KRLD/WTIC-1080, Dallas, TX/Hartford, CT - off the air Sunday, March 18,
2001 from 1:00-3:00 am EST:

There was a lot of activity by DXers surrounding this non-test! Many
people reported hearing the same things - all were in North America, and
can best be divided into being either in the East, Mideast/midwest, or
West:
In the East, once the WTIC carrier was gone, most reported hearing some
combination of WVCG in FL with rlg in SS, a Cuban (presumed to be a Radio
Progresso outlet), and then KRLD with Bruce Williams. Reporters of this
included Dave Twiggs in Bristol, CT, Mike Battaglino in Chatham, NJ,
Ginnie in Ithaca, NY, Phil Greenspan in Marshfield, MA, Joe (K1CR) in
Providence, RI, Rick Kenneally in Wilton, CT, Tom Dimeo in Harrisburg, PA
and Kent Plourde in Bristol, CT. Many reported that the signal faded
before they heard an ID, and that at about 0212 there appeared to be a
pattern change on KRLD, as they started mixing with the Cuban station
then. Also, Mike Brooker in Toronto, ON reports hearing the SS very
weakly, and the signal mixed with a CHUM-1050 spur, as well as KRLD.
Robert Rodriguez in Kingston, NY, identified the Cuban station as CMCH,
Radio Cadena Habana, and said he heard another Spanish station, possibly
Venezuela, but he never got a good ID on it. He mentioned that conditions
that night seemed to favor Latin America. Bob Foxworth in Tampa, FL also
mentions hearing the Venezuelan. Barry McLarnon in Ottawa, ON heard some
music in SS, some other music in an unidentified language, an audible
KRLD, and an ID from WNWI-IL. Dave Marthouse in Brookneal, VA mentions he
heard the SS stations after WTIC signed off, then he heard KRLD for a
while and then the frequency was a jumble of signals with slop from WBAL-
1090.
In the Mideast/midwest, Steve Francis in Alcoa, TN heard primarily WKJK
in Louisville, KY as usual, and then WVCG-Coral Gables, FL in their
fades, as well as some SS which he presumes came from a Cuban station. He
says KRLD was heard loudly at 0201. In Springfield, MO, Randy Stewart
says once WTIC signed off, he heard mainly SS romantic music and a female
voice which sounded like Radio Cadena Habana. He heard some slop form
WDIA-1070 and KAAY-1090 as well, but once WTIC came back on, he was able
to hear them(WTIC) and will be sending them a taped report. Patrick
Griffith in Westminster, CO reports that once KRLD signed off, he heard
unid EE talk very weakly, as well as some splatter from local SS KMXA-
1090, and an ID of a call beginning with "K". John Callarman in Krum, TX
reported that after WTIC was off, he heard a couple of Latin stations on
the frequency, as well as an English speaking talk show in the 831 area
code (Santa Cruz, CA area).
In the West, Kevin Redding in Mesa, AZ and John Sampson (20 mi NW of
Phoenix) report hearing KSCO in Santa Cruz, CA dominate the frequency.
John also mentions there was an unid SS station under KSCO most of the
time. Pat Martin in Seaside, OR reports that before KRLD left the air,
1080 was a 50/50 mix of KOTK/KRLD - after that, he heard some unid local
weather, and then KOTK took over the frequency. He wasn't sure if the
unid was WTIC or not. Nigel Pimblett in Medicine Hat, AB says he also
heard KRLD and KOTK dominating the channel before KRLD went off. Then
KOTK dominated for a time alone, but would fade now and then, allowing
him to hear country music from CKSA and an SS station with music. He says
he heard a WTIC ID at 0129 and then WTIC was in the clear for a brief
period.

