I'n not a linguist myself and this might not be the right place to 
discuss such topics, however:

Nor I said Sean did say so, did I? Vatican Radio said that, I was 
just contributing with a seemingly reliable piece of information.

Not being a professional linguist, I do expect however that every 
attempt at taxonomy when a single or a group of languages are 
involved can appear "pure nonsense" to native speakers of that 
language(s). Browsing The Ethnologue for information on my own 
language, Italian, I reckon it is reliable enough and it could assist 
native and non native listeners to Italian contents via radio.
Sean didn't want to know about Molisan dialects and we all seem to 
agree on whether a "Scandinavian" language exist or not (it doesn't, 
but...). Differences or identities concerning Tagalog and Pilino 
remain pending from Ethnologue's definitions, alas. In spite of your 
learned caveat I still cannot think of many other better organized 
references so easily available on the Net. And no: I'm not entitled 
to any commissions on materials sold there.
