. Meanwhile, they are operating on 580 until finally, some
5 to 7 years later, the FCC finally forced them back to 1130.
The coverage on 580 was just as good during the day with 900 watts as
the 10,000 watts on 1130...with much less power...we had 500 watts NDA
presunrise instead of the 250 watts DA on 1130 and the 250 watts at
night on 580 was tremendously better than the 250 watts at night on
1130. By the time we sold the fairly new 10KW Continental transmitter
and spare parts, we paid for the move to 580.
It was a shame to see something so valuable and something we worked so
hard to get be forfeited as it was.

Radio Disney has now added 990 in Orlando FL and 1520 in Muskegon MI
to their web site.
In a strange twist they also added 540 in Pittsburgh WV. Robert
Klinger recently reported that 540 in Pittsburgh PA is now Disney so I
presume this to be an error by the Disney webmaster. There is a very
small town named Pittsburgh a little NE of Charleston WV but as far as I
can determine they do not have an allocation for 540.
Disney now claims a presence in 51 cities.

Pete Taylor mentioned Art Bell talking about an unidentified signal
"in Alaska somewhere"... someone sent me this earlier today about the
HAARP propagation "study" project... for what it's worth. (I edited a
bunch of junk about the Russians and Chinese out of this...) Randy
Stewart/Springfield MO
HAARP TRANSMITTER NOW RUNNING AT FULL POWER
As of this morning, Saturday Feb 17, 2001, HAARP began doing testing
with greatly increased FULL power. The transmitter can now be heard all
day long on 3.39 MHz. Very early this morning about 3 AM, HAARP could be
heard at it's "old" normal signal strength. About 4 AM the signal
changed in both its pulse timing and inter-pulse spacing. At 4:30 AM the
signal strength suddenly increased tremendously.
Unlike previous mornings, there was no regular F-layer daytime fade
out when the sun rose here in California about 6:45 AM. I continued to
monitor during the daylight. I have never heard the HAARP signal during
the daytime before. The sun now rises in Gakona Alaska about 10 AM PST.
The received signal again increased from about S5 to S9 at 10:05 AM.
With sunlight at both the transmitter and receiver there is no F-layer
skip to bend the powerful signal around the planet. This means this is
an extremely powerful direct groundwave signal. And I'm only receiving
the leakage off the side lobes of the antenna array.
The full HAARP design power is supposed to be about 350 Megawatts. But
that is only the published spec, not necessarily what is done in
practice (as in those CB'rs running illegal 1KWatt linear amplifiers).
There is a planned Air Force "Star Wars" test with two vehicles, one
from California and the other in the south Pacific, similar to last
summer's failed test. The tentative published launch is set for late
March or April. I will monitor HAARP to confirm it is running full power
during the launch, as it was last summer.
Last summer's "failure" is exactly what a HAARP device is supposed to
do; destroy the electronic controls of a vehicle so the second stage
cannot separate from the booster. A very cheap, simple way to knock down
missiles launched from anywhere on the planet. It also can destroy
military satellites in low orbit. Maybe that's why the Russians and
Chinese have been complaining in the last several weeks about Bush's
intention to "build" the star wars system. Maybe they've been losing
some of their "secret hardware." But of course, they won't say that in
public.
Its now 11 AM PST, on Saturday the 17th, and the signal is blasting in
with the powerful pre-pulse tone around S+20 and the main signal about
S9. The signal varies 3 to 6 db over a series of several pulses. Since
this is not due to F-layer skip fading, I must assume they are slewing
the beam of the antenna in various directions, and thus changing the
amount of the side lobes in this direction. This must be a test of a
simulated space warfare game with multiple targets. Rapid slewing of the
antenna in just a matter of a minute or two is not useful for submarine
communication, nor for their stated purpose of doing "ionospheric
research."
To show the HAARP signal is abnormally large, at this time, the 80
meter band is silent and WWV at 5 MHz cannot be heard, as would be
expected during the daytime. WWV at 10 MHz is barely heard but does not
even register on the S meter. Tuning back to 3.39 MHz, the S meter jumps
off the top of the scale. Even the extremely powerful Russian
"woodpecker" transmitters during the cold-war never did that, and they
were aimed along the ground not out into space. I have no way to
estimate how many Gigawatts that represents.

This isn't necessarily DX-related, but I find these sites to be
extremely interesting and informative, and thought other members might
like to check them out as well. Jeff Miller operates several sites that
deal with broadcasting history: http://members.aol.com/jeff560/jeff.html
www.geocities.com/jeff560khz and http://members.nbci.com/jeff560/ --
these both have MP3/RealAudio and .wav files of everything from the NBC
chimes to Arthur Godfrey describing FDR's casket being drawn by
horses... lots of fun goodies like the old (pre-1968) ABC radio news
sounder, the old (pre-1967) CBS news sounder etc.etc.
Speaking of the NBC chimes, there's a page devoted to the history of
the chimes: www.flash.net/~billhar/chimes.htm
If you remember NBC's weekend "Monitor" program, check out
www.monitorbeacon.com.
Of course, there's also Barry Mishkind's Broadcast Archive pages
(www.oldradio.com)...
A neat site on San Francisco radio history:
www.adams.net/~jfs/index.htm More general radio history at: www.old-
time.com Broadcast history links: www.midcoast.com/~lizmcl/links.html
Hope you all have fun with these!