WMIB-1660 TEST: (all from NRC reflector - used by permission):
**Mike Brooker - Toronto ON: WMIB-1660 DX test was buried under the 800-
pound gorillas WWRU and WQSN, until 0235 EST, when I heard "WMIB AM 1660
testing", then into oldies.
**Patrick Griffith - Westminster CO: I made several attempts over the
course of the test with no joy. Just the usual mix of TX and UT on 1660
and splash from KBJD/1650 which is about 2 miles from me. Drake R-8 and
KIWA loop
**Sheldon Harvey - Greenfield Park PQ: WMIB test was heard here in the
Montreal region with, at times, very good signals! Mostly mixing with
Radio Unica, but at times was the dominant signal heard.
At 0605 UTC heard Come See About Me by the Supremes, then full test
info with several WMIB IDs by male DJ, with phone number, e-mail address
<wmib@xxxxxxxxx, I think), mailing address. Then into a song which the DJ
called a "DJ favorite" The Cool Ghoul. Receiver: Kenwood R-5000.
Antennas: various random wires
**Ron Gitschier - : Heard the WMIB Test on 1660. Signal tonight is shaky
at best. Good peaks, but the station ducked into the noise after about 15
or 20 minutes after midnight. It sounds like Phil Beckman is having a lot
of fun with the test. Did give a short test tone, but ducked back into
the music/DJing. Time to catch an hour's sleep before I have to watch
over the electrical plant tonight.
**Frederick R. Vobbe - Lima OH: Test heard with numerous IDs, etc.
**kevin redding - Mesa AZ: Couldn't pull them through KRZI and KXOL but
have heard them prior to this test.
**David J. Twiggs - Bristol CT: WMIB was in pretty good last night... I
started checking 1660 around 1030 pm EST and had 4 stations there.
Dominant was WWRL Radio Unica in central NJ with big signal.
2nd was WMIB with nostalgia music and ID's (This was before the test
and I assume they were on night power/pattern at the time.)
3rd was a Spanish station with short announcements between back to back
salsa type music... I didn't log it as anything but I'm guessing it might
have been the new Puerto Rico station.
4th was English talk station, presumed WQSN Kalamazoo MI. I never heard
an ID and they only peaked up when they were in a commercial... have
previously logged them before and the basic sound fit.
At midnight the switch to the test appeared to help WMIB's signal by
about 25%. With WWRL nulled WMIB was on top about 70% of the time and
easy to pick out details... I called the station on their announced
studio number and let him know he was making it to CT, which he said was
"pretty cool"; The announcer was playing alot of golden oldies, do-wop
type music and 60's hits. He played some test tone at various points and
explained the test and how the FCC actually encourages stations to
conduct them :) Also asked for reception reports and enclose 10 or 20
buck to ensure a quick reply :)!! (Just kidding but he does ask for a
stamp to pay for the cost of postage.)
**Michael P Battaglino - Chatham NJ: WMIB test heard loud at times in
northern NJ last night. Phased local pest WWRU, but had to deal with
occasional mixing from WQSN--but not much! Armchair copy at times.
Monitored from midnight through approx. 12:40 or so, then it was time to
turn in. Phil sure sounded like he was having a good time. Plenty of
id's, peppy oldies and time checks. Even threw in a quick tone early on.
Drake R8B, Quantum QX loop , 200' backyard fence wire and Quantum phaser.
**David Hochfelder: Heard on a Sony ICF-2010 with Kiwa Pocket Loop from
New Brunswick, NJ.
  I listened between 0011 and 0101 ET, March 25. Because I have a strong
local on 1660 (WWRU, Jersey City, NJ), I had some difficulty hearing the
signal. Also, for the first time this season, atmospheric noise was
bothersome.
Voice seemed to come through better than music, which was heavy on
Motown and 60's and '70s oldies. Here's what I heard: I was able to
identify two songs, "Dancing in the Streets" at 0011, and "After
Midnight" at 0101. Phil gave frequent ID's and time announcements. At
0020 I copied him saying something about a "heavy metal song" and he gave
out the station address, saying "send us [?] and get a response." At
0031 he said something about the station "engineer named Bob [?]" and "a
little reverberation and compression." At 0049: "Bizarro out of the
zone." At 0055: he gave out your name and station ID and mentioned
something about Monday and Friday. At 0058 he talked about "Annie Get
Your Gun" from 1962, although I'm not sure if he played it. Also at
0058, he sounded off the 1kHz tone.
**Ron Gitschier: Offshore in the Atlantic, I caught WMIB before the test
(just after my local sunset) and again before flipping up to 10kw. Faded
out right at the opener at midnight eastern, came back with Little
Richard's "Going to rock her/going to rip at her 'some fun tonight'. Not
sure of that record's actual title. Then in the DJ patter (recognized
Phil Beckman's voice) he gave ID "This is a Test Program... we're testing
things out on our daytime power of 10 thousand watts... WMIB Marco
Island, Florida. A break or two later he went on to say "I promised the
guys/folks in the "Radio Club" that I'd use some test tones...", brought
up what seemed to be a 1khz tone for maybe 6 seconds or so and with more
DJ patter said enough of that ond introduced the next oldie. The signal
quality was good during the first 15 minutes or so and was spotty
thereafter. In part due to the fact that rough seas made it unsafe for me
to listen outdoors - flying sea spray, etc. I listened with my Sony
radiocasette tie-strapped to a window on the flight deck of the ship,
barely able to keep standing straight and check the signal with my
unsecured RadioShack DX-398. (without slamming it into a bulkhead or
dropping it on the steel deck...)
After the first 20 minutes, I ducked into a safer part of the ship and
got an hour's sleep before I had to stand overnight watch over the
electrical and propulsion plant, keeping the Sony strapped inside the
window recording a side of a 120 min cassette. I flipped the tape over
for the last hour (of four) and darted back to my power plant consoles.
It was nice to hear Phil Beckman back at the helm of WMIB and holding
his terrific DJ overnight DX Party! I have to admit, that this former
Jacksonville Engineer/DJ (WAPE 690) inspired me to hold DX tests back at
my ol' stomping grounds of WGSR 1570. I've entertained about 50 requests
for QSLs, mostly based on the tests I've hosted, and at the same time
boosted the station's QSL rate from 0% to 100% for our brethren around
the nation and world. But this isn't about WGSR...
**Paul Smith, W4KNX - Sarasota FL: Believe it or not, the WMIB test came
in ok, but not what I would expect from 10 KW only 100 miles away. I
actually get a better ground wave signal during the day than what I got
during the test. Phil was sure having a good time playing disc jockey on
the music he likes. You never here those old oldies anymore. Last
format that I knew that played them was the KOOL gold format out of KOOL
AM in Phoenix. We all know how long KOOL AM has been gone.

3/21 at 1900 PST I heard the following TOH ID on 1270: 'KPLY-K-Play-
1230-Sparks-Reno.....KBZZ-Sparks-Reno'... This was during the Tom Leykis
show which used to end at 1900 but now runs until at least 2100
PST...From 1815-1900 the ID's during breaks were only the K-Play-1230 as
noted above, no mention of KBZZ. Hard to say what 1270's format is, all
I ever hear is Leykis, aaargh!

*Richard Toebe - richtoebe@xxxxxxx

1270 in Sparks NV is running a continuous loop, "K-Play has moved to
1230 AM...", had the top of hour ID "KBZZ Sparks-Reno" cut in right over
the loop. Signal fadey, over/under KTFI.

From the Radio & Records website (www.rronline.com):
One on One Sports sets name change date
The company will become The Sporting News Radio Network on March 26,
and two of One-On-One's three O&Os will get new call letters: WJWR/New
York will convert to WSNR as "Sporting News Radio 620," and WNRB/Boston
will switch to WWZN as "Sporting News Radio 1510, The Zone." The changes
comes as a result of One-On-One's late-November acquisition by Vulcan
Ventures, which owns The Sporting News print publication.

  KSMH-1620 is now giving West Sacramento as their city of license;
interesting, as today's "Air Time" column in the Sac Bee says they moved
the transmitter to midtown Sacramento, at 28th and C Streets. The
studios are in Sac as well, according to Dixie Reid. I'll have to drive
by there and check it out, hi--she's not the most accurate reporter.

Nearly certain WDLX is now 0600-0000ELT/1100-0500UTC. WDLX is about 10
miles from A Plant/Bear Grass here. Is usually just a bit above
cochannel Cue-Are-Mary (QRM to CBers in Palm Beach) on night array. Not
there at all at 0030 ELT check here at A Plant/Bear Grass.
Strongest AM signal here on 5 kW D facilities.
As an indicator of the terrible ground conductivity 0.5 mmho/m here in
this area: on my daily commute from far south Pitt Co. up here crossing
into Beaufort* Co. north, some portions of the AM BCB change radically.
*Beaufort pronounced bowfert, as is Beaufort (town) NC. Correct
pronunciation as per French, not Byewfert. Wait'll some SCers scorch you

This report, which I initiated, came back to me via AmFmTvDx reflector
and one of our Foreign Service officer at IBB (VOA) Transmitter Station

Alpha-Centauri).

Radio Property Ventures' KXEN-1010 Festus/St. Louis, MO is now
operating 24 hours a day without a silent period. Their format features
Christian teaching from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Contemporary

WIBI-91.1 Carlinville, IL (which covers the northeastern suburbs of St.
Louis) and KHCR-97.7 Potosi, MO (which covers the area's southern
suburbs). The station is 50 kW daytime in mono (using a 1961-vintage RCA
Ampliphase transmitter) from a six-tower array, 500 watts night in
glorious AM Stereo from a seperate three-tower array a quarter of a mile
from their daytime array. Their studios and transmitter site are located

A switch of oldies stations here in Central Florida: Unofficial "Rare
Sixties Radio 89.3" now gone, has been off at least two weeks, had a
very large playlist of mostly 1960-65 doo-wop & girl groop songs, signal
covered a ten mile radius from Winter Haven, occasionally played 60s era
WABC & WMCA singing IDs. I miss it! But I do have a new semi-local
oldies outlet WJCM-1050 Sebring, FL that runs a fairly large playlist,
for example Frankie Lymon's "Goody Goody" instead of Why Do Fools Fall
In Love. However, they sound like they're satellite syndicated, frequent
non-IDs "Crusin' Oldies." WJCM till a couple weeks ago was simulcasting
their sister FM's classic rock from 105.7.

Chris Hambly reports that RCI is being heard well in Australia on
15330 at 0530 in EE. Chris also notes that VL8A 4835 seems to be running
24hrs on 60 metres, rather than QSYing to 2310 at 0830z as scheduled.

1620 kHz GB Radio has reactivated here in Melbourne, Australia. It is
currently relaying 88.0 & 87.6 Hillside Radio.
Spoke to station manager Roger Thomas and he informs me that GB Radio
programming will return in 2-3 months. They intend to do half day of GB
Radio & the rest Hillside radio. Currently the station ID's as "Access
Radio.. Hillside Radio" with a heap of community announcements. Has a
mixture of oldies & modern pop. Station is currently only running 100w
but will be back to 400w within 3 - 4 weeks. Groundwave signal is quite
good at my QTH some 40km away.
The station is keen to get reception reports. Address is P.O. Box
2160, Bayswater, Victoria, 3153 PH: 9720 9696
Roger also mentioned that 1693 kHz had recently been bought here in
Melbourne by some other group. So expect transmissions soon.
Also noted 1503 3AK going back to programming after running a loop
tape saying they had gone to 1116 kHz. This seems a bit weird. The
station continues to ID as being on 1116 kHz.

(no WHAS) as well as what I believe was id'd as Radio Bahamas at 810.
All heard between 2300 and 2315 last night 3/20/01. Unfortunately needed
to get up today so couldn't listen any longer. For some reason, unknown
to me the 20th-23rd of the month seem to be the best time for this
phenomenon. Waking up at 0455 heard loud and clear WEUP(WEUV) with
gospel and id's way above Florida. Heard on Sony 7600 from prone
position/mattress.

Both were uneeded here. A third station way in the background with talk

3/22. Last night was fun - lots of Latin music and religious
instruction. I only wish my second 2010 wasn't still in for repairs.
Used an old TRF for bandscanning while the primary 2010 was recording.
What is the best source for info on the Cubans? Does NRC still
produce a Cuban station list? I'm amazed that not only is WRTH not
accurate, it is also internally inconsistent with the listings under the
Cuba country section dramatically different than the listings in the
Central America frequency list.
My 1200 early-evening UnID was unable to claw its way through the
local electrical QRM for an ID. I didn't have the loop set just right
to null the static. This DXing is much harder when you have to get up
and go to work and leave the radios/antennas/tapes to fend for
themselves.

 720 VENEZUELA YVQE, R. Oriente, MAR 22 0350 - Very strong with
beautiful ID after song: "Esta es R. Oriente ... transmitiendo
desde ... Venezuela." 2 men talking - mentioned Porlamarrrrrr.
Sounded like sign off, as both men said good night and then
played a martial, anthem-like song. Station faded out rather
than abrupt drop, but didn't come back. [Kenneally CT]
720 JAMAICA RJR, MAR 22 0328 - Definitely the highlight of the night.
Religious programming in accented EE until 0330, then into lite
R&B with mellow-voiced DJ talking between and over songs. RJR
jingle ID and mentions of Kingston at 0425. [Kenneally CT]
 830t NEVIS R. Paradise, MAR 22 0157 - Assumed with accented EE
religious programming. Missed a top of hour ID while listening
to Mexico. I think this may have been the dominant station last
night around this time as well. [Kenneally CT]
840 CUBA Dobleve, Santa Clara, MAR 22 0200 - Very strong over WHAS
with nice ID "Esta es Dobleve, transmitiendo desde Santa
       Clara....". [Kenneally CT]
890 CUBA R. Progresso, Ciego de Avila?, MAR 22 0145 - Super strong
with M talking and periodic songs. //640. [Kenneally CT]
 900 CUBA R. Progresso, Cacocum?, MAR 22 0145 - Weak under another
strong LA that turned out to be XEW. Clearly parallel to
       890/640. [Kenneally CT]
900 MEXICO XEW, Mexico City, MAR 22 0147 - Way up over Cuba and
Canada with man talking. Obligingly gave call letters soon after
       I tuned in. [Kenneally CT]
1030 MEXICO XEQR, R. Centro, Mexico City, MAR 22 0213 - Owned half of
1030, WBZ owned the other half. Endless talking right through the
top of the hour without an ID - which was frustrating because
there were so many places to be listening last night. Talk
seemed to be about sports, with "futbol" and "commento de
deportes". Finally ID at 0213 "XEQR Radio Centro...".
1100t ANTIGUA ZDK, St. John, MAR 22 0225 - Assumed with accented EE
       religious programming. [Kenneally CT]

Inspired by Phil Greenspan and Rick Kenneally's success with Latin
Americans over the past few days, I decided to see if I could hear some
of these as well.
I wound up stuck on 720 for over an hour last night (2345-0110 ET),
listening to what I think is Jamaica. WGN was on the channel, but
somewhat more subdued than usual. Slop from 710 WOR sometimes caused
problems, but the sync detector on the 2010 handled most of it. No
trace of CHTN, Prince Edward Island, which is a regular here. (Unless,
of course, that's in fact what I was listening to all along...)
Unfortunately, I was unable to get a positive ID, despite having stayed
on channel for so long. Maybe tonight, if conditions hold.
By process of elimination, Jamaica is the most likely candidate for
what I heard, but I have to admit that I'm still skeptical. So if
anybody has any other plausible candidates, please let me know.

720p JAMAICA RJR Kingston MAR 22-23 2345-0110 - Good. Sometimes
topping WBBM. Slow fade lasting several minutes at times and
spillover from adjacent WOR troublesome at times. Music before
midnight. After midnight, call-in show with female host in
studio, female guest on telephone, and other callers asking
questions of female guest. Guest may have been a psychic. At
0026 gave phone number, but missed it in slop from adjacent WOR.

A swarm of UK stations on most common MW frequencies this morning at
0530-0630. I just stopped to listen to

1170 24-Mar 2340 Slovenia,RadioTelevizija Slovenija. The Bela Kriz - tx
with nonstop pop and an id at 2356 "Radio Slovenija Turistiski
(?) Programa". First time I have heard that id. Then the hit "On
the Radio". Well, where else ?
1188//1197 24-Mar 2330 RFE in Serbian. From tx in Hungary, resp.
Germany. The 1188 tx was about half a second late, compared with
1197, and that small difference allowed for the repetition of one
or two words when I swirched. Sounded a bit funny.
1296 24-Mar 0540 Radio XL, Manchester, Id-jingles amd Independent Radio
News at 0545, local jeweler ad, Asian music, etc. SIO 344 for
       five minutes, then this one
1296 24-Mar 0550 Spain. COPE Valencia, equeally good for 5 minutes,
then the UK station again, etc. Cope, Valencia had lcal id and
px, "Hechos de la comunidad valenciana", by which is meant, I
think, just not the town of Valencia, but more likely the
Autonomous Valencia Region. In Spain you'll see three flags over
many official buildings, The EU flag, the Spanish National Flag
and that of the autonomous region. (Johan Berglund, Trollhättan,
       Sweden)

Heard on A DX-398 and Radio Shack 15-1833 loop:

1100 KDRY TX, Alamo Heights 3/26 0700 playing C&W style GOS and then
into WX 50 and cloudy and ToH ID. Preaching program at 0701.
1430 KQLL OK, Tulsa 0707 with 1 on 1 Sports. Then in to an Oklahoma

1040 XEGYS MEXICO, Guymas, SO 3/25 1420 with Mexican popular music.
Unusual that it didn't have its standard banda fare. (KR-AZ)
1370 XEMON MEXICO, Monterrey, NL 3/27 1300 ToH ID and announcing R.
Formula with all the R. Formula stations. It appears they are
saying that there are some R. Formula stations now in the US.
Then into a Bob Dylan song. This station has a muddy sound.

Conditions were awesome this weekend, and really put the thrill back
into AM DXing: a Jamaican and two Colombians, both new countries for
me. Thanks to everyone on the list who shared their loggings and made
the rest of us aware of the conditions. Conditions were excellent on
Thursday and Friday nights, but seemed to return to normal on Saturday
night (ET).
Heard on a Sony ICF-2010 with Kiwa Pocket Loop from New Brunswick, NJ.

650 COLOMBIA Radio Colombia Nacional Bogota, March 24 0513-0554 and
March 25 0100. Good: sometimes topping WSM. Lively Spanish
music. Tentative ID as "Colombia" at 0554 on March 24; confirmed
on March 25 at 0100 with top of hour ID. [Hochfelder-NJ]
 720 JAMAICA RJR Kingston, March 23 0445-0526 and March 24 0450-0505.
Good: sometimes topping WGN, which was much more subdued than
usual, but still present. No trace of usual CHTN, Charlottetown,
PEI. On March 23, call-in show hosted by woman, with female
guest on telephone. On March 24, dance-hall music, and finally a
positive ID at 0500: jingle "RJR." [Hochfelder-NJ]
730 COLOMBIA Cadena Melodia (per WRTH 2000) Bogota, March 24 0525-
0628. Good: topping a much subdued CKAC Montreal. Spanish
ballads or easy-listening. At 0525 caught "Bogota," and at 0628
ID'd as "esta aqui Bogota, [capital?] de Colombia."

UNIDs and HELP WITH:

780 UNID, March 24, 0600-0630. Spanish under a subdued WBBM. Too
much fun trying to ID Jamaica and the two Colombians, so didn't
stay on channel. Cuba, Colombia, and Venezuela (in order) are
       likely. [Hochfelder-NJ]
1540 UNID, March 24, 0600-0630. Occassionally topping WPTR and KXEL.
Spanish religious programming: "San Francisco," "la dia de la
milagro," "en nombre de Dios..." I'm thinking that this one is
domestic, but can't figure out who. Also Caribbean accented
English with mention of "reggae" floating up through everything
else on channel. Bahamas? Wishful thinking? [Hochfelder-NJ]

COMMENTS

Well it was one of the best DX'peditions in a long time. Managed to
hear 12 new stations including three new countries: Kuwait, Ukraine and
Slovakia. At first we were very disappointed as nothing new or even
decent heard from 1500 to 1900 local time. Had thought of eating and
going to bed early. Then at 1900 or 0100 UTC the band changed inside of
10 minutes we had TA hets all over the place on Long and medium wave.
Tried for a repeat in the morning but only TP hets no audio.
Temps were about -15 to -20C with winds at 30-50 kph making it lovely
-30C outside. Kept the wood stove going in the bus and were warm as
could be in shirt sleeves DX'ing our hearts out. The bad weather or long
hard walks have always lead to good DX and this was no exception. Will
be last trip of the season due to work and if we get lucky snow will be
melting starting next week making the field a muddy mess.
Quite the end to a season at the old DX bus.

  600. "Colombia rumbo al Mundial" and "Colombia al Mundial" are slogans
heard all over Colombia now that they try to qualify for next year´s
World Soccer Cup to be held in Japan and Korea. So most likely R
Libertad, after all.

Kenneally, CT, hearing R Dif Nacional de Colombia on 610, wonders if
they carry network programming and if one can hear local ID´s. Well, the
answer is yes on both scores. Local ID´s, including the QTH, Uribia, in
NE Colombia, have been heard consistently even late at night. The word
mentioned before "La Voz de la Cultura" is "Inravisión", the state-owned
company in charge of R Dif Nacional and the national TV network. When
reporting - and they do QSL - the address is Radiodifusora Nacional de
Colombia, c/o Inravisión, CAN (=Centro Administrativo Nacional), Av.
Eldorado, Bogotá, D.C., Colombia.

A couple of weeks ago, I lamented return of letters from KYET,
Williams (1180) and had some great feedback from folks on this list.
Finally, I did an internet search on KYET and a list of members of the
Arizona Broadcasters Assn resulted. It gave a Kingman address for KYET,
so off went another letter. Within a couple of days, I received a very
nice V/L from David Foster, Media Coordinator. The address is 812 East
Beale Street, Kingman Arizona, 86401 (Wayne, a change for the AM Log).
Even though Kingman is over 100 miles west of Williams, there's now a
tie-in between one of the Kingman FM stations and KYET, hence the
address.

In 45+ years of DXing, I have had a number of noise problems; some are
solvable, some aren't. Current ones reflect comments by others and
include:
  1. Wife's computer - This is an Apple Power Book G2, the in line
transformer gives noise at all times when connected to a hot AC circuit
(have solved the problem in Minnesota with an in-line surge suppresser
that can be turned off when the computer is not in use, fortunately, our
power up there is rather bad and subject to spikes so I have been able
to sell the concept; power is not as susceptible here in Sun City West
(SCW) and haven't figured out an ascetic way to put a suppresser in line
yet). When her computer is turned on, I can't use the radio at all,
squeals blanket everything.
  2. Low voltage desk lamp - Even when connected to a half hot switch
and off, this gives a motor boating effect all over the band. When on,
is just as bad as the above computer. I have to unplug it from the
power line to eliminate its noise.
  3. Television Set - We have one of those vampire types (a Zenith),
squeals at various frequencies when off, the only way to eliminate those
is to unplug the set (I have connected an in-line extension cord with an
on:off switch that I can use to depower the thing when DXing).
  4. My computer - An Apple Power Book G3, not as bad as my wife's but
still provides enough interference so that it needs to be disconnected
from the power line when DXing.
  5. Printer -Have an Epson here in SCW, which is somewhat noisy when
off but in line, and an Apple 1200 in Minnesota, which is terribly noisy
when off but in line; both need to be effectively unplugged before
DXing.
  6. Dimmer Switches - Have a number of these in the house in SCW (not
my idea!); all need to be off before DXing.
  7. Cable TV - As Bruce Conti says, a big RF leakier!, unfortunately,
I have a line very close to the radio here in SCW.
  8. Low voltage track lighting - Have this in Minnesota; when on, so
much noise that I can't DX; when off, no problem. Did have one in
another house that we owned in the early 1990s; I found, about the time
that we moved, that it was my primary noise source when "off" (had
dimmer switches that, even though "off", evidently were still in the
power circuit and gave significant noise; when they were on, forget
DXing!).
  9. Electric golf cart charger - I suspect that this isn't a common
problem; however, we have an electric golf cart with an internal charger
and when this is connected and charging, it's extremely noisy.
  10. Clothes Dryer - When on, generates some noise (my listening area
is very close to the laundry room); solution, don't do laundry (ha, ha).
  11. All else- When we first moved to SCW, we were one of the few
houses in our area and the band was very quiet. Since the area has
built up, noise has increased significantly. Even when all of the noise
sources in the house are turned off and the main breaker is thrown, I
can put a portable radio by the incoming power line and get an annoying
amount of noise.
As a test several years ago, I tried, in a table lamp, one of the
florescent light bulbs that are being touted by the electricity
providers as an energy saver. It proved a terrible noise generator and
I pitched the ones that I had purchased.
In other houses, I've also noticed noise coming from furnace motors.
Fish tank heaters were identified as a big problem, too, but haven't
heard much about them recently.
It's my opinion that increases in electrical noise are a byproduct of
"advancements" (and I use that term very loosely) in technology and that
electrical noise is something that we DXers don't like but are going to
have to endure. Unfortunately for the DXer, solid state controlling
devices, florescent lighting, vampire stuff and Cable Television are a
fact of life.

A thorough list, with some surprising things on it. Another one I saw
recently, which surprised me - a drop-in stove top for natural gas use.
New ones don't use pilot lights, for gas conservation. Instead, there
apparently is some sort of electronic circuit that senses when the front
gas knob is turned, and operates an igniter. These things generate a
constant sputtering-type RF noise. I was a victim of one when last
living in NY. Bob F

**Russ Edmunds - wb2bjh@xxxxxxxxxxx

As I've said before, my shack is in the basement. I've done thorough
checks of everything, both with the HQ-150 and loop and walking around
with a portable.
The number one problem here is SCR dimmers and light-sensitive
switches, including the sensors for the garage door openers.
Number two is the televisions, although I have noticed minimal
problems with the "vampire" issue, perhaps because one or the other is
almost always on.
We have a server, and 2-3 computers running at any given time, and the
server is actually on the same power circuit as my shack, but I notice
no problems unless I put the portable within 18 inches of any of the
equipment.
The igniter element in the dryer is worse than the one in the oven,
and both are worse than anything the furnace radiates.
But, I still do not understand how outdoor noise-reduced wires can
have any effect on radiated energy which is picked up by the wiring of
the receiver itself!

Jsut before I left, I have a last question: Does someone now how to null
local pest ? I have tryed, but with my internal ferrite bar, it is verry
hard. The only local that I was able to null is CJMS, where I tentativly
got WHO Des Moines, but I`m not sure as the signal was quite poor ? The
others are impossible to null. I have tryed for CINF Infos 690, as there
on 690 there are 4 Latin Americans (The Carraibbean Beacon, HJCY, HCJB1
and a Radio Progreso outlet), but it`s impossible. I ahve heard several
times about DX-ers that can null local pest and pick up distant stations
on this freq. How they do this ?
So, there are the last version of AM logbook, like each sunday and a
full R. Coro aircheck. I ahve solved the problem with back-ground buzz,
when encoding in real-audio, even tough, quality is somewhat lower than
with wave sound:

Hey, I found a station that was proud that it was bringing music back
to AM! (A station after my heart, I say!).
It's WNMB North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on 900khz, 24hrs a day.
They said that WNMB is a classic call sign for the COL and was proud to
bring it back. They're playing a very deep selection of oldies 50s into
the 70s, good jingles, and it's fun to listen to. At sea I seem to get
what I'm presuming is the 900 in Savannah, GA. Got an aircheck or two on
it.
Does anyone know if it is a new allocation, directional, what the
power is, etc. I don't remember logging this station in all the times
I've sailed up and down the S.E. US coast. All told, WNMB is a cool,
albiet canned, station. ANyone else logged this? I'm away from the net,
so if anyone can expound on the facility (pwr, direction, etc) I'd
appreciate it very much...

The Internet Star vs The Radio Star
I've quickly grabbed some clips from the first chapter of "The Future
Of Radio 2002" Written (Edited) by Inside Radio (U.S.)
http://www.insideradio.com/ Publisher, Jerry Del Colliano
Does the internet's omnipresence for college-age students mean it's
over for radio (net & satellite radio notwithstanding) for the next
generation?
They just are not the passionate radio listeners that we were!
I think radio is losing ground as far as music but not information.. I
think radio in the future will have to combine music with news and other
information to keep listeners. Remember top 40 radio got its start and
most stations had 5 minutes of news on the hour and headlines on the
half hour. It was in the late 60s when many stations got on that more
music kick and it hasn't changed since.. Thats where local DJs have the
advantage over satellite programing. After all if you just want to hear
music play a CD why turn on the radio.

Station Fires DJ Over Stunt"
  Here's the text:
Radio station fires DJ over stunt
  By Suzanne Risley
A local on-air radio personality was fired Tuesday morning after a
game of "Stoplight Jeopardy" on Monday night prompted complaints and a
visit from the Terre Haute Police Department.
Aaron Green, 23, lost his job as disc jockey for WZZQ 107.5 FM.
Listeners were told they could win prizes if they stopped at green
lights and then called the station on their cell phones to report the
reaction from motorists.
Radio station general manager Dave Kirsch issued a statement from the
company on Monday apologizing to the community. He said Green was a good
disc jockey who used bad judgment on the air.
"First and foremost, I'm very sorry for what I did to the people of
the Wabash Valley," Green said Tuesday afternoon. He didn't realize how
dangerous the prank was at the time, he said, adding he didn't think
people really would do it.
Jerry Unsinger of Terre Haute heard the game and called the radio
station and police to complain.
"That's just totally irresponsible. I just couldn't believe it," he
said. It encouraged road rage, Unsinger said. Players earned extra
points if motorists cursed or used the middle finger, he said.
The police showed up at the radio station Monday after the game was
finished to tell him to stop, Green said. He thought that was the end of
it until he found out Tuesday his own job had come to a complete stop.
Green acquired the idea to play "Stoplight Jeopardy" from the Web site
www.radioonline.com, he said, a service that provides ideas on games and
contests to play over the radio.
Green believes getting fired was too harsh a punishment, but he won't
fight it. A suspension would have been more appropriate, he said.
"The job of a night jock is to push the envelope," he said. "I'm not
bitter. I was just having fun."
Kirsch would not elaborate on the decision to fire Green.

**WLMCBuzzed@xxxxxxx

Did I read into this incorrectly while surfing the 'Net today, or is
the Equadorian version of WWV actually available on MW, on 1510?

**Stewart, Randy - jrs555t@xxxxxxxx

Apparently so--I was just checking William Hepburn's list of "Time
Signal Broadcasts" (http://www.iprimus.ca/~hepburnw/dx/time.htm), and
indeed he does list HD2IOA on 1510... good luck ever hearing it, even
from Florida, though! If you DO ever think you've bagged it, check for
its shortwave parallel on 3810 in the 80-meter ham band. Time pips and
Spanish-language announcements each minute.
